Journal -- Zacharias Smith
Sometimes, I worry for the education of little witches and wizards everywhere. Muggles have their primary schools where their little children can learn important skills such as reading, writing, and arithmatic. Wizarding children, however, are left to the devices of their parents, be it homeschooling, joint homeschooling with another wizarding family or two (or ten), or outsourcing the education process to tutors and nannies (and maybe the stray house-elf, which may or may not be a good idea depending on how the family has treated the elf). Perhaps if we had a better means of education for young witches and wizards they'd grow up to understand the meaning of "unspeakable." They might even understand the meaining of unspeakable in various contexts. I swear, they think it means "challenge my ability to keep a secret and keep testing my patience to see if I'll hex you or not."

They might also learn how to make correct change. Next time that twat dolt imbecile bloke is working the till at the market, I'll just make do with takeaway for the weekend.

In other news, I think these kittens are defective.

On a slightly related note, I'm excited to try a new recipe.

It is interesting, though, that the Wizarding world doesn't place much weight in any of those three categories, but instead spell use, potions ability, and diviniation of some sort.

The easiest way to make change, if you're unable to do the maths, is just to count up from the total until what's in your hand matches the amount you were given. If your total was 3 galleons, 7 sickles and 3 knuts, and you gave him 4 galleons, all he'd have to do is start at 3G, 7S, and 3K and count up from there until he gets to 4 galleons. Though I agree, the maths isn't that difficult and Hogwarts graduates should be expected to do it.

You would think they would, especially given the fact that a lot of jobs in its own government require the ability to at least read and write at a basic level. And so does its school. Not everyone can divine the answer and mimicking the scratch marks of writing for what to put in an essay or field report.

But the maths thing, I suppose is why we've got our banking done with mostly goblins instead of predominately amongst ourselves. And I have actually walked him through that several times. After about the fifth or sixth, it starts to become annoying.

Having never been to a Muggle school, I cannot possibly compare, however I can say that I trust few but myself to give my daughter an education that meets my exacting standards. However, there are many Muggles incapable of giving correct change without the assistance of an electronic device to do it for them, so perhaps it would also depend upon the efficacy of the school's teachers.

I can te I'm sure part of it is also has to do with each person's ability to grasp or not grasp maths, but perhaps the wizarding world should consider similar devices and tills for such exchanges.

Would that not be enabling incompetence and possibly prevent people from actually learning how to do it themselves?

I don't know. I do basic maths in my head so I have no experience one way or another with such things personally.

I was by and large homeschooled and self taught, but I also know I had excellent (and very exacting) teachers. I don't know as much of Muggle schooling, though I know some. I think it just depends on the school and the area and the system, honestly.

Though calculators really are helpful for change making. Work a shift and have a hard day, I think most people would have trouble at some point making exact change -- I know I would garble it when tired, and sometimes just when scatter brained, but I've never claimed maths as my high point, either. I don't brew my own stuff generally for a reason as well -- though for some reason I'm not a poor cook?

What recipe?

It's spaghetti with an Alfredo sauce, snap peas, and grilled chicken.

Ah, I see. Yes, it was delicious. Definitely putting it in a group of dishes to make more often.

I think the fact that we don't have a standard primary education is hardest on those without the means to leave someone at home to educate or afford private tutors. That's certainly an issue!

What kind of recipe though? Now you have me intrigued.

Good. I'll be highly insulted if he dislikes my recipe.

I'll include the spaghetti and snap peas and chicken part, too, even though the Alfredo sauce is good for any pasta. It's also a great dipping sauce for bread.
