Twenty-five didn't really feel any different to twenty-four. Or any different at all, really. To tell the truth, Ron had felt older than that for a while.

But he was never too old to read any of his Martin Miggs comics, which is what he was doing now, sprawled out on his bed and contemplating sneaking downstairs for a second helping of sticky toffee pudding. Finishing one issue, he slipped it back into its protective cover and fished out the next from the storage box; this was one of his favourite storylines and he was regretting that it had been so long since he had reread it.

"Ronald!" Hearing his mother holler his name up the stairs, Ron tried to sit up but only succeeded in half falling off the bed. "Yeah?" he yelled, struggling to get himself upright.

"Hermione's here to see you." Molly Weasley managed to convey something in her tone that suggested she didn't like the idea of Hermione going up to Ron's bedroom alone, even if they were both in their mid-twenties.

Ron tossed his comic aside, then regretted it a second later. "I'll be right down!" he shouted, grabbing the magazine to put it away properly.

Hermione was feeling the weight of Mr. Lovegood's death. She hadn't realized how much he truly had become a figure in her life. He'd been the first to believe the truth about Harry. The only writer who had ever shared the true story of their adventures without gaudy embellishment. A man who loved his daughter so much that there had been no question about saving Luna from Malfoy Manor regardless of the fact that he'd tried to turn her, Harry, and Ron over to Voldemort. Finally, he'd become a great source of history as they'd shared meals and cups of tea with each subsequent visit.

As a result of the rush of memories there was only one person she wanted to be around. Without much thought she made her way to the Burrow. After knocking and greeting Mrs. Weasley when the door opened she placed her bag down on the edge of the sofa.

"Thank you," she said feeling a bit awkward. It seemed that the longer the two dated the more awkward each visit to the Burrow became. Hence the reason she felt highly relieved when he finally made his way down the stairs.

Ron took the stairs two at a time, having quickly pulled on a clean t-shirt when he realised there was a spot of gravy on the one he had been wearing.

"Hey," he said, kissing Hermione on the cheek and one arm wrapping around her waist. "I wasn't expecting to see you this afternoon."

Hermione was relieved that Molly had gone to the kitchen to take care of whatever it was she had been doing when Hermione arrived. "I needed to see you," she said simply as she accepted his greeting. That morning's Battlescars had been rough. Mr. Lovegood had been such a vital part of the war for her that there weren't many things that had been discussed that morning that hadn't reminded her of him.

"Can we go for a walk?" she asked glancing toward the kitchen. She really didn't want to talk where they could be overheard.

"Er, yeah, sure." Ron nodded, wondering what was on Hermione's ever-busy mind. He gave her a gentle squeeze. "Let me just put some shoes on. And maybe a jacket?" He frowned, considering what the weather would be like. "Yeah, a jacket." He could always carry it if for some reason it was warm enough not to need it.

After finding a comfortable pair on the shoe rack, Ron quickly put them on, then grabbed his jacket from amid the rest of the family cloaks. "Come on," he said, taking Hermione's hand and smiling. "It hasn't rained, so it shouldn't be too muddy out, y'know?"

His expression turned a little more pensive once they were out of the house. "So, are you alright?"

Hermione gave a sad smile as she watched Ron gather his things together to get ready to head out for a walk. As she watched him she thought of how rarely she actually got to see his routines. She had known more about them when they were in school and now that life had them paths that seemed to rarely intersect these days she didn't get to be a part of those things as often. She hadn't realized until she'd gone to check on Luna exactly how much she was missing out on.

She laughed a little as they exited the Burrow and Ron made his observation of the obvious. "So, you want to regale me with the weather," she stated passively. "Though that seems to be one of the lighter topics I've discussed over the past few days."

Squeezing his hand a little more tightly than normal she walked a bit without saying anything more as she pondered whether she was alright. "The last time I'd visited the Lovegood's I knew Xenophelius wasn't doing well. Still, when Luna said..." she trailed off for a moment. "It just came as such a shock. We've had such quiet years and he was such an integral part of survival and...." There weren't many people Hermione would have rambled with and lost words with but with the tears fighting and her voice beginning to crack she just didn't know how else to say it.

"Always a good conversation starter," Ron said lightly. He was going to have to work on his smalltalk skills if he was going to work with George, but the weather was a solid base to start from.

As Hermione talked, Ron fell silent and his expression turned sombre. He hadn't had quite the same fondness for Xenophilius as he did for Luna, but he understood the shock. While he had known people who had died, that had been during the war or in the line of duty. Mr Lovegood's death was different and it rattled him.

"Hey, hey," Ron murmured quietly, stopping them in their tracks and pulling Hermione into a hug. He wrapped his arms around her, her hair tickling his nose. "I get it, I do. It's okay."

Hermione buried her face in Ron's chest and wrapped her arms around his waist as she allowed herself to really cry for the first time in a long time. After what felt like ages she lifted her head but did not release her grip on Ron. "It should be easier knowing he had a full life, but it isn't. I just keep thinking of all the things he'll miss. Luna will marry eventually and who will give her away. There may be grandchildren he'll never know."

It was scary to have these thoughts. Hermione had never thought too far into the future before. There was a war to fight and the uncertainty of it all was more than enough to push away any thoughts of what could be. But now, now all she found herself pondering was the future. She had thought she was content with the day to day. Then Ron quit his job and things weren't as certain as she had once believed.

Ron held Hermione firmly, gripping her to him. She shook a little as she cried and that honestly affected him more than losing Luna's father, though he would never admit it. When Hermione finally found the words to speak again, that hit him hard too. It had been a long time since he could remember hearing Hermione mentioning just the idea of marriage and children that having her mention it in regards to someone else made his chest feel tight with an emotion that he couldn't, and didn't want, to describe.

"Luna's got family. We might not be related by blood, but we're family." He kissed her upturned forehead. "And who knows if Luna will even want someone to give her away when the time comes." He tried to smile reassuringly. "No one knows what's going to happen next, but I think Luna will figure it out when the time comes."

"There is a difference you know," Hermione stated. She knew that she had support within the Wizarding community but when she watched how tight the families held to one another she couldn't help but wish for the same. Yes, she had people that treated her as family, Harry and Ron were the closest things to family outside of her parents that she had. Still she knew that eventually Harry would find someone that was more important than her. In fact she was beginning to wonder if the same would eventually fall true for Ron. Afterall, she wasn't always the most available.

Dropping her arms she stepped back from Ron though she did keep the connection by holding his hand. "Or will she simply refuse the idea because only her father ought to have that honor?" Hermione knew how hard it was to not have her family around. When Ron left her an Harry she had spent many a night wondering what would come of them and whether she would ever see her parents again. If the possibility of never seeing them again hurt so badly she couldn't imagine how horrible the reality must be.

"I think it's a little soon to guess what Luna may or may not do. Merlin knows I can't predict what she'll do at the best of times."

Ron squeezed her hand, chuckling softly. "This is kind of strange. We never really talk about this sort of thing these days. Family, I mean."

Hermione glared at Ron's assessment of Luna. The more Hermione had gotten to know her the easier it was to figure out how she may respond to various situations. "You ought to pay a bit more attention," she reprimanded.

It was that bit of attention that had caused Hermione to stray away from discussions of family. At first she'd made a concentrated effort to avoid addressing the Weasley's as a full unit as they were no longer. After a while it had simply become more of an unconscious habit. "I didn't know there was anything to discuss."

"Pay more attention to someone I don't see very often because we're both adults with separate lives?" He saw some of his brothers less than he saw Luna, in all honesty.

Ron frowned, his expression hardening a bit. "I meant... future family. Never mind. I get it. You have other priorities." He shook his head. "Forget I said anything."

Hermione didn't like the turn this conversation was taking. She had come to Ron because she had been feeling isolated. There was nothing more she needed right now than to be validated and supported. She hadn't said a word about how he'd just up changed jobs, how she felt that they were in a comfortable rut. Did Ron even really want her anymore or was she just what he'd become used to? After all, he had just pointed out that they were all adults now.

"That's it isn't it? We all have separate lives. Decisions are made that make us happy as individuals without any care for how they may effect the others around us. We're all working toward something while achieving nothing." That wasn't true, she'd made some great strides in her work but as far as interpersonal relationships were going she'd felt trapped lately.

Unlacing her fingers from his she crossed her arms and stopped in her tracks. "If there's something you need to tell me Ronald than you should do so. Not that I have any say in whatever you choose to do with your life. It seems that you're the one who changed priorities." He had made that quite obvious when he'd informed her of his decision without so much as more than a cursory discussion that had let her know he was debating leaving his position. He hadn't even given her the courtesy of the knowledge before hand so she could process it.

Ron raised his eyebrows. "Bloody hell," he murmured. He threw his hands up, but there didn't seem to be any sort of gesture that was capable of expressing his frustration. "You mean when I changed my priorities to being happy and being able to spend more time with the people I love? That change of priorities?"

He shoved his hands into his pockets, knuckles white. "Alright, fine. I feel like I hardly see you. I was signed off work with stress for two fucking months and still didn't see you any more than I did when I was working Auror hours. Every time I suggest spending time together, you shoot me down. I didn't like how relieved I felt when my girlfriend actually wanted to be with me on my birthday last week."

The anger in his voice died, Ron sighing and looking skyward. "I don't want to be a bookmark, Hermione." He swallowed. "Something you come back to when it's convenient."

"The change in priorities that you made unilaterally. You chose to allow the stress to over come you. You, Ronald have kept yourself closed off. Only once YOU decided what was best did I to even know what was going on." There she'd said it and there was no taking it back down. She turned her back to him so she could fight back the tears.

"We were supposed to be in this, whatever it is, together," she said softly a tear escaping down her face that she refused to wipe. It was one thing to cry earlier because of the situation surrounding them with others but she wasn't going let him have the satisfaction of making her cry.

When she felt certain she could hold the remainder back she turned again to face him. "At least I've done what I set out to do. I've told you the importance of this job and how it's a stepping stone to learn all the law I need to so I can make a real difference." She shook her head and looked down at the ground to compose her thoughts.

"You aren't a bookmark. If anything you're more like the second edition of Monster Book of Monsters. Every time I try to get close you growl or bite. You chose to be at the Burrow and I get it. You're family has always come first. That's never been a question for me. Yet you can't accept my reasoning when I explain it to you. I don't want to go away for a whirlwind weekend and rather than try to understand you pout. If I'm going to escape I want to be able to fully relax and trying to squeeze a trip in would make me feel like I'm running. I've had enough running."

"Chose?" Ron spluttered. "Closed off? I told you months ago that I was unhappy. And I spent the months between then and handing in my notice talking to Mind Healers until the scars on my arms hurt. No, I'm not going to let you call me closed off."

Under his freckles, his complexion was growing redder. "I didn't choose to be at the Burrow to be with family. I'm there to save money for a house. A fucking future." Instead of frittering it away on rent in an extremely expensive city. By now he could build his own house now if he wanted. Or buy one. But that wasn't a decision he ever intended to make by himself.

"I don't want a whirlwind weekend, I just want a weekend. And it's not like you're going to take a whole week off, is it? I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but I can't even get two days."

Hermione could see that her words hit Ron hard. Still he needed to know how she felt about it all. "But you didn't talk to me. You never asked how I felt about any of it. Most importantly you wouldn't let me help." That was why she was really mad. She knew Ron was going thing things internally that she couldn't help him with. No amount of studying or logic could sort through whatever he had seen on the job without her. At least before they'd experienced the hell together so they knew the demons the other held.

She was going to go on about how it was a choice. She'd had no choice in the matter. Had she gone home there would have been an even larger portion of her life where she couldn't use magic. Then Ron's word stopped her in her tracks. Did he just.... no. But was he going to? Was that why he was so upset that they'd not carved out specific time?

"I never said you couldn't have my time. I just don't want to travel to the continent and back over the course of one weekend." She preferred to take the time to enjoy travel. In fact she desperately missed her summer week away.

"Because I didn't want to spend all our time together crying on you!" Ron ground out, his eyes feeling hot even now. "You were my escape from the mess my head was in. Supposed to be anyway."

The fight was draining from him visibly. That was the worst thing he'd discovered seeing the Ministry's Healers: spilling out feelings like this was tiring in a way Ron had never thought possible. "It doesn't even have to be out of the country. I just want to spend time with you, Hermione. I can't tell you things if you're always at the office."

"I don't want to be your escape," she said honestly beginning to close the gap she'd put between them. "I want to know it all. The worst and the best. That's how it's supposed to be."

"Then plan a day for us to do something, just the two of us. I'll even let you check my bag before we go to make sure I'm not sneaking any work along." She reached down and took his hand again.

"And I'm still learning how to share that stuff." He'd spent at least one session getting twisted up into his family history and self-esteem, the older brothers who excelled at whatever they put their minds to before he could even make his mark on the world.

Ron sighed and leant forward, his forehead resting against hers. "You're probably joking, but I'm going to hold you to that," he said softly.
