Broom shopping
Who: Harry, Logan & Teddy
What: Shopping for a new broom for Teddy
Where: Bludgers and Broomsticks
When: Saturday morning (9/13/14)
Rating: SFW, there's a child present!

Harry Apparated to Andromeda's early Saturday morning, not only because he'd heard there would be waffles for breakfast but because he wanted to get an early start on the day. He'd kept Teddy waiting long enough for a new broom. So after waffles, and the customary life update Andromeda expected every time Harry came over complete with turning down her offer to set him up with her gardener, Harry and Teddy Apparated back to Diagon Alley. They took their time walking down the street, and Harry promised they'd get ice cream later as they passed Fortescue's.

When they reached Bludgers and Broomsticks, Teddy was nearly vibrating with excitement. His hair was an electric blue and Harry wouldn't be surprised if he floated off the ground. He placed a hand on Teddy's shoulder as they walked into the store, hoping it would be enough to keep Teddy from running around and touching everything. "Remember what we talked about," Harry reminded Teddy, then looked around for Logan. Spotting him toward the back, Harry led his godson in that direction. Before he could even call out a hello, Teddy was chattering away.

"Hi, I'm Teddy. I'm almost six and a half, and I need a new broom please. My last one got small, Grand says I'm growing like a weed. Do you have any purple brooms with red racing stripes? I like purple and red the best." To illustrate that, his hair turned a bright purple with red stripes. "How's about a broom that changes color like me?"

Harry sighed, and gave Logan a small wave. "Hey. Uh, obviously we're here for a broom, but if you were in the middle of something we can look around for a bit."

Logan nodded somberly as Teddy made each and every requirement for his broom clear. There were already a selection of base brooms that would work for someone who was six, with plenty of room for growth. "Appearances aren't everything," he warned the child as he stood and straightened, beckoning the pair back where the youth brooms were kept.

He looked at Harry. "A lot of these are meant for young fliers so it should be something he can easily handle. Plus, they're customizable." That, he learned, was often more important than how fast or high a broom could go. It was almost always about looks. "I, uh, do have the safety brochures if his Gran wants to look over them."

They followed Logan to the youth department, and after reminding Teddy to look not touch, he allowed the boy to survey the choices. Appearances might not be everything, but to a six year old they were very important.

While Teddy browsed, Harry stood back with Logan. "Customization is great, especially with him." Teddy's hair was running through the rainbow as he looked over the brooms. "He thinks that since he can change his hair color on a whim, everything should be able to change color whenever he wants." It was something they were working on.

At the mention of the safety brochures he winced, then nodded. "I should read them too. I think Andromeda expects me to try to teach him the Wronksi Feint or something. I keep reminding her, I didn't try that move until I was fourteen. She's seen me come in after a fly once too often with bruises to be entirely comfortable." Not that Harry would ever do anything to endanger Teddy, but he understood why Andromeda was cautious. Teddy was her only remaining family, unless one counted Narcissa and Harry never did.

Logan's mouth quirked up. Bruises were common when it came to flying. If you didn't have bruises then you were doing something wrong. His mother had been understanding enough, plus if there was anything truly terrible his healer aunt was just down the lane, probably berating his uncle for the similar bruises. "There are charms that can be put on the broom that can prevent sudden dives such as that."

When the child began to circle around a particular broom, Logan moved forward, crouching down once more. "What do you think?" he mock-whispered, as if they were discussing something sacred and personal. Not that he would disagree with that particular sentiment. Next to a wand, the broom was the most personalized object a wizard or witch could own. "There's no starburst yet, but we can put one on. Or we can do a roaring lion or flying eagle." All of the house mascots were popular choices. "I just did a dragon that was really cool."

"Those could come in handy." Harry grinned back, then looked over to check on Teddy, who was doing just fine on his own for now. "I'll make sure Andromeda knows I know about them." He was fairly certain she knew about them; she had raised Tonks after all.

Harry stood back, letting Logan do his thing. He wanted Teddy to make his own choice this time around. Teddy was eying Logan too, the suspicious and speculative look on his face out of place on a six year old. Harry looked away to smother a grin.

"Can you do a badger and a wolf? And a purple racing stripe?"
