I always knew this day would come, but I had hoped I had a least a few more years before it happened. I've been outwitted by my daughter. ~~Her mother is laughing at me from the afterlife, I'm sure.~~

Apparently we now have a cat.

I'm not entirely sure, to be completely honest. It was cowering under a bush near the back door last night, covered in dirt and shivering, so I brought it in to clean it up and feed it something, and I was going to take it to a shelter this morning. The woman next door said she's seen it around for a week or so, and it doesn't seem to have an owner.

Sophie has since given it name and declared that it doesn't need to find another home because it can have a home with us. I inevitably lost the debate about whether or not it can stay. ~~It makes her happy, so it can't be that bad, I guess.~~

I've never had a cat before, so I'm not clear on what to do with it, or what exactly it's going to need though.

You are a cat rescuer. What did she name it?

Cat box with cat litter. Cat food. Water. A scratching post or two. Some toys to see what it likes. A lot of cats seem to like the cat toys on the sticks like toy mice on a stick or feathers. Make it Sophie's job to play with the cat every day so it doesn't get bored. Cat treats are good, too. And love. Lots of love. That fits the cat's personality. Some don't like being held while others enjoy nothing more than curling up in laps and purring and shedding.

Cats need a lot to get started, and they also need to be checked to make sure they don't have any health issues, but I think they're pretty easy to maintain as pets once you get all the basics. I had a cat, and ~~I am so sorry if any of this was my fault because I might have mentioned having one to Sophie and wanting a pet~~ she was pretty easy once everything was obtained. Just feed, clean the litter box, play with, love, and no walks involved. Probably a good first pet for a kid in order to teach them about animals and responsibilities since Sophie can do a lot of the playing with the cat, can help out with feeding and giving the cat water, and giving the cat lots of love based on her winning the great cat debate already.

Maybe. There are some things I just don't question, and it looks like this is one of those times.

Right - trip to the store and the vet. And Sophie definitely has the playing and loving things down already, she's barely let him out of her sight all day.
