Who: Penny, Percy and Lucy
What: Halloween.
Where: Penny’s house, Cornwall
When: Oct 31, 6pmish.
Rating: SFW

All these years later and Halloween was still her favourite holiday in the wizarding world. Penny loved the contrast between the muggle world with its stereotypical pointy hats, black cats and hooked noses complete with warts to denote witches and magical folk to those who knew the real magic of the wizarding world and dressed up as its own folklore. On her way back from work, Penny would have sworn she’d seen a babbling cauldron.

With an unplottable location shielding her from everyday guisers, the muggle world she knew so well would have to be kept separate for just a little longer. Penny was expecting her own guests; people she trusted implicitly and whose arrival was the cause for the soft smile playing on her features as she bustled around and set out a bowl full of sweeties nestled beside shiny apples.

Music was on low, jeans settled on her hips and over bare feet as Penny reached for one of the red fruit, able to resist taking a satisfying bite as she lounged against the kitchen counter and waited for them to arrive. Curious to see what the pair looked like and if Lucy had managed to sweet-talk her father into a costume of his own.

Fingers crossed that it was something that involved the Falcons. Now that would be a wager worth winning…

Percy stood at the floo in the Leaky Cauldron with Lucy, about to step in, when she pulled on his robes and looked up at him pleadingly. "You have to do it now, before we get to Aunt Penny's. She needs to see your costume."

He sighed, wondering how he ever let her talk him into these things. The answer was simple - she was his daughter - but it was the principle of the thing. He just wished he'd kept a tighter hold on his books and old photographs.

He pulled out his wand and cast a charm on his robes, transforming them into ones that looked like the Beaubatons Boys' school uniform. Lucy had originally wanted him to wear the same one as her Aunt Fleur had worn, but he'd refused to wear a skirt or dress of any kind. His daughter looked up at him approvingly. "You look just like the pictures, Daddy. Now let's go!" She practically dragged him into the floo, and with a toss of powder, they were on their way to Penelope's home.

He walked through the grate with Lucy in tow, her wings and tail fluttering as she made to 'fly' out of the fireplace. "Look, Aunt Penny! I'm a flying horse!"

The fire blazed to life and out of the flames came familiar voices, the chatter of Lucy as her mouth tried to keep up the impossible task of vocalising her thoughts. Waiting for them was Penny, mouth quirking up to let out a loud chuckle when she saw what Percy was wearing. All she had time to offer him was an arched eyebrow before her attention was caught by Lucy.

“So you are munchkin!,” easy enough to bend slightly so she could look the into a face topped by the trademark Weasley hair before offering a bright grin. “And such a beautiful flying horse you are too! Turn around, let me have a look at you - I’ve never seen a flying horse up close. Promise not to fly away or bite my hand?”
She would watch, taking in the details of Lucys costume from the wonderfully charmed wings that fluttered of their own accord. It was an incredibly intricate piece of charmwork and it appealed to her, the work that had gone into it. Its maker was someone Penny could appreciate.

Eventually her eyes would flick up to take in Percy and his face. “And who is your companion Lucy? He wears such dashing robes that look familiar. Almost familiar hmmm, perhaps from Durmstrang?”

Lucy proudly turned around to show off her wings and tail, then pretended to bite at Penelope's hand before smiling. "I promise, no biting - only pretend." The child then grabbed Penelope's hand and shook her head. "No, silly, Daddy's from Beaubatons, like Auntie Fleur. In the pictures, they came to Hogwarts in carriages carried by winged horses, so I had to carry him here!"

Percy blushed at the insinuation and quickly met Penelope's gaze with a shake of his head. "She has quite an active imagination."

His eyes rapidly took in Penelope, so at home in this lovely house of hers, and lifted an eyebrow in inquiry. "And how dare you, Aunt Penny, not join us in dressing up for the occasion. Isn't that a shame, Lucy?"

Just as he expected, Lucy turned her attention back to Penelope with an assessing eye. Percy grinned in a way that was almost devilish.

A small giggle escaped the older witch at the ‘play-pretend’, reaching over and smoothing her hand over the curtain of hair that was so very different from her own. “From Beauxbatons really?” Curious now as she reached over and set the charm underneath a mini ‘cauldron’ of child-friendly punch to cackle and spit into life.
“How on earth did you manage to carry your dad all the way over here? Winged horses must be very strong.”

It was easy to be this settled, to find comfort in the everyday with people she had genuinely come to care about. “There’s nothing wrong with an active imagination, is there Luce? Nothing wrong with it which is why I went for a costume that ah… Sorry. I don’t have a dad to make dressing up as fun as you do.” A sheepish look crossed her face as she admitted she hadn’t put any effort into a costume, her look only became more exacerbated as she spotted Percy’s look. Trust him to find this amusing.

“I did make toffee apples though, if horses can eat those or even red-headed French wizards.”

Lucy's eyes lit up at the sight of the cauldron. She loved watching the adults around her performing magic and couldn't wait for the day she had a wand of her own. "Oh, I'm very strong," she grinned. "But it's okay, Daddy isn't very heavy. Uncle George says he's a light-weight, too."

That prompted a great rolling of Percy's eyes. Thankfully, Lucy didn't know that her Uncle George had been referring to his tolerance to alcohol and not his actual weight, and even that had been because Percy rarely drank around his family. Had they seen him stumbling out of the Hog's Head every night during that last, terrible year, they might think differently, but he was quite happy to support the misconception.

His face fell a little at the mention of no father to dress up for, and he was once again filled with pride at the strength she showed in the face of her loss. "I think toffee apples are compensation enough for a lack of costume," he offered.

"May I have one, Aunt Penny? Please, please please?" Lucy begged, jumping and jostling Penelope's hand as she did so. Percy hoped she agreed as it would hopefully distract from their other purpose in coming here - the settling of their bet.

“Is he now?” Penny’s attention was caught as she ladled juice into the cups and passed one down to Lucy first and then her dad. “You might want to be careful, telling all your dads secrets. Aren’t you going to leave any for him to keep for himself?” A tilt of her head as she looked them both over, part of her marveling at this side of her friend that still took some getting used to. They were a unit; a family unit that she adored watching and knowing were (albeit a small) part of her life.

The hints that Percy was a light-weight had her smothering a glance, taking a small sip of her cup and setting it down on the countertop. “He doesn’t need to be that strong, only strong enough to be able to lift you and give you piggy back rides.” Her own word choice had been referring to not having a dad to dress up like Lucy did; costume ideas were easy to gloss over when you were dressing for one. Never had she thought though that she would see him in the shiny blue fabric of Beauxbatons. “Careful short stuff,” came the warning as she was jostled and the cup she’d leaned over wobbled precariously. “I don’t want to spill this all over your pretty costume.”

Happy to oblige, Penny leaned over and handed one of the apples down to her friend, and another to her dad. They were sweet, the caramel mostly set and the brunette had already scoffed the leftover mixture earlier in the day. “If you find one you like, do you want to see if you can find a record for us to dance to later? I’ve never seen a winged horse dancing before.” Lucy had free range of her house, the wards set to keep certain rooms offlimits and everything else was safe.
Oh she hadn’t forgotten their bet and the look she gave her friend over her own apple promised just that.

Lucy took the cup with careful fingers, looking curious at the idea that her father might have other secrets. He, on the other hand, looked like he was quite happy keeping his secrets to himself. "Thankfully, tiny ears don't always hear the worst of it."

He watched Penelope and Lucy, how Penny watched over his daughter and wanting to protect her costume. It made him feel warm inside and happy that he had such a friend in their life. There were few people he would trust to care for Lucy and Penny was one of them - hell, he trusted her more than some of his brothers. And watching them together, he knew Penelope would make a wonderful mother some day. "Be careful with your juice, Pumpkin."

He took the proferred apple and looked it over sceptically, as it looked rather sweet. He would eat it either way, if only because Penelope had made it, but he was still mindful of the sugar content. And then Penelope gave him that look, and he knew he was in trouble. He spotted Lucy working on her apple and beginning to wander about the house, looking for some music.

"I would hope she'd choose something classical, but I'm afraid my siblings may have corrupted her taste in music."

It was always fun to push Percy a little past his comfort zone and no matter how old she got it would never get old. At least not for her. Taking a bite of her own apple, teeth cracking against the set caramel before she let out a hum of pleasure. This was something to be savoured more than sweets; good company and the man who was such a part of her life. “Do you think? I’ve been trying to tempt her into becoming a Weird Sisters fan. Everyone’s got to discover good music sometime and classical music whilst nice, isn’t half as much fun to dance around to.”

The sounds of Lucy heading towards the music section were unmistakable. The redheaded girl was tiny, smart and brought up feelings to the surface that made her wonder what it would be like if she had a child of her own. Would she be as good a parent as Percy; that dedicated and considerate?

“Should I ask how your week at works’ been? Have your colleagues been commenting on your sudden improvement in ties?” Oh there was innocence on her face but the truth of the matter was she was enjoying needling him.

He smirked. "You should ask her about the souvenir her godmother brought her the other day. Apparently, Gemma won the raffle date to see the Weird Sisters concert in Japan and got her a shirt. She was quite fond of it." He liked that woman even less than he did Allegra, but at least she'd thought of Lucy. "And I can enjoy other styles, I listen to Celestina Warbeck, do I not?" he added with a quirk of his lips.

He gave Penny a glare for good measure. "Yes, they have been having quite a bit of enjoyment at my expense. It has, however, made my last week in the department interesting. I might even miss it once I'm among Muggles. And you should see the suits Hyperion took me to get fitted for. I cut a rather dashing figure, if I do say so myself."

Lucy came up to them with a record and held it out to Penelope. "This one, please?"

“Hmm Celestina Warbeck, you ecclectic musical maestro you. I’d love to take you to this club my little sister likes to go to. Completely bonkers but very good fun. Theres a room in the back which is a giant sofa and everyone clambers onto it - literally the entire room is a giant sofa or mattress really in soft velour. With little tables studded in so you can let it have a rest and just enjoy. It’s one her favourite places and its good but the music in there is dire.” Thinking back to the club-pub which she had been dragged out to many times when socialising, it brought a flicker of fondness to her face. Yeah, she could picture Percy there. In her world with her family; it was going to be rather odd to share that world but pleasant all the same. Another facet.

“Oh?” flicking her wand to turn the punch down and fish out a bowl of peanuts and place them on the scrubbed pine tabletop, Penny’s attention went to him and took in the stretched, long form of his torso. Her grandfather had always said that the man made the suit but Percy? In muggle suits? “Just how dashing? Should I be jealous of all these muggle women you’ll have chasing after you? Fighting them off with a stick?” Easy enough to joke, to gloss over the complex feelings she had for Lucys mother. Not just for the way the other witch had treated Percy, or the incredible child they’d created and lingering relationship and bonds it brought but something else. A deeper, more personal feeling she was very careful to avoid gazing at for too long.
“I know some great repelling charms..”

Saved by Lucy. Having a look at the record she’d brought through and grinning. “Good choice short stuff. Can you remember how I showed you to pop it on? I’ll come and help you set it up but you can press the button to drop the needle if you’d like.” Letting Lucy lead the way into the next room and busying herself sliding the record onto the turntable and the ceremony of starting music. “Wanna dance?”

"It sounds to me like this club of yours was designed by a Hufflepuff," he teased. "I don't know if it would quite suit me," but for you, "but I might be willing to give it a try, if only to say that I've done so."

Percy snorted even though he knew it was far from becoming, but the idea of him being chased after by any woman let alone a Muggle one was an absurd one. "If I have need of repelling charms, I'll let you know. Thankfully, unless George slips me some sort of love potion, I doubt there will be any need. Though if you don't believe me, you're welcome to come by mine any evening to see for yourself, make certain my suits are woman-proof?"

He followed both ladies into the next room and watched the careful way with which Lucy placed the record on the player. His daughter's face lit up at the question and she held her hands out to Penelope. "Yes, please!" she said excitedly and Percy laughed. He thought back to some of the times he'd watched Penelope dance at Finnigan's and spotted a sheaf of parchment to the side with some quills. He quietly snuck over to grab them, then kept them nearby.

After all, for every dance there had to be a judge.

“Hmm, that sounds like a lovely evening. You’re endearingly skilled at hugging which is a skill you shouldn’t let become rusty. Add in a giant couch and some oddly coloured alcohol drinks then I’d be willing to forgive even the music.” Darker corners would help hide her blushes at the prospect of being a little closer to him in public in a nightclub of all places.

Her own drink was brought to her lips despite a warning to be careful; it wasn’t spiked but the sugar in it could be just as dangerous if she wasn’t entirely careful. “How is he getting on with those potions? Not that you need any but if you’re asking if I’d like to check for myself…,” her eyes flitted to his face, pulse speeding up ever so slightly at her own interpretation of his offer, the way her mind twisted something innocent into the territory she knew to stay far away from. “I’d like that. Make sure any women sticking around are worthy enough of you.”

It was a relief to walk through, setting her cup onto a nearby coaster to take Lucy’s small hands into her own. Twirling the little girl in a sea of turning magical horse and wings as she let out a small laugh of her own. “Can you do this?” Grinning as she performed some of the 70’s dance moves her own mother had taught her - twin fingers drawn across her eyes to dip lower until she was Lucy’s height. Easy, familiar muggle moves before spinning the both of them.

"Now be careful there, we can't let on to too many that I'm skilled at hugging lest I be cornered by wanton huggers in search of a cuddle. Though with enough alcohol, I could enjoy myself immensely I believe." Though he would have to watch for that, lest a heady buzz turn into fortified veritaserum. The last thing he wanted to do was lose a friend over a night's drinking.

He playfully wagged a finger at her. "There will be no buying love potions from my brother. I already watch everything I drink whenever he's around, and sometimes even when he isn't." He did blush at the idea of Penelope guarding him and checking the worthiness of any women around him. It was times such as these that he could fantasize that maybe the past wasn't all in the past, but no, that train had long passed - and perhaps one of these days, if he kept telling himself that, he would finally believe it.

Something caught in Percy's throat as he watched Penelope and Lucy dance. They were both so special to him, and watching them together filled him up with something he couldn't quite identify but that made him want to clear his throat and look away lest he burst with the thought of it. He took up the parchment and quill, wrote the number 10 on the paper, then held it up for the ladies to see.

Lucy was the first to see the parchment and squealed in joy. "Daddy says we're perfect!" she cried, jumping up and down. "Now it's Daddy's turn, please?"

Percy's face froze in panic. Oh bloody hell.

"Not even a teeny weeny love potion? One with a nice peppermint after-taste?” Her voice was sweet but that hint of mischief had crept into it - would she consider buying one? Not in a million years. Even in her novels the use of potions had been little more than a plot device but the main characters had always found something more real than bottled spells and enchantments. Real life didn’t quite work out that way, at least according to what little experience she’d had. “We might need to leave the hug-a-thon for a little bit later.” It was a secret she didn’t want to share with too many people.

Penny’s eyes caught the blush, smiling almost to herself as she danced with Lucy. There were many different types of blush that the redhead used, non-verbal cues that pulled her in and made her long to follow the colour creeping up his cheeks but.. Over the years, she’d become adept at banking down those thoughts, telling herself that there was no need to explore them and with her attention focused on Lucy she did just that. Lost in the dance, moving easily and without self-doubt.

“Hmm yes Lucy. Let’s see what moves your dad has and we can judge how good his moves are?”

He made a production of rolling his eyes but was internally quite amused. "You, woman, are a she-demon, have I told you that lately?"

He held up his hands to ward off the two females intent on making him dance of all things. "We all know quite well that my moves are non-existant, thank you kindly."

Lucy, however, was having none of it. She left Penelope's side to grab at Percy's hand, dragging him over to the 'dance floor'. "Please, Daddy?"

When had he ever been able to say no to her when she begged him like that? Maybe once or twice, but still extremely rarely. He held his free hand out to Penelope. "Perhaps the three of us could dance together, so that I won't be too embarrassed?"

“Not often enough. Who needs words of affection when you can whisper that I’m a she-demon?” Chortling a little as she watched Percy’s daughter advance on her father with the steely look in her eyes. It would take a stronger man than any she knew to be able to resist that please. Her eyes took in the sight of them both; tiny little mannerisms from a tilt of her head to the way she moved reminded her of Percy.
“Practice makes perfect, doesn’t it Luce?” Turning his words back on him.

Penny let herself be led into the small enclosure, grasping both of their hands as she moved along to the music the littlest one had chosen. It was easy, simple and that summed up her relationship with them both. Their generosity in letting her sneak into their family unit and moments like this where for a few heartbeats she could pretend that she belonged. That they were hers.

“You’ve nothing to be embarrassed about. I can guarantee your daughter got all of her very best moves from you with maybe a little help from a sprinkling of magic dust of course.” Fingers curled over his, finding a hint of warmth that she so often lacked., Later, later she might invite them both to drink and eat more but it was easy to get caught up in this moment.

As long as he danced with Penelope and Lucy together, Percy didn't have to worry about steps or being graceful. He could simply follow their lead and enjoy the moment. Lucy's face was overjoyed that he had joined them, and Penelope... her fingers curled over his, prompting a traitorous ball of sensation in his stomach to awaken and remind him of its existence. Despite the voice inside him that said he should let go and save his sanity, he ignored it this once to warmly hold her fingers back.

The music changed and Lucy frowned, suddenly letting go of both Percy and Penelope's hands. "I don't like this one," she said as she went to the turntable and started moving the needle. The music changed again, but where Percy expected Lucy to come back and join them, she instead ran to get the parchment and quill that Percy had put down. "There, and it's your turn now. I'll score you, Daddy and Aunt Penny!"

Percy shook his head incredulously. Sometimes it amazed him that she was his daughter, rather than one of his siblings'. He looked to Penelope and gently squeezed the hand he still held. "Are you willing to risk stepped-on toes, Aunt Penny?" Though perhaps there had been a time when he hadn't been as clumsy on his feet, a time Penelope knew better than almost anyone.

Penny watched with a bemused smile on her face; everything Lucy did, she did with speed. A very special little whirlwind who moved through the room with ease as she sought out the music and began to change it. Easy enough - the needle had been charmed to make it safe as Penny herself had come too close too often to breaking fragile records that she’d taken the step. And yet, even though she’d learned long ago not to try and predict the actions of Percys little girl she was still surprised at the change in direction.

“I ah…,” Not often that she was wrong footed but Penny wasn’t entirely sure how to react. It was a simple request and only her own foibles making it awkward. “For you? I’d risk more than a few squashed toes and my feet can always recover.” A quick glance down at her bare feet before smiling and moving a little closer. “Are you going to give me danger-points Lucy? I’m risking life and limb here!”

Conscious of where she was, with the sweet taste of halloween punch lingering on her tongue, the ward-smith moved closer to her closest friend and offered him a half-smile that curved up her lips. “Lists, scoring and evaluating others? Hmm I wonder just where Lucy got those qualities from?”

Lucy giggled at the request for danger points but shook her head. "No, silly. You can always do what I do and step on Daddy's feet first!" She referred to how she would often place her feet on Percy's for him to 'dance' them around, and Percy smiled in remembrance. He did, however, look down to Penelope's bare feet and looked a little sheepish.

"I promise not to hobble you," he offered.

As she moved closer, he was momentarily at a loss for what to do with his hands. It wasn't that he didn't know, it was just that he was suddenly overtaken by a memory and had to resist the thought of pulling her closer and- no, nothing he would dare, not here, not with Lucy nearby, and not with Penelope. He was thankfully distracted by her words and couldn't help the proud grin that spread over his face. For all the times he wondered where Lucy had inherited a given trait, he was equally pleased to see where she took after him. "I wonder as well," he said, finally taking Penny's hand in a proper dancing hold and reaching for her waist.

You can do this, he said to himself as a familiar scent reached his nose, reminding him of the past and the present all at once, as each held parts of the woman in front of him. He started to move slowly, being careful of where he stepped but still trying his best to resemble an actual dance for Lucy's benefit.

“Promise?” Trusting him, she moved closer as bare, defenceless toes braved the real possibility of being crushed to move a little closer. It was dangerous to be this close to him - when had it become like this? When had she first noticed the speeding of her pulse the closer she moved to him? “Sounds like a plan.”

Manners had her curling her hand around his, rising slightly up so she could look into his eyes and get another whiff of the cologne that was familiar and more enticing than it had any right to be. Finding the beat of the music, Penny moved as if this was an everyday occurrence and her voice was pitched low as she leaned a little forward towards his ear. “You’ve gotten better since 3rd year.” To that first dance and the memories it evoked. “Lucy must be good at keeping you on your toes.”

Following his moves, Penny let herself be led all the while under the watchful eyes of his daughter. The same daughter who Penny shot a glance towards and offered a quizzical eyebrow towards. “How are we doing over there, Lucy? Am I getting hundreds of points for Ravenclaw here or are you going to be a little biased towards your dads house of Gryffindor?”

He winced at the reminder of their first dance, but felt a shiver run up his spine, both at the memory and the feel of her breath against his ear. "I've gotten better at quite a few things since then," he replied, and there was such truth in that statement. There were times when he barely recognized the boy he'd once been... but he had also learned so much about himself and the world since he was thirteen. Not to mention his few romantic ventures since saying goodbye to the beautiful brunette in his arms which had varied his experience considerably.

Lucy scribbled something on the parchment then held it up, showing a large number 10. "10 points to Gryffindor and Ravenclaw!" She grinned widely, thankfully completely ignorant of the memories and thoughts in her father's head.

Percy took in a deep breath and forced himself to let go of Penelope, a part of him fearing that if he didn't do so, he never would. It was the exact same feeling he had when he'd said his last goodbye as her boyfriend so many years ago. "You are as lovely a dancing partner as ever, Penelope." He followed the words up with a semi-proper bow in her direction.
