Birthday dinner between Susan and Justin
WHO: Justin and Susan
WHEN: Monday November 3rd
WHERE: Justin's flat
WHAT: Justin wanted to make a little something special for Susan, so he's making her dinner.
RATING: PG
STATUS: ongoing

Justin put the pasta in the pot and grinned, stirring them so they wouldn't stick. "I'm glad you could come over." He said happily now putting the veggies in the skillet and mixing them up gently before turning to his friend. He was so happy to be able to be doing this for his friends when they had done it for him so often. A nice little dinner to catch up, eating something else than take out.

"I don't usually have days off during the week but, hey, I'm happy to switch shifts here and there. I possibly sold my soul this time though, I agreed to work this Friday night." He blushed and stirred the pasta and the veggies again. He hoped Seamus wouldn't mind.

Susan watched Justin stir the pasta in the pot and smiled at him. It was really very sweet, this whole cooking for her thing - even if he hadn't learnt to cook very much yet. "Me too," she said warmly. "I haven't seen you in ages, and with the whole moving thing starting up soon, it's nice to relax."

"We all must make sacrifices for the greater good," she said demurely, sipping her wine and shooting him a wicked glance. "Of course I appreciate it though dear." She shot him a questioning look. "What does swapping Friday night mean? Is that when you usually see Sir Grumpsalot then?"

Justin blushed and nodded. "Usually." He checked on the pasta, thinking of how he'd word the rest. "I mean, he's not really grumpy he's just.." He turned to look at her again after he'd stirred the veggies and turned off the heat to let them sit a moment.

"Sometimes he just comes over on Saturday morning, it's not just Friday nights." Sometimes he wishes he wasn't so disappointed not to be able to see him more often. "And, you know, I see him other times too. I'm basically over at Finnigan's at least three times a week." It was no secret that Justin didn't like to be alone and would rather be knitting or reading in a pub than being at home with no one else around.

Susan sipped her wine and nodded thoughtfully, keeping her expression pleasantly neutral. It was just like Justin to see the absolute best in people, even if they were sometimes a little cantankerous - even irascible at times. But that was part of Justin's charm, and really Susan was observant enough to know that Seamus' current bilious temperament had little to do with Justin, or Susan but rather with a rather attractive Frenchwoman and who she was dating. "I suppose so," she replied blandly, her lips quirking into a wicked smile. "The whole prattish demeanour is sort of charming in a weird way I suppose? Very celtic." She tilted her head and gave Justin significant eye-contact, "But then you've always had a thing for Celtic men, haven't you dear?"

She took another long sip of her wine, swirling it around appreciatively. The hope in Justin's eyes was heartening, though privately Susan wondered if it would be Justin or Seamus who would end up a little worse for wear after the inevitable implosion of the relationship. "Well that's good of him," she replied in as neutral a tone as she could muster, privately wondering at how Seamus could always find time for Dean, but apparently found it hard to make time for his not-boyfriend. "And that's good that you go over, we all know that it's hard for you to be by yourself for any protracted length of time."

When Susan made eye-contact, Justin blushed. Not because he wasn't used to it, but rather because he felt discovered. "I do." He said in a whisper. Between the feelings he'd had for Wayne back at school and the way things were going in his heart right now, he had to admit to her that she was right. He did have a type and it included Celtic men.

"Yeah, well. I'd lie if I said I don't enjoy being alone sometimes, but it's just.." He shrugged and grabbed the pot of pasta to drain it. He started getting the plates ready, pasta, a bit of flavored oil and the toppings. "It's quiet in here. And um.." He swallowed and grabbed both plates to bring them over to the table. "There is so much telly I can watch without wanting to gouge my eyes out, you know." And everything he knitted went to charity too, so it wasn't anything wasted really. He didn't want to admit that he could choose any pub, any café, anywhere to do this but Finnigan's. "It feels.. safe at Finnigan's."

Susan tutted to herself as Justin blushed redder than a Gryffindor flag. Justin had always had a definite thing for Wayne during school, and now of course he had a definite thing for Seamus. Normally this would have been fine - apart from the fact that Seamus was in love with Dean - except that Wayne was back in town, and Susan knew it was only a matter of time until that came boiling to a head. Which could probably be followed by Dean and Ophelia breaking up and Seamus and Justin following suit. Really, all they needed was Wayne accidentally getting Ophelia pregnant to create an ironclad little pentagon of romantic woe* for the five of them.

Susan lifted her eyebrows at him and gave him a look. "We all enjoy some 'alone time' every now and then," she replied with finger quotes, sipping her wine and watching him plate up their meals. "What, the quiet puts you off your masturbation," she teased, following him over to the table. She sat down and pulled the plate to her, surreptitiously tasting it before eating it - a combination of Auror training and knowledge of Justin's cooking skills informing her decision to do so. Luckily, she found it perfectly acceptable and began to eat properly. "So you go to Finnigans? I suppose that makes sense, given that you like getting screwed by the publican?"

OOC I may have actually had to draw myself a diagram to work this out. Enjoy:

Justin snorted and shook his head. Trust Susan to slip in something about his sex life in there. Ah well, he did enjoy the occasional one and he shook his head. "No actually, it's after I've done it that the quietness is too much and there are only so many times I'll masturbate before it gets boring, you know." And he'd much rather have sex with someone else, really. "And it's more fun when there is someone to help." He gave a small laugh and smiled when she ate and seemed to find it edible.

"Well," He shifted on his seat and sighed. "There is that, but there is always the fact that something's always going on. So I can very well sit there for a while and order a few drinks while I pass time. I mean.." It wasn't entirely for Seamus either. Though the sight wasn't bad at all. "Even if Seamus and I weren't sleeping together. I like going there and the changes I'll cross paths with someone I know is nice too."

Susan nodded thoughtfully, it was true that there was only so many times you could masturbate in a day - at least if you didn't want to get into the strange stuff. "I guess I can understand," she said with a wry smile. "Of course I grew up with a brother and cousins and parents and what have you, so I always enjoy a bit of silence to read or meditate or research you know?" She smirked, deciding that it was time to make Justin blush again. "In my experience another four people is the perfect number to help," she said with mock seriousness.

She nodded again, glad to be a wall for Justin to bounce off of. "It's nice to have somewhere to go," she replied with a nod. "Of course half the time I'm in a fight with Seamus but you know. What do you think of the new cook then?"

Justin chuckled, almost choking on his mouthful. "Four?" He said, blushing. "I haven't really done anything like that. It's pretty much just.." He realized that it sounded ridiculous of him to just be sleeping with Seamus, especially since they weren't exclusive or anything. He kept hoping that maybe there would be something a little more romantic, but as time went by, he wondered if would ever have the courage to speak up about it.

It took entirely too much time for Justin to reply to the rest of Susan's side of the conversation, a little lost in thought. "Hmm? Romeo? He's amazing. He's teaching me how to cook and I'm eating decently at Finnigan's. Great.."

Then he cocked his head to the side. "What do you two fight about?" He was curious because he and Seamus didn't really fight much. It was pretty easy going.

"Four," Susan agreed with a serious expression. "No really, four allows you to have people coming at you from all angles, pardon the pun, and it's genuinely excellent. Anymore than that and the whole thing tends to break down." She looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to finish his sentence. "It's just what, come on Beyoncé don't leave me hanging."

She focused on eating her food as Justin zoned off into his own thoughts. Idly, she began to make lists in her head - things she needed to pack up, things that she'd need to get out in the house first, how much money she'd need to get out of the bank for this month, and whether it was time to agree to add the extra room into her vault. As it was she nearly missed Justin's reply, looking up at him with a start. "Well that's nice of him," she replied, recovering quickly. "It's nice to have a cook that doesn't throw temper tantrums."

"We fight about all sorts of things," she replied airily. "Mostly because he's a moody git and I'm a grumpy cow. Most recently it's because he's been grumpy and I don't have time for it."

Justin's fork stood still in the air and he stared at Susan, utterly shocked. "Did you just.." He snorted and put his fork down. "You know, that would apply to Ernie a lot more than myself. He's the fabulous one you know." He said, giving her a smirk. "But I can't see how five would work together and I especially do not want the visual image of the 5 of us Hufflepuff blokes together either, woah." He shook his head and blinked.

"It would require an insane amount of trust though." He pondered, tilting his head to the side. "Besides..I've never been with anyone else than Seamus." He said. "Ever." So he wasn't too sure about that whole having sex with more people than one.

He frowned at her explanation about the fighting she was having with Seamus. "He is grumpy sometimes." He agreed with a nod. He never really knew in which mood he was going to get Seamus and he was fine with that. He could deal with it pretty easily by giving him plenty of space.

Susan grinned evilly at the shocked expression on his face. "That's right, I went there," she confirmed, still smirking. "Hmmm so what you're saying to me is that you're more of a Kelly or a Michelle?" She tilted her head and looked at Justin with narrowed eyes for a long moment, before nodding to herself. "Yes I can see it actually. You're definitely more of an 'Heard a Word' as opposed to 'Crazy In Love' - although the mental image of you writhing around à la Beyoncé and Seamus being all Jay-Z is one that I will cherish until my dying day." She rolled her eyes and gave him a disappointed gesture with her fork. "Oh come now, you can't have a five-way with Hufflepuff men! It always ends badly. Hufflepuff men are far too into fairness - all 'oh no, you go down on her first, I'll wait' and nonsense like that. If you're doing something like that you want four Gryffindor or Slytherin men, all of whom want to fuck you. The testosterone levels really add to the experience."

She sat back with a startled expression. "Justin Finch-Fletchley are you telling me that you lost your vee to Seamus," she asked incredulously. "I totally thought you would have lost it to Wayne for sure, maybe Ernie." She paused at the sudden mental image of the three adorably short men involved in a ménage à trois and had to stifle a guffaw. "That would have been a very sweet threesome I'm sure."

"He is," she agreed, taking a long sip of her wine, before lifting it up to appreciate the colour. "I don't mind grumpiness, it's just that occasionally he acts as if he is the only person in the world who's allowed to be upset by things. Or that that scar of his gives him the excuse to be horrible to people, when say Lav has to wear her scars quite literally a lot more openly than he does."

He went through a whole bunch of emotions all at once. "Okay first.. her? Never happening with me. I'm sorry Susan, but, no." There was nothing no one could ever tell him that would make him want to even try to be sexually with a woman. "I doubt you can find 5 men that would want to fuck me, Suze. I managed to find one that shows up once a week and wants nothing.." He stopped there, not really wanting to add to that side of the discussion.

"Yes, I did." He said, his cheeks flushed, then he caught the names afterwards and blinked, shaking his head. "No, no. Nope, Wayne.. Wayne never knew." Justin had never told him and probably never would so having sex with him never, ever would happen. "And Ernie.. I mean.. Drunken snog one night but it's.. no."

Justin shook his head. "I'm in no position to talk about scars, showing or not." Himself had scars no one could see or even know off. Did it make him less scarred?

Susan looked at him with absolute confusion for a moment. "Yes, 'her' dear. As in the fictional female woman in the middle of this fictional Hufflepuff five-way we're discussing? I mean I have had a five-way with some Hufflepuff men for reasons of sexual research of course, but unless you were using Polyjuice then it definitely didn't involve you." She took a moment to eat a bite of her pasta. "You're very lovely dear, but I have a rather obdurate habit of emphatically not screwing my friends or gay men, of which you're both. Besides," she leant across and patted his arm in a sororal fashion, "You're about six inches too short to begin even falling in the range of my type sweetie." She narrowed her eyes at him and snorted in disbelief. "You're perfectly handsome dear, so there'll be none of that thank you very much, and if Seamus is like that then you need to smash him in the bollocks for being a plonker."

"Well, well, well," she said with a pert little laugh. "That's interesting. I think the entire house assumed that you and Wayne would eventually get it on. It's a shame he didn't know though." She ate a bit more of her spaghetti for a moment before choking on it. "You kissed Ernie," she said, after coughing for a moment. "Oh that's hilarious, how did I not know about that? Honestly!"

"That's the point, dear," Susan agreed. "We all have scars! I mean I'm an Auror for Nimue's sake, I have my fair share of scars not to mention the delightful psychological scarring that comes from a vast chunk of one's family being murdered."

"OH!" Justin exclaimed. "I thought you meant the hypothetical fivesome I could be having!" He said, then sighed, shaking his head. "I know you like them tall and sexually attracted to you. I'm kidding you, Love. I mean.. you are utterly awesome." He reached out and took her hand to kiss the top of her fingers.

"It was nothing really," Justin didn't want to make a big deal out of it because it really was. "You know we get. I mean, a bit of wine, lost of flirting and we just tried it out."

"Seamus.. it's complicated." He started, then shook his head again. "And I'm ashamed of how pathetic it makes me sometimes." Justin was really ashamed of how things were turning out for him in this story. "I deal with the moods, I don't mention it and that's how it is." Not only that, but he didn't mention any kind of feelings on his part either.

Susan threw her head back and cackled a little bit. "No no dear, we'd stopped talking about you for half a minute and started talking about me," she teased good naturedly. "I mean it is my birthday, we should be talking about me yeah?" She laughed again to show she was just joking. "I do like them tall, handsome, and attracted to me don't I? Also emotionally available, that's a big one for me apparently." She allowed him to kiss the top of her fingers, and laughed slightly at the scene. "I am awesome right?"

She shook her head and gave him a mock pout. "Really you two and your drunken osculations, tut tut dear," she joked with a smile, though Merlin knew she'd found herself innocently kissing more than one of her friends in the past. "I'm glad it's not a big deal though."

"He is," she agreed absently, before frowning at him in confusion. "What makes you pathetic? Justin you're not pathetic at all, what are you even talking about?" She pushed her empty plate away and stared at Justin for a long moment. "Are you happy with Seamus?"

"Ah well, yeah. You deserve to have a bunch of tall, handsome and horny blokes just for you." He gave her a wink and a smile.

"Nah, it's no big deal. I mean, has it really changed anything?" He asked, raising one eyebrow. "Had I not told you, you wouldn't have noticed, right?" It was nice to see that things had not gotten that awkward with with Ernie after that night and they still flirted like they meant it too, but everything was defined between them.

It got a little tense there for a minute as he considered her question, terribly tempted not to answer it. "Well, um.." He sighed and looked away. "That's the problem." Justin sat back on his chair, no longer holding Susan's hand or holding his fork. "I'm.."

He chewed on his lower lip for a while before he could figure out how to explain this. "I tried to make more time to see Seamus and it worked out kind of okay. We see each other steadily on Fridays." He was happy with that, it was regular and it made him much less desperate for sex. "I don't know how to explain this.. but there is one time he was more snuggly than usual. More, I don't know, more relaxed. He was smiling more, he was in a good mood and.. I don't know, he seemed more affectionate and he said something.." He reached out for his napkin and started to play with the corners without looking at Susan.

"I didn't know what to answer at first, but I did a little later and that's when I realized I had misinterpreted what he had said. I thought he was speaking romantically and he didn't. So that moment.." He sighed in frustration with himself. "So that moment that I considered what he had said to me and figured out that I was okay with it being on the romantic side, then it just.." There was a gesture with his hands and he shrugged, feeling more and more angry with himself.

"And then there was an opening for something more regular at work and I really just kept on a straight face and he comes here on Fridays and.. and sometimes I wish he'd just say he made a mistake and, you know.. want this. But he's not." Justin closed his eyes and wiped his face. "That's the part that's pathetic. I should just let go and I can't because.." Because I rather have that than being alone..

"Thank you," Susan replied with a warm smile. "I'd take one of course, but thank you. You deserve them too of course."

She tilted her head again and levelled him with a extra strong dose of Long Suffering Expression No. 4. "Where's your healers dictionary, I need to go look up the symptoms of an aneurism to see if I had one," she quipped with a cheeky grin. "In all honesty it doesn't bother me who you snog, as long as it's not me, my brother, or someone I'm dating. You two still flirt like you're about to go bump in the night so what would I know yeah?"

She sat back and let his words wash over her, taking in his nervous tics, his lack of eye contact, and the meaning of both what he was saying and not saying. "I know you're frightened of being alone, Justin," she began after he'd finally trailed off. "In fact the thought terrifies you." She reached across the table and grabbed his hand, giving it a squeeze. "And you know I love Seamus, and I love you, and this in no way an indication that I don't, and you are perfectly welcome to discount my words. But I have the weight of very painful personal experience, and my honesty hat is on so I need to say them: you need a relationship, and I worry that Seamus isn't emotionally equipped yet to give you that."

She closed her eyes and squeezed the bridge of her nose for a moment, mentally deciding to leave out any mention of Seamus' attraction for Dean - there was no need to cause any tension in the friend group on top of what there already was. "Seamus has... issues. He constantly worries about his scar, and while you're fantastic for him in the sense that you haven't left him because of it and aren't bothered by it at all... He cares about it, you know?" She took a long sip of her wine finishing it off completely. "He has all these issues of guilt and shame and body horror and they've basically coalesced into this cycle where he pushes people away subconsciously, thus proving that they don't love him, and thus that he's worthless and needs to build up more defenses, with which he then pushes the next person away with." She cracked her neck tiredly, feeling exhausted, but continued. "If you've the patience to bring those walls down, then I think it would be amazing - but I don't want you to get hurt either."

"Yeah, well, it's mostly teasing between Ernie and I." He said with a sigh and a shake of the head. "It's all there is." He gave her a smile.

Justin listened to Susan as she spoke about Seamus and he nodded. "I do my best Susan. I swear I do." He said softly. "I'm trying so hard to be there for him, to hold onto him.. There is just those times where he just.." Justin felt terribly guilty at not being able to be a better friend than that. "I wish he'd talk to me but he doesn't. We're supposed to be friends, but when he's in a mood he doesn't say much."

He swallowed thickly. "I care about him. And sometimes, I wonder if he cares back." He lowered his head in guilt, knowing he probably shouldn't be doubting like that. But he did.

"I get it that he's probably trying to push me away, heck I do it with Ernie sometimes. But I wonder if I can help him. If he'll ever let me." He looked at Susan and he cleared his throat because he wouldn't let her see that it was affecting him.

Susan shook her head for a moment. "That's what I'm saying dear, it's fantastic that you're holding onto him so much but don't lose yourself along the way. Don't let his moods and self-loathing swallow you up, and if you think he doesn't care - make him talk about it. Don't let him off." She shook her head for a moment to collect her thoughts and then continued. "One of Seamus' bits is that he pushes people away and then plays the martyr when they eventually fuck off, and Justin don't let him do it. He may not be in love with you or you with him but he should respect you okay? You're important."

"Anyway," she said, getting up and dragging him into a rough hug. "It's time for me to leave I think. Love yeou dear heart."

Justin hugged her back just as fiercely, burrowing his face in her neck. "Thank you so much for coming though. I know I scare people away with my cooking." he told her as he pulled back. What Susan had said about Seamus was definitely food for though. "Take care, okay?" he asked her even though he knew she was a careful person.
