RP: Lunch
Who: Ron and Hermione
What: Books and lunch
Where: London
When: Friday (backdated)
Rating: SFW (unless Ron decides to get accidentally sweary)

Ron had checked himself thoroughly before leaving the shop, just to make sure there were no mystery stains on his clothes. It was a work hazard that had greatly improved his laundering skills over the past couple of months, though he still had a feeling that his mother didn't entirely trust him in that area; she tended to hover, waiting for an accident.

He felt a bit anxious about discussing his plans to buy a house, or maybe even build one, but those butterflies quietened down when he saw Hermione. Ron smiled, kissing her quickly in greeting. "Hey. Had a good morning?"

"No, but I think the scratch and spray thing might end up as some sort of colouring book type thing? I dunno. That might have been scratch and sniff. Anyway, it's a work in progress." Whether it would ever actually progress any further than an idea was another matter entirely.

Ever-pleased by the touch of Hermione's hand to his, Ron smiled. "I've got a couple of hours. Need to get back eventually, though."

No time like the present, Ron decided. Besides, what had been playing on his mind would likely need a lot of discussion. In this case, Hermione was a far better sounding board than one of his brothers or Harry. "So, you know I said that I'd been thinking? Well, I was thinking about... buying a house. Or maybe building one. I dunno. I wanted to see what you thought about it."

Hermione cringed internally at the idea of a scratch and spray coloring book put together by George. She honestly hoped that if they moved to do such a venture that he would reach out to an actual story teller and artist to help with the framework.

"I am all yours for the afternoon," she smiled as she stepped a little closer in as they walked. She enjoyed the closeness and was about to start yammering on about the book Ron had mentioned and how it paralleled others in her collection when he steered the topic in a direction she hadn't been expecting. Without thinking she stopped in her tracks.

"Oh," she stated after his words had been fully processed in her mind. Hermione had always believed she would be a part of that decision when the time came. At least, she'd thought that his house would eventually be her's as well and she wanted a say in it. This however took her by surprise as there was nothing to solidify that belief. At this point the house would simply be Ron's. "If you simply want out of the Burrow I'd look for something small since it's just you." How could she in good faith put her own twist on his home when she'd always wanted it to be theirs?

Ron frowned, mildly confused by Hermione's statement but largely oblivious, as was fairly normal for him. "Well, I wouldn't really be planning to move again if I could really help it. I dunno, I was thinking more like room for a couple of kids, maybe a library?" He'd always enjoyed the kitchen at the Burrow, too, and how it was really the centre of the home.

"That's why I'm kind of leaning towards building, y'know?" Ron continued. "So we could really personalise it."

Hermione knew with all her heart that eventually they would get married and to hear Ron clarify his thoughts on the house with the word we helped to solidify that knowledge. Still, she thought it was rather strange that he had obviously considered their future even if he'd not taken any of the steps that would make it more than a speculation.

"If you're going to build a house you'll have to procure land," she said. "Have you given any thought to where you'd want to live?" There was plenty of land around Ottery St. Catchpole that was undeveloped and she'd always wanted to have family close by not having grown up with much of her own.

"I've had a couple of ideas." Ron pulled his hand from hers, wrapping it around her waist to encourage her to keep walking. He didn't have all day to stand about on the street. Besides, he liked having his arm around her, always did. "Probably somewhere in the South West, but I wanted you to have a say. I mean... you're kind of my future. Even if you've never really shown an interest in leaving London." His ears had turned redder as he spoke, and he ducked his head to press a kiss to her temple.

"So I do get it if you're not interested in living with me one day. I know I'm not always the easiest to live with."

Hermione allowed Ron to slip his arm down around her waist so as to guide her. She knew that when it came to discussions she could become downright stubborn and want to focus and talk and Ron never had been one to be still for too long. When they finally got themselves figured out and started a family their children would definitely get their fill of both a verbal and kinesthetic.

"Someday," Hermione repeated his own sentiment back to him. There were certain things she was still holding onto tradition with even if those around her had thrown some of the old propriety to the wind. "Until then I have to trust that whatever decision you make will be for the better." She knew what she wanted to say but the last thing she wanted to do was start a fight in the middle of Diagon Alley.

"You... trust my decision." Ron was rubbish at hiding the confused and surprised expression that appeared on his face. "I'm not used to anyone telling me that." He was getting more used to recognising the feelings, though, the ones that had always gnawed at his self-esteem. He shook his head, pulling himself out of the sudden mental image of the mind Healer's office back at the Ministry.

"What's the matter?" he asked. "I thought you'd have more of an opinion."

Hermione looked at him in disbelief at his shock in her trust. After all they'd been through how could he even doubt that she would have trust in her. She knew she wasn't the most understanding at all times and her logic could get in the way of emotion and override her interactions from time to time. Still, she was taken aback by Ron's lack of belief that she had faith in him.

"What would you like me to say?" she asked. "You've been perfectly content to live with your parents for years and suddenly because your little sister has moved out of the house you decide you need to as well." She had hoped that his decision would be driven by other factors but that hadn't been the case.

At least as far as she knew. Ron still didn't open up to her as much as she'd like and if Hermione knew anything it was that assumptions with him were often off base. Did she push the issue here and now? The pro to bringing it up in public was the lack of a possible scene, the con was a complete clam up and ruining what she had wanted to be a promising afternoon. If she didn't take a risk now though she might lose the chance all together. "I'd simply hoped that when this discussion came up for us it was due to an entirely different reason."

Ron's footsteps fell heavier on the pavement now, strides a little longer. "Perfectly content?" he repeated crossly. "Have we got completely different memories of the last five or six years? Because I'm pretty sure I've been living at home so that I can save the galleons to buy a house instead of throwing it away on renting."

He exhaled. "I'll admit Ginny moving out kind of made the idea fresher in my mind, sure. That's why I wanted to talk to you about it, see if it was something you're interested in, because I don't remember you ever talking about moving in together one day." Ron looked at her sidelong, really not sure how to judge how this conversation would proceed. "You're capable of raising those discussions too, you know."

"What are you getting mad at me for?" She stopped and moved a step away. She always found that when they began to argue she needed the physical distance. "You can't make a decision and then be upset with me when I'm not one hundred percent on board." He had the luxury of living at home. Something Hermione hadn't had the option to do. Well, not if she had wanted to be a part of the wizarding world. Living at home with her parents would have severely limited her work or driven her into another realm altogether.

"Fine," she crossed her arms in a defensive stance, "you want me to raise a discussion. How about the fact that there are some things my parents wouldn't approve of and I'd like to respect their wishes. Why in the world would I push a conversation about living together? My father had a fit when he learned Harry and I were going to live together and that was just as friends. Could you imagine the heart attack it would have given him for me to have even opened the door for us to live together considering..." She didn't say the rest of the sentence. They hadn't slept together yet so that wasn't an issue, but it likely would have become one had they moved in together.

"I'm not mad. I'm... frustrated. I haven't made a choice; this is just an idea that I'm trying to figure out but you seem to have already decided that this is something I want to do all by myself."

Ron drew into himself reflexively, his chess-playing stare settling onto his features. About seven years ago, Hermione had forcibly changed her parents' identities and memories, then packed them off to Australia. Around the same time, he was pretty sure she had declared that she had no interest in going into magical law, too. He knew that people changed - he had too - but it was gradual when you saw that person all the time. In that moment, any anger he might have been feeling really did drain away to a dull frustration.

"Do you think," he asked quietly, "that other couples who've been together as long as us have this much trouble talking about the future?"

Hermione's mind had been occupied lately with finishing her research and the hope of gaining an audience at the Ministry. It made a nice distraction from the other things in her life that didn't seem to have any sort of forward motion. Now that there was some sort of movement she wasn't sure how to handle it. What was she supposed to, propose to him herself? No, that wouldn't do. Not because she couldn't but because there were only so many parts of her life that her parents could be a part of and she didn't want to rob them of this.

"I don't know," she decided to focus on what she found to be the more pressing topic. She wanted to voice that most couples that had been together this long had already taken definitive steps to secure their status for the future. "I guess I'd always figured we'd have a time frame before we began searching for something together. Most couples have a plan mapped out. Do we have a plan beyond a vague someday?"

"That's just the thing, though. You always have plans for everything. Everything... except us. It makes me wonder if you want that sort of thing." He gave a resigned but good-natured smile. "I'm not a mind reader, Hermione."

He sighed. "Want to skip the bookshop and just go get lunch so that we can talk more?" he suggested.

Hermione was extremely hurt by Ron's assertion that she hadn't given thought to anything beyond the day. She didn't want to get into it in public and she felt certain that she was about to break into tears if he pushed the conversation any further.

"Let's go get your book," she nodded and bit the bottom inside of her lip to try to keep her composure.

Ron nodded slowly. He wasn't sure how much of an appetite he had; his stomach felt like lead.

"Sure. Come on."
