I got a feeling (OPEN THREAD)
Who: Dean Thomas, assorted NPCs and OPEN (please add your own tags)
What: The opening gala is finally upon us
Where: Towpath Studios, Camden, London
When: Friday 21st November: setup from around 6pm, main gala 8pm onwards
Rating: SFW (potential for language)

This day had been a long time coming and Dean was feeling nervous, pleased, and relieved by turns. Occasionally all of them at once. The studios had been completely transformed with the two large spaces usually occupied by Cadmus, Braith and the kilns and potions area now looking like a gallery. The additional free standing walls and stands in the middle of the room broke up the usually wide open nicely and provided the space for them all to display their work. Dean and Braith’s work was displayed on the various walls and a few of Ophelia’s plaques and plates, the rest of Ophelia’s work was split between plinths and tables. Cadmus’ work too was split between smaller pieces on tables and plinths and the four large pieces he had produced set on the floor (two in each room). The lighting had been done wonderfully and everything was lit without the space being overwhelmed with light. The sculptural pieces were looking particularly dramatic and Cadmus was examining his largest piece critically. Dean rather suspected he was about to demand the lights be moved for the third or fourth time and he avoided the situation so as not to be dragged into it.

“It will all be just fine,” Ophelia said, sliding up beside Dean, her heels tapping quietly on the hard floor.

“I’ll believe that when tonight is over with,” he said, tugging at the sleeves of his new robes, the magenta stitching catching his eye. He still wasn’t convinced about the stitching, but he’d been told repeatedly by the tailor that it looked good. He usually felt uncomfortable in robes these days, no longer used to it with his tendency to wear some sort of trousers exclusively. “At least three of us have stopped fussing now,” he said, moving through the doorway to the other room where the drinks table was set up.

“Yes, although I believe Braith would wish to change something if she had the time,” she gestured towards Dean’s mentor, who was examining one of her own landscapes with a frown on her face.

Dean glanced past the catering staff making arrangements with the drinks table to Braith who was closely examining the orange elephant in the centre of one of her pieces. Dean was the only one who had had the luxury of finishing painting a piece that morning as all of the magical pieces needed to be completely dry before the final motion and speech spells could be applied. As was usual before pieces were bought the subjects were limited to their own canvases, but that didn’t stop several of them talking to each other, which meant there were already more voices than people drifting out over the space.

Finding that Braith was feeling picky about that particular painting but would only bother fixing it if one of her small number of regular buyers took it Dean and Ophelia continued with their amble around the gallery. The drinks were part way across the room where the door opened onto. The nibbles would arrive on trays carried by the staff, who were setting up both in the gallery and in the meeting room upstairs which had been turned into the food storage area. As far as Dean could tell preparations were on track and his parents were due to arrive any time now for their pre-show tour. He cocked his head and realised the soft music had already started playing.

Right on cue there was a tap at the door and Ophelia kissed him on the cheek and left him to it, thankfully understanding that his artwork and the show was currently trumping his mother’s wish to meet his girlfriend. The portrait of his father in particular was something Dean was nervous about her seeing, especially as it had a rather prominent position. He was extremely pleased with the way it had turned out, hence the prominent placing, but that didn't mean that he wasn't nervous about people seeing it.

Once the doors open at 8pm the drinks and nibbles flow and the four artists mingle with the visitors, talking about their art, open to discussing commissions, or just chatting.

Around 9pm a short speech by Jeremy, the former occupant of Ophelia's studio, occurs introducing the artists and thanking everybody for coming, and the staff for their hard work. (He was one of the founders of the studio group along with Cadmus.)

Bryony and Open
[info]goodlight
2014-11-21 05:19 pm UTC (link)
Though she didn't have any work on display, Braith had insisted that Bryony come along to as much of the show as she could for the next few days. She hadn't said it outright, but Bryony had a suspicion that Braith thought she needed to get used to the idea of actually interacting with potential customers - and Bryony couldn't blame her. Though she was passionate about her work, talking about it to others still made her feel as if she were doing something wrong, calling too much attention to herself.

Tonight, her mother had had surprisingly little input into her robes and Bryony was dressed in simple black with small silver earrings and the ring Marcus had almost proposed with actually on her finger for once, rather than on a necklace tucked into her robes. She was skirting the crowd, letting the artists who actually had work on display talk to those customers who seemed interested - but of course they couldn't be everywhere at once. So after noticing the same person studying Yearning on two separate circuits of the room while Dean was talking to someone else, Bryony mustered up the courage to go and make herself useful. "It's lovely, isn't it?" she said, coming up to the side of the painting. "It makes me think of Christmas, even though it isn't explicitly a Christmas scene."

Dominic and Open

His work was done, but Dominic had figured he'd hang around for a little while and take a look at the various art. He'd seen it when he was doing the lighting, of course, but he hadn't really been looking. On the whole, the sculptures interested him more than the paintings - though the magical effects on some of Dean's darker pieces were fascinating - and it was these he focused on.

He had to resist the urge to get his wand out and fiddle with the light just a little more. It was so close to being perfect, but this sculpture could use... He forced his mind away from that topic. It would be rude to keep changing things now, when customers were arriving and the artists had declared themselves satisfied. He turned his attention to people watching, instead. "Interesting crowd," he murmured, more to himself than to anyone in particular.

Dennis wandered through the gallery, looking at the various paintings, sculptures, and ceramics with keen interest. Art galleries weren't usually his scene, but the Arts and Leisure reporter from the Prophet who had been slated to cover the gallery opening had come down with some sort of highly debilitating form of purple fever, and through the odd bureaucracy of the newspaper, Dennis had found himself being volunteered to cover the show for her. Not that it was a particular hardship, he thought to himself as he absently grabbed some sort of canapé and munched on it thoughtfully in front of one of Thomas' darker and more atmospheric pieces.

He looked up with surprise as Dominic stood near him, though it's obvious he hadn't really directed it at him. Still, he was nice to look at so Dennis grinned and nodded. "Yeah, art galleries always bring out a really weird collection of people, don't you think?" He turned his head and went back to looking at the painting. "Still, the artwork is all pretty amazing, right?"

"You calling me weird?" Dominic teased, grinning at Dennis. They didn't know each other well but Dominic was at least passingly familiar with most of Seamus' friends, especially those who spent time at Finnigan's. "Though I'm not sure I count. I don't exactly make it a habit and I'm technically here on business." He moved closer to Dennis, eyeing up the nightmare piece he'd passed earlier for a second time. "You here to support Dean?" he guessed.

"Ophelia's jewellery is beautiful," he said, nodding his general assent to the quality of the show. "Makes me wish I had a woman to gift it to."

Dennis tilted his head and smiled, beginning to freak out slightly at the that he wasn't freaking out in the other man's presence, which Dennis was forced to admit rather neatly fulfilled the usual pattern of freaking out anyway. "Everyone's weird, yeah," he asked by way of reply, a smirk playing on his lips. "So you did the lighting or something," he guessed, looking around with interest.

He pursed his lips at the question, deciding it was probably impolitic to mention that he didn't really like Dean that much - mainly because Seamus was obviously madly in love with him and Dean had never returned the feelings - so he decided to be somewhat more banal in his answer. "I'm here to cover the event for the Prophet," he replied with a nod. "I owe the Arts and Leisure desk a favour and they cashed it in so here I am."

"It is amazing, yeah," he agreed. "I love charmed stuff like that, but I don't think I could pull it off."

Dominic made a small mock-bow. "I did the lighting, and some other arrangements with the space." He looked covetously around the studio, the high ceilings and all that space and bare-brick walls to play with. "If I were a millionaire," he murmured, "I'd buy a building like this and..." And there were too many ways to end that sentence - he couldn't pick just one. "Probably do a different thing with it every week, and invite people to come in and see or do..." He smiled, shrugging slightly. "I need to come back with my camera." He glanced over Dennis, taking in the fit of his clothes. "Speaking of which - no photographer? You'd think they'd send one for an art show."

He nodded, gaze venturing back to the charmed paintings. "I'm tempted to buy something, honestly, but by the looks of it the stuff I like is all beyond my budget." Not that money was a big concern, but he liked to feel like he was getting value for his money and the art world was too beyond his experience for him to judge properly. "I've seen Dean's work at Finnigan's before, but it's nothing like this."

Dennis grinned at the little bow and bowed back, something about the other man's manner put him at ease and made him want to act a bit silly. "Well you did a fantastic job mate, it's absolutely wonderful." He caught the slightly possessive look in the other man's eyes and he huffed in amusement. "You'd do what? Turn it into an amazing charmed sex palace?" He tilted his head at the question and smiled, pulling the camera out of one of his extended pockets. "I told them I'd do it, I'll get a few snaps of the people them come back for some of the art when it's not so busy yeah?"

He lifted his brows and observed the paintings as well. "To be honest, as much as I like a lot of it, I get what you mean. Plus I have no where to put it," he agreed with a slight shrug. "Dean's work is amazing," he agreed with the correct amount of enthusiasm. "The lad knows how to paint a picture. I like the massive one of the guy sculpting."

Ernie & Theodore & OPEN

The show was brilliant. Everywhere Ernie looked, there was something beautiful and interesting and creative, and it was nice to see what Dean and the others had put so much time into. He paused before a piece titled Contemplation, tilting his head to consider the quality of the work done on the painting of a woman sitting on a hill.

"What do you think?" he asked of Theodore. They'd stopped for dinner before the show, at the Dip & Swish again, and Ernie couldn't help but think he could get used to evenings such as these.

Theo drew, but his attempts to push his bad memories out of his head were only scribbles. Walking through the gallery and seeing the work here was astounding and humbling and he found himself entrigued. He was in a good state of mind already, having managed the dinner with Ernie without scaring himself, and Ernie was always good company anyway. He stood close to his date, almost close enough that a movement of his hand would have them holding hands, stopped beside the depiction of a woman on a hill.

He tilted his head side to side, studying the painting, peering close to check out the texture of the paint before he leaned away again. "Beautiful." he commented. "Dean is... this work is incredible." he looked from Ernie and back to the painting. "It looks like it would be a nice place to visit." He couldn't connect to the painting very well though; that kind of thoughtful peace felt out of his reach sometimes. "You like this one the best so far?" he asked.

Ernie nodded. "It reminds me of Mither Tap o' Bennachie, just outside of Aberdeen. It used to be a fort a long, long time ago, and I'd go there with Mum and Dad for picnics. Mum would teach me about the plants and the birds, and Dad would either teach me about the history of wizards in Aberdeen or do some work he'd brought. And usually after we'd eaten, I'd sit up on the rocks and look out over everything, kind of like her in the picture."

He looked over at Theodore in a way that was almost shy, definitely something Ernie usually wasn't. "It's beautiful out there. You should definitely see it one day." I'd love to show you.

The idea of family outings like the one Ernie described were all but myth to Theo but the way Ernie described his experiences drew him in. He watched the painting and it was like he could almost understand what Ernie was talking about. He could definitely imagine Ernie in that girl's place though, perched on top of some high lonely place against a sunset, looking out over it all.

He looked back at Ernie and saw something there that he hadn't really seen on Ernie before, a kind of soft vulnerability that Theo didn't have a name for. "Yeah? I'd like to." He answered the shy look on Ernie's face with his usual shy smile, but his hand moved just a little so his little finger did a little more than brush up against Ernie's. He could pass it off as an accident, he could blame the fact that he had no feeling in that finger so he wasn't aware that he'd just made that move, but he wasn't going to. It was tentative and half-aborted but he'd still made it.

Ernie's breath caught as their little fingers touched. It was something so small, but it focused his entire being on the tiny gesture. He looked at Theodore and it was as if the rest of the world had faded away, leaving only the two of them and a beautiful painting. It had been years since he'd known anyone who could make him feel this way - nervous and shy and bursting with joy and tender feelings - and even though he still cared for Michael, he knew it wasn't meant to be. This, however, was something new, and in as many ways as it felt the same as that rushed, war-torn love affair, it was equally as different and quickly becoming equally as important to Ernie.

He slowly stretched out his hand, seeking out a more solid contact and hoping Theodore would meet him half-way. Every touch with Theodore felt like dancing with a bird who could fly away at the merest stumble or misstep, but every fiber of his being told him that it was worth the patience to see it through.

"I could take you, show you myself." He wanted to show Theodore so many things. "Someday, of course."

Theo turned his hand a little and folded it in against Ernie's like two puzzle pieces meeting, holding hands gingerly but pleased about it. He felt awkward and a bit strange at the way Ernie looked at him but he couldn't really look away, locked in a moment unlike any he'd ever experienced before. It made his heart jump a little and he had to swallow the odd discomfort down.

"I'd love to see it with you." he said, pleased, the high lonely places ones that he tended to be attracted to in any case. He looked back at the painting but didn't let go of Ernie's hand, happy enough to hold onto it even if he did feel a little vulnerable and unsure doing so. Each tiny move forward like this felt like he was dismantling a little of the wall around him that had protected him for so long, and that scared him, but peeking out into the open air also felt good. Like he was normal, like he could actually do this like normal people did.

Ernie's fingers folded over Theodore's and it just felt... right. He returned his attention to the painting with Theodore, a private little enamoured smile upon his face.

"So, are there any we haven't seen, or ones you'd like to revisit?" he asked, perfectly happy to go around the room over and over again as many times as they wishes. Anything to spend a little more time together.

Percy & OPEN
[info]abidingpercy
2014-11-24 03:43 am UTC (link)
While not a connoisseur by any means, Percy could appreciate a fine piece of art. When he was younger, he used to imagine what sorts of pieces he would buy for his office when he became Minister for Magic, though lately the extent of his new pieces tended to be the scribblings of a five year old.

The wonderful thing about art was that it was not only beautiful but held meaning, and as Percy walked around the space, he saw many potential Christmas gifts in front of him. He was considering buying Contemplation as a gift for his mother and Structure for Lucy, but at the moment, he was frozen before Yearning. It spoke to something inside of him, something he wouldn't acknowledge but was there nevertheless: a memory of himself one Christmas night, stood outside the Burrow and looking inside to a dinner he wasn't part of, just moments before Minister Scrimgeour patted him on the shoulder and told him to lead the way inside. He could still feel the mashed parsnips dripping down his cheek.

Cho had been proud of how the pre-event had gone and so far the opening itself seemed to a quiet hit. She loved events like this. As long as everything was set before the doors opened, there was very little running around for her to do, unlike at a wedding (though of course even at events like this there was sometimes a fire to put out - figurative or actual). She had noticed Percy Weasley - whom she'd known a bit in school thanks to her Housemate Penelope being close with him - when he stepped in front of a particular piece and then as he sort of froze there.

While she didn't know him well, concern swept through her and she approached him quietly. "It's quite lovely," she said, her Scottish accent soft with the tone of her voice.

The voice coming from off to Percy's side managed to break through his memories, yet he had difficulty taking his eyes off the painting before him. "It is exquisite," he replied, briefly glancing at the young woman nearby before returning his gaze to the work of art. He'd recognized her, of course, having been one of the judges of the Tri-Wizard Tournament's second task when she had been tied underwater as the person Cedric Diggory would cherish most.

"It's quite funny how a piece of art could evoke such... strong emotions, even when the exact subject matter is not the person's lived experience. What do you see in the piece, Ms. Chang?"

Julian & OPEN

One would have thought that Julian would have gravitated to the nudes, and while he did enjoy them - quite immensely, in fact, and intended on buying a trio - it was another painting entitled Drip that had him captivated. There was something about the woman's cheeky grin combined with the simple realness of her that drew him in. She had beauty and personality, and the artist had captured them both admirably.

He held his drink aloft in a sort of toast to the painting, and nodded.

Dean had been wandering between the two rooms, speaking to a few people he knew, and a few he didn't. He was pleased to see that there was definite interest in everybody's work and while he hadn't checked with Theodora yet, he was fairly sure that some things might sell tonight.

He was walking past Jo, who he'd once worked with in a muggle café before Finnigan's opened, and he occasionally still saw when he visited for coffee. They'd had a lot of fun working on the portrait, which had resulted in a really fun piece. When he saw the man toasting it he couldn't help but go over.

"She'd like that," he said. "Being toasted, I mean," he offered. Clearly hearing Dean she turned her head just enough to wink at him before turning back again.

"Is that so?" Julian replied, glancing at the young man - quite attractive in his own right - and raised an eyebrow. "I think I'd love to meet her one day."

He wondered if the bloke was the artist, though there were a handful whose art was on display and it was difficult to figure out which people could produce which works of art. "Did you paint her?"

"Yeah, she has an appreciation for drinks of all kinds, from water to lethal looking spirits," he said, a smile curling at his lips. Mostly she seemed to mainline coffee like Dean on a painting binge.

He nodded, trying to edge his smile towards pleased rather than a shuffle of ducking his head and avoiding recognition. "Yes. Dean Thomas, pleased to meet you," he said, nodding politely and offering his hand. "Most of the painted pieces heavily involving people are mine." There were of course a few of his pieces which didn't really involve people and he knew a couple of Braith's did, but it was a good generalisation.

"Well, anyone who enjoys a good drink is surely to be a friend of mine." Julian reached out to shake the young man's hand. "Julian Travers, the pleasure is mine."

He nodded back toward Drip, an impressed look upon his face. "You've captured them remarkably well. I saw a few nudes back there that I presume are yours as well. I don't suppose you're looking for models, are you?" he teased with a wink, though if the answer was yes, he'd be more than happy to follow up on the tease.

Dean swallowed slightly at the surname. He had a vague memory of it being connected to the Death Eater trials, but he didn't want to assume anything, especially not in this setting.

"Thank you, and yes, the groups of sketches are all mine. Some of them even have clothes on!" he joked. He swallowed again at the flirting even he couldn't miss. "I'm, um," he paused wondering exactly how to phrase this. "I'm not looking for models right now." at least not the sort you're referring to. "People tend to think it's something it's not anyway," he added with a shrug.

Blaise and Pansy

This wasn't the sort of event that Blaise would have voluntarily made an appearance at. However, Pansy had convinced him to come and show his support of her work. Since she was literally the one person he couldn't say no to, Blaise found himself walking around with a glass he was forcing himself to nurse while Pansy ran off to do whatever duties had to be handled for the official welcome.

Once the opening ceremony was complete, Blaise joined the rest of the crowd in randomly mingling and gave the guise that he was actually looking at the artwork. In all honesty he was just waiting for Pansy to return so he could be the dutiful escort he had been slated as for the night. Finally, he heard the familiar click of her heels. Turning around, just in front of the picture of a man, he watched as she approached. The smile he only gave to her on his face. "I see they've released you for the moment," he semi-joked knowing it was only a matter of time before something on someone pulled her away from him again.
