I got a feeling (OPEN THREAD)
Who: Dean Thomas, assorted NPCs and OPEN (please add your own tags)
What: The opening gala is finally upon us
Where: Towpath Studios, Camden, London
When: Friday 21st November: setup from around 6pm, main gala 8pm onwards
Rating: SFW (potential for language)

This day had been a long time coming and Dean was feeling nervous, pleased, and relieved by turns. Occasionally all of them at once. The studios had been completely transformed with the two large spaces usually occupied by Cadmus, Braith and the kilns and potions area now looking like a gallery. The additional free standing walls and stands in the middle of the room broke up the usually wide open nicely and provided the space for them all to display their work. Dean and Braith’s work was displayed on the various walls and a few of Ophelia’s plaques and plates, the rest of Ophelia’s work was split between plinths and tables. Cadmus’ work too was split between smaller pieces on tables and plinths and the four large pieces he had produced set on the floor (two in each room). The lighting had been done wonderfully and everything was lit without the space being overwhelmed with light. The sculptural pieces were looking particularly dramatic and Cadmus was examining his largest piece critically. Dean rather suspected he was about to demand the lights be moved for the third or fourth time and he avoided the situation so as not to be dragged into it.

“It will all be just fine,” Ophelia said, sliding up beside Dean, her heels tapping quietly on the hard floor.

“I’ll believe that when tonight is over with,” he said, tugging at the sleeves of his new robes, the magenta stitching catching his eye. He still wasn’t convinced about the stitching, but he’d been told repeatedly by the tailor that it looked good. He usually felt uncomfortable in robes these days, no longer used to it with his tendency to wear some sort of trousers exclusively. “At least three of us have stopped fussing now,” he said, moving through the doorway to the other room where the drinks table was set up.

“Yes, although I believe Braith would wish to change something if she had the time,” she gestured towards Dean’s mentor, who was examining one of her own landscapes with a frown on her face.

Dean glanced past the catering staff making arrangements with the drinks table to Braith who was closely examining the orange elephant in the centre of one of her pieces. Dean was the only one who had had the luxury of finishing painting a piece that morning as all of the magical pieces needed to be completely dry before the final motion and speech spells could be applied. As was usual before pieces were bought the subjects were limited to their own canvases, but that didn’t stop several of them talking to each other, which meant there were already more voices than people drifting out over the space.

Finding that Braith was feeling picky about that particular painting but would only bother fixing it if one of her small number of regular buyers took it Dean and Ophelia continued with their amble around the gallery. The drinks were part way across the room where the door opened onto. The nibbles would arrive on trays carried by the staff, who were setting up both in the gallery and in the meeting room upstairs which had been turned into the food storage area. As far as Dean could tell preparations were on track and his parents were due to arrive any time now for their pre-show tour. He cocked his head and realised the soft music had already started playing.

Right on cue there was a tap at the door and Ophelia kissed him on the cheek and left him to it, thankfully understanding that his artwork and the show was currently trumping his mother’s wish to meet his girlfriend. The portrait of his father in particular was something Dean was nervous about her seeing, especially as it had a rather prominent position. He was extremely pleased with the way it had turned out, hence the prominent placing, but that didn't mean that he wasn't nervous about people seeing it.

Susan smiled warmly at Janice and Byron. "I'm glad," she said with a smile. "You've got so much to be proud of." She leant forward and kissed Janice on the cheek and patted her back briefly before doing the same to Byron. "It's been lovely seeing you, I must have you 'round for dinner sometime soon."

She watched Dean fuss over his parents for a few moments, feeling something akin to a stab of jealousy - though less intense - at the sight of him hugging his father. She chuckled at his comment and flicked her hair for a moment. "I do too, I thought I might keep it for a while, just to freak people out. It adds a whole new element of colour choices to my wardrobe." She stepped forward and engulfed him in a hug before grinning at him. "I would adore a tour, handsome, yes." She looked around curiously for a moment. "That's if I'm not monopolising on time with the lovely Ophelia or Seamus?"

"We are extremely proud. Always have been," Janice said, taking her husband by the arm.

"Yes, very proud," Byron agreed, smiling widely. "Thank you," he said, acknowledging her offer.

When Dean returned to Susan he was amused by her hair flick. "I wouldn't have thought it would suit you, but it does," he said, tilting his head in consideration and then shrugging at his own thoughts on the matter.

He shook his head. "Nope, not monopolising. Seamus hasn't arrived yet, although it should be soon, and Ophelia and I decided not to have her meet my parents tonight, so she's headed upstairs for a while. I'll ask someone to let her know she can appear again in a minute, I'm hoping she can finally meet Seamus."

He nodded, drawing together the route through the gallery set-up he'd like to take. "Okay then, let's start here and circle around, the nightmare stuff is in the back corner of the other room, I hope you don't mind me not getting right up to them. I'm mostly at peace with them, but I don't want to risk anything when I've got to make nice all evening." He gestured to the group of sketches on the near wall. "Let's start here."

Susan grinned beatifically at Dean's parents and nodded. "I'll be in contact with you both soon," she said with a grin.

"Dean Thomas I am wounded, mortally wounded. We both know I would look amazing with any hair colour," she said, giving him a deeply hurt look, before grinning and sticking her tongue out at him. "I had to uh, take someone out in a bedroom setting and they only like blondes, so here we are."

"Huh," she replied, tilting her head at him quizzically. "Why did you two decide that? Also, Seamus finally meeting Ophelia eh, sounds uh, fun!" She pasted on a bright smile, privately wondering whether or not there would be an explosion of manpain following the event, or if Seamus was actually getting better at the whole thing.

Susan nodded, not wanting to trigger Dean with any nightmare regressions, although she was deeply interested in them and made a mental note to return later to see them for herself. "That sounds perfectly good to me dear," she said with a grin. "So tell me about the sketches?"

Dean rolled his eyes at her teasing and poked his tongue out right back. "Lovely," he said dryly, not really wanting to talk about that particular aspect of Susan's work. "I just wasn't, you know, expecting it. And I'm so used to your usual red..." he trailed off and shrugged.

"Well Mum and Dad were just here for the tour, and there's a rather large portrait of my father, you know, the one I share genes with. I knew that was going to be pretty intense for Mum, so we decided to wait until next weekend. They're coming back to do the proud parent thing for the Muggle weekend and Jess and Cat are coming along too, so there'll be a whole multi-point attack thing going on. Seamus offered to possibly help deflect a bit, but it depends if he can get away." Dean was pretty sure that no amount of deflection was going to effectively distract four people from giving some sort of grilling to Ophelia, but he could hold it off until next week.

"And yup, we decided she's getting the whole singing and dancing Seamus-and-Dean show- although no actually singing and dancing because that is a terrible idea!" He laughed suddenly at the thought of the pair of them either singing or dancing, he was pretty sure neither of them had those particular skills.

He nodded and walked towards the first group of sketches, one of the nude sets. "Well, every time we get someone in to sit for us I tend to do a range of shorter and longer poses - you remember, right?," he asked, referring to the various times he'd asked his friend to pose for him. Although in the case of friends they were generally speaking clothed. "So I've gathered up some of the longer poses and done all the usual animation spells, et voilà," he said, gesturing. Each set of sketches included three different individuals, although several were repeated in different groups and different levels of nudity. He and Braith often shared model costs and some of these sessions never came to more than sketches to keep them familiar with anatomy.

"I know right," Susan agreed, immensely amused at how prudish Dean - and also Seamus - could be with the less savoury aspects of her work. "Fear not love, the red will be back soon enough. I feel my powers to kill diminishing without my luscious redness."

"Oh Helga, that'll be intense for her," Susan said sympathetically. "And you. Also what's the Muggle weekend?" She lifted an eyebrow at him questioningly. "Do you need me to come and help deflect as well?"

She gave him a long, ever so horrified look. "Please, for the love of Merlin, Nimueh, and Morgana, please don't actually sing and dance without me there to record it for posterity on some sort of recording device, but yes, I think that's a great idea." She coughed for a moment and considered her next words carefully. "So does Seamus, uh, plan to be nice to Ophelia?"

"Right, I remember," Susan agreed with a smile. "I also remember you let me keep my clothes on for which I was forever and eternally grateful for. They look absolutely beautiful though," she said, stopping to examine one of the more striking sketches. "Stuff like this is the reason I love magic so much." She spent several more minutes examining them, before turning and squeezing his arm. "So what's next on the tour?"

"Yeah it was. I got most of my feelings on the matter out when I was painting. Mum and I had a bit of a moment though, just now. Nobody else should know who it is from the title though, and it's not for sale so..." he trailed off and shrugged. He wasn't sure what he was actually going to do with the portrait now it was done, but he knew it wasn't going to leave the family, although he doubted his Dad wanted a large image of his wife's former partner in his home. He wasn't sure he wanted it in his flat either though.

"Muggle weekend is what it implies. We're all freezing all of our work and open the gallery up to muggles. Hence the family descending. It's not quite the same when you're used to the magical stuff, but Ophelia and I both sell to muggles anyway, and Braith has been known to, and Cadmus didn't put up too much resistance, so we're trying it out. Just for next weekend." He wasn't sure their advertising campaign had been quite so impressive in the muggle world (Parkinson's influence aside), but it was worth a try. "I wouldn't mind an extra body though, if you're free. I think they're coming down on Saturday. I'll let you know though."

He sniggered, he had no actual plans to sing and dance. It was the sort of thing he only did in private or when he was drunk, the latter happened almost never nowadays. "No actual singing and dancing, you got enough of that at my birthday." He bristled at the implication of her words. "Yes he's going to be nice to her! I know we were a bit... weird for a while when I started going out with her but he's not actually that much of a prat," he defended hotly. Although if Ophelia and Seamus didn't get on he wasn't sure what he'd do.

Rolling his eyes Dean gestured Susan onwards. "Hey I have no problems with nudity, and nudity for art in particular, but I still think it's a bit odd when it's your friends," he said. "Next we've got a plaque of Ophelia's, you can ask her about her things later, and my favourite is a vase further back anyway," he said, gesturing further into the room. "On the right the first of Cadmus' pieces," he said. This one was a tall, narrow, stone form although without consulting the label Dean would have trouble identifying what exactly it was.

"My next one is Cadmus at work. I may not be his biggest fan, but watching him work is fascinating," he said, watching as the painted version of the man moved around the very room they were in. It was an extremely large piece, even by the standard of Dean who was rather fond of large canvases, but capturing the scale of what Cadmus did made it necessary. In fact the piece he was working on in that painting was in the other half of the gallery. There had been debate about putting them together but it had been decided against in the end. The portrait version would make and re-make that particular sculpture on an extremely long loop as far as he knew. It took several long days to complete though, it was a bronze piece and in the portrait Cadmus was still sculpting the clay to make the mould.

Susan squeezed Dean's arm again in a sisterly fashion. "It's nice that you two had a moment and that you're not selling it," she said with a smile, after all, there was not much else she could say on the matter.

She lifted her eyebrows with interest. "Now that will be something to see. I'm interested that Parkinson approved it as well. Her family were very much into the whole blood purity thing." She lifted an eyebrow and gave him a long suffering expression. "Is that all I am to you Dean Thomas, a body? Oh the woes of a sexy woman."

"Well that's a relief," she replied, lifting her eyebrows at him meaningfully. The meaning would be lost on him of course, but she still felt it was a necessary action. The venom in Dean's voice was almost enough to make her break into peals of laughter, but she restrained herself to simply smiling enigmatically at him. There was nothing she could say after all that she hadn't said before.

She snorted and rolled her eyes at him. "You know I have no problem with nudity either, but I do find getting drawn nude a bit confronting - one, because it's usually freezing; two, because it makes you uncomfortable; and three, because the old self-esteem can take a bit of a battering

Susan nodded at Dean then examined the piece with great interest. "It's huge, and quite lovely," she surmised with a smile, before leaning closer to him. "What does Cadmus think of it, you're not his biggest fan if I remember correctly," she said in a conspiratorial whisper.

"Yeah, not sure where it will end up but it certainly isn't getting sold," he said and gave a little shrug. He wanted to see the portrait regularly, but perhaps not quite all the time.

Dean wrinkled his nose a little, the conversation which had brought that about had been a little tense, at least as far as Dean was concerned. "I'm not sure she doesn't still feel that way, but she also sees a business opportunity so when we were said we were already selling to Muggles..." he shrugged, gesturing to mean 'she went along with it'.

He stuck his tongue out. "Oh, you know what I mean!" he said, amused. He knew Susan hadn't actually taken offence. "Seriously, you should come, I'm sure my sisters would love to see you."

He nodded, not really following that particular raising of Susan's eyebrows. As well as he knew her did not clue him in to every micro-twitch of her face. They all meant too many things and if she didn't want to be obvious she usually wasn't.

Chuckling slightly he shrugged. "The brilliance of magic includes directional heating charms so you usually don't get too cold, but, yeah, usually still standing in a draughty room and artists aren't generally known for making their models look good for their benefit." Dean had modelled for people a few times as well as taking reference photos of himself sometimes, so he understood her issues.

"Thanks," he said, smiling. Despite his dislike for Cadmus as a person he admired his art, even if it wouldn't be what he'd choose to decorate with. "Yeah, we don't get on that well, but I have to admit to his work being both good and pretty sought after. We managed to tolerate each other in appropriate doses to get it done, and he thankfully doesn't hate it, which is helpful." Dean shrugged philosophically. He and Cadmus were never destined to be good friends but they had managed to form a truce over the years. It mostly involved them not talking unless they had to.

"Well the important thing is that it exists? Maybe I could buy you a house and you could put it in a side parlour," she quipped. It probably wasn't the best time to be making light, but in all honesty, Susan felt herself slightly at a loss for what to say in the conversation. It was a rarity and it left her feeling spectacularly odd.

"Good, I hate all the supremacist bullshit," Susan said with a determined toss of her hair. "And good on you for sticking to your wand over it though, I like a man with gumption." She fluttered her eyelashes at him coquettishly for a moment, then snorted at herself in a totally unladylike fashion.

She snorted and nodded. "I do, and it's fine," she said with a cheeky grin and a flick of her hair. "I'll definitely come though. Helga knows that my attendance would scandalise a few of my pureblood relatives no end. Plus hanging out with you and seeing your sisters just seals the deal really, what time do you want me here?"

"Yes that's true, but even with heating charms being painted naked always makes me shiver, and yeah artists tend not to do Vogue level airbrushing which is more the pity," Susan said with a rueful shake of her head.

Susan nodded. "I'm glad you two have managed to work things out to a truce, it's always convenient to not be actively at war with someone you're working with. Things go a lot more smoothly, there's less boobytraps, and business lunches end in forty two percent less stabbings. Good job all 'round." She patted his arm and looked around with interest. "So what's next on our little tour?"

Dean gave a little shrug and tilt of his head at Susan's joke. He'd figure it out.

Her flirty attitude just made him roll his eyes. He knew it never meant anything with him, even if he was well aware of just how beautiful of Susan was.

"I'll let you know? I don't think Jess bought her ticket yet because of some possible late lab work on Friday or something. Depends when she gets in." Dean rolled his eyes. He knew Jess wanted as much time at home as possible but a couple of hours on a train could sometimes take it out of you.

Dean shrugged, half apologetic. He painted what he saw, and there was beauty to be found in everyone, or at least something interesting.

"That's a lot less general violence in your job than mine," he said frowning and shaking his head at her.

"Aaaanyway, next we have Braith's orange elephants. No I don't know why either. I love the woman like family but sometimes her art is a mystery to me. Even if I do like it.

"Then there's Maddy, you already know her. And then this, this is my father," he said, stepping over to the large canvas which was placed prominently on one of the additional walls which had been added. It was a full length portrait, and Dean wasn't much younger now than his father had been when the photos he had referenced were taken. He was in muggle dress and did bear enough resemblance to Dean that if you knew him the connection should have been obvious, but with the title Link he hoped nobody would question it.

"That'd be great, ta," Susan said with a big grin. "Trust Jess to come through with an actual plausible excuse," she said, pretending to wipe tears from her eyes. "I'll wager it was for a lab report and possibly also a boy and/or girl shaped person eh?" She stuck her tongue out at Dean, then schooled her expression back to something more acceptable.

"I should definitely hope so," she said with a quirked eyebrow. "If being an artist was as violent as being an Auror then I think I would give up on the world and go and live on Mars." She knew he wasn't being judgemental, but just for a moment she felt a pang of sadness at the fact that her chosen profession so often required her to be violent in her actions.

Susan looked at the elephants, then back to Dean, then back to the elephants. "Well, you can't say they're not interesting?"

She smiled at Maddy, giving her a quick little wave, before moving on and looking at Dean's father. The man certainly did have quite a bit of Dean in him - or rather, Dean had quite of lot of the man in him, Susan supposed - but there was enough difference that Susan didn't think there would be any undue attention. "He looks very dashing, and quite a bit like you," she said finally, after looking at the painting for several moments."

Dean shrugged. "Not sure, I wasn't the one who spoke to her, but I think she's up to her eyes in her first round of big assessments that are due after the holidays. Getting all the stuff done so she can write it up or something. Although if there is a person-shaped distraction she has the preference for male-shaped as far as I know." He'd been out for long enough that he doubted Jess would have any trouble telling him if she had interests outside of boys, even if their parents might give her pause. Not that they'd been anything but supportive of Dean, but it had always seemed like a bit of a hurdle to get over.

Dean scooped an arm around Susan's shoulders as he steered her to the elephants, providing quiet comfort. He knew as much as she loved her job it couldn't always be easy.

"True. I can't say that," he agreed, amused before letting her go again.

Dean had a slightly sad smile playing around his lips as he regarded the portrait. It was some of his best work and he couldn't ever see selling it, but it was good to finally show it. "He does, Mum has said so before now." He stepped back with a slow exhalation of breath. "Come on, I'll show you the rest," he said, guiding Susan onwards.
