Funeral Breakfast
Who: Dominic and Luna
What: Food before the funeral
Where: Luna's house
When: Thursday 5th March, morning
Rating: SFW but potential for sadness.

Outside of the war, Dominic didn't have a lot of experience with death. His paternal grandparents were still alive and though his maternal grandfather had died, Dominic had been at Hogwarts and unable to attend the funeral. He had no idea what it would be like to lose a parent, or how much help he was going to be - so he was focusing on the basics. Food and tea and company. He apparated to Luna's place just after nine, bringing with him a thermos of hot tea, rashers of bacon, potato farls and bread rolls. Luna might not feel like eating, but hopefully some combination of the ingredients would be appetising enough that she'd have at least a few mouthfuls. Dominic had even specially bought an extra packet of vegetarian bacon - just in case.

He was dressed in normal clothes, a soft blue t-shirt and jeans, and carried his only decent suit with him, enchanted so that it wouldn't crease. That way if he was pressed for time he could change at Luna's and travel to the funeral with her. After running a hand through his hair, he knocked at Luna's front door, looking around her garden and the view with undisguised interest. He knew the Weasleys and some other magical families were from this part of the world, but he'd never had any reason to visit before now.

It had been several days since her father died, and while it wasn't exactly getting easier, at least everything was pretty squared away now. All of the paperwork was done and all of the arrangements were settled. She had Richard to thank for that. He'd came in and done everything that she couldn't get herself to do. She'd been a little more listless than usual, but that was probably not surprising. Today was her father's funeral and she'd been trying to prepare herself ever since she got up.

Even her own clothes had been picked out for her, though she hadn't changed into them. A little belatedly she remembered that Dominic was coming over to bring her breakfast before everything got started. Admittedly it was hard to remember to do anything when she was just so sad. Still she managed to remember before she heard the knock on the door. It gave her time to clean up with a wave of her wand before she went and answered it.

"Hi Dominic," she said with a small smile. "Come in."

Dominic's hands were too full to offer a hug immediately, so he just smiled back as he made his way inside. He glanced around the room for a surface to dump his stuff down on and quickly found one. "How're you feeling?" he asked, though it seemed almost a stupid question. Now that his hands were free, he took a step closer. "Would a hug help?" He didn't really know Luna well enough to just assume, after all, and he didn't want to intrude. "I brought some food, I wasn't sure what you like but if you'll show me to the kitchen I'm sure we can figure something out."

Once he was inside, she gestured to the table in the dining room where he could put all of the stuff down. "I'm not really sure, to be honest. I'm kind of.. just.. here." Maybe a little numb? It was between that and crying all the time, she went back and forth a lot. She nodded her head a little, "Sure. I'll try not to cry all over you." Which was usually what happened when anyone hugged her.

She moved forward and put her arms around him for a hug. Everyone was being so nice, and she was really grateful for it. And she really did try very hard not to cry on him or anything. Once she pulled back, she lead the way to the kitchen. "What did you bring?"

"I guess that's probably normal," Dominic said,"though feel free to cry on me if it'll help." He wrapped his arms around her in return, letting her decide when to pull back. Once she did, he followed her to the kitchen, levitating his goodies along with them. "Bacon, veggie bacon, rolls, potato farls. We don't have to use all of it - I was thinking bacon butties, but in case you don't want those I brought some other stuff. Tea, too, in case you didn't have any." And because he was pretty used to grabbing his thermos on his way out the door. It was usually full of soup, rather than tea, but a hot beverage just seemed more breakfasty.

He unpacked his various foodstuffs on the counter, looking around for a frying pan. "What do you reckon?" he asked. "Anything there that appeals to you?"

"Thanks," she mumbled against his neck before pulling back. Once in the kitchen, she opened up some of the cabinets so that they could get plates and things. "I'll try to eat. I'm not sure anything appeals to me, but I'll try. You could make bacon butties. Do you need to cook the bacon or is it all ready to eat?" she asked, wondering if there were other things that he might need to make the sandwiches.

Hopefully she could stomach something and keep it down. The tea sounded nice though. She still hadn't been to the store.

Dominic nodded - under the circumstances, trying to eat was really all he could expect from Luna, and if she couldn't manage it he'd know it wasn't anything to do with him. "A frying pan would be good," he admitted. He'd thought about pre-cooking the bacon, but not knowing whether she'd prefer vegetarian or not had decided to save it. Besides, the smell of bacon cooking was often enough to wake hunger. "Vegetarian or otherwise?" he asked, casting a warming charm on the rolls - figuring they'd be more comforting that way. The potato farls he could keep for another time.

While waiting for an answer, he poured a cupful of tea into the lid of the thermos and pushed it in her general direction. "You'll have to add your own milk and sugar. I figured you'd have them, if you used them." Unlike most people, Dominic could drink his tea any way it came. He preferred it with sugar and no milk, but he wasn't going to kick up a fuss if none was available.

Pulling a frying pan out of the cabinet, she put it down on the stove for him to use. Hopefully the bacon would make her a little hungry. "Regular bacon is okay by me." she wasn't a vegetarian or anything like that, as much as she probably should be. Maybe one of these days she'd turn out to be one, but right now she didn't care so much. If he needed anything else for the sandwiches, he could just tell her what he needed.

She took the lid of tea and smiled slightly. "I do." She got out the milk and the sugar and poured a tiny bit of both into her tea. Not too much though. Then she moved the milk and sugar closer to him so that he could have some tea of his own.

Dominic wasn't a fancy cook by any means - but he could reliably fry bacon without burning it or setting anything on fire, which was about the level he considered necessary. Magic helped, of course, and meant he could even have a cup of tea himself while he watched, occasionally flipping the bacon or adjusting the heat. "Tell me when it looks the way you like it," he said, once he'd set everything up and was leaning against Luna's counter with his tea. "My dad takes his as burnt as he can get. I'm a bit better but I still prefer it crispy, so I might need to take yours off the heat earlier."

He glanced around the kitchen, taking in the decor. "Have you got butter for the rolls? Or whatever you like." He should have brought brown sauce, but he couldn't think of everything and butter would do just as well. "Did you and Summerby get everything sorted out that needed doing?" he asked, thinking that if there was anything left he could try to make himself useful beyond providing food.

Luna nodded her head absently, glancing at the bacon so that she could tell him it was good. "Oh I don't want burnt.. I'm like you, I like crispy but not burnt. I'll tell you." He had been right though, the scent of bacon was making her a little hungry. Not awfully hungry, but enough that she was looking forward to eating her sandwich when it was ready.

Then she went to get the butter, and anything else that he might have wanted. She wished she had a tomato. "We did. He was a life saver, helping me out with all of the things I needed help with. We got everything sorted except what to do with the house and the Quibbler. I'm.. not sure if I should stay here. Or keep the paper. I need time to figure it out, I guess."

"At least those are things that aren't really urgent," Dominic said, thinking the idea through after he'd already said it. "I'm sure everyone will understand if The Quibbler is late, or misses an issue. You could even do a memorial issue. I'm sure there are lots of people who'd be willing to write something small about your father." Just because Dominic hadn't known him didn't mean he was ignorant to the impact he'd had on the wizarding world.

Still watching the bacon, Dominic moved to where Luna was hovering, touching her arm lightly as they came closer to sensitive topics. He didn't want to pry, but the balance of being there and being intrusive was a tricky one. "Is the house all paid off?" If there was still a mortgage on it then Gringotts might start bothering Luna for payment, which was the last thing she needed. Hopefully Richard had thought of that - but it didn't hurt to double check.

"That's really the only good thing about them," she agreed with a nod of her head. And he was right, people would totally understand. She wanted to create a special edition, dedicated just to him. There would be some people she could ask to write some things about the man, what kind of boss he was and the like. She would write her own piece probably. "I think so too. I'm going to do that." And then figure out what to do about the paper all together.

Her bottom lip wibbled slightly, but she managed not to cry that time. Maybe one stray tear. "It is. But it's so.. my mum was here, and then she was gone. Then my dad. There's a lot of memories and they're all good but I just.." Even being here now was almost too much.

Dominic eased an arm around her waist but made no comment about her change of expression. "You don't have to decide now," he said, keeping his voice low. "The house is paid off - it's not going to matter if you don't know what to do with it right away." He didn't even know if Luna had been living here, or if she had a place closer to work. Owls didn't need an address to find her, which meant he'd never needed to know it. "Before we go, I'll do a few quick diagnostics, make sure the house is in good condition, and then you won't have to worry about it for a bit." He didn't explicitly state that he'd fix anything that needed fixing, at least enough that it wasn't going to cause further damage for the time being.

The bacon sizzled and Dominic flicked his wand to remove it from the heat, but didn't let go of Luna just yet. They had plenty of time, and he didn't want to rush her. "You should take as much time as you need to make sure the decision is what you really want, so it's good that there's no rush."

Luna couldn't help but lean up against him a little as he put his arm around her. She didn't want to have a breakdown and she didn't want to distract him from his cooking. They were going to have to leave in a bit to go to the funeral. "That's true," she agreed with a small nod of her head. She let out a deep breath that she had been holding. "Oh thank you. That would make me feel better about things. Thank you." Anything to not have to worry about things for a while. She didn't know if anything needed fixing, but there were probably a couple of things.

She wiped at her face with the back of her hand and grabbed a plate so that the bacon could go on it. "You're right. There's no rush. I don't want to regret it." But she didn't want to be stuck here forever. There was already enough of her life that she didn't move forward in, she didn't want this to be one more of those things. "Shall we eat?" Or try to anyway.

"Right," Dominic said, making a conscious effort to sound cheery. He moved just far enough to one side to start constructing sandwiches. Bread, butter, bacon - simple, but classic. He added a pinch of salt for good measure, then cut each roll neatly in half and placed them on plates. "Voila," he said, handing Luna a sandwich. "The pinnacle of my cooking. Don't worry if you can't finish it, I'm sure I'll make room." He patted his stomach and leaned against the counter, not sure if she wanted to sit anywhere in particular, or if she was fine with standing.

While he waited, he took another mouthful of tea, still pleasantly warm. "Food, then diagnostics, then I guess we should get going?" He waved a hand in the general direction of the suit he'd left by the door. "Is it alright if I change here?"

While he was busy making the sandwiches, she went and cleared off a part of the table for them to sit at. There was a lot of stuff cluttered around. That probably wasn't a surprise to anyone. Now that her dad was gone, maybe she could keep things more organized. Doubtful but maybe. She smiled and took her sandwich and cup of tea over to the table with a small laugh. "Okay, thanks. Here. Sit." She gestured for him to do so next to her.

Luna stared at the food for a moment before she picked it up and took a bite. She wasn't very hungry, but she knew that she had to eat. Her head bobbed slightly. "All right. Yes of course, you can change here. I have to change too." As odd as her clothes were, she wasn't wearing a form of pajamas to her father's funeral.

Once he'd sat down, they are in relative quiet - partly because Dominic still didn't really know what to say and partly just because eating took precedence over making conversation. He occasionally glanced at Luna, who didn't look like she was particularly enjoying her food, but was at least eating - which he supposed was all he could hope for right now.

When the last crumbs were gone, Dominic stood to deal with the plates. He washed them up magically and then set them down on the counter with the frying pan he'd used. He wasn't sure where Luna had produced them from, so he'd leave her to deal with them. He kept his wand in hand, moving as close as he could get to the centre of the room and then pausing. There was no visible effect of the diagnostic spell he used, but he could feel it spread out from him. Depending on how sensitive Luna was to magic and how closely she was tied to the house she might be able to feel a faint echo of it. "Everything seems sound in here," he said. "Want to give me the tour of the rest of the house?"

Before they left, he pulled a notebook from his back pocket - just in case they came across anything he couldn't fix immediately and needed to note for later. "I hope muggle clothes are okay," he said, circling back to the topic of the funeral. "I've only got my school robes and they don't exactly fit anymore..." He smiled - he'd put on a bit of muscle since then. Not enough that he looked massive, but enough that his old sleeves stretched uncomfortably.

There wasn't much for her to say either, she just took little bites of her sandwich and tried to swallow it down. At least it tasted good, that wasn't really the problem. But she knew that she couldn't stop eating forever. Eventually she was going to be starving. So she kept eating as much as she could. In the end she gave half of her sandwich since he said he'd eat the rest.

Once that was done, she thanked him for cleaning up and waited for him to look around the living room and make sure everything was okay. If she felt anything with the magic, she kept it to herself. She could feel something though, but she wasn't sure if it was the magic or because it was her house. "Sure," she said with a small smile.

Luna lead Dominic around the house, starting with the floor they were on. The kitchen and the dining room they had already been in, but there was a room where they normally served guests by the stairs for him to check on. "Of course. Mine don't fit either. I don't think I want to wear some robes either. It's too.. sad." Her father would have wanted her to wear something bright and colorful, but she wasn't sure if she could do that either. "You can wear whatever you'd like." She started upstairs where all of the bedrooms were.

Dominic repeated the same procedure in the other rooms, making a few notes. Overall, the house was in pretty good condition, but like in any building that had been standing for over a decade, there were things that needed maintenance - and other things that were fine as they were, but wouldn't suffer from improvements. Dominic split them into two separate lists, keeping the one of necessary repairs for himself and leaving the other in what he took to be Luna's room. "If you do decide to sell, let me know and I'll come take care of those too. It won't make a huge difference, but you'll want to get the best price you can." He tucked the list into the pages of a book, where it would be easily found but where Luna wouldn't have to worry about it until it she was ready to do so.

"I'll leave you to get changed," he offered politely. They didn't have time now for him to take care of any repairs - he'd have to come back in the next few days. "I'll be downstairs if you need me."
