It's funny, the way things go when you leave home for the first time. I've been feeling lonely, so I go back to my family's house, and the result is that it sometimes feels like I needn't have bothered moving out at all.

I'm not lonely in the sense that I think I need a relationship to make me whole. I'm lonely in the sense that I come home to an empty flat and sometimes I wish there was someone or something waiting there to greet me when I come home at night. The more I think this, the more I think it might be nice to get a pet of some description. I don't think I'd want anything overtly magical because then those family members on my father's side would be unable to visit me, I think. And I wouldn't want an owl for the same reason: too hard to explain. A dog is too needy, and I don't know that I could devote the time to a dog that it would need to be happy.

A cat? Cats are lovely creatures, so graceful and elegant, and they are reasonably self sufficient, as far as I can tell. I think that might be the way to go for me. I will get myself a tiny kitten to love.

I have seen dogs. They are revoltingly needy - so much so that it actually aggravates me. A cat could never be as bad as the dog my friend had.

Like I said, it depends on the personality. Cats are nocturnal. They enjoy middle of the night playtime. They can be very demanding with their meows. They learn quickly, which can be both good and bad, depending on what they are learning. Again, like I said, they make good pets. But to think they cannot be clingy or needy is wrong, and I speak from personal experience of having cats right now and of having had a cat in the past who enjoyed sitting on me while I sleep, following me to the toilet, jumping in the shower with me (strange little thing, that one, but I didn't mind), mewing demands if I didn't put out food fast enough or pet long enough (or any other number of things), and they do get lonely and miss you when you're gone. Some will even bring in dead animals to show you they love you. I prefer the sock hunting cats personally. Does that make them "revoltingly needy?" Depends on who you ask. Either way, they can be needy and they make good pets.
