Seeing as Wingbeat would be opening later, Finnigan's was presenting a more laid back option for Halloween this year. Dominic had magically dimmed all the rooms just a little, and they were lit with magical jack o'lanterns. A cauldron of Honeydukes' finest products waited by the door - charmed to let every customer take exactly one sweet and the bar was serving up themed cocktails, including Black Magic (Calvados, Creme de Mure, lemon juice and honey, warmed), Pumpkin Spiced Beer, Vampire Delight Martini and Departed Spirit Shot. Seamus had even cajoled Romeo into making colcannon and barmbrack for the occasion.

The roost was a little more elaborate, as usual, decorated to resemble a pumpkin field with pumpkin beanbags and cauldrons for apple-bobbing. There were apples strung up on strings from the ceiling, too, for games of snap apple.

The Den and The Corner looked much as they usually did, apart from the jack o'lanterns and a few spare 'cobwebs' in the corners. Everything was ready, and Seamus and Dominic were expecting a busy day.

Theodore loathed Halloween. His dad had celebrated it as Samhain and seemed to both put a lot of emphasis on and take a lot of pleasure in the creation and burning of the bonfire, knowing that this specifically bothered his son. He also liked to perform a lot of Dark magic spells, a lot of which were actually Nordic rather than Celtic and tended toward the necromancy side of things, but the worst part of the holiday was towards dinner where an empty place would be set at the table. Theo would be feeling a bit dizzy already just looking at it by the time he so much as took his seat, but he'd always wake in the morning with the memory of the rest of the night from then on smudged out of his memory, the feeling of a chill and the smell of parma violets all that he'd be left with.

He didn't observe any religion so the day held no significance to him as All Hallows Eve and while he simply wasn't interested in the commercialism of Halloween, the screams and noise and lurid colours unnerved him and put him on edge. The masks were the worst part about it all though, not just the fact that people disguised themselves on purpose, that deception and disfigurement was the whole point of the holiday, but that the masks themselves reminded him too much of his father's previous occupation. He couldn't feel safe and as the day wore on the more tense and apprehensive he became, the worse his already severe paranoia became and the more problematic his hypervigilance was. He wanted to crawl back to the flat that he only had until the weekend to stay in, his rental agreement expiring on Monday, but his therapist knew that this was going to be a problem for him and had given him one action for this holiday: go out.

He'd been tasked with going out and being around people for an hour and a half before going home and if he had to tell the truth he wasn't sure he was going to be able to do it. He'd taken half a calming potion (which in itself had been cheating as he was supposed to do this sans any help) and had cheated yet again by picking the familiar backdrop of Finnigan's to wait out the torturous time. He wasn't supposed to drink but he'd ordered a Firewhiskey on the rocks before he'd retreated to a corner in the Corner and had backed up against a wall on one of the couches, his hands curled around the glass which he stared into, his shoulders tense, trying not to look up everytime someone passed or the door shut or opened or someone said something a little loudly or screamed or shrieked or laughed.

Ten minutes in and he was already fighting with himself not to bolt the hell out of there.

Ernie loved Hallowe'en. He knew it wasn't the biggest holiday around, but it was one that really spoke to him. What other day could someone be a completely different person for 24 hours? Not that Ernie didn't like himself - quite the opposite, as so many would no doubt say - but it allowed him to explore parts of himself he usually didn't get a chance to look at. Not to mention it was always a fun opportunity to flirt with cute blokes - something that he had plentiful chances to do dressed as a Musketeer along with Justin and Wayne.

Yet even with his love of all things Hallowe'en, the crowd at Finnigan's got to him on occasion. It was a little chilly outside and he had no desire to head out to the patio for a breath of cool air, so he decided to head off for The Corner to rest his weary feet. He opened the door and smiled gently, seeing a familiar face in the corner. He could still remember the day a few weeks ago when he'd awoken on his pull-out sofa to greet Theodore, who'd slept in the bed after a night of sleepwalking. It had been so nice to wake up with someone else there, especially someone he'd started thinking of fondly, and it had him wishing that the circumstances might be different and maybe... but Theodore seemed so frail at times, and Ernie didn't even know if he'd like a bloke in a non-platonic way - if he was even in a place where he'd want to like anyone in a non-platonic way.

Bloody hell, even in his thoughts he was rambling. But it was Hallowe'en, right? It was the day to act unlike himself, to take chances and play a part he didn't always play. Maybe, just maybe...

"Well hello there, good sir," he began playfully, putting on his best honourable musketeer act. He pulled off his huge hand and waved it before using it to cover his chest. "I hope you don't mind me saying, but you look rather ravishing this evening. May I have the pleasure of your company this eve?"

Theo had hated himself for putting Ernie out so thoroughly that night. Curiously, it hadn't been the fact that he'd been so helpless around Ernie; he'd thought that this would have bothered him a lot more, but after careful thought he'd come to the conclusion that he seemingly trusted Ernie more than he thought - to be so completely vulnerable to have not only been asleep but to have voluntarily been wandless around him and to have had a part of his subconscious bared before him and to have not immediately withdrawn? He trusted Ernie, even though he didn't really know why and hadn't consciously recognised it. Still, he'd slept there and had still woken Ernie again with nightmares twice more and that bothered him. He'd gatecrashed Ernie's house, turfed him out of his own bed, woken him during the night, disturbed his sleep. Theo had been schooled in manners and his father had literally beaten etiquette into him, albeit a twisted and subservient brand of his own making. Theo had made amends as soon as he could by sending Ernie a gift to apologise, new sheets charmed to stay at the perfect temperature - they were a gift from the gods, doing away with the too hot-too cold-can't put my foot out or clowns will eat me conundrum.

Theo had caught himself thinking about Ernie during the day since then, despite the fact that he had a new job that should have been occupying his mind, and the very real concern about moving out of his flat. It was strange that thinking about Ernie was like taking a little break to have a hot drink in the middle of a freezing cold work day. Theo tried not to think about that. Right then, Theo was just thinking about getting back to his nearly empty not-flat when the voice that he'd been tryng not to remember cut through his reverie, making him jump.

He looked up immediately, the fingers on his good hand curling as his wand could be out in an instant, but going to an unsteady ease when he saw he wasn't in immediate danger. He was flummoxed for a second, taking the whole thing in, not quite sure for a second what he was seeing. He huddled in because he wasn't sure he liked what he was being told there but this was Ernie... he didn't want to spoil the game, even if the idea of playing was making him anxious as well. He deliberately pushed out the chair instead of inviting Ernie to take the seat on the benchseat beside him, the table between them, but it was the chair to the side and not in front of him so he wasn't closing himself off all the way. That and he'd be able to dash to the side and get away a lot easier if he had to, but he wasn't counting that reason as the primary one which was progress, right? Right? He trusted Ernie. He trusted him. He'd been vulnerable but he'd been safe. Fuck it. He pushed the chair further and doing so had made space for Ernie to sit beside him on the benchseat.

"You can take a seat without flattering me." he said, but there was a tone of warning in there because the compliment, however playful and in character it may have been, had twinged a nerve. 'Ravishing' was probably not the best word to have gone with.

Ernie's heart dropped into his stomach when he heard the warning in Theodore's voice. He couldn't figure out why it was there, what he'd said that would have put his friend on guard against him. The one saving grace was that it seemed like Theodore was allowing him to sit next to him.

It was something.

"I can," he agreed, trying to look apologetic but only succeeding in looking like a kicked puppy. "But I like to flatter people, compliment them, let them know I appreciate them and like them. Maybe I just got a little too much in character, though, and I'm sorry if I said something wrong."

Ernie's playfulness vanished and while Theo still felt uneasy and on edge he also felt bad for aiming those feelings at Ernie. He couldn't just forget that though, those fears lodged deep in his psyche and yet to be uprooted. Still, as he'd thought before, there were few people he'd let himself be as vulnerable around as Ernie and fewer still who hadn't taken advantage of him while he'd been in such a state.

Plus, Ernie had said he'd liked him and appreciated him, in a roundabout way, and Theo knew it meant nothing really but he couldn't help feeling a little bit like he was going to blush and that was just ridiculous. He sipped the whiskey and surmised that the rare drink was probably why his face felt a little bit flushed. "No, I'm sorry." he apologised back. "You didn't mean anything by it." He was pretty sure anyway. "You don't have to apologise; this holiday just puts me on edge. Can I get you a drink?" he offered, a peace offering of sorts.

Theodore's words had Ernie feeling like a liar, even if he hadn't lied at all. In theory, he could just let it go and accept a drink and act as if nothing had happened, but a lie of omission was still a lie. The trust between them was too new to betray it, and in the end, if this was going to break their growing friendship, then it would hurt less if it happened now.

"Not right now, thanks," he replied to the offer of a drink. "And I guess I can understand about feeling on edge, and I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable, but I don't want to lie to you either."

He sighed and looked down to where his hands were folded in his lap over his hat. "I did mean something by it, a little bit at least. I like that we're friends now and I don't want to ruin it, but I like you a little more than that too. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have put that on you like that."

Theo didn't take offence to the offer not being taken up, comfortable enough to know that it was just the drink rejected and not his amends, and Ernie was being so understanding the way he tended to be about Theo's strange and often unpredictable triggers up until he mentioned a lie?

Ernie's body language was telling and then he started confessing something that had Theo find his wand in his hand without him truly realising he'd made a move to slip it from his sleeve to rest in the curl of his fingers. He'd moved himself so that he was pressed against the back of the bench seat, facing Ernie as much as he could and there was nothing about his posture that wasn't defensive and he hadn't even realised he'd shifted until he moved to speak and realised that he'd done so, moving on pure animal instinct which he hated himself for doing. He forced himself to relax a little but couldn't bring himself to close the distance between them, his wand hidden but still in his hand, semi-tucked into his sleeve. He didn't want to point his wand at Ernie, but he felt vulnerable now without it, and the realisation that this meant that he now felt threatened by Ernie stung.

He felt a headache growing from between his eyes across to his left temple and he lifted his bad hand to rub at it, his dead finger trembling a little but he couldn't feel it. "What does that mean, what do you mean? What do you want?" he asked, wanting to sound calm and conversational, rational even, but coming out plaintive and as vulnerable as he felt and even a little frightened which was painful.

He didn't know what to think and who knew what Ernie was thinking. He'd been there through the night terrors and sonambulism yes but Theo had no idea what he'd said, if any of it had even made sense and if Ernie had known if anything he had said had been fabrication or flashback. How was he to know if any of Theo's neuroticism stemmed from a war they could all relate to in one way or another or a trauma that had left thick ropey scars deep in his psyche before he'd even started Hogwarts? That Theo had untriggered landmines waiting in places even he didn't think could be dangerous, waiting to take off a leg or an arm or destroy something before it had even begun? Ernie had given him a cheeky little compliment, a harmless little flirt, had ended up being honest about something that was barely a feeling and Theo had drawn his wand on him like he'd had a hand around his throat and a hand up on his thigh. All this against the pounding backdrop in his head of the way Ernie had let him have his bed with no pause, cast the right charms without being asked, taken him home, offered to get his wand, healed him, gotten up for him, hadn't touched him, hadn't touched him, hadn't touched him... Merlin, he didn't want to be like this.

Theodore's reaction was the last thing Ernie had expected. Everything about Theodore screamed don't touch me and defend myself, and Ernie simply couldn't figure out what he had done or said wrong. Should he have not been honest, let the assumption slide? Probably, and if he could take back the words, he would. They were out there, though, and all he could do was go forward - and to deny or avoid the questions now would only tell Theodore he was untrustworthy.

"It means I think you're good-looking and intelligent, I have since the day we met." Ernie looked up from his hands and tried to express his sincerity with every fiber of his being. "And you're the sort of bloke that I wouldn't mind taking out for a romantic dinner one night. But that's just- if you don't want that, if you're not interested, then you don't have to worry because I won't mention it again. What I want is to be your friend, and anything else would just be a bonus, but only if you wanted it too. What you want is more important to me right now."

He wanted to reach out but he didn't. There was only one thing he wanted to know. "What do you want?"

Theo winced visibly because the last thing he wanted was to be thought of as good-looking, to draw any attention to himself that would make people want to look harder and then want to touch, want to claim, own or have. His off-beat heart kicked around off-tempo in his chest in his panic just from the things Ernie was saying that he was finding hard to digest.

All this time, Ernie had seen him and liked him, the way he looked, from the first time they'd met and wanted to what take him out? If Ernie had come up to him and led with asking him out Theo would have declined and left and they would have never spent the time they had together. All this time though and Ernie had felt that way and had just been his friend, restrained to friendship, nothing that had made Theo uncomfortable (nothing that he'd continued doing once he'd realised it had made Theo uncomfortable). More than anything, he'd picked Theo up, taken him home, put him in his own bed where Ernie would have had the perfect opportunity to do anything he wanted if he'd wanted to, but he hadn't. When had what Theo wanted been more important to anyone else over their own needs?

What did he want?

"I don't want to be hurt." He said, the words coming out in a jolt, the 'again' at the end unspoken. He looked a little surprised that he'd even said that. What did he want? He pushed his bad hand up into his hair and anchored it there for a second before dragging it through, sitting back with a sigh, his wand still in hand but not about to throw a hex at anyone anymore. "I don't want this to be so difficult." he said, unable to even look up at Ernie. "But I kind of... I might be interested too." he confessed, even partially to himself. "So it can't help but be difficult."

Seeing Theodore wince one last time felt like someone had filled a bucket full of cold water and dumped it onto the tiny little flickering flame of hope that Ernie had in his heart. He should have known better, really, because for all his bluster, he knew he wasn't as desirable as half the wizards out there, and that was even if Theodore swung that way, which he likely didn't. He was happy being just friends - had been so for weeks now, and would continue to be if he were allowed.

He was ready to get up and go, give Theodore his space and apologize for having interrupted his evening, when the other man spoke. Every word served to fan the little ember that had remained after being doused, bringing it back to a flame that was larger than it had been before. As he was filled with hope, he tried not to let it cloud his view because he wanted to hear and understand everything Theodore was saying. While he was mostly in control of himself, he couldn't stop a smile from spreading across his face.

"Lots of things are difficult, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth it in the end," he offered. "Which is kind of cliche, I know, but it's still true. I don't want to hurt you, I'd do anything to avoid it, and if there's anything I can do to make things easier for you, just say the word."

He clenched his fingers to stop himself from reaching out to Theodore, tempted as he was to make contact but knowing it wouldn't help, not now. This would be difficult if Theodore wanted to pursue his interest... but as Ernie said, it would be worth it.

"You don't even have to make a decision now. I've kind of put my heart on the line here, so take some time to think if you need to. I'll be here when you know what you want to do, and even if you're not as interested as you think you might be, I'll be happy just to be your friend, no matter what."

Theo hadn't expected Ernie to just accept what he'd said, without pushing or asking why or just telling him that he was being ridiculous over a not relationship that hadn't even started yet, but then he hadn't reminded himself that this was Ernie he was speaking to. There was a reason he'd felt the way he had been and hadn't just panicked at the get go, stunned the guy and Apparated out of the situation as he might have otherwise done, especially today. He believed the things that Ernie said, even as he told himself he was being stupid for doing so, even though there was a part of him reminding him how it felt to be held down and bitten and torn apart and that he was putting himself in a position for those exact things to happen again. Ernie wasn't his dad though, Ernie was no animal.

He wasn't expecting to hear Ernie say that his heart was on the line though. He reached out to his glass, turned it and then picked it up to take a sip, using his good hand which showed that his wand wasn't out and at the ready anymore. He put it down and nudged it towards Ernie a little, just in case he needed a little pick me up after all that. "So... what if I am... interested?" he asked, eyes on the tabletop and looking nervous. "What then?"

Ernie hadn't felt threatened by Theodore - perhaps he should have, perhaps he could have feared an overreaction that would have had him on the other end of a hex or a curse. He hadn't, though. In all of their encounters, nothing Theodore had ever done had indicated that he would be willing to hurt Ernie in any way, and so Ernie trusted him. In a roundabout way, it was much like him and many of his patients - there were people in his ward that other people would look at as dangerous and unstable because they acted differently, but in reality would never hurt a fly.

What Theo did with the glass spoke volumes to him - no way could he refuse such a small invitation. He took the glass and lifted it up, touching his lips to the only-just-noticeable condensation that showed where Theodore had sipped, then took a short drink. The firewhiskey burned nicely down his throat and he returned the glass to the table.

"If you're interested, then I'd love to take you out to dinner one night. Anything else would depend on how we both feel and what we're ready for. I'm patient, and I would never push." He placed a hand on the seat between them, curling his fingers over the edge a moment before relaxing his grip and gently turning his hand over. An offer, if Theodore wished to take him up on it, but one that could also be easily refused without hurt feelings.

Theo noticed Ernie deliberately drinking where he'd drank from and that felt strange, a weird but not uncomfortable little swirl that he hadn't felt before, like an unmade smile. This was going to be strange, wasn't it.

Dinner was a bit of a touch and go plan with Theo, who had a turbulent relationship with food as it was, but even he knew that dinner was the lowest common denominator of a mature date and he knew what Ernie was offering with that. It was around people so he wouldn't feel isolated but it would be intimate enough to feel private and personal, quiet enough for them to talk and in a setting relaxed enough to feel conversational instead of interrogational. Public though, he didn't want to embarrass Ernie.

The movement of Ernie's hand on the seat caught his eye and he looked down as it turned over, a little questioning curl of body movement, a query, an opening that could be taken or left. Theo almost couldn't reach out but something about it made him do so, his fingertips just about ghosting over the edge of Ernie's palm and then his index and middle fingers curling around the tips of Ernie's, barely handholding but still something. He tried to pretend that even that small contact didn't have him trembling a little bit because that would have been too embarassing to bear. "I don't like to eat a lot." he warned, agreement to the date hidden in there somewhere even though he still couldn't look Ernie in the face.

Ernie inhaled sharply at the touch of fingertips upon his palm. He held his breath as the fingers moved and felt it in more than just his hand. He was a very tactile person, and in some ways, a touch meant more to him than most words ever could. Touches rarely lied, and in this one he felt a loosening inside his chest, a reassurance, and again, hope.

"I don't mind," he said softly. "Food's good, but the company's better. And if your appetite's bigger than you expect, don't worry about it - I'm a healer, so I can afford it."

He shifted his fingers slightly, just the slightest bit of movement of his against Theodore's with no other purpose than to simply enjoy the touch. "You just let me know what night's good for you, and where you'd like to go, and I'll arrange it all. I just want the chance to get to know you better in a different way."

Theo twitched a little when Ernie's fingers moved against his but they didn't move to grab and he didn't flinch away. Ernie seemed okay with all the ways that Theo was defective, or at least all the ways that Theo could admit for the time being, barely the tip of the iceberg of faults Theo had waiting to ruin any relationship. He wouldn't have used Ernie's money though, even if he'd been starving.

"I don't, I don't really mind. I'm pretty free any evening at the moment and I don't have any preference as to restaurants." He cast a shy look across to Ernie for the first time but couldn't hold it and dropped his gaze to the tabletop between them. "I could do Monday?"

Ernie caught that shy look, only for a moment, and he could tell how much Theodore was trying. He had no idea why this was so difficult for his friend, what hurts lied in his past to make him timid and filled with obvious fear. All he knew was that he wanted to know more, whatever Theo would tell him, and he wanted to bring a smile to his friend's gentle face.

"Monday would be brilliant." Even if it weren't a good day, he'd do everything in his power to make it so. He wanted to recommend Bella's, one of the most exclusive restaurants on Monument Alley (the Maitre D' was the brother of one of his patients and had promised him a table whenever he wished), but his wish to dazzle Theodore was tempered with the knowledge that it might be too much and would just scare him off. "There's a nice little cafe on Diagon, Dip & Swish, that has a nice mix of food. It's mostly booths that come with privacy spells, so it wouldn't be too loud or overwhelming. Would six o'clock be all right?"

Theo hadn't heard of it but then he never dined out and had scant knowledge of any of the restaurants on the area. The cafe sounded good though, especially the privacy spells and the booths - he hated sitting in the middle of a room, especially when he couldn't have his back to a wall, even though the fact that he needed to sit in such a manner made him feel like he'd failed some universal test. "Six sounds perfect." he agreed, trying not to convince himself out of it already. It was just dinner and a chat and Ernie knew enough about him on the surface to not be scared off by him for the duration of one meal; he had picked him up off the floor after all, and if anything else was unearthed during dinner then at least they'd given it a fair go. It wasn't as though this was a marriage proposal, not that Theo thought it would get that far.

Ernie was kind. Theo felt safe with him, and Theo didn't even feel safe when he was on his own. Could he be blamed for wanting more of that? Yes, maybe it was selfish of him because there was no way Ernie would want anymore of his company after discovering what dark traps came with it, but then at least Ernie would be able to see that for himself and not be told by Theo and end up always wondering 'what if' - this was the better way for the both of them.
