Pureblood Spectrum
Who: Greg and Richard
What: Opposite ends of the pureblood spectrum interacting
Where: Finnigan's
When: Tuesday 25th August, evening
Rating: SFW unless I update

"No," Greg said, frowning at Seamus who'd tried to convince him to have some kind of fig-rum cocktail. It was pink, and Greg didn't like figs anyway, as far as he knew. "I just want a beer." Greg had already eaten, and changed out of his hideous work robes, and then found he had nothing particular to do with his evening. He'd sent Von over to Marcus with some leftovers, then walked the short distance to Finnigan's. There was no Quidditch on tonight, and the sign at the bar alerted Greg to the fact that the pub quiz would be starting at eight. He didn't mind that, though he obviously wouldn't be participating himself. He might well have left by then if someone didn't turn up to talk to - he had beer at home, and it was cheaper, but one of Mrs McHavelock's cats had gotten loose and was driving Greg insane with its scratching at his door.

"Okay, there you go," Seamus said, returning with Greg's beer and taking the money from him with a nod. Greg looked around the Common Room, but there were no free tables that he could see, so he moved a little way along the bar to a free stool. "Anyone sitting here?" he asked.

Rich took a healthy swallow of his black and tan. "If it doesn't work out, look me up. There are usually an assortment of positions open around the office, even quite a few that don't involve piles of paperwork." He shrugged. " But we're wizards. Paris is just as close as walking to the other side of the pub. Unless I have to go the muggle way, it's not like it's really travel."

He nodded. "Never did get along that well with the twins back during my school days. Something about practical jokes and bad smells, if I remember correctly. Caught sight of you working over at the Works the other day. My sympathies. "

Slowly, Greg nodded. He couldn't imagine himself working in an office, paperwork or not, and nor would his mother approve after her instructions to find something on Monument or Diagon Alley. It was good to keep his options open, though. "But then you get there," he said, "and you don't have your house, or your friends, or your food. Everything's different." Some people would say that was the very appeal of travelling, but Greg was not one of those people. "I like knowing how things are going to be when I get home."

Almost surprised by the commiserations, Greg gave a slight smile. He wasn't used to people agreeing with him about his working conditions, unless they were friends he was close with or Slytherins. "I was glad when they left," he agreed. "Gryffindor had to get new Beaters and they were bad."

"It's only different for a little while." Rich made a quick back and forth movement with his free hand. "You make a few friends, they tell you the good places to eat, you make more friends, learn where things are. Couple of days, maybe a week, you start to feel at home. Suppose it helps I race brooms. Always easy enough to track down another racer for the inside scoop. Still, same thing every day would get boring in a hurry for me. Why I like my job despite the paperwork."

He frowned briefly. "You ought to talk to Dora Montgomery. Not all the jobs with International Exports involve much paperwork or time in the office. Busy as she's been with the whole dueling competition thing, I've been running without backup a lot lately when I deal with some of the more sketchy people in the trade. You're big enough to be intimidating. Even if you're no good in a fight, eyes would be on you and not me. Might work. Talk to Dora, like I said. Pay is pretty good for hired guns, and the trips are usually out and back same day."

"You ready for that black and tan yet?"
