Entry tags:character: rolf scamander, character: rose zeller

RP: A mighty sulk
Who: Rolf and Rose

What: Family drama and commiseration

Where: Rolf’s grandparents’ place and then his place

When: Wednesday July 29

Rating: Possibly NSFW (probably for language)

Rolf had spent a good portion of his morning running errands for his grandparents, particularly his grandfather. He’d picked up a bunch of papers from the solicitors – business stuff – and was back at his grandparents’ residence to drop them off. Some things shouldn’t depend on owl, and his grandfather was rather old anymore, and so he’d wanted to save the old man the trouble.

He was passing his grandmother’s parlor when he heard a familiar voice with the familiar back echo that meant it was coming from the fireplace. His feet stopped him in place, without his command, and he found himself hovering out of sight just outside the parlor door.

“Oui, I’m arriving tomorrow, and the party will be the next day,” his mother said through the Floo.

There was a slight pause and then his grandmother spoke. “Have you told Rolf you’re going to be in town? You know his birthday was the other day,” she said.

“Was it? No, I think I won’t tell him. I’m leaving the next day, there will be no time.” Her voice was breezy and throwaway, as if it didn’t matter.

It shouldn’t have mattered to Rolf, after all of these years. His mother had never been particularly close with him. His eldest sister had mothered him for many years. His sisters had all garnered more attention than he, though he’d never understood why. He’d only been a bit closer to his father.

But it did matter, despite being used to it, and his heart clenched painfully in his chest.

“Are you sure, darling? I’m certain he’d love to hear from you,” Porpentina said. Kudos to grandmother, he thought abstractly. She did try on his behalf these days. Perhaps she always had and he hadn’t known. There was no real way to know, because he wasn’t abut to show himself to ask. He wasn’t a coward, but it wasn’t a conversation he was sure he could have, especially over Floo.

“Oui, perhaps some other time.”

Rolf turned and nearly ran straight into his grandfather, who had obviously heard just the tail end. “Rolf,” Newt started, reaching out to him.

“The papers are on your desk. Owl if you need me to deal with any of them,” he said somewhat stiffly, and carefully stepped around his grandfather to go to the Apparition point of the house and he popped home before anyone could stop him.

He’d been planning on going down to the shop, but now Rolf definitely wasn’t in the mood. In fact, for Rolf, he was quite surly, and he kicked his shoes off in an unusual show of mess and simply flopped himself down on the bed, wishing he’d never heard his mother was going to be in town and didn’t want to see him.

Rose bit her lip and swallowed down her growl all the while counting to ten while she reined her anger in. Ranting at Rolf wouldn’t do him any good, wouldn’t lessen his hurt or make it all more bearable for him. He already knew that she knew exactly what he felt like, so all she could really do – all she could really do that could maybe make a small difference – was… be here and comfort him.

“One day,” she said softly, her eyes on his as she scooted a little closer to him, “when you’re back in the field and I have my own team, we’ll go to a place like Skopelos.” Skopelos was the only place she had ever been vacationing, so while she had been to other amazingly beautiful places, they had all been for work, which made Skopelos the best example of an island paradise that she knew. “We’ll… set up a Floo so Sweet Nothings can send through anything we want, when we want. No parents. No grandparents. Just you and me.”

Rolf knew she was angry. He'd be just as fiercely angry on her behalf. But that she held it back was nice, in a way, and even more so the way she focused all of her attention on him. He relaxed a little more into her, into her tiny touches and warmth and the way she loved him without saying a word. One of his hands found its way to her hair, and stroked it with soft, tiny motions as his eyes held hers.

His lips turned up slightly as he listened to her, letting her words soak slowly into him. "Yes. And have our own little stretch of beach. And it will be all ours, no one else's." Just a place for them, to be them, to not worry about anyone else if only for a little while, for it was in their natures to think of others often. "Our own little hideaway."

Rose’s face softened as she saw the slight change on Rolf’s lips, even more so as he started talking, joining her in her dreaming. “We’ll have a house right there on the beach,” she said, her smile now more dreamy. “No, two. Or a house and a hut for when we invite anybody to visit us.” Because even if they were fantasizing about disappearing from the world, she couldn’t imagine ever being without Dennis.

Gently pushing him until he was on his back, Rose slipped up until she was laying on top of him, just looking down into his eyes as her fingers combed slowly through his hair. “I’m sorry your parents are such arsehats,” she said quietly.

Rolf nodded. They wouldn't be able to leave out Dennis, of course. Not for long. And it was good to have people over, as well. "Yes. Must have a place for visitors," he agreed, hand carding up into her hair as he relaxed by small degrees. "With the run of the beach for Ant and Bast."

He sighed, a long sound, as she rolled him to his back, and his head tilted into her touches. It was incredibly soothing, and it felt good to have her fingers against his scalp. His hands raised to gently tuck her hair back as well, his eyes roving her lovely face and doing much in itself to make him feel better. "Thanks, love," he murmured. It didn't usually bother him, it was part of life, but it had taken him off guard. "Our parents just fail at life."
