Pureblood Spectrum
Who: Greg and Richard
What: Opposite ends of the pureblood spectrum interacting
Where: Finnigan's
When: Tuesday 25th August, evening
Rating: SFW unless I update

"No," Greg said, frowning at Seamus who'd tried to convince him to have some kind of fig-rum cocktail. It was pink, and Greg didn't like figs anyway, as far as he knew. "I just want a beer." Greg had already eaten, and changed out of his hideous work robes, and then found he had nothing particular to do with his evening. He'd sent Von over to Marcus with some leftovers, then walked the short distance to Finnigan's. There was no Quidditch on tonight, and the sign at the bar alerted Greg to the fact that the pub quiz would be starting at eight. He didn't mind that, though he obviously wouldn't be participating himself. He might well have left by then if someone didn't turn up to talk to - he had beer at home, and it was cheaper, but one of Mrs McHavelock's cats had gotten loose and was driving Greg insane with its scratching at his door.

"Okay, there you go," Seamus said, returning with Greg's beer and taking the money from him with a nod. Greg looked around the Common Room, but there were no free tables that he could see, so he moved a little way along the bar to a free stool. "Anyone sitting here?" he asked.

"Help yourself," Rich nodded at the bar stool. "Nobody else has nabbed it yet."

Office then Paris on Monday. A day wrangling paperwork Tuesday. Rich hadn't felt like going home to an empty flat, so he was at the pub to nurse a black and tan or two and contemplate the pub grub. Like that girl with the shepherd's pie, if he cooked for himself he'd have to face leftovers. And the silence that even a good sound system couldn't fill. People would probably come in for quiz night. That might be fun to watch. Less mind rot than the telly, too.

Mils was off on her own projects these days. Training with Dora had gone from free-form brawling to formal dueling. Not much room for conversation there. He was either going to have to develop another protoge, or thing seriously about slowing down a little and trying to find a life.

"Lot of people seem to have come in for the pub quiz tonight. I'm more the spectator sort. What about you?"

He vaguely recognized the other man from school and various pureblood functions here and there. The name would come to him in a moment.

Greg set his beer down on the bar before taking the stool. He hadn't really intended to talk, but his neighbour did look faintly familiar, even if he wasn't someone Greg knew well enough to recognise by sight. "Yeah," he agreed with a shrug. "I don't usually pay much attention." The idea of free drinks appealed, certainly, but Greg knew he hadn't a hope of winning unless he could convince Pansy or Draco to come play with him - and they both made enough not to worry about it.

He sipped his beer, glancing at the glass in front of Rich. "What are you drinking?" It looked like beer, and was in a pint glass, but it was two different colours. Greg had an idea that he'd seen it before, and that it had been called 'half and half' by Seamus - but that hadn't helped him work out what it actually was, and he wasn't inclined to ask Seamus or anyone else on the staff to explain.

"It's noise and people, " Rich replied with a brief shrug. "Today was a mountain if paperwork in the office. Goes with the job but doesn't mean I like it."

Goyle was his name, that was it. Greg. Not the pudge he'd been in school, either. Had an inch or so on him, and maybe a stone or three too. Hard to tell, but the man did look solid. Rich was a firm believer in the old adage, "Be polite to everybody, but have a plan to kill them instantly if the need arises." He'd never managed to put the wartime paranoia to rest, and this was a Slytherin of suspect past if he remembered correctly.

"Half and half, or a black and tan if you want the less politically correct name. Lighter lager floated on a stout. Newcastle on Guineas in this case. Sweetens the dark but still has some substance. If you've a steady hand, you get both on one swallow without stirring them up beforehand. Suppose it's an acquired taste. Buy you one if you'd care to give it a try."

Greg gave a grunt of agreement. He was grateful he didn't have to do paperwork with the Weasleys - he doubted anyone would trust him with it. He listened to Rich's description of the drink, curious. Beer was his drink of preference, unless someone else was paying for good whisky, but he did find the dark beers a bit bitter. "Maybe when I've finished this," he said, gesturing to the glass he already had.

"What do you do?" he asked, still curious about other jobs that might be available to him. He was going about the job hunt in his own strange way, asking people when it occurred to him and doing absolutely nothing about it in his time off. He had the arrangement with Romilda now, but he was still waiting to see how that would fit into his life.

"Whatever," Rich nodded. "No worries."

"Oh, nothing that spectacular. I'm over at International Exports. More or less I find people with something to sell, somebody who wants to buy it, and somebody else who can move stuff from from seller to buyer. The fun part is bouncing around the globe to meet with customers, the down side is contracts in any of a dozen or so different languages. All evens out. You looking? Your housemate, Mils Bulstrode, came to work for me a while back. She's well on her way to buying a partnership these days."

Greg lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug. "I just got a new job, part-time," he said, keeping it vague. "I want to see how it goes." That was true enough. Greg wasn't an imaginative type and the best way for him to figure out whether he liked something was to experience it. He needed to give it some time to work out whether he wanted to keep going. "I like seeing Millicent's photos of the places she goes, but I don't really want to travel." He liked his routine too much.

"I don't think there is a fun part of my proper job." The one he was allowed to talk about, working with the Weasleys. "It's all awful."

Rich took a healthy swallow of his black and tan. "If it doesn't work out, look me up. There are usually an assortment of positions open around the office, even quite a few that don't involve piles of paperwork." He shrugged. " But we're wizards. Paris is just as close as walking to the other side of the pub. Unless I have to go the muggle way, it's not like it's really travel."

He nodded. "Never did get along that well with the twins back during my school days. Something about practical jokes and bad smells, if I remember correctly. Caught sight of you working over at the Works the other day. My sympathies. "

Slowly, Greg nodded. He couldn't imagine himself working in an office, paperwork or not, and nor would his mother approve after her instructions to find something on Monument or Diagon Alley. It was good to keep his options open, though. "But then you get there," he said, "and you don't have your house, or your friends, or your food. Everything's different." Some people would say that was the very appeal of travelling, but Greg was not one of those people. "I like knowing how things are going to be when I get home."

Almost surprised by the commiserations, Greg gave a slight smile. He wasn't used to people agreeing with him about his working conditions, unless they were friends he was close with or Slytherins. "I was glad when they left," he agreed. "Gryffindor had to get new Beaters and they were bad."

"It's only different for a little while." Rich made a quick back and forth movement with his free hand. "You make a few friends, they tell you the good places to eat, you make more friends, learn where things are. Couple of days, maybe a week, you start to feel at home. Suppose it helps I race brooms. Always easy enough to track down another racer for the inside scoop. Still, same thing every day would get boring in a hurry for me. Why I like my job despite the paperwork."

He frowned briefly. "You ought to talk to Dora Montgomery. Not all the jobs with International Exports involve much paperwork or time in the office. Busy as she's been with the whole dueling competition thing, I've been running without backup a lot lately when I deal with some of the more sketchy people in the trade. You're big enough to be intimidating. Even if you're no good in a fight, eyes would be on you and not me. Might work. Talk to Dora, like I said. Pay is pretty good for hired guns, and the trips are usually out and back same day."

"You ready for that black and tan yet?"
