Harry and Roger
Who: Harry & Roger
What: A friendly visit
Where: Roger's flat
When: 10th Sept, early afternoon
Rating: SFW
Status: Ongoing, Closed

Harry had dragged himself out of bed and into the office, feeling like a dozen hippogriffs had run him over. Hangover potions, such as they were, never worked without making him feel sicker than the actual hangover, so he was stuck with Muggle pain killers and a raging headache. He felt like shit, and looked even worse, which probably explained why Savage had taken one look at him and ordered him to take forty-eight hours of personal time. Chernoknizhnik’s death had hit them all hard, but Harry knew he handled loss worse than most people. He took each hit personally, wondering if there could have been anything he could have done to avoid the situation, despite not having been directly involved in this one.

So he'd gone home, tried to get more sleep and called that a failed mission when he just lay staring at the ceiling for an hour, stomach roiling and head pounding as he mentally walked through what had happened. Knowing he would drive himself crazy if he kept this up, he forced himself up and into the shower. He spelled the water as hot as he could handle it, and spent another hour trying to drown himself. The water pressure in the flat was excellent, helped along by a couple more spells courtesy of Hermione's clever wand, and the pounding had eased his headache a fraction by the time he toweled himself dry.

At a loss for what to do next, Harry remembered that Roger was housebound and had requested company. Preferring the little funny little flip his stomach did when he thought of Roger to the churning it did when he thought about Chernoknizhnik, a visit sounded like just the thing to help ease him past the rest of the hangover. Just a friendly visit, he reminded himself as he rounded up whatever he could think of that would amuse the Quidditch player, and then Apparated to Roger's flat. He knocked at the door before he could talk himself out of it, and hoped Roger didn't already have company.

It took Harry a moment to find his voice, he hadn't been prepared for a nearly naked Roger. At least it had driven all thoughts of the funeral out of his head. "Uh, I didn't interrupt anything did I?" He hoped not, and had to bite his tongue to keep from blurting out that Roger could stay in the towel if he wanted. Friends, Harry, just friends.

But Roger just waved his hand at the living area, and disappeared to put on pants. Harry looked around the flat with interest, but hadn't quite made himself at home by the time Roger got back.

"Hope you don't mind the company. I have a couple days off, and didn't want to stay home. I don't know if I'll be good company, but I thought you might like some anyway."

Roger closed his eyes for a moment, and sighed. "I seem to have as hitherto undiscovered magical ability to be getting out of the shower whenever someone knocks on my door, sorry about that old boy."

He walked in and threw on a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, before walking out and chuckling at Harry looking around the flat with wide eyes. "My grandparents decided to start trying to buy my affection back, so I have a flat and a car."

He smiled and gently pushed Harry down on the sofa, and walked into the kitchen. "I love company, stops me from focusing on how itchy my ribs are." He opened the fridge and grabbed himself a bottle of beer. "Can I get you a drink?"

"That's, uh, a really nice ability," Harry said, clearing his throat. Friends, he reminded himself for the upteenth time. He really needed to stop being such a git about things, but it seemed that ever since he'd allowed himself to find men as attractive as women, he couldn't help but notice that all his male friends were wildly attractive. He was just thankful he hadn't developed a crush on Ron or Neville; Roger and Oliver were much better choices in that regard, even if nothing would come of it.

He looked up at Roger as he came back, relieved that he was now clothed. It was easier to focus when he didn't have to stare at Roger's naked chest. Though it had been a very nice sight, he allowed himself to think that much. "Well, I don't know about buying affection, but this is nice. Suits you."

Letting himself be pushed down on the sofa, and trying not to apply that to other situations as well, he shook his head at the question. Then realizing Roger couldn't see him, answered, "Nothing alcoholic. I don't think my stomach could take it after last night." He was still a bit queasy, though it was slowly dissipating. "Just some water would be great."

Roger smirked and poked Harry in the stomach as he walked back out. "It's okay lad, I'm not going to ravish you or anything untoward like that." He shrugged indifferently. "They cut mum and I off 'til a few years ago because my dad was their personal pilot or something. I've never met the man so I've no idea. They have no idea what to do with me so they just fling money at me."

He snorted and grabbed himself a beer and a glass of water for Harry. "What was the occasion for all the drinking? Wasn't to do with the post Susan made in the journals the other day was it?"

Wish you would, Harry thought, and then was extremely glad he hadn't said that outloud. Not only because it would have been humiliating, but also because he wasn't sure if it was true. Roger was nice to think about, but he wasn't sure he was ready for anything more than thoughts. Especially not with a friend. He didn't want to ruin anything.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to poke at a sore area." He knew all about indifferent relatives, though thankfully he hadn't had to deal with the Dursleys in person for years. There was the occasional Christmas card, but nothing more extravagant than that.

He sighed, wishing he hadn't said anything. "Yeah. We went out last night, and you can imagine how that went. I think they call them Irish wakes?"

Roger nearly laughed at Harry's expression at the mention of ravishment and decided that soon, very soon, he was going to have to take him out and get him laid. Nothing fixed the whole pre-first time with a man jitters like actually going and having your first time with a man.

He waved Harry's apology aside with a laugh. "Don't even worry about it. It's their loss and they are trying to fix the problem. The lack of contact probably wasn't helped by the fact that mum ran off to live in rural Oxfordshire."

He nodded sagely and patted Harry on the back. "Irish wakes are the best way to go, lad. Celebrate the person's life, don't cry about their death."

Harry got the feeling he was missing something, and that Roger was laughing at him, but it wasn't in an unpleasant way and he had a feeling he knew what it was about. Roger wasn't an idiot, and Harry had been pretty obvious about his attraction; Roger was just too polite to mention it. Harry appreciated the other man saving him the embarrassment, when his attraction wasn't reciprocated. He'd just have to get over it.

"Well, that's good. That they're trying." He wondered if it would be too personal to ask why his mother had run off to rural Oxfordshire. For all that he and Roger were friends, Harry realized he didn't actually know much about him, aside from the obvious. "Is she still in rural Oxfordshire?"

Harry relaxed back into the couch, drawing his legs up so he could wrap his arms around them. "It's what she'd have wanted, and we did our best last night. More than our best. I haven't been that drunk in recent memory."

Roger nodded thoughtfully, taking a sip of his beer. "Yeah I suppose it is nice. Apparently I'm meant to call them Yia Yia and Papou which is a bit weird." He chuckled at Harry's slightly confused expression and shook his head. "No, my grandparents bought her a big house in Surrey. To answer the question you didn't ask, she ran away because after getting pregnant to a pilot," he said, adopting an appallingly polished accent. "They disowned her, and she didn't want to be found so she went back to the UK and got lost. My Aunt finally tracked her down a couple of years ago after looking for like ten years."

He shook his head and gave a half smile. "Sometimes it's good to let your hair down I think. You work hard, you do. Though the setting leaves a bit to be desired."

"That's...Greek?" He was pretty sure he remembered that Roger was half Greek, and he had some familiarity with the language after a case involving a stolen Greek artefact and a botched Dark ritual from last year. He'd needed a crash course in the language to work with his Greek counterparts. "That's...really shitty of them, actually. I'm sorry that happened." He didn't understand families sometimes. Maybe because he'd never had a real one of his own that he could remember. But he couldn't imagine disowning a hypothetical daughter because she'd gotten pregnant, pilot or no pilot.

Roger really did have a nice smile, he thought, then pushed the thought away. Friendly. He didn't know how many times he was going to have to remind himself of that, but eventually it would stick. "There's a lot of work to be done. I keep thinking the world will run out of people playing with the Dark Arts, and I keep being proven wrong." Some days it was exhausting, and this week happened to be full of exhausting days.

Roger nodded, lifting a brow in surprise. "Yeah, my mum's half Greek and half Irish, my father was er, well whatever he was. Or is I suppose." He shrugged and reached over to ruffle Harry's hair. "I know you are, champ. Probably because you're not a shipping billionaire or a former crime boss."

He snorted contemptuously. "There'll always be people who are desperate, power-hungry, or stupid enough to turn to the dark arts, unfortunately." He looked out his window for a moment. "Still, you're obviously very good at it!"

Harry tried to grin as Roger ruffled his hair, but couldn't quite muster it so settled for a cross between a grimace and a glare. Hair ruffling was something you did to someone you thought of as someone akin a younger sibling, and that was the opposite of what Harry wanted Roger to think of him as. Also, it made his hair stick up even more than it did normally, which was saying quite a lot. "A former crime boss? Really? The shipping billionaire I can believe." Roger's family was certainly interesting.

"Well, I've been doing it since I was eleven. I suppose if I wasn't good at it by now, things would have turned out entirely differently." He didn't mean to sound so better, so went on to explain. "Sorry, I didn't come here to complain about my job, or play the poor-me card. It's just been a rough week."

Roger snorted at Harry's face as his hair was ruffled. "Sorry mate, something about your hair makes me want to just muss it." He smiled in what he knew was an extremely winning fashion, just to make sure there were no hard feelings. "Apparently she was great-grandfather's favourite child, and he wanted her to inherit the family business so to speak. She ran off and married my grandfather instead, it was quite scandalous apparently."

He laughed. "I suppose you have, and believe me. You're not boring me or playing the poor-me card. But if you want to talk about something else we can? How's your godson?"
