Charming Cabinet photo charmingcabinet_zpsb46ed3c8.jpg

So the shop bought this cabinet in a lot from an estate sale recently. I'm not sure I was ever told whose it was, but there was a fair amount of nice things with minimal spells on them that are now gracing the shop with some good strong charms, for sale.

This cabinet, however, has thus far resisted most diagnostics.

It also tries to bite if you examine it too closely. I haven't even managed to get into most of the drawers. I have a feeling it's a lot older than it looks, and that it's one of those objects that acquires a... personality of its own over time. You know the sort. Those heirlooms things many families have and don't know what to do with.

So I bought it from the shop and it's in my personal workshop, where I get to start poking at it as soon as a few other small things are out of the way.

I don't recommend touching it if you come by, just saying.

You should burn it

It is a perfectly fine cabinet that just doesn't like bad attitudes and negativity. It reminds me a lot of that Monster Book of Monsters book Flourish and Blotts and way too many of ten or eleven years ago.

It's seeped in bad attitudes and negativity and screaming and should be set on fire.

I'm actually with Tristan here. The thing doesn't act evil, just... overly aggressive. If I have to break some bones figuring it out, well, it won't be the first time.

I have this chest that liked to chase me for the longest time.

Nothing good will come of it. That thing belonged to my father.

Oh really? Interesting! I found a couple of well hidden blood wards just a little while ago, so could I tempt you into coming around sometime and dismantling them? Once those are gone, I might be able to deal with the charms. I don't really want it to lose its full personality -- I have a soft spot for interesting furniture -- but a little less aggressiveness would be great.

I thought I'd cleared the thing when I got rid of it but then I wasn't thinking well at the time but I can come and help if you need my blood, but I've got no love lost for that thing.

I'm sorry for that, but the help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it. And it's not a problem, it's technically my fault that it's being so difficult. Just let me know when's best for you and I'll see if I can come round.

Please let me know when the little rain cloud is coming over. I don't think I can handle his particular brand of melancholy and pity party. I've got my own pity party to attend, after all.

Will do, love.

You don't have a pity party. You're too awesome for that.

Like I've said, the poor thing has probably been mistreated by previous owners. Carlisle likely has a sweet spot somewhere that will calm him down enough for you to properly exam him.

Carlisle. Why do I love that you've named the biting cabinet? Because I do.

I know I'll figure it out eventually.

Because you're just as strange as I am. And it suits him. I think he likes it. He gave what sounded like a purr of approval when I called him by that name earlier. Lord Carlisle Bartholomew Polidor Edmonstone III.

Oh goody, we're strange together!

Purr, growl, whichever! Such a grand name suits him, I think. So long as we treat him with the proper deference, maybe he'll warm to us.

It's always nice not to be alone.

Well, I hadn't planned on deliberately pissing him off. Currently, I mostly just give him a wide berth and a bit of friendly conversation. One sided conversation, sure, but it's friendly!

Anything can help. Remember that chair and foot rest thing at home growing up? A little sweet talking went a long way with it.

Good luck with the cabinet.

Thanks! Once I get the blood wards stripped, I was going to ask if you want to take a look at it too? It's got quite a layering of charms on it, it's terribly interesting.

There's a couple generations of charms work on the thing, at the very least. So you're more than welcome to come take a look and all.

Good luck with it. Magical heirlooms can be a real pain if you're trying to magically reconstruct the room they're in, but of course no one ever wants to get rid of them or reduce the number of charms layered over them.

They can be, but I have a soft spot for that sort of thing. I grew up with enough heirlooms around that had their own ideas about things. So long as I can lower its aggression level, I'll be happy.
