Harry & Roger
Who: Harry & Roger
What: They run into each other. Literally.
Where: Diagon Alley heading into Monument Alley Park
When: Friday afternoon
Rating: SFW

Harry was never in a good mood after a morning spent testifying in the Wizengamot. Today was no exception, even though a conviction was all but guaranteed. The courtrooms would always bring back bad memories for Harry; he didn't think that would ever change. He was glad he had the rest of the afternoon off. He was picking up Teddy after dinner for a sleepover, and he hated being in a bad mood around his godson. It would take him that long to shake off the distaste and discomfort from the courtroom, to keep from shivering at memories of the Dementors roaming around--even if those memories were six years old and counting.

Thoughts of the case kept him distracted as he wandered aimlessly down Diagon Alley. Nathaniel Warrick, age 60, stood accused of numerous crimes: spousal abuse, possession of Dark artefacts, use of an Unforgiveable; he was guilty of them all and Harry wanted to see him sentenced justly. It would happen, but it would be a long and complicated trial. His part in that was done, however, the rest was up to the Wizengamot. Maybe he could have Hermione keep an eye on the case. He'd mention it to her.

Lost in thought, he didn't realize he was heading straight for collision until it was too late to change course.

Roger was walking down Diagon Alley, absent-mindedly deciding what to do with a rare afternoon off when he felt someone ram into him - not in the fun way, either. Turning quickly, he saw Harry bounce off the solid mass of muscle that was Roger's back.

"Woah there," Roger said, throwing an arm out to catch the other man before he fell. "Are you alright? I totally didn't notice you coming along until we collided, sorry about that old chap!" Roger paused for a second and then grinned, "That said, it's a shame we know each other, because that definitely would have counted as a cute meet."

Harry blushed, though he was glad that Roger managed to keep him from falling. So much for natural Auror grace. Of course, Harry had only ever had natural grace on a broom, so maybe it it wasn't that surprising.

"No, it was my fault. I was lost in fault and didn't see you." Which was ridiculous, because Roger was kind of hard to miss normally. "And I'm fine. You, uh, caught me before I fell." Smooth, Potter. Real smooth. "Are you okay? I didn't hurt you did I? I was walking pretty fast."

Roger noted with interest the beginnings of a blush on Harry's cheeks and neck, and felt his smile grow wider. There were few things cuter than someone being flustered or embarrassed, and Harry looked down right delicious in his mortification.

He chuckled quietly and lifted both his hands to calm Harry down. "It's totally fine, mate. No harm no foul as they say." He watched Harry's blush grow even more pronounced and internal stifled a laugh, deciding that an expulsion of mirth at this point would go down like a iron hippogriff. "I'm totally fine too, takes more than someone ramming me from behind to hurt me. Where are you off to in such a hurry anyway?"

Roger was trying not to laugh, Harry could tell. It wasn't a mean laugh, but it still made Harry feel...young. Which was weird, because it wasn't like Roger was so much older than him. Just a couple of years, and anyway Harry hadn't been young since he was eleven.

Forcing himself to take a breath, calm down he smiled back at Roger. He was acting like an idiot, and it was entirely unnecessary. "I wasn't actually heading anywhere. I was just...walking." Hopefully that sounded less lame than it really was.

Suddenly, he was reluctant to just go on his way. He hadn't realized until now that company was just what he wanted, and Roger was always great company. "I wouldn't mind company, if you weren't heading anywhere important."

Roger watched a range of emotions war across Harry's face, before he finally took a steadying breath and smiled. Roger returned the smile, deciding to forego heading to the various Quidditch supply stores as he'd been vaguely intending.

"A walk can be good," he replied, still smiling. "I was just out to aimlessly walk around myself. The coach gave us the afternoon off, she said we needed to blow off some steam before the game this weekend."

Roger reached over and slung an arm over Harry's shoulder. "I think I definitely provide you with company, it might help me blow of some of that steam coach mentioned. Care for a drink?"

"Walking helps me clear my head," he admitted. "You're playing...actually, I have no idea who you're playing this weekend. I can only keep track of the Canons, and that's just because Ron plasters the schedule everywhere." He wished he had more time to follow Quidditch. Wished he had more time for everything actually.

He couldn't help the blush that rose up when Roger put his arm around him, even if it was nothing more than friendly. He just wanted to get a drink. "Actually, do you mind if we just walk for a bit? I'm not in the best mood to be adding alcohol. "I was thinking about the park. It's peaceful there. Maybe we can get a drink after?"

Roger laughed easily, charmed by the Harry's honesty. One of the few drawbacks of his occupation was the fact that people occasionally acted as though the only thing he could possibly want to talk about was Quidditch, and thus people would occasionally profess to have more knowledge of stats and upcoming games than they actually did. It was something Roger found irritating - both because he did in fact have interests out of Quidditch, and because he didn't mind in the least if someone didn't know what games were being played on a given weekend.

"We're playing the Bats actually," he finally replied with genuine warmth. "They're in pretty form, but then so are we, so it should be a good game. Besides, going out and fighting the good fight would maybe leave you a bit short to focus on Quidditch, yeah?"

"The park? Now that's a good idea actually," he said, heading off in the right direction, with his arm still slung over Harry's shoulder. Vaguely, he was aware of the looks the two of them received as they headed towards their destination, but time had all but numbed him to the things that were written about him by Rita Skeeter, Penny Dreadful, or any of their ilk.

Harry was glad that his ignorance hadn't offended Roger. "I'm sure you'll be great. And yeah, it doesn't leave me as much time as I'd like to go to games. I manage to make one or two a season." He hoped he didn't sound as bitter as he felt in that moment. It wasn't that he hated his job, he knew it was important and he was good at it, but sometimes he wished he could have a little bit more of a social life. And not as many court dates.

He was a bit startled when Roger kept an arm around him as they walked, but it didn't bother him. It was a friendly gesture, that was all. There were Looks, but then Harry was always the recipient of Looks whenever he went out; that hadn't changed over the years. It probably never would, so he had to learn to make the best of it if he didn't want to become a recluse.

"I'm glad they put this in," Harry said as they entered the park. It was small and green, with lots of flowers and a wishing well as the centerpiece. This time of day it was noisy with children and their parents, but Harry didn't mind. "There should be a kids' Quidditch League that plays out of here in the summers."

Roger smiled blithely as Harry visibly relaxed. "Thanks man, hopefully we'll beat them. Both teams are in good form but coming out of losses last week, and I think we're both keen to change that." He grimaced at the other man's lack of ability to make it to games, and the obvious annoyance it gave him. "That's horrible! You're always welcome to come to Appleby games - I can get you tickets. I'm sure I could tee you up with Pudlemere and Cannons tickets as well."

He noticed with a certain detached amusement that the Looks they were receiving grew noticeably more intense as they wandered down the street towards the park. Vaguely, he wondered if his upcoming trip shopping date with the girls would be combined with the friendly chat with Harry to create some sort of weird 'Exclusive Love Rhombus, turn to page six for more' scenario, but once again failed to care.

"Me too," he agreed, taking his arm off Harry's shoulder and flopping down on the grass. "Now there's a thought," he replied, tilting his head to one side. "I bet there'd be a lot of interest, although it could be a bit hard on the tykes when they start Hogwarts and have to wait 'til their second year." He threw Harry a disarming smile. "Not all of us got 'special dispensations' to start as ickle firsties, did we?"

In truth, Harry had no trouble getting tickets to any game he wanted. It was finding the time to go to a match that was the trouble, but he appreciated Roger's offer. "Thanks, I'll take you up on that soon." As soon as he could. He missed Quidditch.

Harry tried not to be disappointed when Roger took his arm away. It didn't mean anything, had just been a friendly gesture. He didn't know why it made his heart beat a little faster and the back of his neck feel hot. Roger was a friend, that was all, he reminded himself. That was all.

He flopped on the grass next to Roger, and grinned down at him. "I think there's enough going on first year that they won't miss Quidditch that much," he said. "I'd apologize for the 'special dispensation', but it was the best thing to happen to me at Hogwarts." Aside from meeting Ron and Hermione that was.

Roger grinned easily at his friend, certain that although the one and only Harry Potter could probably get any tickets he liked, he would take Roger up on his offer. "I'm glad, it'd be nice. Hell, maybe we could go watch one of Ollie's matches on a night when he and I aren't both playing?"

He lay back in the grass, positioning himself so that he was directly in a patch of sunlight. He felt his shirt ride up revealing his stomach and abs, but wasn't particularly bothered by it. He sighed contentedly, completely unaware of what was running through Harry's head.

"Now ain't that the truth," he said with a short bark of laughter. "I'm kind of glad I didn't join the team 'til second year, it gave me a chance to get on my feet course wise. But I get where you're coming from," he added, frowning. Everyone knew how badly Harry had been treated, and the fact that the Police had never been contacted was astounding.

Harry grinned, and ignored the little flip in his stomach that came when Roger suggested they take in a match together. "I'd like that. I...have no idea when that might be, but I'd like that a lot." Probably more than was wise, but that was a thought for another day. Harry was nothing if not good at ignoring problems until they blew up in his face. It was a special talent.

The little patch of skin between Roger's shirt and trousers was entirely too distracting, and he made himself lean back and study the sky instead. Clouds were way more interesting. At least, that's what he was trying to convince himself of. He really needed to stop acting like a teenager in the first throes of a crush, and remember he was a fully grown adult helping to raise a child. Attractive men should not make him so flustered.

Especially when he wasn't even entirely comfortable yet with the idea of being attracted to men. It was still a fairly new realization, and one he hadn't had a chance to act on. So snap out of it Potter, he told himself.

"If I hadn't had Hermione, I probably would have failed by the time third year came around, so I definitely get wanting to get your feet under you first."

Roger laughed breezily at Harry's definitive agreement to the plan. He was fairly certain that Harry harboured a bit of a crush on him, but after a bit of observation he'd come to the conclusion that he had the same crush on Oliver, and possibly Vikesh as well. It seemed more that Harry; new to the whole liking men thing, was doing what Roger himself had done when he first came out to himself, and getting crushes on every attractive male he knew. "Sounds like a plan to me."

"Ah, that Granger," he said, yawning ponderously and stretching. "She's nice. Very intense, but nice."

"Brilliant. It'll be something to look forward to." And he wasn't going to let work get in the way, not only because it had been too long since he'd made it to a live match. Life didn't have to stop just because people wanted to end it. Otherwise, they'd win by default. Or something.

He grinned, because that was one of the best descriptions of Hermione ever. "Best person I've ever known," he said honestly. "Smartest too. Ron and I would have died ten times over without her." That was probably even underestimating things.

"Of course it will, it'll be with me," Roger said with a joking smirk. "It'll be good for you to get away from work for a bit, take a break from saving the world and all that?"

He grinned lazily. "There were always whispers in Ravenclaw that she should have been one of us with those marks of hers. I am grateful for her to not letting you die though, Saviour of Hogwarts and all that."

"Yeah, it will be," Harry said, but refused to let any lingering dissatisfaction with his job come back in. He'd done a good job of pushing aside those thoughts.

Laughing at the Raveclaw comment, Harry had to admit it was true. "I think the Hat wanted to put her there, but then saw how stubborn she was and put her in Gryffindor instead. Lucky me." He made a face at the Saviour of Hogwarts remark, though he knew Roger only meant it teasingly. "Oh, shut it."

Chortling, Roger pulled out his watch and grimaced. "Ugh, as much as I'd like to stay here and hang out, can we rain check the rest of this conversation? I have to go and meet, uh," he blushed slightly. "I'm off to meet my friend." He got up and pulled Harry into a bear hug. "But you and I will very soon, yes? If nothing else I am taking it upon myself to get you laid, even if I have to do you myself." Grinning, he walked out of the park and headed towards Marcus and Finnigan's unaware of the impact that his flyaway comment had.

Harry tried not to be too disappointed. He had to get home and get things ready for Teddy, and Andromeda expected him for dinner as well. But still, he hated to end the conversation so quickly.

"Of course we can," he said, wrapping his arms around Roger in return. He wondered who this friend was, and why it had Roger blushing. There was no time to dwell on that though, as Roger talked about taking him out and getting him laid. "Uh..." But Roger was already gone, leaving Harry blinking owlishly behind him.

Well, he thought to himself, that was something to look forward to.
