Delivery: Memo to Millicent
Mils,

Saw where Draco Malfoy is doing something or other business related in Europe. You want to see if you can land him as your first client?

I'll be back in the office briefly Tuesday evening and then on my regular schedule Wednesday through Friday. Got the contract.

Rich,

I'll send him an owl before close-of-business. What sort of contacts do we have over that way, so I can draw up a few ideas to take to him?

The newest assistant had a bit of a cultural misunderstanding this morning with the Goan merchant you had him contact. I've smoothed what I can, but I think a word from you wouldn't go amiss, either. Forewarned, forearmed, etc.

Congratulations on the contract!

Mils,

No details, but I'm guessing something potion related. Vienna, Rome, or Kiev in Europe for contacts. If he wants to go further, Beijing, Hong Kong, Mombasa, or Manilla, depending on what he is looking for.

I'll make a call and pay a visit depending. Do you want me to give the 'clients come first' lecture or do you want to handle it?

Contract and ancillary paperwork is headed your way now. Not a big one but it should be long-term.

Thanks for all you do.

Rich

Rich,

My mistake; I'm getting ahead of myself. For some reason, I thought you meant you'd run into him and had a chat, when you said you saw where he was doing business. I did see in the journals that he was opening an apothecary, so I may put him in touch with Vienna right off the bat. Martin's been looking to expand his contracts beyond the Continent... But now I'm running twenty steps ahead of things. I'll let you know what he says.

Unfortunately, it'll need to be a "you need to actually be aware of etiquette and customs if you're going to work for an international company" lecture. It was the most basic thing, and yet. T forced a left-handed handshake, then proceeded to make the poor man even more uncomfortable by inquiring a bit too enthusiastically after his daughters (they're both at Oxford now). Oh, and got snippy when Mr D'Souza ordered whisky at lunch, because apparently he didn't read in the notes that Mr D is from Goa, and therefore Catholic. A visit to Mr D would probably go over better than a call. I've taken him on as my own until you get back tonight, figured out where the snarl with the trade committee is, and the notes will be on your desk.

I'll make up a folder while I wait for the paperwork.

On the good side, G did spectacularly on the conference call to Tokyo. They were very pleased with him.

You did say life wouldn't be boring!

Mils,

Just the usual whinging about getting Malfoy's signature on the bottom line before thing get too far along. Me being the worry wart and wanting everything to go smoothly for you.

Ugh. T is out the door. Don't can him, just send him back next door. Maybe he can handle domestic deals for one of the Senior Partners. Check out the new-hires and see if anyone strikes your fancy. Or I can end of the week.

I'll detour and see Mr. D in person. Time zones are in my favor. Sleep is for the weak.

G may be ready for a go at factor. His wardrobe needs work though. Saville Row? And run him by Legal to make sure his papers are in order.

Here's a thought for you. Is it time for you to take the other desk on my end of the office and start looking for someone to help you out full time?

Rich,

Signature on the bottom line, hard-copy plan in triplicate, and at least one business lunch before the end of the first month if he signs on with us. I don't know who's worrying more, you or me!

Next door has just the right contract for him, I'm told, and he starts tomorrow. While he's getting the details, I'll have his things packed up and taken over in the afternoon. Only natural if you're switching sides, so on, so on, so forth. Won't look at all like he's being sent away. The new crop's still finding their feet, but I think the Malaysian girl you hired on the other week, Delima, might suit. I'll keep an eye on her, and Ewan too. You should have the final say on this one, though.

Hopefully the coffee gods will be kind, and keep you supplied. I don't envy you that visit. Not a bit.

I'll make an appointment for him for next week, if his papers are in order. Antonio's on holiday, but I could send him to Marc?

I think if I assign some of the lighter things to one or two of the best of the new-hires, like following up with the new Prague client, it'd be helpful. Do you get a rush right before the winter hols? If so, I might need to think seriously about saying "yes," but if not, then it can wait until after the New Year.

Mils,

I never did have the contacts to do much in-country business. With any luck you can get our foot in the door.

Well played with Mr. T. Tell Delima I'd like to talk to her Friday afternoon and keep an eye on her. See how she handles the stress.

Marc will be fine. But talk it over with G and see if he'd prefer a less Rowish look. Jacques and Pierre in Paris did some of my Continental cut suits.

More like we never slow down that much. Different countries, different holidays. I'd like to take off the week of Christmas through New Years though. The Greek islands have been calling me since the seasons turned. Plan on getting time off as well. Don't think we have anything major pending then. The service can forward my calls if you can't find someone, but have you considered a blurb in the Finnegan's journal? Worked for me last time.
