I got a feeling (OPEN THREAD)
Who: Dean Thomas, assorted NPCs and OPEN (please add your own tags)
What: The opening gala is finally upon us
Where: Towpath Studios, Camden, London
When: Friday 21st November: setup from around 6pm, main gala 8pm onwards
Rating: SFW (potential for language)

This day had been a long time coming and Dean was feeling nervous, pleased, and relieved by turns. Occasionally all of them at once. The studios had been completely transformed with the two large spaces usually occupied by Cadmus, Braith and the kilns and potions area now looking like a gallery. The additional free standing walls and stands in the middle of the room broke up the usually wide open nicely and provided the space for them all to display their work. Dean and Braith’s work was displayed on the various walls and a few of Ophelia’s plaques and plates, the rest of Ophelia’s work was split between plinths and tables. Cadmus’ work too was split between smaller pieces on tables and plinths and the four large pieces he had produced set on the floor (two in each room). The lighting had been done wonderfully and everything was lit without the space being overwhelmed with light. The sculptural pieces were looking particularly dramatic and Cadmus was examining his largest piece critically. Dean rather suspected he was about to demand the lights be moved for the third or fourth time and he avoided the situation so as not to be dragged into it.

“It will all be just fine,” Ophelia said, sliding up beside Dean, her heels tapping quietly on the hard floor.

“I’ll believe that when tonight is over with,” he said, tugging at the sleeves of his new robes, the magenta stitching catching his eye. He still wasn’t convinced about the stitching, but he’d been told repeatedly by the tailor that it looked good. He usually felt uncomfortable in robes these days, no longer used to it with his tendency to wear some sort of trousers exclusively. “At least three of us have stopped fussing now,” he said, moving through the doorway to the other room where the drinks table was set up.

“Yes, although I believe Braith would wish to change something if she had the time,” she gestured towards Dean’s mentor, who was examining one of her own landscapes with a frown on her face.

Dean glanced past the catering staff making arrangements with the drinks table to Braith who was closely examining the orange elephant in the centre of one of her pieces. Dean was the only one who had had the luxury of finishing painting a piece that morning as all of the magical pieces needed to be completely dry before the final motion and speech spells could be applied. As was usual before pieces were bought the subjects were limited to their own canvases, but that didn’t stop several of them talking to each other, which meant there were already more voices than people drifting out over the space.

Finding that Braith was feeling picky about that particular painting but would only bother fixing it if one of her small number of regular buyers took it Dean and Ophelia continued with their amble around the gallery. The drinks were part way across the room where the door opened onto. The nibbles would arrive on trays carried by the staff, who were setting up both in the gallery and in the meeting room upstairs which had been turned into the food storage area. As far as Dean could tell preparations were on track and his parents were due to arrive any time now for their pre-show tour. He cocked his head and realised the soft music had already started playing.

Right on cue there was a tap at the door and Ophelia kissed him on the cheek and left him to it, thankfully understanding that his artwork and the show was currently trumping his mother’s wish to meet his girlfriend. The portrait of his father in particular was something Dean was nervous about her seeing, especially as it had a rather prominent position. He was extremely pleased with the way it had turned out, hence the prominent placing, but that didn't mean that he wasn't nervous about people seeing it.

"Well the important thing is that it exists? Maybe I could buy you a house and you could put it in a side parlour," she quipped. It probably wasn't the best time to be making light, but in all honesty, Susan felt herself slightly at a loss for what to say in the conversation. It was a rarity and it left her feeling spectacularly odd.

"Good, I hate all the supremacist bullshit," Susan said with a determined toss of her hair. "And good on you for sticking to your wand over it though, I like a man with gumption." She fluttered her eyelashes at him coquettishly for a moment, then snorted at herself in a totally unladylike fashion.

She snorted and nodded. "I do, and it's fine," she said with a cheeky grin and a flick of her hair. "I'll definitely come though. Helga knows that my attendance would scandalise a few of my pureblood relatives no end. Plus hanging out with you and seeing your sisters just seals the deal really, what time do you want me here?"

"Yes that's true, but even with heating charms being painted naked always makes me shiver, and yeah artists tend not to do Vogue level airbrushing which is more the pity," Susan said with a rueful shake of her head.

Susan nodded. "I'm glad you two have managed to work things out to a truce, it's always convenient to not be actively at war with someone you're working with. Things go a lot more smoothly, there's less boobytraps, and business lunches end in forty two percent less stabbings. Good job all 'round." She patted his arm and looked around with interest. "So what's next on our little tour?"

Dean gave a little shrug and tilt of his head at Susan's joke. He'd figure it out.

Her flirty attitude just made him roll his eyes. He knew it never meant anything with him, even if he was well aware of just how beautiful of Susan was.

"I'll let you know? I don't think Jess bought her ticket yet because of some possible late lab work on Friday or something. Depends when she gets in." Dean rolled his eyes. He knew Jess wanted as much time at home as possible but a couple of hours on a train could sometimes take it out of you.

Dean shrugged, half apologetic. He painted what he saw, and there was beauty to be found in everyone, or at least something interesting.

"That's a lot less general violence in your job than mine," he said frowning and shaking his head at her.

"Aaaanyway, next we have Braith's orange elephants. No I don't know why either. I love the woman like family but sometimes her art is a mystery to me. Even if I do like it.

"Then there's Maddy, you already know her. And then this, this is my father," he said, stepping over to the large canvas which was placed prominently on one of the additional walls which had been added. It was a full length portrait, and Dean wasn't much younger now than his father had been when the photos he had referenced were taken. He was in muggle dress and did bear enough resemblance to Dean that if you knew him the connection should have been obvious, but with the title Link he hoped nobody would question it.

"That'd be great, ta," Susan said with a big grin. "Trust Jess to come through with an actual plausible excuse," she said, pretending to wipe tears from her eyes. "I'll wager it was for a lab report and possibly also a boy and/or girl shaped person eh?" She stuck her tongue out at Dean, then schooled her expression back to something more acceptable.

"I should definitely hope so," she said with a quirked eyebrow. "If being an artist was as violent as being an Auror then I think I would give up on the world and go and live on Mars." She knew he wasn't being judgemental, but just for a moment she felt a pang of sadness at the fact that her chosen profession so often required her to be violent in her actions.

Susan looked at the elephants, then back to Dean, then back to the elephants. "Well, you can't say they're not interesting?"

She smiled at Maddy, giving her a quick little wave, before moving on and looking at Dean's father. The man certainly did have quite a bit of Dean in him - or rather, Dean had quite of lot of the man in him, Susan supposed - but there was enough difference that Susan didn't think there would be any undue attention. "He looks very dashing, and quite a bit like you," she said finally, after looking at the painting for several moments."

Dean shrugged. "Not sure, I wasn't the one who spoke to her, but I think she's up to her eyes in her first round of big assessments that are due after the holidays. Getting all the stuff done so she can write it up or something. Although if there is a person-shaped distraction she has the preference for male-shaped as far as I know." He'd been out for long enough that he doubted Jess would have any trouble telling him if she had interests outside of boys, even if their parents might give her pause. Not that they'd been anything but supportive of Dean, but it had always seemed like a bit of a hurdle to get over.

Dean scooped an arm around Susan's shoulders as he steered her to the elephants, providing quiet comfort. He knew as much as she loved her job it couldn't always be easy.

"True. I can't say that," he agreed, amused before letting her go again.

Dean had a slightly sad smile playing around his lips as he regarded the portrait. It was some of his best work and he couldn't ever see selling it, but it was good to finally show it. "He does, Mum has said so before now." He stepped back with a slow exhalation of breath. "Come on, I'll show you the rest," he said, guiding Susan onwards.
