Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: dean thomas, character: seamus finnigan, delivery: dean thomas, delivery: seamus finnigan, status: complete

Delivery: Birthday Gifts
Who: Dean and Seamus
What: Birthday presents and breakfast
Where: Seamus' flat
When: Friday 26th June
Rating: SFW

All the presents are wrapped in home-made shamrock-print paper and have individual notes as well as a birthday card sitting on the top of them.

The photo in the frame is one of them taken on Victis Honor Day, both with their faces painted (Dean is a phoenix, Seamus has his face contour-mapped in green and purple). They're mostly smiling, occasionally one of them will poke the other in the side which will make them laugh. Once in a while Dean's face will soften and he'll glance at Seamus with something that hints at more than friendship, but only when photo-Seamus is looking away. The note stuck to the outside says 'We're managing good times even on dark days. Let's remember the feeling.'

The note stuck to this one says 'Something to keep your hands busy, and potentially annoy everyone!'

The note says If you need a board to stick them to let me know.

Thanks to his recent and rather spectacular drop in libido Dean had considered staying over the night before Seamus' birthday. He knew he was deeply unlikely to wake up in an unfortunate state. But Seamus was a late riser, and this way was more of a surprise. Well, small surprise. They almost always did something for the each other's birthday.

So Dean had been to work for an hour (with an alarm set) and then gone home and collected ingredients before apparating to Seamus' house, arriving as far from his bedroom as he could. He went to the kitchen and set about making up the potato farls he knew Seamus loved. Once they were ready for the pan he set bacon going, at the right moment he set put the farls in a frying pan to cook, adding eggs frying in the bacon pan as he flipped the farls. He was humming quietly to himself, tea was brewing, although whether that ended up being for Seamus or just for him remained to be seen.

When he judged it was all ready he split it between two plates (he'd had only a banana that morning on purpose) and went to wake Seamus. Well, assuming the smell of bacon hadn't already woken him.

Dean chuckled slightly at Seamus' proclamation of being a rockstar. Honestly if he was Dean would buy everything he made, but that was ridiculous. The drumming did actually look pretty cool though. The stick catching was even cooler though and his eyes widened in shock. He let out a little whoop of praise. "Niiice," he said, a grin of his own plastered across his face.

Seamus' compliment did things to Dean's insides. Those things were squishy and squirmy and made his heartbeat pick up in a slightly unfortunate manner. He wasn't sure why, Seamus had complimented his cooking plenty of times before. But to be compared to Seamus' mother? That was a very special sort of compliment. He covered up his attack of feelings by grabbing the brown sauce bottle and thrusting it at Seamus, with a "Thanks, man. Here," muttered in his direction. "I, er, made 'em from scratch," he admitted.

Seamus laughed, pushing his curls out of his eyes and dislodging the drumstick in the process. "I was going to try both..." He was glad he hadn't, though. He'd been not at all convinced about his ability to catch them both at once. Still, it wouldn't made Dean laugh either way, he supposed.

He took the brown sauce and applied it very carefully, scraping a little over each farl before topping them off with bacon. You could have too much of a good thing when it came to brown sauce, as he'd learned in childhood. He only smiled more at Dean's admission. "You're a... what's the word. Not masterpiece. Uhm..." Seamus chased the word around his brain for a few minutes before giving up. "Anyway, you're brilliant. Mam makes hers from scratch too, but da' uses the packet ones. He can make 'em come out right, but when I try... buttery stodgy ick." He made an exaggerated face. In truth, his attempts weren't all that bad - but nowhere near as good as Dean's results today.

The fact that the pen had been dislodged within a few seconds because Seamus couldn't sit still made him snort. "Yeah, but you can work out to that," he said. "Although Merlin only knows why I'm encouraging you to throw things into the air. I can only imagine you'll end up getting stabbed by your birthday present when you miss one time," he said.

"I'm a what?" he asked, curious, dumping a small pile of sauce on the side of his plate for dipping purposes when Seamus handed it back to him. Still, the compliments made him smile. "I may have practised the other night," he admitted. "The buttery stodgy thing definitely happened. That round didn't taste good," he said, making a 'icky' face. "Second lot were fine though so I remembered how at least." He wasn't going to point out that a lot of cooking knack came with practice and since he cooked a lot more than Seamus it was pretty likely that's why his attempts were better. Although that didn't always hold. He'd made farls before, again for Seamus, but it had been a little while. "Oh, and before you complain you didn't get them the other night it was last Thursday after I swam and you were at chess, and I didn't want to ruin the surprise."

"Maybe you want me to get stabbed by my birthday present," Seamus suggested. "It's a cruel plot! You want me injured and incapacitated so that you can -" Seamus stalled. He couldn't think of any way his being out of action could possibly benefit Dean. "Steal all my birthday presents?" he finished, uncertainly. "Eat all the ice cream? Ooh - inherit all my money!" Granted, that last wasn't terribly realistic. While Seamus might want what small capital he had to split between Dean and Dennis (mam and dad had enough, as did Susan) he'd never done anything to make it formal.

Seamus frowned harder, still trying to bring the word to mind. "Someone who makes masterpieces," he said. "Maestro? I don't know. There's a word and I can't think of it. What else is new?" It was a problem Seamus had often. Probably a result of absorbing new words like a Ravenclaw but never really cementing them in his vocabulary. He might hear something once and like the sound of it, then be utterly unable to recall it for use. He gave Dean an even bigger grin as he elaborated. "You practiced?" That Dean would go to that much effort for his birthday made something inside Seamus give way to squashy, tender feelings of his own and he shifted around in the bed until he could throw his arms around Dean's shoulders. "You're the best."

"Nooo," Dean said, drawing the word out and exaggerating his distress, one hand slapping against his chest. "Seriously though, I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself, but that's my own fault for thinking through your present to the inevitable conclusion where you throw them around," he said, genuine but slightly exasperated. The idea of Seamus dying made him feel sick, even if it was a joke. "No jokes about dying on your birthday though, please," he said quietly. It was really something he didn't want to think about. He shook himself down and moved on. "I'll take the ice cream though," he said. "Just in general."

He tilted his head, considering. "Artiste, maybe, but that sounds really bloody pretentious. Maestro makes me think of music more than art though, not sure why. I mean if we're going by people I know I'll go with dickhead, but that's just Cadmus," he said amused. Now that he'd said it aloud the fact he'd practised for Seamus' birthday treat did seem a little excessive, although the first attempt had definitely shown that it had been necessary. "Er, yeah," he admitted, mildly embarrassed. "I wanted to not fuck it up," he said, unable to help grinning when Seamus gave him a one-armed hug. "Of course I'm the best. Now eat up. I wanna see what you think of the rest," he said and moved to wolf down his own food.

Seamus wrinkled his nose in disgust at himself. "Yeah, no," he agreed. He could imagine how Dean felt - the same way he would, if Dean were to start joking about dying on his birthday or otherwise. "We already agreed, we are going to live to be old and grey and we'll tell stories about how we both made our fortunes in illegal thestral racing. They won't be true, but what is the point of being Irish if I can't tell tall tales?" He grinned, hoping his little sidetrack of ridiculous banter had done its job to distract Dean from bleaker thoughts.

He had to disentangle himself from Dean to finish eating, making thoroughly appreciative noises all the while, until his plate was clear and he was eyeing up the last little bit of farl on Dean's plate. Instead of asking whether or not Dean were going to finish, he turned his attention to the still-unopened presents. "Which one next?" he enquired. They were both squareish, which told him nothing useful.

At least Seamus managed to lighten the mood slightly and Dean snorted. He couldn't help but think that maybe they could just have that old and grey moment with the jobs they had now. It was a stupid fantasy though and he dismissed it. "Well, there have to be some perks aside from the Guinness drinking," he agreed. "Although I still think we should get Luna to discover something new and make our money from breeding it."

They both ate rather quickly, and Dean too made appreciative noises. It was his own cooking, but he could appreciate it too, and bacon was always worth the appreciation. He saw Seamus eye up his last bit of farl, but frankly he'd resisted the urge to eat any while he was cooking so he grabbed the last bit and shoved it in his mouth, realising his mistake when Seamus asked him a question.

He shrugged. He didn't really have a preference as such. Instead he snatched up both plates and cutlery and floated them onto the floor out of the range of feet when they got back out of the bed. "I mean, one's sort of silly, one's sort of serious, but I'm not telling you which so you've just gotta guess," he said, picking up his tea and taking a sip after putting his wand away again. Now that he'd eaten it had cooled down enough to drink without scalding himself.

"Ooh," Seamus said, nodding enthusiastically. "That's good too. Especially if it's a cute and cuddly something and not a clawing and biting and exploding something." Honestly, he didn't think anyone in their year would ever completely get over the blast-ended skrewts. Why did they exist and why, in Merlin's holy name, had anyone thought to teach a bunch of 13 year olds to handle them? "Maybe like a pygmy puff, or something."

He reached for the thinner of the two presents, huffing slightly. "And don't think I missed that crack against my country, Thomas. There are many perks to being an Irishman. The drinking and the accent are just the two most obvious." The words were obviously teasing and affectionate as Seamus tore into the wrapping paper. He'd opened it backwards, so all he saw at first was the back of the frame - but he quickly flipped it over and started grinning. "Brilliant!" he declared, poking Dean's smiling face through the glass, then nudging the node very carefully aside to examine his own face. "Aye," he began, sounding as if there were more to come - but he stopped, watching their photographed images poke and laugh and lean together. It wasn't the first picture he had of the two of them. He still had a box in his Hogwarts trunk somewhere of old photographs and bits of old essays. He'd let Dean rummage through it to make his comfort boxes, but he knew there was still plenty left.

"Big softy," he muttered, his cheeks going slightly pink - and it wasn't entirely clear whether he were talking about Dean or himself. "It's really great."

"If it's anything like a skrewt she's on her own," he said with feeling. "I mean, I'm all for cute and fluffy but I don't want to care for anything that's going to do more harm to me than your average slightly grumpy cat," he said, screwing his face up. "Pygmy puffs on the other hand I'm happy to look after." Sure at the moment he didn't even have an owl, but that was more of a consideration of money and his muggle address than not liking them.

Dean snickered quietly when Seamus protested about his Ireland jab. Honestly he loved the place and was very glad it had produced his best friend, but it was still easy to take a swipe at it. This was the part of Seamus' present he was least sure about, and when he was clearly delighted he breathed a silent sigh of relief. He didn't realise it but the soft, pleased smile that slowly spread across his face was similar to the look picture-Dean gave picture-Seamus in those stray moments he looked away.

"Yeah, well, it was a good moment in a ha- difficult day," he muttered in return, nudging Seamus slightly. No need to pre-start the jokes from the last present. "Glad you like it."

"So, umm, last one?" he suggested. He was suddenly unsure sitting in bed with Seamus was really the time to be encouraging lots of dick jokes, lowered libido or not. But it was his own fault so he couldn't complain really.
