RP: Dinner!
Who: Susan, Dean, Eddie, Ernie, Hannah, Justin, Megan, Rolf, Rose and Seamus.

Where: Susan's flat

When: Friday 5th September, 7pm

Rating: SFW

To say that Susan had had an interesting day was perhaps one of the greatest understatements since 'Hey, if we point sticks at one another our magic is scarier!' Her day had been equal parts annoying, awesome, and confusing, and the prospect of having her friends around for dinner had been one of the things that had kept her powering through her sleep deprived state. The brandy and wine at Rose's had helped too. Still, she had just enough time after seeing Rose to rush to the supermarket and buy panic buy enough products to feed a Quidditch match.

Two hours later: her kitchen smelled amazing, and she'd managed enough just enough downtime to slip into a cute little dress. She was just vaguely wondering where all the people were when the doorbell rang, and the first of her guests arrived.

Susan had just walked into the kitchen to grab another bottle of wine, when she found Dean quietly pouring himself a glass of coke. She purposely made her footfalls a bit heavier as she walked in, alerting him to her presence. "Hey," she said, walking up to him and giving him a hug once he'd looked up at her. "Sorry about the bum comment before, it sort of just slipped out and grew bigger than a Hippogriff's ego."

She grabbed the wine, then turned and looked at him speculatively. "I've been meaning to ask you something actually," she said, seriously, leaning against the island and looking at him. "But before I begin I want you to understand that I'm in no way pressuring you, and I will be happy with what ever answer you give me, or indeed if you need a while to think about it." She grimaced, berating herself for making her question sound much more ominous than it actually was going to be.

Having escaped the noise of the main party for a little quiet and a new drink, Dean was surprised to hear footsteps behind him. When he saw it was Susan, he immediately smiled and returned her hug, greeting her quietly.

"Oh, I'll survive," he said. " It was just a bit weird for me. I can blame the alcohol if it makes you feel any better, though."

Listening carefully as he sipped his newly poured drink he began to frown, not sur if he inedible the ominous sounding words. "Okay," he said, drawing out the syllables to voice his unease. " Just ask me already, I want to know."

"Good, I'm glad" she said, sighing and relaxing slightly. She hated upsetting Dean, a lot of the time she could make herself get over upsetting someone, but Dean had a way of sending her these hurt puppy dog eyes that never failed to pull at her heartstrings.

"Okay, so I want to start this by saying that you're in no obligation to say yes, or answer straight away, and that you can change your mind if you want to," she said, looking at him earnestly before launching onwards. "I also want to say that it's also a slightly selfish question on my part, but that's beside the point. Basically I want to know if you'd be interested in moving in here with me." She looked up at him, see his raised eyebrows, and smiled. "Now I know you like being independent but really I've never liked the fact that you live in that postage stamp with a drug dealer on one side and a convicted pedophile on the other, but I've also come to the realisation that I should probably live with someone instead of bouncing around this big old house by myself. But as I'm a paranoid Auror type, it'd have to be with a friend who I trust. Say a friend who could take the money he spends on what amounts to highway robbery in the property context and re-invest it in his art. Someone who could use the shed at the back of the garden for an alone or place, and who could come and go without disturbing me, and who could eat solid meals. So, what do you say, handsome, will you move in with me?"

To say that Dean was surprised by Susan's question was something of an understatement. Not that she hadn't made comments of the type before, particularly about the size and location of his flat, but she had never seemed quite so serious or determined before.

He opened his mouth to say no straight away, but her point about not wanting to be alone and needing to trust the person she lived with made him pause and consider her points for a second.

He bit his lip, thinking hard. "Now I'm not saying no right away, but Susie it's not just wanting to be independent, it's about how I'd be to live with too. Yes my flat is tiny, but that's because my studio space is amazing, and yes my neighbours are terrible but my wards are good and Apparition means I rarely see them. Besides I grew up in the east end, it's not like I've not dealt with similar before. But that wasn't my point. I'm a work obsessed insomniac with PTSD who wakes up from a nightmare and spends half the night cooking." His mouth was running away with itself and he took a deep breath and deflated a bit. "I'm just not a good person to live with," he finished with, sounding a little pathetic, but firm.

Susan watched impassively as Dean open and closed his mouth several times, obviously blind sighted by his suggestion. To be fair on him, she probably had, although she’d been thinking about the possibility for a while. Originally, the plan had been for her brother to move in with her once he’d finished school as he was going to train to be a Hit Wizard. Then, his girlfriend had decided to train to become a Cursebreaker, and he’d impulsively decided to join her, and found to everyone’s surprise that he really enjoyed it. In the end his girlfriend had dropped out, and he hadn’t . Now, he was nearly finished his training and would soon be travelling around the world for the bank, so he wouldn’t need to live with her permanently. This had left Susan in a dilemma, as being alone in the house had slowly begun to drive her crazy no matter how much she loved it. Thus she had decided to ask Dean.

"I totally understand, and I don’t want to pressure you or make you feel like you’re obligated to agree to anything," she said, raising her palms as though in supplication. "The fact that you’re a work obsessed insomniac with PTSD who wakes up from nightmares and cooks for half the night doesn't bother me in the least," she said with a half-smile. "I’m a work obsessed Auror with trust issues and a penchant for making horrible relationship choices, and an almost pathological need to look after my friends. Also, I'd put you on the ground floor so being in the kitchen wouldn't bother me at all," She smiled warmly and kissed him on the cheek, expertly hiding her disappointment. "I'll let the matter drop," she added, picking up the wine and walking out of the kitchen before stopping and looking over her shoulder. "Although I feel I should add that you do yourself a disservice by thinking that you're a bad person - to live with or otherwise. You're not, handsome. You just think you are."

"Like I said, I'm not saying no right away, just reminding you of the issues. I know you have your own, but I tried to live with my family, back at the start and it didn't go very well. I know I'm way better now, but I have a bad past with it." He was feeling pretty resistant, but he could see that Susan really wanted this, or he had been able to before her face shut off.

" I'll think about it, okay? But I'm not promising anything. I've been living alone for a long time." He gave her a little smile, hoping it would make her feel better again. He didn't think he would end up saying yes, but she was a great friend and deserved to have him think about it for a while at least.

"I know, darling, and thank you for at least considering it," she said with a dazzling smile. "It was really just a spur of the moment question, brought on by the fact that Edgar won't be moving in with me. I would never force you to do something you didn't want."

She turned around and kissed him on each cheek. "You're a good person, Dean Thomas," she said, taking the wine and heading up the stairs.

Dean watched Susan leave, her words ringing around his head and filling a hole in the pit of his stomach with warmth. And now he didn't know what to think. At a loss he felt the smile leave his face, and instead he took a gulp of his coke.

It wasn't like he was going to get anywhere with his thoughts circling as they were. Time to go back to the main party then. He took a breath and headed for the stairs himself.
