RP: Shopping
Who: Susan and Pandora

What: Shopping for some charmed items

Where: Inside and Out, Monument Alley

When: Friday, 3 October, Afternoon

Rating: SFW

Susan walked quickly down Monument Alley, still in her work clothes. She'd been eyeing off Inside and Out for a while, and a conversation with Auror Proudfoot that morning had led her to decide that it was time to buy herself a few more charmed items for her home and person. She entered the store, looking around with interest at the vast array of interesting items on display - both commonplace and exotic. Her fingers twitched, aching to examine everything. She walked past a tent and stuck her head in quickly, taking a moment to appreciate the fine charmsmanship that had gone into the details on the inside.

"Hello," she called out, the echo of her voice in the store making her wince. "Oh hello, sorry! Susan Bones, I'm here to talk about some custom made charmed furniture?"

Pandora was busy in the workshop in the back, though not workingn on any thing big enough or experimental enough to require the wards to be up. One earpiece was in and one out, though, when a voice caught her attention. She waited a beat to hear n answer and when there was none, she huffed in quiet frustration. Trust Elroy to be away the moment there was a customer, she thought.

"Just a minute!" She called out the door, snagging a robe yo throw on over her Muggle tanktop and three quarter denims. both items she'd recently discovered and fallen in love with. She shoved her feet in shoes and grabbed her second ear piece, fitting it in as she walked out the door to the shop floor. It DisIllusioned itself into invisibility. She put on a polite smile even as her stomach clenched at the sight of an auror in her place of work, though it wasn't uncommon.

"Hi, sorry, someone else was supposed to be covering the floor," she said. "How may I help you today?"

Susan smiled politely as the shop attendant came out from the back room. She frowned for a second, trying to place the face then shrugged internally, it didn't really matter. "Hi," she said, smiling graciously. "Like I said I'm interested in getting some charmed items. Mainly a handbag, a tent, and a seven or even nine-compartment chest? I've been told this is the best place to come to."

She tilted her head again as something in the back of her head waved a placard and screamed for her attention. The woman really did look strangely familiar, like someone in Magical Law Enforcement. She smiled pleasantly to mask her confusion. "Sorry, but have we met before?"

"We can definitely help you with those things," Dora said, making an effort to harness her attention in the proper manner. She'd already been keyed up to do a bunch of Charms work; switching gears right now was proving a little hard. "Those sorts of things are our specialty. What do you want to look at first?" she asked.

She tilted her head, her smile fixed into place because one couldn't chase off the customers by snapping at them for recognizing them in some manner. "Susan Bones, right?" she said, waiting for an affirmative before continuing. "I was a year above you in school, I believe. In Slytherin." She held out her hand, smile just a little sharper. "Pandora Montgomery. I believe you work with my mother and brother."

Everyone knew, of course, that her mother hadn't talked to her since the war. That she hadn't pulled any strings for her at all. That her daughter was a crazy nut of a Death Eater, though some knew more and some didn't. Her mother had ambitions; she'd likely be Minister of Magic in the next five to ten years, if she got her way. And Hyperion was an auror, though Pandora supposed he could be a hit wizard by now, though he hadn't been as much... like their mother as she was.

"Excellent," Susan said happily. She noted with a certain detached clarity that the woman seemed to be making a conscious effort to shift into the here and now. "Well I have a lovely blue bag that my brother decided to buy me which I'd like to get altered to be more useable. I mean I've got extension charms on the pockets of most of my work robes and coats but sometimes I'm not able to wear them." She forced herself to stop, as she was moments away from babbling. "I'd also like to get a tent because you never know when you'll need one. But to actually answer your question I'd love to look at what sort of chests or maybe trunks you have?"

She nodded affirmatively, "Yep, that's me." She reached out and automatically shook her hand. So this was the infamous Pandora Montgomery, slayer of at least four people but possible dozens more Death Eaters. There had always been talk of her of course, especially after the war, but it was interesting to meet her in person. There were a number of Death Eaters who she believed were worthy of second chances, and she was curious to see if the woman standing in front of her was one of them. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance," she answered with a warm but firm smile. "I do work with Hyperion actually, he was one of the junior Aurors involved in my training." She tilted her head and looked at Pandora levelly. "I know Madame Montgomery as well, of course," she said levelly. "She never misses an opportunity to tell me how well she knew my Aunt, and how well she knows my mother." She wanted to add that she found the woman to be efficient but vaguely unlikeable, and that her mother delighted in scaring the absolute hell out of her with small polite statements dripping with equal part blandness and malice, however; she felt that probably wouldn't be helpful in the situation. "Still, your charm work is absolutely superb."

"Every woman should have a purse that has more room in it than there seems," Pandora said with a reassuring smile. She might not work the floor much, but she knew how to do it, once she got used to it and usually when people didn't know who she was. "We'll start with trunks, then, and go on to tents. Then I'll get the details for the bag so you can bring it in later."

Pandora's eyebrows managed to stay where they were at the relatively warm welcome. Some of the Aurors who came through here refused to deal with her at all. She kept a polite smile on her face, though inside for a moment she dreadfully wanted to blurt out questions regarding her brother. They had been so close before, despite their competitiveness; she missed him. She managed to keep the question casual though, and down to only one. "Is he doing well, then?"

She shrugged a shoulder. "In defense of that, your Aunt was over at our house quite a bit when I was little," she confessed with a small smile. "As for your mother, well, I'm out of touch these days." The nice way of saying 'no one in my family speaks to me anymore.'

"Well, thank you. I hope you continue to be pleased with it. These are the types of trunks we have. We don't necessarily have them all in stock, but more can be ordered and spelled to your specifications. How many spaces were you looking to have in one?"

"I couldn't agree more," Susan said with a silver little laugh. "You never know when you're going to need something important. I don't know how Muggle women deal with just the limited amount of room to be honest." She nodded thoughtfully. "That would be perfect."

She smiled, a touch of pity filling her heart for a moment. It wasn't exactly a secret that Madame Montgomery had disowned her daughter totally - a move no doubt aimed at ensuring that nothing would stand in her way of eventually succeeding Minister Shacklebolt. Hyperion on the other hand, Susan wasn't sure about as she'd never thought to ask. "He's well," she said with a genuine smile. "He's well on track to make a senior Auror position."

"I suppose she would have been," Susan said with a small nod. "The head of Magical Law Enforcement and all." She smiled at Pandora's candour and felt herself relax more. "My mother's the head of the Department of Mysteries." She made a face for a second, trying to work out a way to show how sorry she was for Pandora's predicament. "I'm sorry you're ah, out of touch."

Susan nodded at the trunks and chests on display. ""Excellent, I remember my Aunt had a beautiful old chest with twelve compartments, and some of the older Aurors have trunks which are highly useful. So I think maybe a seven or nine compartment trunk, and maybe a twelve compartment chest?"

The first real, genuine smile flashed across her face at the news. She restrained herself from asking more questions. Instead she schooled her face back calmer and simply said, "Good. Good." As fiercely competitive as they'd been, she had been close with him once.

"Ah yes, that's right," Pandora said with a nod. She'd heard that somewhere. "Well, they do work together some, at least." Though she really wasn't defending her mother. There were a lot of very complicated feelings about her mother, but in this she didn't know enough to defend or not defend. Her lips twisted, a small window of bitterness before it was smoothed away. She just shrugged a shoulder as if she didn't really care.

"I think I remember the one you're talking about," Pandora said, and she walked along the selection before stopping before a certain kind of chest. She grabbed a hold of it and picked it up, not having the trouble beyond length-of-arm that most would expect someone of her size to have. "This isn't the same, but it's a similar style, if I remember right. Twelve compartments, one very large one. Handmade and then charmed, able to be warded further." She set it down and flicked a small piece of wood, opening the lid and stepping back for Susan to look it over.

Susan answered Pandora's smile with one of her own. She was incredibly close with her brother and parents, and couldn't even imagine what it would be like to be cast aside by them. Although equally, she'd never done anything so radical as becoming a Death Eater. Still, she was stuck to the core by the woman's predicament.

She nodded an affirmative, vaguely wondering if this talk of family was upsetting to the other woman. There were many things Susan didn't particularly want to do, and upsetting the woman who was going to be charming her handbag was one of them.

"Oooh this is lovely," Susan remarked, admiring the fine carving and craftsmanship of the chest. "I like the idea that it can be warded further. I'm slightly paranoid with my wards." She opened each compartment, making approving noises at the size and dimensions, thinking about the various important items she could place in there - something that gave her a sudden idea, which was knocked out of her head by the final compartment. "Oh this is very good," she said approvingly, looking down at the large space in the final compartment - easily twelve feet deep and fifteen feet across. "I know a lot of Aurors used these in their trunks to transport prisoners, but in a home chest you could put some shelves in there and keep important, volatile, or rare items locked away. You'd just need a ladder." She looked up and grinned at the woman. "I love it, and think I will definitely take one. Randomly before we look at tents and I hand over my bag, do you have any multi-compartment jewellery boxes?"

"It's not the cheapest but it's honestly one of my favorite ones. I like dealing with that particular artisan, he does exceptional wood work. As to wards, I can add some runic warding, if you desire, and some others, or you can do it all yourself." Personally she'd add a blood ward, which while not illegal wasn't exactly looked on well, but she wasn't about to suggest that to an Auror.

She loved that artisan, though his work didn't come cheap; he laid in basic charms as he worked, adn then she built on that when they arrived. She smiled as Susan examined it, and walked forward to tap at the inner rim on the chest with the butt of her wand. A ladder started unspooling down to the bottom of the large compartment. "There you go," she said with a faint smirk, backing away again for her to get a good look at it. "You can isolate it to only your magical signature, if desired."

"Wonderful," she said, pleased. Her head tilted slightly. "We do, but most of the charms work ends up being custom, since people tend to want different sorts of things. What we don't have in stock I have a catalog for. We don't keep a huge amount except during the holidays," she explained almost apologetically. "But you're welcome to take a look and I can order almost anything." She gestured toward another set of shelves over a little bit.

Susan shrugged easily. "Sometimes you have to pay more for quality," she said with a small smile. "I think the wards on there will be fine. I'll probably cover the thing with high runes and blood wards just to be safe, and there's no need to get you into any sort of grey legal area like that." She smiled again and shook her head slightly. "One of life's great injustices is the fact that Aurors and Hitwizards will get away with all sorts of nasty wards that would be frowned upon, merely by dint of the fact that we're expected to be paranoid."

She looked up at Pandora and grinned. "Oh that is very good. I'm impressed." She ran her hand along the wood thoughtfully. "The signature isolation charm is a nice little touch too. I wonder if anyone's ever placed a flectelucem* cloud in the top to obscure whats in the bolt?"

"I thought as much," she said with a disarming smile. "I was just thinking of a three compartment jewellery box, black lacquer and inlay of some kind - to match my room. I'd love a copy of the catalogue though." She wandered over towards the tents and looked at them speculatively. "So what can you tell me?"

The corner of her lip quirked. If anyone but an auror out and out said things about blood wards, which not everyone could do anyway, they'd get the side-eye and aspirations of their characters. "Thanks. I don't need to get in any kind of grey area if I can help it." Her face smoothed into more neutrality; even now, beneath the much-practiced mask, there was a surge of envy for those jobs and those allowances that Pandora herself had always wanted. Well, she'd get them in a different way, perhaps, but the feeling wasn't about to fade overnight.

"Yeah, I'm fond of doing that on things, and it's been a popular safety thing with the Aurory with prisoner transportation. It takes too much power and skill for most people to even attempt to fake a magical signature." Which meant that it would keep prisoners firmly down in the bottom unless they had other means at their disposal. "I think it would be simple. There's room on the other three edges to insert charms or spells. You could put it there, if you wanted."

"This is our limited selection," Pandora indicated with a wave of her hand. There were no puzzle boxes like she enjoyed, though there were a few of those in the catalog. "And..." she flicked her wrist and silently summoned the catalog, which landed easily in her hand, "here's the catalog. You can take it with you if you don't find anything here today."

"Ah well, with the tents, there are a lot of options," she admitted, heading that way. "How big you want it to appear on the outside -- large, medium, small, tiny. We have some of each. Then on the inside, how big you want it. The more rooms, the greater the expense, especially in contrast to the outer size. The most popular seems to be the basic four room set up in a medium tent: living area with small kitchen, and three bedrooms. This is followed by the five room. Of course, I have a custom order that's almost settled coming up that's going to be a very large tent with many more rooms than that." It was going to be a bitch to complete, and she had the feeling from the buyer that they would end up furnishing it as well. "Also, it depends on how furnished you want it to be as well; we can provide that, or some of it, or leave it empty."

"You're most certainly welcome," Susan said with a genuine smile. She looked at the woman's cool mask for a moment, weighing her options. Madame Montgomery's staunch refusal to be drawn into any discussions regarding her daughter or her affiliation had naturally led to most of Magical Law Enforcement familiarising themselves with the specifics of the case. Susan's overwhelming sense of fairness rather pointedly informed her that it was only decent to give the woman a second chance, seeming as she had done the same for Marcus. Finally, she gave in and smiled, "The woman that killed Feynir Greyback is certainly worthy of a second chance, and I wouldn't want to jeopardise that," she said quietly.

"I am too," she said, nodding and blushing slightly. "I have it on my home wards actually. Well, sort of. I have a IFF function woven into them that only allows people with certain signatures to enter my home without my knowledge and approval." She smiled crookedly and continued, "The fact that you've thought to use the same spell in your pieces just further confirms in my mind how excellent this store is."

"Thanks very much," she said, quickly leafing through the catalogue for a moment and making a mental note to look a the section of jewellery and puzzle boxes more closely, specifically at several of the handsome black and gold lacquered creations.

She nodded thoughtfully. "I like the idea of a medium to small sized tent with four rooms to be quite honest. I don't really need anything bigger than that, but I would definitely like some basic furnishings in the kitchen at least? An oven and what have you," she said, furrowing her brow thoughtfully. "I know someone in Experimental Charms who could probably hook me up with a refrigerator, but I'm setting it up more as an emergency or getting stuck in the woods because of a stupid mission thing, then some amenities would be nice." She thought for a moment and nodded. "Yes, I think I'll order one of them as well." She turned and smiled at Pandora. "I suppose I should show you the bag then?"

For a long moment she held perfectly still; so someone had put that factoid in her file. She had known she'd been seen slicing his throat open as he lay unconscious, but she hadn't looked up, so there was no clue of who had put it there. She wasn't surprised they had, though. Her previous still face stayed nearly so, though her lips trembled very faintly and then pressed together. Her eyes flicked to Susan's and she nodded sharply. "I appreciate that," she said in a low voice. "Not all of your compatriots think as much." No, some of the Aurors still snubbed her; others occasionally actively harassed her.

"Understandable. No one is allowed where I live at the moment," she said. There were so preciously few she could trust, and that might change now that she was getting out and about again, but right now no one had proven to her that they were safe yet. "It's a very useful one."

"It does have a stove," Pandora said. "That's standard, though you have an option of upgrading it. There's a basic spelled ice box, though that's easily replaced. You'll probably want beds and sofas and the like, and maybe a table and chairs." Pandora summoned a small pad easily over to her and made a few notes on it while Susan thought, mentally tallying up what she had decided to purchase already.

"Yes, please," she said with a small smile. "We'll discuss what you want for it, and you might have to come back for it after I've had time to install all the proper charms."

"I imagine so, yes," Susan replied calmly, noting dispassionately the way in which Pandora's lips had quivered for a moment. "Nevertheless, it's true. Greyback was if you'll excuse the pun, a monster. He deserved to die in the most painful way imaginable." She smiled mirthlessly and shrugged. "There are still members of the Aurory who are unable or unwilling to change with the times. Not everyone had a choice in their allegiances during the war. But enough, I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

She nodded and smiled again. "The better part of valour is discretion," she commented blandly. Having wards that stopped anyone but a select few from entering into your home was something rather common in the post-war world; a result no doubt of a certain shared societal dread at the maelstrom of reports that circulated during Riddle's ascendancy of people being killed in or taken from their homes. People like Susan's aunt. "Whatever can be used to make things safer and more painful for those that seek us harm are perfectly acceptable in my book."

"A basic stove will probably be sufficient I think," she said, furrowing her brow a bit as she thought. "I'd be more than happy to pay for the inclusion of some basic furnishings. You know: beds, a kitchen table and chairs. The rest I can get from one of my family's properties."

Obligingly, Susan reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled out the handbag. "My brother apparently tried to get this charmed, but he got slightly embarrassed for some reason. Apparently it's deeply important to him that I have a blue bag that's bigger on the inside." She handed it over and shrugged. "It's got three compartments, so really all I want is for the two smaller compartments to go about three times as deep and three times as wide as they are now, and for the main compartment to extend down about a metre or so - enough to be able to let me reach things easily - and perhaps two metres across? I would do it myself but it takes a real master charmer to do the extension spells seamlessly enough to keep the leather looking acceptable. What do you think?"

"He did. But I had to settle for slitting his throat," she said baldly, then shrugged. If she was going to get in trouble for that murder, and she admitted it had been that, plain and simple, then she was going to get in trouble for it. She wouldn't survive another time in Azkaban, she suspected, but she'd try. For a bit at least.

She simply looked contemplatively at Susan for a long moment, grey-green eyes showing very little. Snake-eyes, Lestrange eyes, she'd heard them all. She wondered if the woman was serious. IF she was, it was possible Pandora could use that to at least check in on her brother without him knowing about it. She nodded and allowed Susan to change the topic.

"I've got some stock, uncharmed stuff in the back that'll work. If you don't like it, I'll give you a couple weeks to either switch it out with stock we have or get a refund," Pandora said, making another note on her pad.

Pandora took the bag and looked it over. Good quality, not too treated so she'd be able to manipulate it effectively. She set it down to make notes of what Susan was saying (gods take it if she forgot, which she did sometimes). "Yeah, leather isn't always greatly amenable. I don't see why your brother would have been embarrassed to get this thing charmed," she mused aloud. "That shouldn't be an issue. I can get it done tonight or tomorrow and either owl it back to you or you can come pick it up," she told her.

Susan shrugged with an appalling lack of concern for the declaration of guilt. "Don't expect me to do anything about it," she said with a smile. "It's not like I didn't kill people in the battle either," she said evenly. "I killed almost every person that was present for my Aunt's death. 'Cept Riddle of course, but I figure Harry killing him was an okay substitute." She decided, rather irrationally perhaps that she liked the woman in front of her. She was simultaneously damaged and incredibly strong, and Susan tended to collect people who fitted into that rather particular category.

"That sounds perfect," she said with a smile and a wave of her hand. "I can always change things up if I need to, and really it's something that just needs basic functions. I don't need a palace to stay the night in the woods."

She watched as Pandora meticulously examined her bag, feeling her lips tug happily. "It isn't at that, I've seem some horrible jobs done with dragonhide jackets," she said with a shudder. Many young aurors inevitably went through a stage of wearing dragonhide jackets to work in an effort to look cool and dangerous. Admittedly, Susan owned several, but she'd never worn them to work, and had placed the extension charms in the pockets with a great deal more finesse than some of the ones she'd seen paraded around the Ministry. "That's lovely of you," she said. "I'll have to remember to add a tip for excellent service," she added, smiling. "Speaking of, how much do I owe?"

"Good on you," Pandora said. She could completely understand revenge; she'd been a vengeful, vindictive sort of girl even before she'd been pressed into service by the Death Eaters. There were more deaths on the tip of her tongue, but her wariness held out; she didn't want to be tricked, and she really didn't know Susan.

Her lips curved up faintly. "Well, some people think they do need a palace. I have this one order in the queue... you have no idea." It was going to take her a lot of time and effort to get it done to specification.

"Dragonhide doesn't take spellwork well, but repels it. If you force it, it doesn't look right and it loses some of its best qualities," Pandora said automatically. "You have to charm the fabric in the pockets and lining separately, and then sew them into the coat, which is why it should be done in process rather than after the fact. Though if you're careful, as you say, you can do the pockets effectively enough. They're great for dueling though. My dueling robes are lined with dragonhide, for the spell repelling qualities."

"That isn't needed, but I'm here to help," she said. "Let's just go over here and I'll tally it for you." She went behind the counter, made a reference to a catalog, checked a few other things with quick efficiency and the wave of a hand to magic things back, then calculated it all out, naming the sum, which though high wasn't unreasonable for everything that had been purchased. "It'll take a day to put all the furniture in the tent, too," she added belatedly. "But I can get someone to deliver it for you."

"Indeed," Susan agreed with an incline of her head, before smiling slightly. Having decided that she liked Pandora, the logical next step was to make friends with the woman. Or at least, that was the logical next step for a Hufflepuff, and really that was more than enough for Susan to be getting on with. "Good for you as well."

She rolled her eyes and sight wearily. "I know the type. The whole my wand is bigger than your wand type thing, get's a bit exhausting really."

Susan nodded and grinned toothily. "Precisely, you either make do without spelled pockets or specifically buy a jacket with non-hide pockets, which are deeply useful."

"That should be fine," Susan said almost absently. Reaching into her pocket and pulling out a purse and counting out the money quickly. "That'll be perfect, thank you," she said with a genuine smile. "I hope to see you again."

Pandora finished the transaction efficiently, putting the coins into the magical lockbox under the counter. "No, thank you, Susan," she said, smile edged with something that could almost be friendly warmth. "Do come back anytime."
