Cousins
Who: Greg and Marcus
What: Showing Greg around Monument Alley
Where: Monument Alley, Finnigan's
When: Sunday, midafternoon
Rating: SFW? Because the two big muscular Slytherins are actually not that sweary, who'd have thought?

Greg stood with his arms crossed in the open doorway of his flat while Mrs McHavelock shook a cat at him. "You terrified my poor little Feverfew! I told that girl you'd be trouble!" The cat hissed, showing all its teeth and it was all Greg could do not to snarl back at the stupid animal. He wouldn't have terrified it if it hadn't wound its way around his feet while he was trying to walk up the stairs! He'd already said as much, but Mrs McHavelock wasn't in a listening mood. "And you woke me up this morning! I'm not a young woman, I need my rest! You can't just go stomping up and down stairs like a hippocampus dragging a wet fishtail!" Feverfew, evidently bored of the confrontation, chose that moment to twist in its owners grip and swipe a paw, claws extended, down Mrs McHavelock's pastel jumper.

"Look at what you've done! She used to be such a sweet little thing and now she's moody as a -"

"Maybe she's hungry," Greg suggested, cutting the elderly woman off before she could unload another painful simile. She looked as if she were about to respond when they heard the downstairs door open. "Who's that?" Mrs McHavelock asked waspishly, peering down the stairs towards the front door. "What are you doing just walking in?"

Figuring that by now, Greg was probably at least semi-settled in, Marcus was taking it upon himself to make sure that his cousin at least knew some of the places in Monument Alley so that he wasn't stuck in the work-home cycle that had taken over Marcus' life when he'd first come to London. He'd slept in a little later than intended on Sunday, so it wasn't until after lunch time that he managed to drag himself out of the house and towards the building where he knew Greg had moved in.

Marcus paused in the entryway at the question, leaning slightly to his left so that he could look up the stairs. "I'm looking for one of your tenants?" he answered, sounding slightly tentative about his own answer. This must be the infamous Mrs. McHavelock, and he really didn't want to make Greg's life difficult by inadvertently upsetting his landlady.

"If you could just point me in the correct direction of Gregory Goyle's flat, I will be out of your hair, ma'am," he said, holding out his hands in what was hopefully a placating manner.

Mrs McHavelock stared at Marcus for a long moment, then at Greg, then back at Marcus. She opened her mouth to speak - just as Feverfew wriggled out of her grip and went streaking towards the open front door. "Up there," she barked out, pushing past Marcus and following her cat out the door before slamming it behind her.

Greg finally uncrossed his arms, relieved that she'd gone and happy to see his cousin. "She'd been going on about that stupid cat for twenty minutes," he complained as he stepped aside to let Marcus in. He hadn't quite wrapped his head around the fact that this was his life now, that his mother had really told him to move out and he wouldn't be able to go back in a week when he got fed up of Mrs McHavelock and George Weasley and 'Monument' Alley.

He picked the Daily Prophet up from the floor where he'd dropped it when his landlady accosted him. "How was your game Friday?" He'd missed it, not having set the wireless up yet and then being distracted by shopping with Pansy. Shopping which hadn't made much of a difference to his flat - the furniture they'd bought would be delivered in the next few days.

With a raised eyebrow, Marcus back into the wall to let the woman pass, and then let out a huff of relief once she was gone. Following Greg inside, he shook his head at the compliant, and offered, "Give it bit. Once you're settled and she's adjusted to you being here, maybe things will get better."

Glancing around, Marcus could see that he recognized almost everything in the flat from vising the Goyle family home, he frowned at little at the couch sitting in the living room, because he knew for a fact how uncomfortable it was. He looked back over at Greg's question, and shrugged as he answered, "Well enough, I suppose, since we won. I hate playing with reserves though." At this point, Roger couldn't get better fast enough, in Marcus' opinion.

Eying the couch again, Marcus said, "I was going to take you out to Finnigan's, but getting something instead of that monstrosity might be a higher priority than knowing where the pub is."

"She doesn't like me." It wasn't exactly the first time Greg had run into someone who didn't like him and contrary to popular opinion he was not too stupid to tell. With Mrs McHavelock he wasn't sure if it was because of his involvement in the war, his family name, Pansy's demands or just the fact that he was too big and too intimidating. It didn't matter, he couldn't change any of them.

He nodded at Marcus's assessment of the game, smiling a little. "Congratulations." He liked when the Arrows won and this season they seemed to be doing very well. "It's... Davies that's injured, right?" He frowned. He didn't want anything mucking up his team's chances. "Going to be back soon?"

Following Marcus's eyes to the couch, he laughed and held up a hand as if to say 'no shopping'. "Pansy already took care of it. New furniture's arriving while I'm at work on Monday." He had mostly let Pansy make the decisions, but he had insisted on testing the couch and had settled for something with a high back and deep cushions. He was looking forward to its arrival. "The pub sounds good."

Marcus frowned a little at that, and said, "She doesn't have to like you, but she does have to be a fair landlord." And he wouldn't just sit by if it came up that she was treating Greg wrongly for no good reason.

Returning the smile with a small one of his own, Marcus answered, "Thanks." The expression fell at the question, mostly because it reminded him of exactly why Roger was injured. "Yeah. He should be healed in time for next week's game."

He let out a small sigh of relief at the answer, because furniture shopping was not something he'd want to do in his spare time. "Thank Salazar for Pansy Parkinson," he said, and then clapped a hand on Greg's shoulder. "Let's go then, shall we?" He pushed Greg towards the door, which was an odd feeling - most of the time he had to be careful of his strength, with his size being larger than everyone else, but Greg was able to handle it if Marcus occasionally forgot himself.

Greg snorted, not unfamiliar with Marcus's protective side, but fairly certain he could look after himself when it came to Mrs McHavelock. And if he couldn't, he had both Marcus and Pansy to turn to. "I'm just glad she doesn't live here." It was bad enough that she would be downstairs in the shop most of the time, having her actually live in the building would be awful.

"That's good, isn't it?" Greg asked, confused by the fact Marcus was frowning over Davies being back for next week. "It's not good to be out for too long." Not only because of the games that he might miss, but because without training he could get out of practice. Anything longer than a couple of weeks could wreak havoc.

Greg let Marcus steer him towards the door, pausing only to ward the flat behind him. He had basic wards up all the time, to keep anyone but those he trusted most from apparating into his flat. He added extra layers when he left, just in case. "I'll drink to that," he said when he'd finished. "And to hoping she doesn't find another excuse to drag me shopping until Christmas."

Shuddering a little at the possibilities that might arise if that were the case, Marcus nodded. "At least there's that." He didn't need to offer his assistance if Greg ran into any trouble - his cousin knew he'd be there if necessary.

"Yeah, it's good," he answered, forcing half a smile onto his face, because if Greg hadn't heard exactly what had happened for Roger to be on bed rest, Marcus certainly wasn't going to go over it again. "It was just unfortunate that he was out in the first place."

Waiting patiently as Greg added his extra wards - Marcus couldn't judge, he did the same thing - he let out an amused snort. "Agreed," he said, because he adored Pansy, but shopping was not a pastime he found himself enjoying.

Leading the way downstairs and outside, he asked, "So, how you gone exploring at all, or have you been coped up inside for the last two days? Shopping with Pansy doesn't count."

Greg nodded. He did have some idea of what had happened, he'd listened to the match in which Roger had taken his injury - but it would never have occurred to him that Marcus would feel guilt over that. These things happened in quidditch and Davies obviously wasn't completely out of commission.

"I found the cake shop," Greg answered with a slight quirk of his lips. Greg's sweet-tooth was well known and had gotten him in trouble once or twice, but at least he knew Marcus shared it. "Other than that..." He shrugged. He wasn't yet convinced he hadn't preferred this place when it was Knockturn Alley. Now it all felt a bit like it was trying too hard.

Marcus grinned at the answer, because he could definitely understand having a sweet tooth. "Probably the best place to have discovered," he commented with a small smile of his own.

"Other than that, the pub's probably the place you'd find yourself most often," he said when Greg shrugged. "The other places are interesting and all, but they tend to specialize, as far as I've found. But if you ever need something, I'm sure we can find it." As they continued down the street, he then added, "Unless it's just food, in which case your first stop should just be my kitchen. You're in the wards, so you can get in even if I'm not there."

"The cinnamon pastry was good," Greg agreed. It had been too early in the morning to buy a proper cake, but he was planning to go back. After he got paid.

He glanced around as they walked, taking in the changes and 'improvements'. There was a park now, with a wishing well. They'd really done everything they could to get rid of all traces of what had once been here. Greg found it a little unsettling. Not that he had any need of shrunken heads of illegal potions ingredients, but it was just another way the world was changing. "Pub sounds good," was all he said for a moment. He liked to drink, and he preferred not to do it alone. He did smile at the offer of food, though. "Nattie and Pansy stocked my kitchen, but if they ever forget I'll come over."

Nodding his agreement, he answered, "The chocolate croissant was very good the last time I was there."

Marcus chuckled at little at both the comments, and as they stepped inside Finnigan's, he said, "Of course they did." He'd have to remember to thank Pansy in some subtle way, since she'd probably bristle at any large gesture of gratitude.

As he led the way to the bar, he told Greg, "They play all the matches airing on the WWN downstairs, if you're ever interested in not listening alone." He wasn't entirely sure of the chances of that, but figured that it couldn't hurt to mention it.

Greg looked around the pub with some interest. It seemed to have a much younger crowd than The Leaky Cauldron, which he supposed was a good thing. "Maybe I will." He was glad Marcus had always understood why he preferred not to come to Quidditch matches anymore. He'd watched his cousin at Hogwarts, of course, but ever since his trip to St Mungo's after the battle, the noise was just too much for him. Sometimes he thought he ought to give it another go, it had been a long time and he was more used to the noise level now.

"You come here a lot?" he asked. If Marcus was likely to be found here, he might make a habit of dropping in. He had a feeling he was going to be needing a drink after his first few days of work.

Marcus nodded again at that, because it wasn't as though he could expect much more. Maybe eventually Greg would feel comfortable coming to an actual game again, but until then, at least he could offer a decent substitute.

"Sometimes," he answered. "It all depends on practice and matches, but if I have free time, then yeah, I tend to wind up here." After a pause to order both of them a beer, he continued, "And it tends to be the most popular gathering place I've encountered."

"So, other than shopping with Pansy, how have you been settling in?" he asked, mostly out of concern for his cousin's well-being. Marcus knew that moving out hadn't exactly been Greg's choice, since his mother was as overbearing and controlling as Marcus' father had been before his death - it had been easy to see how the two were related.

"It seems alright." This was about as positive as Greg was willing to be on any new thing - even one recommended by friends. Over time, he'd solidify his assessment and decide how he felt one way or another. For now, he had beer and that was good.

He shrugged in response to the question. Marcus had already seen about as much as he needed to make an assessment. Mrs McHavelock didn't like him, he still didn't know where half his belongings were and he didn't understand why he had had to move out in the first place. Something about Dinnywick MacMillan, so Greg supposed he didn't like him either. It had been six years since his father's death but the idea of his mother with anyone else was almost as confusing as Pansy and Draco no longer being a couple. Maybe more so. She'd be Catherine MacMillan, which just didn't seem right. "It's hard to sleep," he admitted. His flat was too noisy outside and too quiet within. He was used to his mother's house with his mother in it and the house-elfs and nothing but country outside. Here, the building was empty at night apart from him but the club and the pub let noisy people out into the night.

Nodding his head, Marcus left that at that, because he knew Greg would come around to new things on his own time and not before. And no one could be expected to make an immediate judgement right after walking in the door of a place for the first time.

The changes were pretty big ones for Greg, as far as Marcus was aware. He'd left his family home by choice, having already found his profession, so he couldn't quite relate to what his cousin was going through. But that didn't mean he was unsympathetic to the massive shift in Greg's life, and even with his own life alterations having been self-induced, he'd had trouble sleeping the first few weeks in his new flat as well. "It gets easier as time goes by," he said reassuringly.
