Chess
Who: OPEN THREAD
What: Beginner's Night @ Wizarding Chess Championships
Where: The Roost, Finnigan's
When: Thursday evening
Rating: SFW

Instead of the usual large chessboard taking up the floor of The Roost, Seamus had had Dominic set up several smaller ones - with room around the outside for the more usual kind of tabletop boards and chairs. It was a spur of the moment to do something different for the evening and Seamus honestly didn't know what kind of a crowd to expect.

There. That pride in the woman’s smile, not at all unlike the pride Finbar felt after a good match – not necessarily a won match, but a good match where the team had clicked and played flawlessly – had him nodding slowly. “The bride,” he chuckled, amused and relieved that she at least didn’t assume him the groom. “Maura’s my niece.” He pointed out his nephew – a late teen with a resemblance to Finbar, though of a rather slighter build and height – who was setting up his chess pieces. “That’s her youngest brother, Killian.”

His smile widened with amused acceptance when she asked for his opinion. Briefly his mind flashed back, first to his own wedding, which had been an extravaganza of white and ruby tulle, and then to the more recent and far more personal wedding of his niece. “I think you did a great job of making it both Maura and James’ wedding and make it a celebration them rather than a two-in-one family reunion.” Which in his estimation was no small feat.

She looked over to the young man, "I've watched him play, he's potential," she assessed.

His thoughts on the wedding made her laugh a light laugh, "I find weddings tend to be a celebration of the families these days, rather than the two people stepping into marriage." She shook her head, "My planning company strives to reign that in. You'll find a lot of society brides these days don't want to the old style parties of formality and family tradition, I think it's all going the way of arranged marriages and business deals," she thought out loud. Then, remembering her surroundings, she hoped no potential clients had heard. She was proud of her work, but if the right pureblood came along who thought otherwise, she'd do what the client wanted.

Lifting her glass of wine again she asked before taking a drink, "I'm sorry but, who are you? I know your niece and her husband, and apparently one of their children, but not you. You've interrupted my reading." She indicated the book with her eyes before finally taking the drink of her red. There was something... cocky about him, she thought, but Cho had rarely ever stepped back from a challenge in conversation. So what was this - was he just trying to bother her? Did he just happen to recognize her from the wedding and decide to say hello? That would be odd, she was just 'the help' at her events, after all.

No, none of this made any sense at all to Cho, and so she watched him, waiting for an explanation with an air of near-impatience but a small smile playing on her lips despite herself (he was an extremely good looking man paying attention to her, after all).

“He does,” Finbar agreed, not quite able to keep the pride in his nephew from showing in his slight smile. Killian just needed to rid himself of that authoritarianism that kept him thinking of players older than him as better by default.

Finbar drank from his water, doing his best to keep a straight face as the woman talked. Her planning company? He had somewhat sussed out that she had been working during his niece’s wedding, but that it had been her own company she had been there for, that he hadn’t seen.

Her question had him chuckling. It wasn’t often that people didn’t recognise him, and while that was sometimes mildly annoying, in this case… he found it refreshing. The witch was stunning, obviously smart too and she had her own business, which in Finbar’s estimation set her apart from other women he had met. “Killian’s Maura’s brother,” he corrected her gently as he set his water down and made sure that the condensation that had gathered on the glass had made his fingers wet as he extended his hand to her. “Finbar Quigley,” he introduced himself. “My apologies for interrupting your reading, I just didn’t want to miss the chance to actually meet you now that it was here, Miss..?”

Cho looked him up and down briefly before taking his hand, "Cho Chang. Owner and operator of Charming Parties." She smiled at him now, more genuinely, a little less cynically.

And then she cocked her head, dropping his hand, "Wait a minute, you're the quidditch pro Quigley." She didn't recognize him by face but the name certainly caught her attention. "I apologize, I don't tend to know players by their faces. A Chess fan in your off time, yeah?"

She settled back in her seat, taking up her wine, feeling more comfortable now that she knew his motives - or she figured she did - and knew who he was.

“Pleasure to meet you, Miss Chang,” Finbar smiled back, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. “And again, splendid job on keeping the mastodon of a wedding personal and the bride from going completely spare.” Cho had been gorgeous before, but as the distrust and distance in her smile faded, she was striking.

The cock of her head had his attention shift slightly, ready for whichever salvo she could think of to fire at him. But it wasn’t anything like he had feared, because of course she recognised his name, and fortunately didn’t immediately connect it to Ruby. “Yeah,” he chuckled, not minding her recognition at all. “That would be me, though I think I prefer Finbar, Beater for the Ballycastle Bats,” before he held up a hand and shook his head in response to her apology. “No need for apologies.” For a moment, he considered her question then made a small waving gesture with his hand. “More of a Killian fan, if I’m being completely honest. You play?” Looking up he caught sight of Krum, and sent him a small nod in greeting. He would talk to him later. “Or do you just come here for the peace and quiet?”

When he complimented her work again she felt a small blush warm her cheeks and her smiled grew just a bit. He certainly was a complimentary good looking bloke, that was sure, but she couldn't help but wonder at his interest in the wedding - perhaps he was gay? Maybe he was straight but a metrosexual (was that the muggle word...)?

Laughing lightly - a tinkling sound, she liked to think - she answered, "In my book you'd probably be better known just as a Pro. I'm a Tornados fan from birth.

She thought on her response for a moment, lightly chewing her bottom lip before answering, "If I want piece and quiet, I tend to stay away from the bar, but I do find here in the Roost you can get some good reading in with a nice background noise of the horrible dismemberment of chess pieces," she joked. Lifting her glass she shrugged, "I like Chess, though I'm not very good at it, strategy has always been something I've admired."

She still couldn't quite figure him out, and he didn't seem to be paying much attention to his... Nephew? Cousin? She hadn't been able to keep track as to how they were related, but Killian, either way, despite his saying that was his reason for attending.
