RP: Happy birthday to me
Who: Cormac & Lavender
What: Mac has Lavender over for a birthday dinner
Where: Monument Alley; Mac's flat
When: 23rd, July, evening
Rating: NSFW possible (knowing these two)

Mac had ordered take away from Finnigan's. He'd been thinking a lot of this dinner with Lavender over the last week and had joined his parents for dinner earlier in the week to tell them of his plan.

The War hadn't affected his family much - he'd taken part in the final battle out of House pride, but otherwise his Pureblood status, his family's money, and his father's smart thinking had kept them all out of anything too scathing. Had Voldemort won, the McLaggen's had even been pretty confident their status in society wouldn't have been much changed - with the exception of Cho being half-muggle born.

But the bombings of two weeks earlier had shaken him. He'd felt helpless. Not only would his status do nothing in a muggle terrorist war, but he knew now that Lavender would be in the line of anything happening out there, and there was nothing he could do to protect her. He'd felt, in the last two weeks, his mortality, and her own. And so when he'd seen his parents, he'd asked their permission for a very important life. His father had given a confused but proud look and his mother had cried, claiming she never thought she'd see the day, but then she'd offered him a family heirloom of the McLaggen's - a ring his father had given her when they'd found out she was pregnant. It was beautiful, a garnet (very Gryffinfor, he'd commented) laid in gold, small and delicate and yet shining with strength and a lovely timeliness. It was perfect, he knew, and it was now in his pocket.

So now he wore his favorite suit coat and set out dishes and his 'good' wine glasses and had a bottle of light red wine chilling to go with the rare steaks he'd gotten from the pub. There were candles lit around the flat, which he'd had a witch in to clean and tidy that morning. He hoped she liked it there, he planned for them to share it, if tonight went well.

Now, all there was left to do was to wait.

Lavender hadn't pushed for Mac to make plans for his birthday, but she was glad when he'd invited her to dinner, especially as she probably would have just turned up anyway bearing cake. As it happened, she had made cake to bring with her tonight anyway and she had even made it using the amazing mixer that Cormac had given her for her own birthday a couple of months ago.

Getting ready to leave the flat hadn't gone quite as smoothly as Lavender would have liked, though. She'd set her mind on wearing one dress in particular, and she had all but emptied her wardrobe looking for it before she realised that it must be at Cormac's already. This was becoming an increasingly common problem for her as more and more of her clothes migrated over there. She'd finally settled on another one, only running a little bit late.

Scooping up the box with the cake in, Lavender Apparated to Cormac's flat, the wards letting her pass with no problem. "Mac? Happy birthday, gorgeous."

Cormac heard the pop of Lavender's apparation and smiled, meeting her as she greeted him. "All the happier for spending it with you," he said, leaning down to kiss her as the butterflies went mad in his stomach. He'd told himself he would wait until after dinner but his nerves were suddenly getting the best of him and he worried he wouldn't be able to touch a bite until he'd at least asked. Even if she said no - which, come on, he figured she would, less than a year into this and with his reputation and the recent events and all - he'd know and have gotten it out there.

His hands went to her hair as he deepened the kiss for just a moment before breaking away to take the box from her hands. "And what's this?" He asked, a knowing, sneaky smile on his face.

He set the box in the kitchen, leading her to follow him, and then poured them each a glass of wine and lifted his to toast her. "Lavender, there's something I want to talk to you about." His mood changed quickly from playful to serious.

Lavender squeaked slightly, trying to find the best angle to kiss him without squashing the birthday cake. She wasn't about to let her good work - and, more importantly, good chocolate - go to waste. As Cormac took it from her, she pouted playfully. "A little something sweet for my sweet," she teased.

Glass of wine in hand, she was about to clink hers against his when Cormac's serious face appeared. It was one she didn't see very often, and one she wasn't particularly keen to see on his birthday of all days. Lavender frowned, suddenly concerned. "What's the matter?"

Cormac shook his head and set his wine glass down, his look turning to concern. "Nothing's the matter, not really," he sighed, hoping she wouldn't think there was something wrong with what he wanted to ask, even if she said no.

He smiled a little bit and reached out for her, setting her glass down as well and pulling her into his arms, using one free hand to reach into his pocket before sitting down at the kitchen table and pulling her onto his lap with a little bit more levity. His heart beat wildly and roared in his ears. He swallowed and smiled nervously. "I've been thinking, is all, and well," he held up the ring for her to see, his arms around her. "I know we haven't even been a year yet but... the way I've felt this month, and the way I've loved you, well, let's be honest even since you let me kiss you at the pub..." He wasn't getting it out right and he knew it. He turned her to him in his lap - grateful yet again for their difference in stature - and looked her in the eye. "Lavender, I never thought I would meet anyone who makes me feel the way you do, I never thought I would meet anyone who held my attention so completely and who didn't take my shite and who loved me - really loved me - even so. But I did. And it's you. And I've told you you're stuck with me and I hope you might like to make that more... official. Lavender, will you marry me?" It was only then, with the question out, that he let himself exhale and his gaze went to her lips instead of her eyes, afraid of what he might see in them.

When Cormac pulled her onto his lap, Lavender couldn't help but laugh. She thought she'd narrowed it down to either something wrong with the shop or one of those nasty rumours about the Prides' top Chaser being lured away to play for a team in Canada or Italy. Yet pinning down the reason for Cormac's sudden concern was harder than she'd first anticipated if he also wanted to cuddle.

The sight of the ring made her brown eyes grow wide. Oh, Merlin. As he talked, Lavender's fingers reached to toy with the hair at his nape as easily as they would play with her own hair when she was nervous. When he finally asked that question, she accidentally yanked his hair in surprised. "Oh, fuck, sorry," she apologised, cheeks quickly flushing red. That wasn't the first thing she was supposed to say when her boyfriend proposed.

"It's a good thing you took my wine. I think I might have dropped it." That wasn't what she was supposed to say either. Lavender clapped her hand to her mouth, though that did nothing to stifle the nervous giggle that escaped her.

She exhaled. "I don't know which of us is crazier. You for asking." Her fingers skimmed his jaw. "Or me or saying yes."
