Birthday Bash
Who: Seamus and open for multiple threads
What: Seamus's birthday
Where: The Roost
When: Saturday 27th / Sunday 28th June [foredated]
Rating: SFW for now?

Seamus had debated over the theme of his birthday for hours. He'd known that he wanted ice cream, but none of his own decor ideas had been inspiring. Dominic had suggested a camping theme, which Seamus had been enthusiastic about for all of ten seconds before realising how much Dean would hate it. Eventually, he'd settled on a sort of park feel. Where better to eat ice cream, after all?

One wall held the table, magically chilled, with all the flavours of ice cream, the cones and the cups, the sprinkles and sauces. Dominic had fashioned wooden screens that looked like muggle ice cream vans to attach to it, and all four walls were grass-green and sky-blue. The rest of the room was slightly too-crowded with park amusements. A see-saw, a set of swings, a family-size swing, even a sandbox in a nod to Dean's last birthday. The ground didn't quite feel like real grass but it was close enough, and the air smelled like summer.

Come midnight, the larger accessories would disappear, leaving the room empty for people to spread blankets and sleeping bags and cushions over. Seamus was expecting at least his closest friends to stay the night.

When Dennis arrived and headed up towards the roost, he found the place quiet. Obviously this meant that either he was even earlier than he'd intended to be, or else falling in line with how the rest of his week had gone, he'd open the door to find at least two people engaged in something deeply unsettling and tantric. He paused and considered this for a moment, before continuing up the stairs - it was probably only Seamus and Dominic there, and they seemed rather infinitely unlikely to be engaging in something sexual.

He started slightly at the sound of Seamus' voice, then grinned, hurrying up the last few steps and into the utterly dazzling scene. "Hi- wow, wow," he said, spinning around to drink in the room before turning back to Seamus and pulling him into a crushing hug. "Happy Birthday for yesterday," he crowed, thrusting a box at the other man. "How are you?"

"Cub!" Seamus replied, wrapping his arms around Dennis and squeezing back just as hard. They made sure to see one another as much as they could, but the visits lately had been fleeting and Seamus didn't really have any idea what his friend and quasi-little-brother was up to. Victis Honor probably hadn't helped - Seamus knew how hard that day could hit. "Don't 'wow' at me, save it for Dominic. He should be back in a while." He took the present, barely holding himself back from giving it a good shake to see if it rattled.

He tugged Dennis over to the ice-cream table, curious to see what he'd make given free choice. "Make ice cream while I open this," he said, fingers already searching for the weak spot in the wrapping paper. "I can open it now, right? It was my birthday yesterday, so..."

Dennis grinned and laughed as the other man engulfed him a warm hug. He hadn't really seen Seamus much over the last few weeks, which made sense as he'd barely been in the country over the last few months. He vaguely remembered that they'd spoken briefly on Victis Honor Day, but then his memories were always hazy after the bout of self-medicated alcoholism he engaged in to get through that day so couldn't really remember. "Oh I will, trust me I will show him the fullness of my appreciation- wait that went somewhere a lot more pornographic than I intended?"

He allowed himself to be tugged over to the ice cream and found his eyes widen in surprise. "Oh god, is that cookies and cream? Oooh and raspberry swirl, and hokey pokey you got icecream from New Zealand I am so impressed right now!" He turned and grinned at Seamus and nodded. "'Course you can, it's for you after all!" He then focused back on creating himself a towering icecream cone containing chocolate fudge, cookies and cream, and salted caramel crunch, before turning back to see if Seamus would like the eternally sharp knife, the magically extended Hakone Zaiku box, and the Boab nut carving.

Seamus raised an eyebrow and then his face squirmed into an exaggerated expression of disgust. "Eeew," he cried. "No! You're like my brother! And Dominic's like my step-brother, or something. Stop it! If you two ever hook up - or have ever hooked up, I demand not to know about it!" He stuck his tongue out and added another "Gross" for good measure.

He watched as Dennis fawned over the ice cream, grinning. "Did I?" he asked, genuinely ignorant of the geographic origins of his various ice cream choices. "I just picked out what I liked from Florian's and Honeydukes." Distracted from his presents, he bumped his hip against Dennis's as he moved closer to the table. "Look at the sprinkles! Some of them are flavoured." He gestured to the brown chocolate flavoured ones.

Satisfied that Dennis was capable of making his own ice cream, he returned his attention to ripping the wrapping paper and screwing it into a ball. "Wow!" he exclaimed, shifting a bowl of shamrock sprinkles to make room. "I have no idea what I'm going to do with any of them, but they're great! Thanks, Dennis."

Dennis gave an exaggerated eye roll and poked Seamus in the hip. "It's not like I accidentally implied wanting to sleep with you numbskull - which let me hasten to say: yick!" He lifted his chin and shook his slightly shaggy hair out of his eyes. "Besides, it's not like I've got men lining up for me anyway."

He snorted again and then continued creating his obscene monstrosity of wanton gluttony. "Well you have good taste when it comes from getting flavours from Florians and Honeydukes, though that's not surprising," he said, pinching Seamus' hip as he headed towards the sprinkles, which were in a similarly ridiculous quantity to the ice cream. "Well I've surprisingly not had chocolate sprinkles on ice cream before, which really I should be shot for, so why not!"

"Well, the knife," Dennis started around a mouthful of ice cream, "Never breaks and never dulls, so it's a good kitchen or general purpose knife. I picked it up for you in New Zealand. The box, once you set it to your magical signature, will only open for you," he took another mouthful of ice cream and closed his eyes happily. "Annnd the boab nut has a whole bunch of protective charms etched into it, so keep it in your flat." He moved forward and poked his friend in the side again. "So what've you been up to anyway?"

"It's still gross," Seamus insisted. "It'd be like if you wanted to sleep with Graeme. Which, before you say anything is never going to happen because the idea of two guys kissing freaks him out." Graeme had never actually said as much, but Seamus could just tell that he wasn't really comfortable about it. He'd even been really weird around Dean for a brief while before Seamus got it into his thick head that they were friends and nothing more.

Seamus tried to dodge his hip out of the way of Dennis's grasping, prodding fingers, but didn't quite manage it. He tugged his t-shirt down a little, afraid even now of another moment where someone might spot the scar who hadn't seen it before. "Stop poking me!" he complained, making it sound light-hearted, even though he really would prefer that Dennis stop.

"A general purpose knife," he echoed, raising both eyebrows at Dennis. "How many tasks per day do you feel like I need a knife for?" Honestly, Seamus mostly used magic for cutting in the kitchen. It was neater and easier to clean up after. He still appreciated the present, though, even if it would likely end up as more of a decorative piece than functional. "Oh!" he added, thinking about the box. "I can put the Battlescars journal in it between meetings. Brilliant."

He made a vague gesture in response to Dennis's question. "The usual. But tell me about you, you've been all over the place."

Dennis wrinkled his nose and pointed at Seamus accusingly. "Are you telling me you have a homophobic employee, or is he just a bit weird about things he doesn't understand? I can handle the latter, but not the former."

He noticed Seamus pull at his shirt in a slightly self-conscious manner, and suddenly felt like the world's biggest twat. He was so used to poking at his team as part of their weird banter, that he'd done it automatically without really considering the very obvious reason why Seamus wouldn't like it. "Sorry dear," he said, lifting his hands placatingly. "I've got into a habit of poking and be poked at my team and completely forgot that it's not a normal thing."

"Well I don't know," he snorted. "I always find it useful to carry a knife with me - though admittedly I find myself in situations where using magic would get me thrown in a cell somewhere for violating international magical law in front of muggles so..." He grinned at his friends' appreciation for the box. "I thought you'd like something like that! I have one at home that has a vanishing spell. I gave linked boxes to my parents, Trish, Helen, and Tom so I can send them letters more quickly when I'm travelling."

He rolled his eyes, and suppressed the urge to poke Seamus again. "Oh ye king of specificity! What ever have I done without you?" He sat down with his ice cream and took his time eating a few bites before answering. "Well I spent about a month in Mongolia, China, Japan, and the Koreas doing a piece on the new cooperative agreements between the four countries' Ministries to try and improve magical and muggle human rights and stem the tide of human trafficking by dark wizards, so that was exciting and exhausting. Then I covered the Australian magical elections, which was bizarre to watch as an outsider, and next I'm off to Mexico to do a couple of essays on the Aztec and Maya groups which have come out of hiding, and test to see if there's any Inca descendants down in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile."

Seamus raised an eyebrow. "I have a brother who... well. He hasn't stopped talking to me or anything, but I think he'd rather not have to see me kissing anyone." It was one of the few things he and Graeme didn't talk about - beyond, obviously, when Seamus had come out. His friendship group was quite macho and laddish and Seamus knew a lot of them were outwardly homophobic. Graeme wasn't quite that bad, but nor was he completely comfortable with it as his mam had been. Seamus put on a grin. "Frankly, I don't want to see him with his tongue down the through of some girl either, so fair's fair." He loved his brother - so much so that he never bothered to remember they were only half-related - and wasn't going to hear a word against him.

"Your team?" Seamus teased, waggling his eyebrows at Dennis. "Bigshot journalist has a team now, does he?" He grinned, more honestly. He truly was happy for Dennis. "And excuse me, why can't you send me letters more quickly while you're travelling? I thought I was honorary family. Not that I'd write back, I suppose..." He wasn't really offended - he just liked teasing Dennis. That was what big brothers did, right?

He listened eagerly as Dennis recounted his exploits, sitting down in the grass beside him, fingers tugging at the short strands. "And after that you're going to come back to England and have a nice rest where we can all actually get at you, yeah?" Seamus asked as he jabbed one foot towards Dennis's calf. "Otherwise I will have to start worrying about you overworking yourself - and I learned from my mam and Susan, so you really don't want to mess with me on that front."

Dennis waved away the specification. "Fine fine, but homophobia - and biphobia, transphobia, and all - are definitely poor character traits in my extremely biased opinion," he sniffed, attempting to shove his burning sense of social justice back into it's box before he pissed Seamus off about his brother. "I guess that's fair then," hoping that they could drop the subject.

He rolled his eyes and booped Seamus on the nose. "Bigshot journalist has a team with a photographer, and an assistant, and sort of half-guide half-jack-of-all-trades, which is quite nice. Plus half the time we seem to be joined by a cursebreaker or two because the whole lot of them seem to have taking a liking to me? Makes the whole experience less mind-shatteringly lonely." He snorted and jabbed his ice cream accusingly at his friend. "We both know that's exactly the reason I don't write to you more often, I'd never get a reply now would I?"

"Hmmm..." he said with a Gallic shrug. "Maybe not England, but my editor has some assignments for me in Europe and North Africa, which mean I'll be able to be home a bit more possibly? At least for ten minutes a month maybe?" He rolled his eyes and focused on his ice cream for a few moments. "You can worry all you like, I'm not going to slow down. You slow down and they catch up with you. Besides, Susan corners me on a regular basis to worry at me, so there's really no need for you to do it too."

Seamus decided to let the topic drop as gracefully as possible, which mostly meant ignoring it completely and trying to sneak a chocolate sprinkle that was dripping down Dennis's cone. He managed to catch it with his finger and popped it into his mouth with a triumphantly satisfied sort of hum.

He frowned, though, not liking the idea of Dennis being lonely. "If you're not happy doing it, why don't you ask for a more local assignment?" he asked. "I thought you wanted to travel and stuff?" He supposed he could understand wanting something and then finding it didn't live up to your expectations, but he didn't want Dennis to feel like he was stuck with it now he had it. "Or you could take your journal and write about stuff there. Then I'd see it and other people would get to reply. Plus, it's instant. At least, I think it is. Dominic would know for sure."

At Dennis's last words, Seamus frowned even more. There was something behind the words... a dissatisfaction with life, or at least that's what it sounded like to Seamus. And he wanted to fix it - but he didn't really know how. "More than ten minutes," he insisted. "We need our cub to spoil." He really needed to have some kind of Gryffindor gathering like he'd been talking to Dean about. They'd been scattered too much by life lately.
