Seeing as Wingbeat would be opening later, Finnigan's was presenting a more laid back option for Halloween this year. Dominic had magically dimmed all the rooms just a little, and they were lit with magical jack o'lanterns. A cauldron of Honeydukes' finest products waited by the door - charmed to let every customer take exactly one sweet and the bar was serving up themed cocktails, including Black Magic (Calvados, Creme de Mure, lemon juice and honey, warmed), Pumpkin Spiced Beer, Vampire Delight Martini and Departed Spirit Shot. Seamus had even cajoled Romeo into making colcannon and barmbrack for the occasion.

The roost was a little more elaborate, as usual, decorated to resemble a pumpkin field with pumpkin beanbags and cauldrons for apple-bobbing. There were apples strung up on strings from the ceiling, too, for games of snap apple.

The Den and The Corner looked much as they usually did, apart from the jack o'lanterns and a few spare 'cobwebs' in the corners. Everything was ready, and Seamus and Dominic were expecting a busy day.

Bryony and Viktor

Even with all her attention focused on the cauldron, Bryony couldn't help but notice a child running towards her - though she wasn't quick enough to move out of the way. Fortunately, the two of them were saved from disaster by someone with faster reflexes. "It's okay," Bryony said, checking her sketch over before looking up - her eyes widening slightly. Though few people knew it, Bryony was as enthusiastic a quidditch fan as any Canons season-ticket-holder - there was no way she wasn't going to recognise Viktor Krum when she was him. Besides, he was captain of her brother's team.

Bryony got awkwardly to her feet, struggling slightly to free herself from the beanbag. She smiled down at Misha as she smoothed her robes, then glanced back at Viktor, a slight pink tinge to her cheeks. "It's really no problem, Mr Krum." Her brother always loved it when people recognised him, but Marcus found it awkward - so Bryony tried to strike a balance, acknowledging that she knew who he was without fawning over him. Having someone apologise to her for a change, instead of the more usual opposite, seemed to set her at ease. "I should really have expected it, sitting so close to the ground."

She turned her attention back to Misha, belatedly realising what his costume was intended to represent. "I love your costume," she said, smiling more widely. It was something she felt most women would be allowed to say out of simple politeness - but she actually meant it.

Viktor tried to juggle the baby around so he could offer the lady a hand up but the wiggling little snitch just didn't cooperate. At this point he was used to being recognized practically everywhere he went; so long as the fawning or gushing didn't start, he was typically all right with it. He gave her a smile. "Viktor," he said. If she were one of the gushing fangirls, he wouldn't have ans in fact would correct over familiarity in uncomfortable situations.

"You couldn't expect a little gremlin such as this to come along," he said easily. "Most little boys watch where they're going." He directed the playfully toned words to the toddler in his arms, one hand moving to tickle the belly for emphasis. For himself, he could be self conscious; when it came to his kids, he had pretty much none.

The little boy's bright, dark eyes found Bryony's, knowing she was talking to him, and he babbled at her in some combination of English and Romany. Snitch and zoom were recognizable. "English, little one," Viktor corrected and it didn't do one whit of good as his son waved his arms to charm her.

"I admit his costume is a running joke," he said with good humour. "He makes one run after him to catch him, ever since he discovered he has legs." His grin was rueful and amused.

"Viktor," Bryony repeated, though previous experience told her she would likely forget this permission to use his first name. It just didn't come naturally to her for anyone except her closest friends - but she did try. She knew her manners seemed strange to some people and part of moving to London had been to try and integrate more with her own generation, or thereabouts. "I'm Bryony. Actually, you fly with my brother - Rowan." This connection made the familiarity a little easier to justify in her own mind.

Having little experience with such young children, Bryony just nodded politely as Misha babbled and waved his hands, trying to communicate something she couldn't follow. She chuckled at Viktor's comparison between his son - at least, she assumed this was his son - and a snitch. "At least he has you to catch him before he hurts himself," she said.

"Oh, you're his sister!" Viktor's smile grew a bit. He knew Rowan had several of them, but he recalled the name Bryony being mentioned more than once. "It's vonderful to make your acquaintance, Bryony. Your brother is a boon to the team." They might not always agree, and Viktor was occasionally hard on all the players but only so they would all improve. Rowan was a very good Keeper, though.

It was just his Chasers he had to constantly harass, it felt like sometimes.

"I do try. So far we've not damaged ourselves too badly, have we." He jostled the boy in his arms, earning a chortle. He looked up and his eyes caught on the sketchbook in her hand. "Oh, may I ask -- vat are you drawing?"

Bryony smiled more widely at the compliment to her brother. She had only recently seen him play in a professional setting for the first time and she couldn't keep the excitement of it from her expression. The game had been so much faster and more exciting than watching him play with his school friends in the grounds of Pineview Hall. "Thank you," she said. "He spoke very highly of you when you joined the team." Which was a particular compliment from Rowan, who tended to criticise more than he complimented.

Continuing to hold the sketchbook close to her body, Bryony gestured to the cauldron she had been drawing. "The cauldron, and the flowers. It's just a sketch." In just a few moments Viktor had managed to hit on both of Bryony's passions - Quidditch and her art. "I think the decorations in all the rooms are amazing. I want to paint some of the jack o'lanterns downstairs when it gets dark - the colours and the lights will be so atmospheric." Already she could picture it, the glowing orange pumpkins and the light wooden tables on a shadowy background. First, though she would have to ask someone if she were allowed to bring paints in. She wasn't looking forward to that, but she was determined to do it. Like her beloved Impressionists, she preferred to paint from life than from memory.

"Always good to hear I was a welcome addition," Viktor said with a small smile. He had gotten a pretty good reception, though he was certain a few of them regretted it now, with how hard he worked them and how much he pushed for improvement. Rowan seemed to respond well under the additional pressure, though, which said a lot of good things to Viktor.

"Ah, I've never been good at drawing things," he said. "So I haff alvays admired it. One of my sisters, she draws, but only her fashion designs." Which were pretty, most of the time, but not what he normally admired. "Oh, that vould make an excellent painting," he told her. "The atmosphere, it is alvays very ... hm, tantalizing? No, that is not the word. Evocative, that might be it."

He kept an eye on Tsveta as he handed Misha off to her and let the two go pounce a beanbag close by. His lips twitched in amusement at them, but he turned the bulk of his attention back to Bryony. "Are you an artist?" he asked her curiously.

A small smile touched Bryony's face - not mocking, but more amused at her own thought. "Haunting?" she suggested. "Seems appropriate for the holiday, as well as being accurate." Or at least, she thought so. She didn't want the painting to be frightening, but she did think that it would depend on her whether the light was cheerful or more melancholy. She might have to experiment with the exact shades of yellow and cream and orange...

She blushed again, flattered that he apparently thought her good enough to classify as an artist. She was still adjusting to thinking of herself that way - having been only a hobbyist for so long. "Yes," she admitted. "At least, I'm an apprentice right now. At Towpath Studios." She didn't know whether Viktor knew enough to know what that was, but it was worth mentioning in case he did. "You have a sister?" Though she followed Quidditch and did read interviews with players when they were published, she tended to skim over the details of their personal lives - feeling as if it were information she wasn't really entitled to - and focus on their training routines, favoured tactics and stories of the teams they'd played in.

"Very true," he conceded. "But it vill be an interesting effect, da?" No matter which aspect of emotion she chose to focus on. But the mysterious aspect might be most interesting, not that he was an artist of any sort, unless you called the crafts he did with the children art.

"Vonderful!" he told her. "Apprenticeships are very good." Though he wasn't sure precisely what he might have chosen if he hadn't gone into Quidditch; probably Transfiguration, for it had been his strongest and favorite subject aside from flying in school, and the languages he picked up from his classmates. "Oh, da," he said with a nod. "I am the eldest of five. I haff two sisters and two brothers after me." Though it wasn't widely known that they had been one of the reasons he'd accepted flying professionally so early despite being in school.

"I think it will look good," Bryony agreed. She did feel a little guilty about once again abandoning her portrait work, but this was what she was passionate about - both in terms of her own work and that she liked to look at. "I just have to wait until it gets darker, so I started this." She gestured again to the drawing she'd been doing.

Smiling at the coincidence, Bryony said, "I'm the youngest of four. Rowan and then my two sisters. But maybe you knew that." She really had no idea how much - if at all - Rowan might talk about his family. "Are you family all in Bulgaria, still?" She wasn't sure if that was too personal a question. Often she had trouble telling where exactly the line was between prying and letting the conversation flounder. She wished she could turn the topic back to quidditch, but it wasn't something she was supposed to be interested in, and since Viktor was on the team with Rowan any unseemly enthusiasm might be reported back to her family.

"I knew he had sisters, but I vasn't certain how many," he admitted. He knew Rowan but they hadn't had very many conversations on family, aside from those that went about his kids when they were present at a practice or such. "My mother, she is here for the moment, helping me take care of the children." He glanced over to make sure they were still behaving themselves. So far, so good. "Though I need to be looking for a nanny, at some point, so she can have a life again."

He had Amiri, of course, but the elf couldn't be expected to do everything, and there were always sitters, but he really should get a nanny, someone a little more permanent. He couldn't depend on his mother forever, even if she said she was more than happy to do that. "But the others, most of them are still in Bulgaria. One sister, she is often in France. She is making a name for herself in fashion."

If people knew how many wizards and witches were in the fashion industry, it would probably make a lot more sense what came out of those shows. But she modeled and was working on making her own line, and it was possible in large part because Viktor had given her a boost with his money to start with.

"My other sister and one of my brothers, they both play Quidditch now too, starting out and trying to make names for themselves."

Bryony's smile faltered a little. She couldn't help wondering if perhaps Rowan talked about Allegra and Shauna but never mentioned her. They were so accomplished, moving in the right circles of society, the kind of sisters Rowan could be proud of. What was Bryony except the chubby hanger-on? She wasn't even living with the family anymore, so she supposed she couldn't really blame him. She was distracted by her own thoughts when Victor mentioned his mother. "I'd imagine she enjoys it, getting to be so close to her grandchildren," she said, glancing over at the children in question. "And it must be nice for them to have her here, to keep things familiar to them." She couldn't imagine moving to a whole new country at such a young age — she'd found Hogwarts terrifying enough when she was eleven.

"Do you miss Bulgaria?" She didn't know much about the country - she pictured deep pine forests and snow, but had no real idea if that was even correct. Perhaps she was just remembering the uniforms the students from Durmstrang had worn when they came for the Tri-Wizard Tournament. "I suppose London's very different?" She felt like she was repeating herself, always qualifying her thoughts with 'I suppose' or 'I imagine', and she hoped she didn't sound self-centred. It was just that she didn't want to present things as fact that she didn't really know anything about.

She felt some of that tension leave as he mentioned his other siblings played Quidditch. "Oh, that's lovely! Did you grow up all playing together?" she asked, enthusiasm bleeding into her tone despite her usual care not to sound too interested in the sport. "Rowan used to play with his school friends and I would watch them from my window. I-" She caught herself before she admitted that she'd always longed to play too. "That is, my sisters and I enjoyed it so much."

"I do remember that he's mentioned you a few times, though. The others? I wasn't sure if they were two or one or three," he said with a faint smile. The others struck him as the types of society ladies he tended to avoid, though in England they either avoided him if they happened to know his blood-status, something the rest of the world didn't seem to care about, or fawned over him for his fame and success. "My mother has been the best thing in my world these last few years. I do not know vhat I vould haff done without her helping, even before Misha came along. "And it has been great, since coming here. Even though she is used to travel, Tsveta still is adjusting. I do need to find a nanny, eventually, but for now, I am very grateful that my mother is so good to me and them." He knew he was lucky, and he was happy to give her all the credit where credit was due, and more besides.

"I do miss Bulgaria some," he said with a nod. "It is beautiful in places. I think I vill be missing the snow this vinter, but England has its charms, and perhaps we vill be visiting Scotland so they can at least build a snow-thing or two. I think Tsveta would like that." Viktor was, perhaps, a sap when it came to his kids. He also had no problems getting cold and wet and covered in snow for Tsveta's fanciful ideas. "London isn't too different from some of the major cities I haff been in. But long term, it is a bit different to stay in so far, yes. I am still slowly getting to know the area."

Viktor grinned. "Ve did, a bit, though there were never enough brooms to go all around until I vas taken by the national team," he said easily. He wasn't ashamed of his roots, and if people had a problem with the fact he had grown up poor, that was their problem, not his. "Zorka, she is probably about your age? She is probably the better of the two of them as a player. She is a Chaser on the reserves on the Vrasta Vultures, and may be starting soon if one of the current Chasers does not get over his injury." There was pride in his voice as he spoke of his siblings and their accomplishments. He pulled himself back on topic to her words though, not wishing to bore anyone with his stories of home. "It vas always a lot of fun, to play vith them, though. Watching is fun, too, but I always prefered to be playing. My mother, she always say, I could not stay still enough at that age to just watch." His voice was humorous and self deprecating, and he grinned at her.

Bryony was honestly surprised - but pleased - that Rowan should talk about her specifically. Perhaps it was just because she'd moved out of the family home, or perhaps he'd been complaining... If that were the case, Viktor was, at least, too polite to mention it. The way Viktor talked about his family and his childhood seemed to set Bryony at ease. Even though she was used to talking to famous Quidditch stars (her brother and Marcus), she'd never had much to do with one she hadn't known before they became famous - she'd never imagined one would have anything to talk about her with, since she couldn't reveal how closely she followed the sport. But Viktor seemed perfectly willing to keep talking to her while his children played and Bryony felt almost relaxed - as relaxed as she ever really got, anyway.

"How old are Misha and Tsveta?" she asked, trying to pronounce the names the way he had. She wasn't much good at judging ages and wouldn't want to risk getting it wrong. "Scotland usually has snow," she agreed, thinking of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade both being covered in snow for most of her years there. "Not so much by the coast, but you could always go to Hogsmeade." She assumed that Viktor would remember the village from his trip for the Tournament. "Just check when the school's weekends are first. It gets very crowded."

Far from being bored by the details of his sisters, Bryony felt her smile grow to match his. Anyone who could speak with such pride and affection about his siblings was classed as a good person, as far as Bryony was concerned. It reminded her of Marcus, who'd always helped her to fly even when he shouldn't have. "My sisters used to get bored of watching, too," she admitted. "They preferred their own games." Ones which Bryony had never been invited to join - not that she would have wanted to leave her perch or abandon her view of those early Quidditch games. She made a small gesture to her sketch pad. "I suppose I was always more interested in sitting and watching than most people."

"Misha, he is just a bit over one year. Tsveta, she is seven, but already I think she is acting older." Viktor grinned over at his kids, proud regardless. "Yes. I think we might do a few days in Hogsmeade, when I know there is snow, so they can play properly. Every child should get to play in the snow near Christmas. Plus the village was lovely, though I know there's been some changes since I vas there." He nodded. "Good idea. I vill have to do that. Where would I find that out, do you know?"

He nodded again. "Nothing wrong vith watching," he told her. "I haff always done much of that myself, though never able to do anything vith the watching like you." He gestured at her sketchpad and smiled. "My mother, she vould tell you, I vas a very quiet child, alvays off on my own." Shy, or at least not nearly as social as many people. A more retiring soul. He'd learned how to be more outgoing but even now it wasn't always the easiest thing in the world.

"Seven, really?" Bryony would have guessed much younger - but that was perhaps because she was thinking of Viktor as being closer to her brother in age, and Rowan wasn't even married yet. "The WWN does weather reports in the mornings, covering most of the populated wizarding areas," she said, in answer to his question. "I'm sure they'd mention snow in Hogsmeade." She liked to have the radio on while she was working, even if it had started as a habit to cover her desire for her own wireless to use to listen to Quidditch matches.

Bryony smiled, thinking that her own mother would say much the same about her - though she wouldn't mean it as kindly. "I should let you get back to spending your day with your children," she said politely, feeling that she'd taken up rather more of his time than was proper. "But I've enjoyed meeting you very much."

"I haff to admit, I count on my fingers sometimes to make sure I have it right," Viktor said with a small laugh. "She grows so fast. I only vish her father were around to see her grow." Mikhail was missed often, sometimes more by Viktor than by Tsveta these days, as she grew and remembered what felt like a little less every year. "Good to know. I'll make sure to listen." He nodded his gratitude.

"And I, you," Viktor said, giving her a little half bow and a smile. "Feel free to come to practice sometime, I think I can be trusting you not to spy for someone else," he said, a faint note of teasing in his voice. "And the game box is always open as well."
