Journal - A useful list
Seamus, you are subtle as a sack of Kneezle dung, and since you're having issues I shall leave this list here for general use of friends. You'll know why if you need to.

- Paint pigments: titanium white, Moroccan green and burnt umber in particular.
- Detail brushes: good quality and very fine.
- Bakeware: anything
- Art books: old books, anything really interesting

I'm not having issues. I never have issues, of any kind!

I don't need to tell myself that. Everyone else tells me, all the time, every day. You're just never around to hear it.

All right, now I'm curious. What prompted this list? Did Seamus destroy a few things that need replacing?

Sunday. Well, I'm fairly sure that's why he was asking. It's possible he has other reasons.

And no, he didn't break anything this time.

Still not ringing a bell. Sunday's just another day, right? You don't go to church, do you? Lots of gorgeous art at churches completely free and at your disposal.

Yet.

Sunday's his birthday. We're doing a thing in The Roost after Battlescars, I'm skipping out on LBB for the week. Can you come?

I guess I should maybe have told people about this... Bring food!

I know it is, but I thought it would be fun to pretend I forgot.

Lucky for you I'm off this weekend, I'll be there. I'm guessing by food you don't mean Mum's haggis. I've been thinking of experimenting with this flaky Russian salmon dish, so maybe I'll use everyone as a guinea pig.

Oh, and I'll bring a bouquet of Mum's Ever-Changing Roses to help decorate. Anything else you need?

Since you're not my mother the answer is no, no church on Sundays, although you're not wrong about the art. Some church architecture is pretty spectacular too.

Don't tempt fate, dammit.

Another fellow August birthday person?

I know it says "Bakeware: anything" but is there anything in particular? Because I have a kitchen full if you ever want to try something out before acquiring.

Yes, actually. Happy Birthday to you for whenever yours is or was.

Honestly there isn't anything specific. I have big sheets for biscuits and cookies, bun and muffin tins, and a couple of cake tin sizes already so I have decent basics. That said I technically borrowed a couple from family so if I get my own they could have them back, but I think they've given up on them now. Anything else just means I get to try out new recipes. Thank you though.

Is. Thank you, and Happy Birthday to you, too!

So, basic bakeware, more or less, or would the more specialized items also be of interest? (New techniques rather than new recipes, more or less).

Oh, I'm interested in the specialised stuff. Just not really used it before. I keep wanting to try out madeleines but I don't have a tin. I should probably stop baking sheet cakes in my roasting tin too.

I also want a bamboo steaming basket, I should probably add that to my list.

I like to experiment, it's fun. and it keeps me distracted

I have to admit that professionally I'm cringing at the thought of sheet cakes being baked in a roasting tin, but personally I have to admit, that if it's there and it fulfills a need, then why not go for it?

If you're not too concerned about the shape, you can make madeleine molds out of tin foil, or you can use a sheet pan and then cut them into squares onces baked. It would give you an idea of what the batter is like to work with, but no, it wouldn't give them the original madeleine shape.

Experimenting is what makes baking fun!

Yes, well it was the best I could do. My cake tin options otherwise were loaf shape or round. It worked okay.

I hadn't thought of that. I'll make a note and try them out next time I bake.

It is. It is also sometimes what makes my friends cringe. Accidentally overdone chilli or lavender is not your friend.

As long as it worked out, that's what matters.

I think that anything overdone isn't anybody's friend, but yeah, those two are, unfortunately, easy to overdo.

I like chilli, not all of my friends on the receiving end do quite so much. And lavender just tastes awful, sadly that was one I sent out without tasting. Not popular that day, believe me.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like chili, too, but not to the point where you only feel the burn rather than the burn enhancing the other flavours of the dish. Lavender is only for the fragrance, but even that can all to easily become overpowering. At least in my experience.
