RP: Alicia and Adrian
Who: Alicia and Adrian
What: It’s been a week. A week!
Where: Adrian’s flat, Monument Alley
When: Right after this
Rating: SFW

Seeing Oliver again was like an instant cheer pill and a solid rod to steel her off. He was so happy, so exuberant about it, that Alicia was still smiling when she left Finnigan’s, even if her tummy was feeling like a herd of elephants were galloping around.

She paused for a moment outside Adrian’s door, wondering if she should have changed out of her jeans and gone for a dress instead – the look on his face when he had seen her in the dress last Monday had given her the idea that he liked that dress – or maybe she shouldn’t have touched up her make-up before she had left, because… Alicia wiped her palms against her jeans, and knocked on the door.

Adrian made a grimace when she said she'd had dinner at Finnigan's. As much as he liked the place - and he did, even if Seamus made fun of him for his expensive taste in the best whiskey and bourbon at every open opportunity - he hated the food there, especially over the last couple of months. It just seemed to have gotten loads worse, if you asked him.

"And my manners are perfectly fine, yet again, thank you. You're the one wandering into someone else's flat," he countered with a smile. It was so good just to see her, to be in her presence. When she had sort-of, almost, seemed to want to hold his hand - over the dinner table, not in a 'we're walking down the street casually' sort of way - he'd thought maybe she be feeling the same as he had over the last few weeks. His lack of interest in one night stands, even only kissing the Auror, his whining on and on to Blaise... These were very odd behaviors all around for him, and he'd finally thought he'd figured it out. of course, how do you begin to tell your best friend - a widowed single mother of two children, at that?! - that you maybe might want to try for more.

When she kissed him on the cheek in greeting he gave her a smile but his heart wasn't in it, it wasn't the greeting that he'd hoped for, even if it was what he expected.

He nodded, using the moment to clear his thoughts, "Yeah, relaxed. Have some salves drying and herbs roasting, so there's not much to do besides sit around. I've been reading some of my dad's old journals again, though. He's got one from his grandfather - so my Great Grandfather, Mitchell - from the late 19th Century, pretty fascinating stuff, even if jut for the first person accounts," he relayed, clearly happy with the journal find from his tone of voice.

“Yeah,” Alicia agreed with Adrian’s grimace. The food had really taken a turn for the worse there, although tonight it hadn’t been too bad. Both she and Oliver could have easily afforded to go somewhere else, but it was Finnigan’s and even with the not-quite-up-to-par cuisine it was a down to earth and familiar place to visit.

“I knocked, and awaited permission,” she smiled at him, marvelling at the ease of seeing him again that was right there under all the jitter of everything she wanted to tell him, wanted to show him, wanted to share with him.

There was a blandness to Adrian’s smile that had Alicia stow any and all intentions of coming clean with him tonight back to the farthest part of her mind, where she had pulled them out from earlier. Of course, it didn’t matter how Adrian smiled, he would always be handsome to her, but this lack of something in his eyes made it clear to her that last Monday had been an anomaly, that the moments when he had held her gaze or the small touches and caresses hat had been snuck in here and there, had either been the exhilaration of a long day being successfully completed or more likely the wine playing trick on them.

There was nothing missing from his excitement about the old journal he had found, and almost instantly, Alicia felt that same enthusiasm infect her, even if the topic wasn’t one that actually interested her. “First person accounts? You mean like his diary?” she asked as she made herself comfortable on his sofa, genuinely interested in hearing more about what had caught his interest tonight.

Adrian nodded, "I always liked that about the library at Hogwarts actually, books going back over a thousand years."

He told her about his father's collection and the family journals, too. The Puceys had been working in potions as long back as... Well, probably as long as there had been Puceys.

He sighed and laughed at himself, "Sorry, I'm boring you to tears aren't I?" He shook his head and asked, "Wait, sorry, why did you want to stop by? Besides to hear me go on and on and ancient history, that is." It had just occurred to him that he had no idea why she'd come after her dinner.

“I’m a little ashamed to admit that I didn’t realise the value of that until seventh year,” Alicia admitted with a small smirk, though she didn’t elaborate on why that was. Back then, she and Adrian had been on opposing sides and not just on the Quidditch Pitch. The Inquisitorial Squad that he had been part of, had made it harder than she believed it ought to have been, to make up for the abysmal alternative to a proper education that Umbridge had set. Of course, that was what had sent her to the library where she had ended up with an unlikely study-buddy in Eddie, who had introduced her to some of the ancient books to fully understand the magic they were working with.

As a second generation Wizarding World inhabitant, Adrian’s long family history fascinated her. The fact that the same skills and professions had lasted through centuries was astounding. Even more so when she realised that while she didn’t have that, her children did. Of course, at this point it didn’t seem likely that either of them would go into the investment business, but still. More importantly, though, the excited look in Adrian’s eyes as he spoke and explained and the set of his lips when it made him smile was what truly made Alicia an interested listener, and she easily asked questions to have him elaborate on things she didn’t fully understand.

Alicia smiled at him and shook her head. “No, you’re not. It’s just a… you have a long family history,” she chuckled, then cleared her throat when he asked why she was there. For a second she considered telling him the truth; that though she knew it wasn’t his way, she felt more for him than just friendship, that he was the reason she was feeling like that again. But tonight had been good, and though she had felt confident when she had left Oliver, now just wasn’t the time, and she wasn’t sure there ever would be a time. “I was just in the area,” she told him instead, which wasn’t untrue either. “Wanted to make sure you were still alive.” It had been a week, after all.
