Dean listened as Seamus chattered as he painted, a faintly pleased expression on his face as he concentrated. He had to admit that although he'd done Divination OWL he had mostly played into Trelawney's flair for the dramatic and what he'd learned from the books. "Well, that sounds positive," he said faintly, partly disappointed but mostly concentrating. At least it sounded like Seamus had some happiness in his future.

"Not accusing you of anything, just saying. I mean Jess would kill me if I tried to do this to her hair, but you'll be fine," he said setting down the green. Now was not the time to think about Seamus in the shower. He'd need the green back for some of the bits around the eyes and lips later but for now he could switch to purple. He had a couple of options for the purple, but one of them worked better with the green and he shuffled it closer, cleaning his brush thoroughly before starting again, working inwards.

"Anything else fun about?" he asked. It was easier for Seamus to talk than him while he was concentrating and he'd not wandered very well as yet.

"Well, she was hardly going to pull a Trelawney and go on about all the horrible ways I'm going to die, was she?" he asked, making a disgusted face. Divination had seemed hilarious, at the time, though Seamus had been a little creeped out by the idea of the Grim — it was too much like a Banshee for his liking. Looking back on it, making those prophecies to the classmates of Harry fucking Potter seemed like either cruelty or recklessness. Or just stupidity. Never put down to malice what can be explained by stupidity, after all. "Not today. I assume she's here to make some money, and advertise her business." Even though the signs outside had heavily advertised her as a 'true Seer' Seamus knew enough to know that even true Seers only made real prophecies every once in a while.

Seamus continued to try to watch the brush as it proceeded across his skin, rolling his eyes up to see where Dean was dabbing paint up against his hairline. It was actually getting tiring and after a while he gave up and closed his eyes. "''M not a girl," he said, as if that explained his lack of concern. His mouth quirked up at one corner. "Had worse things than paint in my hair, anyway."

He could hear Dean moving things about, but he didn't open his eyes. The sun was slanting past the top of the booth and falling across the top of his head, warming his skin. It was nice, and the light a vivid orange through his eyelids. His eyelashes fluttered a little against his cheeks but he kept otherwise still. "The flying horses are pretty cool, if you're into that kind of thing, and the Quidditch players are doing some flying demonstrations. Melinda's got her cake stall like usual - go by later and she'll force feed you something."

"No, probably not," he agreed. "Trelawney was excessively interested in doom and gloom, but most people don't want to think that way." He was very much against the general doom and gloom of her style of predictions. "Well, yes, money and advertising in one easy package. It's kind of what we're doing here too," he said. It was true too. All of them had cards on the table to hand out to interested parties. Not that the face paints they were doing necessarily advertised their usual styles all that well.

Dean chuckled and shook his head. "Yeah, I'm very much aware you're not a girl," he said with a smirk, which wiped away after a second or two when he realised just what he'd said. Then of course he realised what Seamus had said and his cheeks felt faintly warm, thankfully doubly invisible today. He manfully decided not to comment more than raising his eyebrows pointedly. "It's more that black girls and hair have a relationship I don't want to touch. I mean black guys too, but for me I have less of an issue," he said, patting his short fuzz of hair and getting a little paint in there in the process. Not that that was anything new.

"Oh, I should go check out the flying later. Although I admit I already found the cakes," he said, moving carefully through painting the next round of colour. He was biting his lip slightly as he concentrated on the edges of the purple, not letting it smudge into the green. He was smiling faintly too though, Seamus' face so close and he wasn't looking.

Seamus shrugged. "It's not really the same," he objected. He'd thought the fortune telling would be a bit of fun, and it had, but he didn't trust it at all. "It's not in your business interests to lie to people." Which was exactly what the Seer was probably doing. Statistically, she would see people today that were about to lose loved ones, or suffer illnesses, or go through financial troubles. Seamus would bet a hefty sum that even if she saw any of that, she wouldn't say so. It didn't really bother him - but the implication that Dean was doing anything similar did, and just wasn't true.

When Dean smirked, Seamus smirked right back. "Yes, well, I haven't exactly done much to keep it a secret." It wasn't that Seamus was an exhibitionist, but over nearly a decade and a half of friendship Dean had walked in on him more than enough times to confirm one way or the other. His smile only widened as Dean smeared purple paint through his hair. It didn't clash horribly with his face, but it didn't exactly add to the look either. He tried - too late - to swat Dean's hand away. "Careful. If you're going to paint your hair it should at least be the right colour."

Seamus usually loved watching Dean work, not that he ever said so aloud, but he normally focused on Dean's hands. With them so close to his face, he couldn't really do that without going cross-eyed, so he was left to watch the look of absolute concentration on Dean's face. His smile softened a little, but didn't disappear. He felt a stupid warm glow of pride and happiness that he was giving Dean something not-unpleasant to focus on in the midst of the celebrations, and that it seemed to be working. "When do you get a break, anyway?" he asked. "I'll stick around and we can go check out the flying together."

Dean shrugged right back. "Maybe not, but the true seer thing might mean at least something in the right general direction. I don't know," he said, hand waving slightly in dismissal. "Although a little strategic lying with portraits doesn't always go against my ethics," he said, smirking. Mostly nothing major, a little bit of showing the best self never did any harm.

"No, no you haven't," he said, deeply amused. It wasn't generally intentional, but naked Seamus had been a semi-regular feature of his life since age eleven. It's just that more recently the idea had been increasingly appealing to him with certain memories playing across his mind. He waved the hand away. "Eh, it's nothing new," he said. His paint splatters rarely matched what he was wearing, never mind the fact he'd painted his face today.

Dean was thankful Seamus had waited until his brush wasn't actually on his face to speak, at least for the pure surprise of it. "Oh, er, we're only doing an hour or so at a time, so probably not long." He had got a wrist watch with him but he'd taken it off some time ago. He certainly didn't want to have his rarely used pocketwatch covered in paint and that never came near the studio or any other wet paint if he could help it. He smiled and painted a bit more, switching to the third colour seamlessly.

Seamus kept up a steady stream of chatter as Dean concentrated on painting his face. It was mostly rubbish, the tiny little details of his life that no one else could really care about, and only Dean would let him ramble on freely. It was one of the things he liked about their friendship, that he didn't always have to put his best, most interesting, foot forward. He could talk about different varieties of ale, and how having two nearly identical varieties of top-shelf whiskey seemed stupid to him but he had at least one customer for each who'd regularly come in and order a glass - and who staunchly refused to switch to what they considered an inferior brand.

For most of the time, there wasn't much of a queue behind them but as the sun rose higher, more and more people seemed to be about in general. "You nearly done?" he asked, when he noticed Dean sitting back and looking speculatively at his face. The urge to reach up and touch the paint drying on his skin was immense, but Seamus kept his hands resolutely in his lap, spinning the inlay of his ring with quick little strokes.

Dean kept half an ear out as Seamus chattered away, he probably wouldn't be able to recall all of the details of what had been said but he'd have a decent idea of most of it. He got a bit too absorbed in his work to have a proper conversation when he worked, but thankfully Seamus was well aware of that. It was also the reason he didn't often have much idea of what had been on the news even when he'd had WWN on all day.

He was trying to work out if there were any more details he needed to touch up when Seamus asked him if he was almost done. "Pretty much. Close your eyes and shut your mouth for a sec?" he asked, wanting to get the full effect as he checked out the shading for niggly details. When Seamus complied he squinted carefully at his work, leaning in to edge a couple of the details in and use a fuzzier brush to add in a bit of smudge of mid-purple on one of the lighter sections as a shadow. Finally he leaned back, satisfied and slowly a smile spread across his face. Merlin he was glad Seamus had let him do this, and that he couldn't see the probably slightly silly smile on his face right now. He schooled his face slightly more normal grin before speaking. "You want to look before I fix it?" he asked.

Obligingly, Seamus closed his eyes and lips, feeling oddly on display. It was no worse than when Dean tried to sketch him, and Seamus had eventually gotten used to that. Well, he'd gotten used to it when he was fully clothed, anyway. Dean had never spent this long painting directly on Seamus's skin before, and it was a slightly strange sensation - but when Seamus opened his eyes again Dean was grinning at him.

"Well, you look satisfied with it," Seamus said, relieved. Dean's judgement was ten times better than his - but he wanted to look anyway. "Gimme a mirror?"

"Yup, but you've got no idea what I was aiming at. I'm just hoping you don't hate it," he said, obligingly handing over the mirror.

He looked on slightly anxiously at Seamus examined his now purple and green contoured face. He pulled his wand out, ready to spell Seamus' face to stop it rubbing off again before he wanted it to.

Seamus reached eagerly for the mirror, tipping it up so he wouldn't have to look down quite so much to look into it. "Oh, wow," he said, reaching his other hand up to touch and then snatching it down again. "It looks amazing."

He really hadn't had any idea what to expect - and he'd probably have said he loved it, even if he didn't - but it really did look cool. "I look like art." Which, despite the sketching, was not something Seamus was used to feeling about himself. "I'm going to have to hang around so people can see it. And I want a photo!" His mind was suddenly spinning a mile a minute, and he was spinning the ring on his thumb back and forth to quell the urge to touch. "You should sign it, or something. So people know who did it." Or just because it would be cool...

The smile that spread across Dean's face when he could tell Seamus clearly loved it was huge and he also released a slightly relieved breath. "Thanks," he said, understanding the compliment for what it was. He was about to slap Seamus' hand away from his face when he apparently remembered not to actually touch it.

It was a bit odd looking at Seamus with his face covered in paint, but since he almost always thought Seamus looked good the whole 'I look like art' thing wasn't all that new to him. He saw the point though. The enthusiasm though was gratifying, it was certainly more work than he'd put in to most of the other face painting he'd done. "I'm not singing your bloody face, you can tell anyone who asks," he said, shaking his head. The fact that Seamus wanted him to sign his face was sort of, well it was fuelling a vaguely possessive feeling he didn't want to examine. Writing Property of Dean Thomas across Seamus was never really going to be an ambition of his, temptation or not.

"Now hold still and I'll charm it," he said brandishing his wand. It took only a matter of seconds to circle the painted area and aim the spell at Seamus' forehead. In the few seconds it was going to dissipate from tingling to feeling normal again he put his wand away again. He looked up and saw one of Braith's friends had apparently just arrived for his shift and Dean lifted a hand in greeting.

"Looks like if you give me a minute to tidy up, and for you to cough up your cash I can take a break," he said.

Dean's grin just made Seamus smile brighter, the occasion almost forgotten for a few moments. "Spoilsport," he muttered when Dean refused to sign his face. It would have made it even cooler - walking around wearing/being a signed piece of 'Dean Thomas' work. But it was pretty cool even without that, and Seamus had enough signed works at home that he wasn't genuinely upset.

"Right," he said, standing so he could search through his pockets. "Payment." He made sure Dean wasn't watching, too busy with his tidying up, as he pushed a little more than was technically owed across the table. The pieces Dean sold at shows were often out of Seamus's personal budget, no matter how much he liked them, and he felt bad that he couldn't be more supportive financially. If he'd had the money he'd have bought at least as much of Dean's work as Susan - and probably commissioned a few things too. Sadly, he just didn't so he tried to make it up where he could. "No arguments," he said, knowing Dean would count it and try to give him change. "Come on, hurry up tidying and let's go."

Despite Seamus' enthusiasm about his face being signed Dean didn't bother adding it in. It seemed odd for such a temporary piece of art to be signed, no matter how proud of it he was. "I might do it and take a picture later for my portfolio," he said, suddenly settling upon the idea and not wanting to forget what Seamus looked like.

He shuffled around the pots of paint into an less cluttered order and set about cleaning the various brushes out in first water and then the sealed jar of potion hidden under the table everyone was using between sessions. It was the quickest and easiest way to make sure each artist could use whichever brushes they wanted for whichever paints. Yes, they had brought their own brushes, but mostly they were marked somehow and everyone was sharing a bit. He brought his head up at the admonition from Seamus, glanced at the money he'd put down and gave Seamus a look which was supposed to be mildly admonishing, but possibly was slightly ruined by his current phoenix-painted face and the fact he appreciated the gesture. He did one last visual sweep and nodded. "Right, Mr. Walking Artwork, I'm good to go," he said with a grin, jumping to his feet.

"Sorry folks, my turn is over. Barnabas here is taking over," he said, as they wandered past the shortish queue of people waiting for their faces to be painted.
