Stupid Statue
Who: Greg and open!
What: Contemplation, conversation?
Where: The Monument, Monument Alley
When: Tuesday 23rd June, 2.10pm
Rating: SFW for now

Greg was supposed to be at work. He should have been back at work ten minutes ago, not standing mute in front of Monument Alley's monument. He'd been on his way back to Diagon Alley from Sweet Nothings when he'd stopped. Someone had left flowers at the phoenix's feet and the bright colour against the stone had caught Greg's eye. It was a stupid statue. Who picked a phoenix, famous for coming back 'from death' to represent all the people that would never come back? Vince and Greg's dad weren't going to suddenly appear from their graves.

It was even worse that it was Dumbeldore's symbol, Dumbledore's pet. Greg felt no loyalty to Voldemort, but he thought Vince had and he knew his dad had. They wouldn't want to be associated with Dumbledore's stupid bird. People like Finnigan and the Weasleys might talk about the phoenix representing the 'rebirth of the community' - but Greg didn't know many people who really believed that. He didn't know many people who felt like they were even accepted by this community. They tried, they worked where they were supposed to work and they'd stopped (mostly) talking about mudbloods and blood purity. Even so, the community preferred to forget about them.

He was so lost in unusually heavy thoughts that Greg didn't even notice someone stepping up beside him, whether it was to try to get his attention or to look more closely at the flowers.

Marietta had recently finished her shift at Flourish and Blotts and was going to do a little shopping before heading home. As she neared the monument she noticed a slightly familiar scowl on the face of the individual standing there. She didn't know what pulled her toward him, but she had been intrigued by their previous banter so she decided to take a chance at striking up a conversation.

"Well if it isn't Mr. Sourpuss from Weasley's," she said sarcasm mixed with adoration evident in her voice. It wasn't often she found someone who didn't like a Weasley. In fact, that quality alone made they young man standing beside her worth time in her book.

Greg turned at the voice, hand going instinctively to his wand - but he didn't draw it. He frowned at his new companion, trying to work out if she were making fun. It was only when she mentioned Weasley's that he was able to remember where - and when - he'd seen her before, though her name was escaping his recollection. He did, at least, remember that she was not a Weasley, or a Gryffindor.

Her words also reminded him that he'd been on his way to work, and he groaned. "Am I late?" Greg didn't wear a watch, and couldn't be trusted to remember to put a pocket watch in his pocket every morning. It was part of why he needed a house-elf to remind him about appointments and usher him out the door in time to get to them. Though, of course, having one that didn't talk made that interesting.

The fact that Goyle reached for his wand was not lost on her. She knew where her's was at all times but rarely put a hand on it unless there was imminent danger. She found it rather odd that in this time of peace that people were still jumpy. Of course, she knew what it was like to be ostracized but she had never believed that anyone would actually do her physical harm even if they did wish her ill.

"How would I know if you're running late?" she inquired honestly. "Though depending upon where it is you are headed you may wish to be early." It was a bit of odd logic but it made sense to her, there were some places one enjoyed being that were worth arriving early, some that you wanted to be there just in time, and others that weren't worth the worry and energy to get to on time if you were already behind the bar.

Greg gave Marietta's more consideration than most would probably have done, then shrugged. "You wouldn't." After a little more thought he added, "I guess I wasn't really talking to you. Just thinking out loud. Sorry." He did pull his wand out then, but pointed it away from her to cast a time-telling spell. He was late - a good quarter of an hour late. Pansy had once told him (actually, more than once) that if he was going to be late for something, it was better to be half an hour late than ten minutes because then he could pretend to have mistaken the meeting time. So there was no point hurrying off immediately.

"I'm supposed to be at work... soon," he said, the lie obvious. He'd never been very good at lying, he didn't think quickly enough for it. "I definitely don't want to be early."

Marietta simply nodded. It wasn't her place to pry into his personal life. She didn't know him well enough for anything more than a surface conversation. Though anything dealing with Weasleys, particularly those she'd been in school with, was something she could weigh in on. Luckily, in this case, there seemed to be a mutual disgust. "I can't say I'd want to head into work early either." She easily recalled his disgust at being asked to complete a task even though he'd been off the clock. "Particularly if my boss had already proven they had no boundaries when it came to my time."

Greg muttered something unflattering about George and Ron, but had the sense at least to keep it under his breath. He didn't want to get in trouble for wanting to hex both of them. He hadn't given in to temptation yet, but had come close a few times. "Where do you work?" he asked, more because it was polite than because he was especially interested.

"I work a few doors down at Flourish and Blotts," she stated deciding it was best to ignore whatever dialogue Goyle was having with himself. Sh herself had a habit of being displeased though she'd worked really hard at reeling in her feelings. "I should probably let you go," she added. Small talk wasn't necessarily one of her strong suits.

Greg made an obviously disapproving face. "That's not worse than working at Weasley's," he decided aloud. "But it's pretty bad." Greg - unsurprisingly - was not a fan of books at all and could imagine little that was more boring than working in a bookshop, except perhaps working in a school. That Marietta was a Ravenclaw had slipped his mind, and even if he'd remembered it wouldn't have occurred to him that she might think differently. But then she was offering to let him go and Greg nodded. "Yeah. I have to go work. Thanks."
