Luna's Birthday!

Though they'd been in the same Hogwart's House, Dominic didn't know Luna particularly well - which made planning a birthday surprise for her a little bit challenging. Never one to back down in the face of a difficult task, Dominic had asked around and tried to remember all that he'd seen of Luna. He had an idea she liked painting and since Dean, the only person Dominic knew to invite, was also an artist he figured he couldn't go far wrong with that. The Roost was booked at lunchtime and for choir in the evening, so he'd chosen to set things up in his own spare room. The actual implementation hadn't been that hard. White muggle wallpaper (the drying process hurried along with a few choice spells) with 'Happy Birthday Luna' written across the far wall in dark blue glitter. There were art supplies - both muggle and magical - piled strategically in a corner and even three aprons.

After lunch, Dominic went looking for Luna. They hadn't arranged a time or a place but given how much she'd been working lately, he hoped it wouldn't be too difficult to find her.

The thing with Luna and her birthday was just that she wasn't entirely in the mood. She wanted there to be a celebration and some fun times, but between the stuff with her dad and well the stuff with her dad, it was hard to figure out how much to be happy. She was pretty much running herself completely ragged between the vet and the paper and taking care of her father. All of those things were on a full time operations and she didn't have any time for herself. But she should have a nice birthday right? She didn't think anyone was going to remember it anyway.

She was at the vets though, not bothering to really take a day or night off for anything. Richard was going to let her go to another country during the weekend, but even that was going to be done alone. At this point she was pretty used to it. When the door opened up and Dominic came in, she glanced up from whatever it was that she was doing. Paperwork maybe. Working on the paper while she had some down time.

To be honest she didn't think Dominic was being serious about her birthday thing. "Oh.. Dominic. Hi."

Luckily, Love’s Animal Hospital was the first place Dominic looked and Luna was right there behind the counter. He grinned and sketched a mock-formal bow. "Happy birthday, Luna! I'm here to kidnap you, as promised." He shut the door firmly behind him and walked inside, approaching the counter where Luna was working. "Everything's set up. I can side-along you to my place, or we can floo from Finnigan's or from here." Though he'd expected to find Luna working it hadn't occurred to Dominic before that moment that Luna might not be able to just up and leave. He knew from experience with Seamus just how difficult it could be to talk a business owner out of their workplace, no matter how badly they might need it.

"Is there someone here who can watch the place for you?" he asked. "If not, I'm sure we can put a sign up telling people to go to Rolf's. It's not far." If really necessary they could delay their celebrations until closing time, whenever that was, but Dominic wasn't going to suggest it right out of the gate. Luna needed a break and a few hours of being closed wasn't going to dramatically affect her customer base.

"Oh! Yes. You're here to kidnap me for my birthday." Like she had almost forgot that it was her birthday. That was entirely possible for the moment. Not to mention that Luna was a bit scatterbrained. She looked down at the pile of papers that were on the counter and then nodded her head. "Oh. Um. Yes. My assistant can watch things while we're gone and if there's an emergency, she can send them to Rolf. He said he wouldn't mind. I just need to put this stuff away."

With a small smile, she gathered up the papers and went into the back to put them away. And probably to tell Maura that she was going out for her birthday. There was the sound of 'Oh no!' that came from the back a moment later, as if Maura had clearly forgotten her bosses birthday. That was okay, no one else really remembered if she hadn't told them. She came back out to where Dominic was waiting for her and grabbed her coat.

"Okay, we can go. Um. Side-along is okay with me."

Relieved that his idea wasn't putting Luna out by making her shut up shop, Dominic smiled and offered her his arm. He apparated them immediately into his flat - right in front of the door to his spare room (study, workshop, experimental space - he could never quite decide what to call it). The door was shut so that Luna would get the full effect of the birthday message when she opened it. Let it never be said Dominic had no flair for presentation. "Go on," he said, gesturing to the door. "I didn't get you a present so this is it." He smiled again, because he did have some idea of shrinking down whatever the end result of the art-making was and sending it to her.

He didn't mention that he thought Dean was coming later. He knew through Seamus that sometimes Dean got caught up in his work and forgot to turn up to things. Dominic didn't want to promise Luna he'd be there if he ended up forgetting.

Taking his arm, Luna let him apparate them to his flat, glad that they weren't going to have to walk a long way. It had been a pretty long day. Oh. A surprise. She smiled and then opened the door with a bit of a flourish. Inside she was quite happily surprised. "Oh that's lovely. Thank you, Dominic. Really. That's brilliant. I've never really had a birthday party before." Even if it was just the two of the three of them. It was good enough for her. She was just glad one person had remembered.

Leaning over, she kissed his cheek. "Really thank you. I appreciate it."

Dean had received the invite to Luna's party and sworn because he had forgotten his friend's birthday. At least it gave him a little notice to put together a present. He'd potted up three small jars of fun paints that he used occasionally. One was colour changing, one glittery, and one heat sensitive. He wasn't sure if Luna had much time to paint, but he hoped she might enjoy looking at them anyway. He also wandered down to the markets at Camden Lock and found a pair of tiny carrot earrings Luna might like.

Just as he was washing out his brushes so he could head over to the party there was a knock on the door and Ophelia stuck her head into his studio. "Salut!" he said, smiling over his shoulder. Ophelia smiled back and walked up to him. He turned his head and kissed her in greeting, smiling when she wrapped an arm around his waist.

"Are you going home early?" she asked. "I thought you were enjoying all the paintings of your holiday?"

"I am, but it's Luna's birthday and Dominic's having some sort of party for her this afternoon," he said with a shrug. "Since I can work when I want..." he shrugged and trailed off.

"Luna is one of your friends who did not come to our show, yes?" Ophelia asked.

Dean hummed in agreement. "Yeah, her Dad is pretty ill and she has her own business to run and his paper now too. I think Dominic will have to drag her out of the vets or wherever he finds her."

"Oh," Ophelia said, rather dejected, her body suddenly becoming tense.

What followed was basically an argument about her not having met all of his friends yet and the fact that she wasn't really invited to the party. He explained that Luna probably just wanted something quiet with people she knew, and that he could ask when he got there and come back for her. She hadn't been very impressed with that option and he'd left somewhat dejected and his smile when he knocked on Dominic's door was a little forced.

No one remembered her birthday except that she reminded people a couple of days ago. And yet no one had really wished her happy birthday but her father. And now Dominic. This was going to be an awkward party with just the three of them. She didn't expect them to stick around or whatever because this was bound to be boring. Honestly she hadn't been happy in so long that it was hard for her to be excited about anything concerning her birthday. She was very grateful for the small party though.

She had side-alonged with Dominic back to his house and was clearly impressed by all of the stuff that he had gotten for her. It was so very nice of him. When there was a knock at the door, she told him that she would get it. Why not? It was her birthday, right? Hopefully it would be someone she knew instead of just some random person who had shown up. Awkward.

When she saw it was Dean, she smiled at him. The smile on her face matched his pretty much exactly. "Hi Dean. You didn't have to show up. I think it's just us. But thank you for coming."

"Hey, Luna. Happy Birthday!" he said, his smile becoming a little more genuine. "And you're my friend, of course I'm going to come when there's a party. Or, you know, try to come. And since I'm not busy..." he trailed off from his rambling with a little shrug. He'd been looking forward to coming, but his 'conversation' with Ophelia had taken the shine off the idea slightly.

"I have a present for you here," he said, slipping a present bag out of the bag he usually carried with him. "I, er, wouldn't be too rough with it," he said, handing the white bag covered in multicolour balloon print over. The jars were all spelled unbreakable, but it was still possible the tops would snap open.

"Aw thank you. I'm glad that you're here and not busy," she said genuinely. Now maybe poor Dominic didn't have to spend so much time with her. She glanced down at the bag and blushed slightly. "You didn't have to get me anything. All right, I'll be gentle." Quite carefully she opened up the bag to see what was inside. Jars of things.

"Thank you, Dean. That's very nice of you. I really appreciate it." Maybe this wasn't such a bad birthday after all.

Dean shrugged. "It's not much, the paint was from my supply, but I thought you might like the fun stuff to look at even if you don't have painting time," he said. She could discover the earrings for herself.

"So, did Dominic set something fun up?" he asked.

"It's great. I hope I get some painting time. That would be nice." Spotting something else in the package, her eyes lit up. "Oh my goodness. Those are brilliant. Thank you!" she liked them so much, she went right on to put on her earrings. They were fantastic.

"Well he set something up. I'm sure it's great. Maybe there's cake."

Luna's delight at the earrings made Dean grin, some of the tension he had been carrying since he left the studio falling away. "I'm glad you like them, I wasn't sure." He hadn't been totally sure Luna still liked vegetable-based jewellery.

"I hope there's cake! Birthdays should always involve cake of some sort," he said. "Shall we head back in?" he asked, gesturing into the flat.

While Luna had been fetching Dean from the front door, Dominic had made a start on his own attempted piece of artwork. He was neither as practiced or as talented as Dean or Luna, but that was no reason not to try. He had thought an eagle - symbol of Ravenclaw - should be easy enough. He'd seen the symbol often enough during his time at school, after all, but as it turned out the wings and tail were both rather more complicated than he'd expected, and the beak sort of looked like it had been stuck on as an afterthought. He took a step back as he heard Dean and Luna approach, frowning critically. The outline was at least recognisably a bird. That was something, he supposed.

He turned, pencil jammed into his pocket, and grinned at Dean. "You made it! I was a bit worried I'd have to pull a Seamus and go looking for you." He took a step into the middle of the room, gesturing to the now-blank wall behind him (the glittery greeting had faded to make room for them to work). "I know it's your day job and all, or one of them, but I thought we'd just kind of..." He half-turned to gesture to the art supplies. "I've got paint, pencils, felt tips. Anything you want, really."

Dean marvelled as he entered the room, always deeply impressed by Dominic's work. "I did! And I'm not that bad!" he protested, but it was half-hearted. He was more than aware of exactly how bad he could be and he had long since lost count of the amount of times one or other of his friends had had to come and drag him away from his work.

"I love what you've done, and I'm not really going to complain about doing more art. I love my job after all!" he said. And at least with this there were significantly less consequences to it going wrong and he could experiment a bit. "And it turns out my present might come in handy," he said, grinning at Luna.

Glancing at the work that Dominic had been doing, she admired it greatly. "That sounds like fun. It has been a really long time since I've had the time to do any painting or drawing." And she had missed it something awful. She beamed at Dean and nodded. "Indeed they will." She set the jars aside but near enough so that she could reach for them if she needed and then went to pick up a thing of paint.

Though she had no idea what to make, she started to paint anyway. Kind of free form. Perhaps it was a good way to help her not concentrate on the way her life had gone and how hard it had been lately.

Dominic nodded. He loved his job too - hence why he kept doing things for free for friends and friends-of-friends and even Luna, who he didn't know that well on hi own but was the friend of a friend of a friend. "Guess we're lucky, then. A lot of people hate working." Not that many of his friends, fortunately, but a lot of his clients, some of whom clearly resented having to spend money on his services to make a business they didn't really care about profitable.

He turned back to his unfinished sketch, frowning at the cartoony looking wings. He leaned in, trying to make the tips pointier instead of being rounded, but if anything that made it worse. "Maybe I should leave the art to you two and just take photos," he said, laughing. He had brought his camera, but he didn't intent to give in as easily as all that. He glanced over at Luna, watching as she went straight for the paint without any kind of outline. He definitely didn't have that kind of confidence, but then he hadn't painted artistically since he was in primary school. "Have at, Dean," he encouraged, gesturing at the wall. "Unless there's anything else you need?"

Dean moved over to the paint and considered his options. He didn't especially feel like doing anything too fancy, in fact something simple might be nice after all of the intricate plans he'd been making for paintings drawn from his sketches of Spain. He dug into his bag for the pad he'd found in a muggle shop, shiny sheets of paper that could be used as disposable palettes. He flipped it open and started dumping some paint on it before starting to paint some fairly simple lined patterns. "Yeah, we're pretty lucky," he said, smiling.

"I'm good thanks. Honestly I sort of bring supplies with me pretty much everywhere just in case. Well, that and the fact I forget to clear out my bag too often," he said and shrugged. "And don't stop unless you really want to. This is meant to be fun, right, not some sort of skills test?"

"They do seem to complain an awful lot. It's sad. Everyone should love their job." She loved her job(s) but they wore her out. And she didn't really take all that good care of herself when she was busy taking care of her father instead. Taking care of the animals as well. No time for Luna. "Oh no, you should draw with us. I'm not very good either but it's fun to do. And it's soothing."

At least it was her for her. She always found painting and drawing fairly relaxing. In fact she was drawing swirls and all kinds of girly things. Butterflies. A picture of a dragon. That kind of thing. "It's definitely fun, you should sit." There was definitely no need for confidence when it came to this sort of thing.

No one was going to see it but them.

Dominic smiled, glad to hear that Luna loved her job, no matter how much it was stressing her right now. "I guess everyone can't," he said. "We need people to do jobs like cleaning and retail and owling people about products no one really wants to buy. I'm not sure anyone loves those jobs - they just do them because they need money." And he was aware that some people would consider his job, or at least his dad's job, to be that kind of work. Still... surely no one really enjoyed cleaning up after strangers? He watched Dean prepare his equipment, impressed. "A man after my own heart," he said, gesturing. "I don't have that much in the way of supplies, but I've been known to tinker with little things in my friend's homes if I'm invited over."

Returning his attention to his sketch, he shrugged. "I'll stick at it for now, but I might get some photos later. Stick to a medium I actually know something about."

"My mum's never been all that in love with her job, but it pays the bills, which is the important thing." Dean painted as his spoke, painting something akin to a multicoloured barcode of thick and thin lines in a variety of shades. "Actually," he said, after a couple of seconds, "the important bit was probably the fact she met Dad through work. Not my birth father, my stepdad," he said in explanation. He wasn't really used to painting and talking at the same time, but it was sort of nice to have company.

He painted another line and then cocked his head to the side, an idea coming to him. "We could always do animated stick men, create some sort of thing together," he suggested. The other two might not have the experience to have as much control over their simple drawings as he did, but a little magic could make even simple stick men pretty entertaining.

"You do have a point, Dominic. Not every job can be great. I don't mind doing those jobs though, if they're needed." If someone needed to be cleaned up after, then she would help some people out. "Needing money is a good reason to have the job too. My mum had a job that she didn't always like, but it was okay for her." It was the stuff at home that she loved to do. But for her and her father, she was forever grateful that they got to do what they loved.

"Photos are nice. I used to take some at school. And for my dad for the paper. But I haven't in a while." She wasn't sure why she had stopped. Not enough time, she supposed. "Oh we could do that. It would be fun!"

Dominic nodded along to Dean's comment - and Luna's. "Yeah. Dad doesn't love his job, I don't think, but he's happy he makes money and didn't have to keep going to school. Mum, on the other hand... Total opposite. Loves her job, even when it's stressful, and was always disappointed I didn't take more after her on the academic side." Which might sound strange coming from a Ravenclaw, but there was more than one way to learn and Dominic had never really been interested in subjects that focused heavily on book-learning. "Yeah. I have to do a lot of cleaning up after myself in my work, but it's not my whole job, you know? And I get to use magic. I was thinking of people who clean restaurants and offices and that's all they do..."

"I think I can manage stickmen," he said, smiling at Dean's idea and Luna's obvious approval. He'd definitely love to see how Dean worked the animating of them - he'd been curious about the painting process ever since the show. Not that he was expecting this to be anything like as impressive, of course. There wasn't that much you could do with stickmen. "Have wizarding portraits always moved?" he asked, addressing the question to either of them. "It's funny to imagine wizards having moving, talking portraits before muggles had developed television. Might explain a few ghost stories, though."

"Neither of my parents were expecting massive academic skill from me, since they're not academic either, which is good, because I definitely wasn't a genius book-wise," he said, shrugging. He'd done okay, but he'd never been at the top of any of his classes. And going back after a year on the run had never appealed, especially given his mental health at the time.

Dean grinned and moved over from his random painting to a free space and stuck the big paintbrush he'd been using into his mouth and using a felt tip he drew two standard stick men in dark blue. He turned his head at Dominic's question. "I don't know about always, but for a long time, sure. I learned about it during my apprenticeship, the whole art thing is handed down from master to apprentice. I mean some of the simple stuff is obviously out there in books and stuff now, but some of it I'm literally not allowed to tell you," he said.

"Do you guys know a basic animation spell?"

"I don't know that I was expected to do anything, but I wasn't really good with book learning either," she admitted. They were both kind of odd Ravenclaws that way, but Luna always liked learning by trying her hand at it and doing things instead of reading about them. She liked learning, it was just not her favorite thing to do. She started painting little stick figures on the canvas and tried to make them into cohesive, like a little story.

She nodded her head a little, "I do. I have to know it to put the pictures in the Quibbler."

Which honestly was one of her favorite things to do.

Dominic raised an eyebrow - one of the most effective ways to get him interested in a topic was to tell him there was knowledge about it that he wasn't allowed to have. "Tease," he said, giving Dean a wink and a shake of his head. He was definitely going to go look up that simple stuff that was available, though. There might even be a way he could incorporate it into his work.

"I know a few animations spells," he admitted. "Mostly for objects, though, not so much for drawings-on-paper. But I'll pick it up quick." He was confident in his ability to master any 'basic' spell, especially one that was likely related to something he already knew how to do. He moved closer to where Luna and Dean were drawing and added, not another stickman but the same kind of stylised 'W' shape he'd used to represent birds in flight as a kid.

Dean shrugged apologetically. "Sorry, I can point you to the more reputable books on the topic, but I signed a magically binding contract about the rest." Some of the books he'd scanned had had hilariously inaccurate ideas about the non-public parts of the art creation process.

"Oh, excellent then," he said and pulled his wand from his pocket and animated his two figures, using the spell aloud for Dominic's benefit, who immediately started doing a silly dance in the style of the Macerena in time with each other. He snorted with laughter, not sure that it would work because of the simplicity of the figures.

"I like the bird," he said, grinning. "Well, I assume that's a bird," he teased.

"They take all of that very seriously," she said a little wistfully. She wasn't complaining about it, but she supposed she understood guarding that kind of thing secretly. But what all the secret stuff might be, she was completely clueless since she couldn't think of anything that could be that secret.

She set the brush down and smiled, watching the little figures on the page go back and forth. That was sweet. Picking up the brush again, she drew a little girl who started to do ballet twirls over the page. She put blonde hair on her and drew her a little cake. Then she drew another little stick figure who promptly gave the ballet dancer a kiss on the cheek.

Hey at least she could live vicariously through her stick figure drawings. However she did seem to be lost in her own little world.

Slightly disappointed, Dominic nodded. "I'd appreciate that, actually. Like I said, I'm not the biggest fan of book-learning, so if we can narrow the amount of books I have to read to appease my curiosity, I'm all for it." He watched both Dean and Luna carefully as they cast the animation spell, smiling at the antics of their animated figures. "It's a bird! It's just... far away." He grinned and then attempted the spell himself - to no result.

It took him a few more minutes to work out what he was doing wrong (wand movement, as usual) and get his own drawing to give a few apathetic flaps of it's 'wings'. He shook his head, annoyed at himself for not getting it but knowing that now was not an appropriate time to stand her and make repeated attempts. This wasn't his workshop and he was supposed to be helping everyone else have fun, not drawing into his own world of problem-solving. He summoned a few of the left-over colouring pencils and started carefully adding a strip of green 'grass' under Luna's dancing girl. "Maybe I'll provide the backgrounds and you two can add the action," he suggested.

With a glance at Dean, he walked around and sketched in a 'beanstalk' on Dean's other side, with some white-blue clouds at the top.

"Couple of books should do it," he said. "I mean the public stuff can get you a lot of the same effects if you've got the skills, but it takes practice. The professional stuff is a lot more precise, has more variations, that sort of thing," he explained, freezing his figures and adding some clothes to them before reanimating them.

He watched Luna's little figures with a smile and concentrated, sending his two dancers over to hers with a spell. One immediately switched to dancing ballet and bowed to the ballerina, beginning to lead her in a dance.

"Backgrounds work too," he said. "But, yeah, the spells can take some practice to get the effects you're aiming for." His stray man was now looking a bit miffed, his arms folded and foot tapping. "Of course, you get good and even the stick men have personalities, which can get a bit trying."

The dancing figures seemed to please Luna a lot. She liked to dance, but her version of dancing was different than other people's. The figures were cute though. She smiled up at Dean and Dominic and then put some flowers in the grass and a little dog that the figures could play with. The little dog ran around the stick figures, only to get petted by them.

If she wanted to, she would add a bunch more animals. She was probably better at painting them than she was people. But she didn't want to overwhelm the pictures with a bunch of weird animals. Most ones that they would deem not real, even if she thought they were pretty real.

"Try putting a smile on his face?" she asked with a shrug of her shoulders.
