RP: Shopping
Who: Susan and Pandora

What: Shopping for some charmed items

Where: Inside and Out, Monument Alley

When: Friday, 3 October, Afternoon

Rating: SFW

Susan walked quickly down Monument Alley, still in her work clothes. She'd been eyeing off Inside and Out for a while, and a conversation with Auror Proudfoot that morning had led her to decide that it was time to buy herself a few more charmed items for her home and person. She entered the store, looking around with interest at the vast array of interesting items on display - both commonplace and exotic. Her fingers twitched, aching to examine everything. She walked past a tent and stuck her head in quickly, taking a moment to appreciate the fine charmsmanship that had gone into the details on the inside.

"Hello," she called out, the echo of her voice in the store making her wince. "Oh hello, sorry! Susan Bones, I'm here to talk about some custom made charmed furniture?"

Susan shrugged easily. "Sometimes you have to pay more for quality," she said with a small smile. "I think the wards on there will be fine. I'll probably cover the thing with high runes and blood wards just to be safe, and there's no need to get you into any sort of grey legal area like that." She smiled again and shook her head slightly. "One of life's great injustices is the fact that Aurors and Hitwizards will get away with all sorts of nasty wards that would be frowned upon, merely by dint of the fact that we're expected to be paranoid."

She looked up at Pandora and grinned. "Oh that is very good. I'm impressed." She ran her hand along the wood thoughtfully. "The signature isolation charm is a nice little touch too. I wonder if anyone's ever placed a flectelucem* cloud in the top to obscure whats in the bolt?"

"I thought as much," she said with a disarming smile. "I was just thinking of a three compartment jewellery box, black lacquer and inlay of some kind - to match my room. I'd love a copy of the catalogue though." She wandered over towards the tents and looked at them speculatively. "So what can you tell me?"

The corner of her lip quirked. If anyone but an auror out and out said things about blood wards, which not everyone could do anyway, they'd get the side-eye and aspirations of their characters. "Thanks. I don't need to get in any kind of grey area if I can help it." Her face smoothed into more neutrality; even now, beneath the much-practiced mask, there was a surge of envy for those jobs and those allowances that Pandora herself had always wanted. Well, she'd get them in a different way, perhaps, but the feeling wasn't about to fade overnight.

"Yeah, I'm fond of doing that on things, and it's been a popular safety thing with the Aurory with prisoner transportation. It takes too much power and skill for most people to even attempt to fake a magical signature." Which meant that it would keep prisoners firmly down in the bottom unless they had other means at their disposal. "I think it would be simple. There's room on the other three edges to insert charms or spells. You could put it there, if you wanted."

"This is our limited selection," Pandora indicated with a wave of her hand. There were no puzzle boxes like she enjoyed, though there were a few of those in the catalog. "And..." she flicked her wrist and silently summoned the catalog, which landed easily in her hand, "here's the catalog. You can take it with you if you don't find anything here today."

"Ah well, with the tents, there are a lot of options," she admitted, heading that way. "How big you want it to appear on the outside -- large, medium, small, tiny. We have some of each. Then on the inside, how big you want it. The more rooms, the greater the expense, especially in contrast to the outer size. The most popular seems to be the basic four room set up in a medium tent: living area with small kitchen, and three bedrooms. This is followed by the five room. Of course, I have a custom order that's almost settled coming up that's going to be a very large tent with many more rooms than that." It was going to be a bitch to complete, and she had the feeling from the buyer that they would end up furnishing it as well. "Also, it depends on how furnished you want it to be as well; we can provide that, or some of it, or leave it empty."

"You're most certainly welcome," Susan said with a genuine smile. She looked at the woman's cool mask for a moment, weighing her options. Madame Montgomery's staunch refusal to be drawn into any discussions regarding her daughter or her affiliation had naturally led to most of Magical Law Enforcement familiarising themselves with the specifics of the case. Susan's overwhelming sense of fairness rather pointedly informed her that it was only decent to give the woman a second chance, seeming as she had done the same for Marcus. Finally, she gave in and smiled, "The woman that killed Feynir Greyback is certainly worthy of a second chance, and I wouldn't want to jeopardise that," she said quietly.

"I am too," she said, nodding and blushing slightly. "I have it on my home wards actually. Well, sort of. I have a IFF function woven into them that only allows people with certain signatures to enter my home without my knowledge and approval." She smiled crookedly and continued, "The fact that you've thought to use the same spell in your pieces just further confirms in my mind how excellent this store is."

"Thanks very much," she said, quickly leafing through the catalogue for a moment and making a mental note to look a the section of jewellery and puzzle boxes more closely, specifically at several of the handsome black and gold lacquered creations.

She nodded thoughtfully. "I like the idea of a medium to small sized tent with four rooms to be quite honest. I don't really need anything bigger than that, but I would definitely like some basic furnishings in the kitchen at least? An oven and what have you," she said, furrowing her brow thoughtfully. "I know someone in Experimental Charms who could probably hook me up with a refrigerator, but I'm setting it up more as an emergency or getting stuck in the woods because of a stupid mission thing, then some amenities would be nice." She thought for a moment and nodded. "Yes, I think I'll order one of them as well." She turned and smiled at Pandora. "I suppose I should show you the bag then?"

For a long moment she held perfectly still; so someone had put that factoid in her file. She had known she'd been seen slicing his throat open as he lay unconscious, but she hadn't looked up, so there was no clue of who had put it there. She wasn't surprised they had, though. Her previous still face stayed nearly so, though her lips trembled very faintly and then pressed together. Her eyes flicked to Susan's and she nodded sharply. "I appreciate that," she said in a low voice. "Not all of your compatriots think as much." No, some of the Aurors still snubbed her; others occasionally actively harassed her.

"Understandable. No one is allowed where I live at the moment," she said. There were so preciously few she could trust, and that might change now that she was getting out and about again, but right now no one had proven to her that they were safe yet. "It's a very useful one."

"It does have a stove," Pandora said. "That's standard, though you have an option of upgrading it. There's a basic spelled ice box, though that's easily replaced. You'll probably want beds and sofas and the like, and maybe a table and chairs." Pandora summoned a small pad easily over to her and made a few notes on it while Susan thought, mentally tallying up what she had decided to purchase already.

"Yes, please," she said with a small smile. "We'll discuss what you want for it, and you might have to come back for it after I've had time to install all the proper charms."

"I imagine so, yes," Susan replied calmly, noting dispassionately the way in which Pandora's lips had quivered for a moment. "Nevertheless, it's true. Greyback was if you'll excuse the pun, a monster. He deserved to die in the most painful way imaginable." She smiled mirthlessly and shrugged. "There are still members of the Aurory who are unable or unwilling to change with the times. Not everyone had a choice in their allegiances during the war. But enough, I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

She nodded and smiled again. "The better part of valour is discretion," she commented blandly. Having wards that stopped anyone but a select few from entering into your home was something rather common in the post-war world; a result no doubt of a certain shared societal dread at the maelstrom of reports that circulated during Riddle's ascendancy of people being killed in or taken from their homes. People like Susan's aunt. "Whatever can be used to make things safer and more painful for those that seek us harm are perfectly acceptable in my book."

"A basic stove will probably be sufficient I think," she said, furrowing her brow a bit as she thought. "I'd be more than happy to pay for the inclusion of some basic furnishings. You know: beds, a kitchen table and chairs. The rest I can get from one of my family's properties."

Obligingly, Susan reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out the handbag. "My brother apparently tried to get this charmed, but he got slightly embarrassed for some reason. Apparently it's deeply important to him that I have a blue bag that's bigger on the inside." She handed it over and shrugged. "It's got three compartments, so really all I want is for the two smaller compartments to go about three times as deep and three times as wide as they are now, and for the main compartment to extend down about a metre or so - enough to be able to let me reach things easily - and perhaps two metres across? I would do it myself but it takes a real master charmer to do the extension spells seamlessly enough to keep the leather looking acceptable. What do you think?"

"He did. But I had to settle for slitting his throat," she said baldly, then shrugged. If she was going to get in trouble for that murder, and she admitted it had been that, plain and simple, then she was going to get in trouble for it. She wouldn't survive another time in Azkaban, she suspected, but she'd try. For a bit at least.

She simply looked contemplatively at Susan for a long moment, grey-green eyes showing very little. Snake-eyes, Lestrange eyes, she'd heard them all. She wondered if the woman was serious. IF she was, it was possible Pandora could use that to at least check in on her brother without him knowing about it. She nodded and allowed Susan to change the topic.

"I've got some stock, uncharmed stuff in the back that'll work. If you don't like it, I'll give you a couple weeks to either switch it out with stock we have or get a refund," Pandora said, making another note on her pad.

Pandora took the bag and looked it over. Good quality, not too treated so she'd be able to manipulate it effectively. She set it down to make notes of what Susan was saying (gods take it if she forgot, which she did sometimes). "Yeah, leather isn't always greatly amenable. I don't see why your brother would have been embarrassed to get this thing charmed," she mused aloud. "That shouldn't be an issue. I can get it done tonight or tomorrow and either owl it back to you or you can come pick it up," she told her.

Susan shrugged with an appalling lack of concern for the declaration of guilt. "Don't expect me to do anything about it," she said with a smile. "It's not like I didn't kill people in the battle either," she said evenly. "I killed almost every person that was present for my Aunt's death. 'Cept Riddle of course, but I figure Harry killing him was an okay substitute." She decided, rather irrationally perhaps that she liked the woman in front of her. She was simultaneously damaged and incredibly strong, and Susan tended to collect people who fitted into that rather particular category.

"That sounds perfect," she said with a smile and a wave of her hand. "I can always change things up if I need to, and really it's something that just needs basic functions. I don't need a palace to stay the night in the woods."

She watched as Pandora meticulously examined her bag, feeling her lips tug happily. "It isn't at that, I've seem some horrible jobs done with dragonhide jackets," she said with a shudder. Many young aurors inevitably went through a stage of wearing dragonhide jackets to work in an effort to look cool and dangerous. Admittedly, Susan owned several, but she'd never worn them to work, and had placed the extension charms in the pockets with a great deal more finesse than some of the ones she'd seen paraded around the Ministry. "That's lovely of you," she said. "I'll have to remember to add a tip for excellent service," she added, smiling. "Speaking of, how much do I owe?"

"Good on you," Pandora said. She could completely understand revenge; she'd been a vengeful, vindictive sort of girl even before she'd been pressed into service by the Death Eaters. There were more deaths on the tip of her tongue, but her wariness held out; she didn't want to be tricked, and she really didn't know Susan.

Her lips curved up faintly. "Well, some people think they do need a palace. I have this one order in the queue... you have no idea." It was going to take her a lot of time and effort to get it done to specification.

"Dragonhide doesn't take spellwork well, but repels it. If you force it, it doesn't look right and it loses some of its best qualities," Pandora said automatically. "You have to charm the fabric in the pockets and lining separately, and then sew them into the coat, which is why it should be done in process rather than after the fact. Though if you're careful, as you say, you can do the pockets effectively enough. They're great for dueling though. My dueling robes are lined with dragonhide, for the spell repelling qualities."

"That isn't needed, but I'm here to help," she said. "Let's just go over here and I'll tally it for you." She went behind the counter, made a reference to a catalog, checked a few other things with quick efficiency and the wave of a hand to magic things back, then calculated it all out, naming the sum, which though high wasn't unreasonable for everything that had been purchased. "It'll take a day to put all the furniture in the tent, too," she added belatedly. "But I can get someone to deliver it for you."

"Indeed," Susan agreed with an incline of her head, before smiling slightly. Having decided that she liked Pandora, the logical next step was to make friends with the woman. Or at least, that was the logical next step for a Hufflepuff, and really that was more than enough for Susan to be getting on with. "Good for you as well."

She rolled her eyes and sight wearily. "I know the type. The whole my wand is bigger than your wand type thing, get's a bit exhausting really."

Susan nodded and grinned toothily. "Precisely, you either make do without spelled pockets or specifically buy a jacket with non-hide pockets, which are deeply useful."

"That should be fine," Susan said almost absently. Reaching into her pocket and pulling out a purse and counting out the money quickly. "That'll be perfect, thank you," she said with a genuine smile. "I hope to see you again."

Pandora finished the transaction efficiently, putting the coins into the magical lockbox under the counter. "No, thank you, Susan," she said, smile edged with something that could almost be friendly warmth. "Do come back anytime."
