Susan winced as Rolf's expression flittered from confusion to arousal and then to alarm. "Thank you, dear heart," she said, her eyes crinkling as she smiled. "The flowers are absolutely beautiful!"
She laughed and crossed her heart. "I promise to not bludgeon myself, and really you're not late! Seven was just a vague guideline with the understanding that we wouldn't eat 'til about eight thirty anyway." She ushered him along the hall and deposited him in the living room on one of the comfortable couches.
