RP: Buying a dog
Who: Susan and Rolf

What: Susan is getting a animal companion

Where: The Bestiary, Monument Alley

When: Thursday September 11, 10:00

Rating: SFW

It was nearly 9 o'clock before Susan dragged herself out of bed. The previous day had been spent groaning and clinging to her pillow in the early morning, followed by a late morning suppressing a sixth sense that was telling her that one of her boys was upset or annoyed, and then by an afternoon fretting about how Adrian was going to go with Alicia, ending with an evening of watching television and filling out excessively dull paperwork. As such, she was keen to actually get something done with her remaining day of compassionate leave before making an appearance at work the next.

To that end, she found herself apparating then strolling down Monument Alley - avoiding Finnigan's because she actually wasn't and alcoholic thank you - and browsing aimlessly until she found herself in front of The Bestiary on the corner of Diagon Alley. Pausing for a moment, she walked into the cool and pleasantly lit store, past the pet supplies and the long wooden counter. Looking around, she noted with wry amusement that like her house, it was definitely bigger on the inside than it looked - generations of spell work no doubt. She was about to head up towards the animals whenl she saw Rolf, walking towards her with a huge grin. "Can't help a girl buy a... something, can you?"

Life did happen, but it was still sad. He wasn't one to dismiss emotions, most of the time, at least.

It was lucky his back was to her when she spoke, because once the idea struck him he couldn't help the mischievous expression that crossed his face. She'd catch it immediately, he knew her, so he had to use the fact that she couldn't see him for now. He closed the Basenji's gate and locked it and moved on, trying not to smirk too much in case she caught up with him. "All right, let's try this then," he said, managing to keep his amusement from his voice as he knelt and opened a smaller kennel, reaching out and pulling out a smart, fluffy Pomeranian.

"Oh Rolf, what are you like," she asked with a snort, as he brought her up to a small, fluffy pomeranian which appeared to be composed entirely of rage. "I think that we would become territorial with one another and I refuse point blank to surrender my bedroom to a fluffy quaffle." She gave him a pointed look and mimed a blow to his head as he began to laugh in earnest. "You're hilarious Scamander. Hilarious. Can we get one that is intelligent, nice, and not named Sparkles of Mister Popo?"

Rolf's shoulders started shaking before he made any kind of sound. The snickers slipped out then, and then the outright laughter of pure amusement. "You mean the dustbunny of doom," he said through his laughter. He hadn't been able to help himself, honestly he hadn't. He had known this one wouldn't be a match, but the look on her face had been priceless. "Aye aye, Susan. I think I have a real one over here."

He stowed the dog -- not named Sparkles, though now he was tempted -- and rose stiffly, leading her only a little farther back. "She's about a year old, as far as we can determine, which means she'll get a bit bigger yet. Samoyeds aren't tiny, but they are fluffy. Not very aggressive, but they can be good guard dogs, at least for alerting," he said. He might have a poor memory in some things, but when it came to these kinds of things, he retained a ton.

Laughing, Susan whacked him gently as he laughed, something that only made him laugh harder. "The dustbunny of doom is very cute," she agreed, but definitely not for me. "You'd better not be Scamming me," she said, the pun punishment enough for his antics.

She followed Rolf, and then she saw her. The most gorgeous dog she'd ever seen. "Oh hi there," she said, with a huge grin, kneeling down in front of the Samoyed. "I'm Susan, and it's very nice to meet you!" The dog wagged her tail and tilted her head quizzically. Calmly, Susan lifted her hand and held it out for the dog to sniff. The dog sniffed it and barked happily, wagging its tail. "She seems very smart," she said, conversationally to Rolf - earning her another head tilt from the dog. "She'd make an excellent guard dog. There's a lot of advanced warding systems that you can tie around a dog you know. Like the identification and release charm can have a secondary node woven into whereby if the dog recognises the person, it will release them. Very useful."

Rolf pulled a face at her and then grinned at the pun.

Rolf got out of her way, letting her get into the pen. Even with the obvious bond in the making, he watched carefully. He did with every animal, just to make sure. Accidents made in enthusiasm were still accidents, but it didn't seem like there would be one here.

"I've seen some of those, yes," Rolf agreed. He could cast many of them, though some he hadn't done in years. He'd been out and about and warding against other things on his expeditions, for the most part, though being back here had brought back a portion of his paranoia about people. "We've been calling her She-Ra, but it is possible to change it if the animal is agreeable to it," he told her.

Susan was aware of Rolf keeping a close eye on them, and smiled winsomely at him before turning back to the dog. "You're so beautiful, aren't you," she cooed, receiving a lick to the face for her efforts. Laughing, she put her arms around the dog and hugged her.

"They're very useful actually, and the residual magic tends to keep the dogs healthier and increase their longevity," she said, still hugging the dog who seemed to accept this all very calmly. She leant back and made a face. "She-Ra? That doesn't sound like you at all. What about something slightly punny? How about Shadow?" The dog wagged her tail and barked happily. "Shadow it is then," Susan said with a smile. "Can I buy her? Also I need everything else - dog bed, kennel, food, leash, collar, expect me to overtip."

He grinned, somewhat cheesily (or so he'd been told in the past) as he watched a bond start to form already. There was just something about it, it made him all warm and fuzzy inside.

"It does. And I think she grew up in a magical home, so that's a bonus in that regard." Magical residue and being bred in a magical home always seemed to make any effects even more. THey wouldn't live forever, not any more than a person, witch or wizard or Muggle, could, but their life spans were increased.

"You can. She is for sale, not just adoption, but you get the good-friend discount," he told her with a charming smile. "And we'll get everything she needs. How elaborate of a kennel do you want? We have everything from simple to oh-the-Galleons," he said somewhat wryly.

"I'm glad she's still young," Susan said thoughtfully, as her face received a generous licking. "Young enough to train and bond with, but old enough to be toile trained." She got up and thoughtfully scratched Shadow behind the ears, an action that appeared to send the dog into a state of pure bliss. "Magical dogs are a bonus too, as you say. I won't freak her out the first time I cast a spell."

She paused and considered for a moment. "Well I'd like a nice sturdy kennel for if she wants to go outside, but I think I might let her sleep inside. There's a cupboard under the stairs by the front door that I can turn into a little inside kennel for her? Put a dog bed in there, maybe a water bowl? Plus I want a nice bed for her for the living area. What do you think?"

"Definitely toilet trained," he said with a nod. There were a few here that weren't, but most were. He worked with as many as he could every day. "And if you need help with any additional training, we do that here." Well, currently he was the only one who did that.

"Sounds good. Bit bigger on the inside, but not palatial?" he said, handing her a leash before leading the way toward a wall of different kennels, scanning them to see which one he thought might be best. "So kennel, two water bowls, bed, a couple of toys to start with, some treats, food, of course."

He hoisted a large bag of dogfood on one shoulder, adjusting it so it didn't throw him off balance on his bad side, and the string of other things slowly floating behind him. Except the kennel. He'd come back for that. He carried the bag with surprising ease, if one didn't know what lay under his sweater. "Can you think of anything else?" he asked her as he headed around the counter.
