Paperwork & Lunch
Who: Zacharias and Lucy
What: Lunch after sorting paperwork
Where: Starting in the Ministry
When: Thursday 30th July, lunchtime
Rating: SFW

Zacharias had been incredibly helpful with showing Lucy the way to the right department and answering all her questions. There wasn't a lot they could do about the floo network yet, though Zacharias had shown Lucy where to go for next time, but they'd got all her apparition licence paperwork filled in and she was registered with a Ministry-approved tutor to start lessons in the next couple of weeks. It was certainly an enormous improvement on the last time she'd been in this building, though she still felt slightly uncomfortable facing down the Ministry officials - still not entirely certain she belonged.

"You were amazing," she said when they walked out of their last meeting, the relief of knowing the ordeal was over allowing her a genuine smile. "That was so much easier than I thought it was going to be." She paused, not sure where they were headed now and not wanting to accidentally walk into any area she shouldn't be. "Thank you for coming with me. It helped a lot. Do you still want to go for lunch?" Since Zacharias hadn't been able to make it to her birthday, she was keen to spend some time chatting about non-administrative things - but also aware that he might still be busy.

Zacharias didn't think he'd been amazing. He thought he'd just known how to navigate some aspects of the Ministry. He'd worked there long enough that some of it had to have rubbed off, right? Right. But instead of mentioning that, he merely shrugged a little and said, "thank you," to Lucy's comment about him being amazing, listening to her as she continued to speak. Subconsciously, he lead the way toward the lifts.

"You're welcome," he said when she thanked him. "We can still go for lunch," he added with a glance at his wristwatch just to double check. He'd tried to plan out approximately how long it'd take in the Department of Magical Transportation to know about how long he'd have for lunch. Regardless, he thought he had enough time for a quick bite at least. "Unless you've got to get back to work, of course." He didn't want to be rude and assume Lucy had more time than she might, after all. He understood about having an allotted amount of time, though for all he knew, she'd taken the entire day off. But he'd rather err on the side of caution in this instance.

"Excellent," Lucy said, noticing the way he checked his watch first. She'd been considering suggesting they go elsewhere for lunch, and let it be her treat, but if he was short on time she'd just save her gestures of gratitude for another time. "I told Rich I might be a bit longer than usual, and I'm well ahead with work."

Though she'd managed to find the cafeteria without meaning to last time she'd been here, she wasn't at all confident she could pull of the same feat twice. Instead, she gestured for Zacharias to go ahead of her. "Lead the way, if you would." Now that the business portion of the outing was over, she felt chatty. "How are you anyway, Zacharias? Ready any more interesting books lately?"

Zacharias nodded, not entirely sure what to say to Lucy being ahead with work. Obviously that was good, but he thought saying so might make him sound a bit like he was judging her job performance or something like that. Instead, he thought about saying something else to both acknowledge it and acknowledge lunch, but he was prevented from it by Lucy continuing to speak. Secretly, he was grateful. Small talk was not something he excelled at by any stretch of the imagination. Conversation in general wasn't always something he was good at, but small talk was further down the list.

"No, not too recently," he admitted as he pressed the button to call the lifts, realising he'd been leading the way without paying attention before she'd had to say anything. "Most of my reading has consisted of job-related things. Nothing worth getting into." Which was partially true. It wasn't worth getting into mostly because at some point he'd have to stop. He supposed it was a down side to working in the Department of Mysteries at times, though, to be fair, he mostly didn't want to talk about work with anyone outside of work to begin with. If he had, he supposed he would have attempted to get a job doing anything else.

"What about you? Anything new catch your fancy," he asked, holding the lift door open for her, secretly glad it was empty just then. He wasn't a fan of being squished into tight spaces with other people.

Lucy nodded her understanding. "Sounds like work's been busy for you," she observed. "Do you think it'll calm down soon?" She really didn't understand what Zacharias did at all, so she had no idea whether it was work that came in waves of busy and then calm, or how much control he had over the amount he took on. Presumably, he was allowed to talk about that - as long as he didn't give her any details of what the work actually was. Lucy doubted she'd be able to follow it if he did.

She stepped into the lift, leaning against the back wall as she tried to remember the last book she'd read. "I just finished a book about Anne Boleyn," she said. "A fictional account, definitely not something that stuck to historical fact. It was totally sensational - but I quite enjoyed it. Now my sister is trying to convince me to read some new thing about vampires... but it sounds ridiculous."

He nodded a little at her comment about it sounding like work had been busy for him. With various deadlines and projects, as well as a whole other batch of work for the Committee on Experimental Charms, sometimes he wondered how he managed to find time to sleep without a Time Turner. "I'm not sure," he answered honestly. "I think so, but I'm not sure at the moment. I guess it depends on how some things go." Which was true. Vague, but true. If things fell into place, then he thought he'd have more free time than he currently had. If not, well, he supposed he'd be working late.

Once inside the lift, Zacharias pressed the floor button the cafeteria was on. Zacharias listened as Lucy spoke, and part of him thought these books were possibly Muggle. He assumed so, at least. Especially if her sister were trying to get her to read one about vampires since, if he were remembering right, she was a Muggle. Sometimes he liked historically based books, but other times he wasn't that into them. Still, he asked, "What's the Anne Boleyn book called?"

"Well, I hope they do," Lucy said as the lift start to move. "Stacey says you've been working too much." A smile played around Lucy's mouth as she remembered the conversation in question. It had been so good to see Stacey and Megan together again, like being back at school - but better. "Do you enjoy it, though? I know you can't talk about it much."

Lucy hesitated for a moment at his question, trying to call the book cover to mind. "Oh, The Other Boleyn Girl," she recalled. "I suppose it's supposed to be more about Anne's sister - but it's about both, really." Lucy's Tudor history was sketchy at best, she'd covered it a little in primary school and she could remember the order of Henry VIII's wives, but had no idea whether Anne Boleyn even had a sister. "There are more coming out, or maybe they're already out. I don't remember." The arrived at the right floor, and Lucy let Zacharias precede her out of the lift with a laugh. "How nice to arrive the proper way this time," she said. "I crashed into someone on the stairs last time I was here."
