The morning of December 14th in the Fawley household on Sheffield Terrace wasn’t all the different from Christmas morning, except – aside from the presents packed away in Alicia’s bedroom closet – there wasn’t a trace of Christmas to be seen. It was a promise Alicia had first made to herself, and later to the twins, that their birthday would never be combined with Christmas, in any way, and so it had become tradition that their Christmas decorations didn’t go up until the 15th.
Christmas or birthday, though, it didn’t matter, because at 6 o’clock in the morning, Isla and Liam both came storming in and climbed into bed with her. One day, Alicia thought to herself, she would be the one to wake them up and start their celebration with breakfast in bed. For now, she happily settled for being awoken far too early in the morning. Of course, that would probably be when they were teenagers and by then they would be away at school. That thought had her take a deep breath, because even just thinking about sending them off for that long was slightly frightening.
Breakfast, while delicious and fun, had still been a little rushed; Liam had been eager to get to trying out his new set of drums and Isla had been pleading her case convincingly for why they should go to the broommaker immediately so the custom broom could get made ASAP. On top of that, they had both been thrilled by the other one’s presents, so when Isla asked if she could try Liam’s drums, Liam had joined in on the idea of going to the broommaker this morning.
A few hours later, a bit before 2 pm, the drums had been tried, the soundproofing wards strengthened, Isla’s broom had been put into production and everything was ready for the guests to arrive. Despite her assurances that Melinda was more than welcome to stay – seeing as how her boyfriend was supposed to be there this afternoon – Alicia was slightly concerned to see and hear the notes of sadness in the other witch when she had thanked no and simply started arranging the Build Your Own Cupcake buffet.
It looked delicious, though. All of it. She colourful display of different cupcakes, small bowls of sprinkles, and pipes of frosting and on the table next to it were trays of the kids’ favourites of small sandwiches, mini pizzas, sushi and vegetables. All the way at the end was a bowl of Julian-approved treats for Wallace with a note letting the children know that they should ask Julian before treating the dog to anything.
