Gobstones vs Chess
Who: Greg and Ron
What: A mix-up
Where: The Roost
When: Thursday evening [backdated because I'm absentminded this week]
Rating: SFW for now

Greg's day hadn't gone well. He'd had trouble sleeping, for no obvious reason, and had then been faced by crowds of customers that he had to look after on his own because Weasley was spending more and more time lately in his workshop working on new products. Worst, had been the nagging feeling that he had agreed to do something after work but couldn't remember what. When his day finally finished and he changed out of the hated magenta robes, he headed for Finnigan's with the vague idea that it might be the night for Gobstones. It didn't feel quite right, but Greg honestly couldn't think of anything else he'd agreed to do, so he decided to at least check.

The Den, when he got there, was quiet and the few people who were present weren't sitting at Gobstones boards. After a moment of standing frowning at the world in general, Greg decided to check the upstairs room. Gobstones wasn't usually held there, but maybe it had been moved for some reason and he didn't want to ask behind the bar. If he'd been able to see someone he knew, he might have asked for help - but not from strangers and Gryffindors.

As soon as he walked through the door of The Roost it was obvious he was in the wrong place. It was set up with a huge wizarding chess set - and despite the violence of it, Greg had always hated wizarding chess. Malfoy and his mother had tried to teach him, but he could never remember which piece was supposed to move in which way and matches invariably ended with his troops shouting up at him, refusing to follow his orders and then blaming him for their loss of men. He didn't turn right around though but instead stood frowning. If he wasn't supposed to be at Finnigan's - where was he supposed to be?

The knight shattered with a silent scream and a sort of spectacular amount of debris. Ron winced, though tonight he was only a spectator. Maybe more of a coach or something? Whatever he was, he was trying to put his leadership role to good use and was compiling a mental list of constructive things to say to the players when they had finished their match.

To be honest, Ron hoped he didn't forget what he wanted to say; it was a mental list because he had forgotten to bring a quill. Or anything to write on.

Movement at the door caught Ron's eye and he frowned, seeing who it was. Just great, he thought. What in the name of Merlin's baggy balls is he doing here?

Resolving himself, Ron strolled over, and he might just pulled himself up to his full height with his internal Hermione telling him to stop slouching. "Are you lost?"

Another Weasley - as if Greg hadn't just spent the whole day doing the other one's work for him so he could mess around away from the customers. And this wasn't just any Weasley but the Weasel - one of Greg's least favourite people, who'd called him stupid and married the mudblood who'd hit Draco. At least Greg had no obligation to pretend to be nice to this one. "No," he snarled, pleased to see he was still taller than Ron even when he drew himself up. He was confused - not that he'd admit it to Weasley - but he wasn't lost. He knew exactly where he was. He just wished Draco or Pansy were here, they'd have something clever to say to make Ron feel bad. The best Greg could really do was glare, which he did for a long time.

"Get out of my way, Weasel," he eventually said. "I'm allowed to be here." It was a pub, and none of the activities had membership lists as far as Greg knew, you didn't have to pay to be involved in them - so if Greg wanted to be here, he could, and even if he couldn't Ron would have to go get the owner or someone who actually worked here to throw him out.

"Alright," Ron said, adopting the tone he used when a suspect was looking ready to hex him. "Of course you're allowed to be here." He paused. "At Chess Club."

Why exactly had George hired him? Ron had been wondering that a lot lately during the long, meandering conversations that he'd been having with his brother of late. He didn't hadn't figured it out, but he suspected that George found some sort of hilarity in it.

He waved a hand to his side. "Go right ahead." He wasn't going to move; Goyle could bloody well take a step to the side and walk around him.

Greg knew that tone - knew Weasley was acting all 'surprised' that Greg wanted to be at chess club. It frustrated Greg that he couldn't think of a good reason why he should be here - it wasn't as if Draco or Pansy would ever come to a club hosted by a blood traitor, nor did Greg think he'd spot anyone else he recognised.

One of Greg's hands curled into a fist as he and Weasley stood staring one another down, neither wanting to be the first to move. His other hovered over the concealed pocket where he stored his wand. It would be so easy to send Ron flying across the room and into his precious chess-pieces. Greg's year of schooling under the Carrows had instilled in him a confidence in his own offensive magic and he had no doubt he could outmatch Weasley, even if he were an auror. Caught between his desire to take action and the nagging feeling that he shouldn't (though why not, Greg couldn't think in that moment) he stood still, scowling, and waited.

If Ron had been an observer, he would have found this literal stand off hilarious, the two of them staring each other down while the rest of the world carried on with no one even noticing the two of them.

No, strike that. Ron still found it funny. He smirked and started to ask Goyle whether he had forgotten how to walk when he was cut off by a loud crash and a roar of cheering from behind him. This was quickly followed by one of the players, a normally quiet brunette, yelling, "Suck it, loser!" (Ron added 'winning graciously' to his list of critiques, though he wasn't very good at that either.)

"Looks like I'm needed," Ron said reluctantly. He needed to help reset the pieces for another match, unfortunately.

The crash drew Greg's attention too, though he could at least see what was happening without having to turn away from Ron. He'd forgotten how noisy wizard chess could be, and he'd never played it with pieces on this scale. With a shake of his head he returned his attention to Ron. "Go on then," he suggested, pleased he wouldn't have to back down. "I'm leaving anyway." He didn't want to stay here, with the noise and the people who thought they were better than him. Besides, he still had that nagging feeling that he was supposed to be somewhere. Since it obviously wasn't here, he was probably late. People were mostly used to that from Greg, but if he didn't turn up at all he knew they would come looking for him.

"Enjoy your stupid chess," he added as he half-turned to head down the stairs. He only hesitated because it was Weasley, who was still classed as 'enemy' in Greg's mind and he didn't want to turn his back on him without a shield in place.

For someone who had seemed to determined to assert his right to be here, Ron was amused by how quickly Greg seemed to be leaving now. He couldn't wait to tell Harry about this later.

"Yeah," Ron said, happy to dismiss himself from the other man's company, "and you enjoy your stupid whatever-it-is."
