RP: After Chess
Who: Ron Weasley, Seamus Finnigan
What: Post-Chess Club drinks
Where: The Roost
When: Thursday evening after Chess Club (backdated)
Rating: NSFW - Language?

Ron had been up into the Roost for a lot of things since Seamus had opened Finnigan's, but he still preferred it the way it was when it was set up for Chess Club, whether it was with a floor-sized board or with tables for several games to be played at once.

Tonight, people drifted away after their matches until it was only Ron and Seamus left. For his part, Ron always liked to stay until the end of the meeting, feeling like it was his responsibility since he ran the club. As for Seamus, Ron sometimes wondered how many hours a day the man spent outside of this building.

"Dunno about you," Ron remarked, stretching his arms over his head to stop feeling so compressed after a day of mostly sitting down, "but I could do with a drink or two."

"Sure," Seamus agreed easily. He paused at the bar, letting Ron go ahead of him to find them a table, and ordered a Dragon Snout ale for Ron and a rum and coke for himself. He made (not for the first time) a mental note to come up with some Halloween cocktails and to draw up a list advertising them. It was one of several things that had been in the back of his mind lately that he hadn't got around to.

Drinks in hand, he joined Ron in The Corner and sank into one of the chairs. "Cheers to good opponents and chess matches well played," he suggested, lifting his glass with one hand while he pushed Ron's towards him with the other. "Think anyone's got the skill to actually challenge you this year?"

Seeing Seamus with the drinks, Ron stopped slouching and sat up to pick up his pint. He could almost hear Hermione telling him to sit up straight. "Cheers," Ron agreed, thinking that this evening had gone well. There had been a couple of surprises this evening, which he always enjoyed.

He laughed, sure that one day the reputation he'd developed was going to come back to bite him in the arse. "Tell you what, give it a couple of years and my niece Lucy'll be wiping the floor with everyone."

It took Seamus a moment to recall which of Ron's brother's Lucy belonged to. "That's Percy's girl, right?" On the whole, he was great with remembering the names of customers, less good at those who weren't yet old enough to officially patronise his establishment. Maybe Dominic's idea of playdates in The Roost would help with that. "The family reputation will be upheld, then?" It did occur to him that if Ron and Hermione ever settled down to have kids, they'd likely be a force to be reckoned with. He kept his mouth shut on that score, though, not certain if a family was even something they'd thought about.

"One of my cousins has a kid," he mused, smiling. "Maybe I should start teaching them, make sure there's an O’Hare around to keep Lucy on her toes."

"Yeah, Percy's girl. She's crazy clever. Even speaks Italian." And with a mother like hers, it was quite possible that one day Lucy would take over the world. If Victoire or Dominique didn't beat her to it, of course.

Ron took a drink, then put down his glass. "Maybe you should. But before you know it, we'll end up with a junior chess league as well." Truth be told, he looked forward to teaching his own kids chess one day, however far in the future that might be.

"Italian?" Seamus couldn't really see how that would be useful for a child so young - and wasn't French more usual, anyway? - but it was none of his business. "Seems like this generation of Weasleys is starting off all girls..." he mused, smiling. "Bit different. Your mam must be ecstatic."

Seamus groaned at the image of a junior chess league, downing a good portion of his drink. It wasn't that he minded having children in the pub - not at all - and in theory the idea wasn't a bad one, but there just wasn't time. "I don't think there are enough hours in the day, or days in the week," he moaned. "I already feel like I'm always trying to catch up."

Ron groaned. "Oh, Mum loves it. Can't wait for more grandchildren." He would have had to be blind not to notice that over the last few years his mother's gaze always went to Hermione's hand whenever she came to the Burrow. It was one of the many things that made Ron nervous about proposing.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to volunteer to run it. I can just about cope with one precocious kid, not a dozen."

Seamus made an expressively sympathetic grimace. "I've escaped that, thank Merlin." Not that his mam would object to grandchildren, he was pretty sure, but she didn't seem to be expecting them - which was good, as Seamus wasn't sure how he felt about the idea of kids.

Having finished his drink, Seamus glanced at Ron's glass. "You fancy another?" One drink wasn't really enough to get him feeling anything, and he definitely felt like he could use more.

"I figure it's going to happen eventually." Ron grinned cheekily. "So I mostly just let her become background noise, y'know?@

Only halfway through his pint, Ron looked at his glass, weighing up the options. Another drink wouldn't hurt. "Yeah, go on then, I won't say no. Same again, thanks." Frowning a little, he studied Seamus more closely. "Are you alright?"

Seamus' smile waved a little bit. "It must be nice," he murmured, more to himself than to Ron, really. "To be so sure of it." All too often Seamus could only foresee a life in which he would continue to live alone - though of course, there was the pub and the community he was helping to build, but that wasn't quite the same. Realising he'd said too much, he flushed and stood up, carrying his glass to the bar and fetching drinks for them both. This time, he bumped his order to a double and reminded himself he was supposed to be having a good time.

He returned to the table and sank back into his seat, leaving Ron's new drink near his current one and tipping back a quarter of his own in one swallow. "Enough about mothers and children," he decided. "We are young men. How're the Cannons doing? Better than the Wasps and the Catapults this year, right?" It had been a while since he checked, but he was pretty sure he'd heard Dean and Bryn complaining about their teams' poor performances.

Ron grinned. "Yeah, we're actually doing well this season. Y'know, good for us, anyway. The Wasps and the Catapults are really making us look good. Which is kind of shitty for their fans, but good for us." He sipped his drink, mind running over the games that had already been played this season. The Cannons didn't have much of a chance of ending the season in the top half of the league, but anything that wasn't the bottom was good.

"How are you feeling about Kenmare's season? Not their best, is it?"

"'Shitty' is about the politest way they might put it," Seamus said - though in all honesty neither Bryn nor Dean had been particularly vehement. "Still, it makes a nice change. Good to shake the league up a bit once in a while." He made a face when Ron asked about the Kestrels. "We started out so well!" he moaned. "And now it feels like we haven't won in ages. Last time I checked we were barely above you lot. No offence." He raised his glass to his lips in mock salute and took a sip, feeling the warmth of the alcohol start to tingle out along his limbs. "Still time, though, right? The Magpies haven't got it locked down."

"That's me," Ron said with a snicker. "Really polite." Ron would have felt sorry for Dean, but after a lifetime of supporting the Cannons, he simply couldn't feel anything but a sense of glee when there were teams ranked below his in the league.

Ron swallowed almost the rest of his first pint. "S'alright. None taken." That was mild, to be honest, but not even years of teasing from his brothers could really remove all the sting.

"It's too early to have anything fix yet. The Prides and the Bats'll give them a run for their money."

Seamus, who had conflicting feelings about the Bats, just shrugged slightly as he finished off his drink in a hurry. He should have bought two, he couldn't be doing with going up and down to the bar all night... Since Ron hadn't touched his second yet, Seamus figured the polite thing to do was wait, even if he didn't really want to. He felt good, right now, and he wanted to feel better and clearly more booze was the answer. "Krum's doing well for the Magpies," he mused, remembering Ron had been a fan at school - at least until he saw Krum and Hermione together. "Whoops. Not so many years ago you'd have walloped me for saying anything positive about that one." He didn't really thing it would be a problem nowadays, but it was hard to really care too much either. Ron and Hermione were together, it was all so silly.

"What I like," he added, moving of at something of a tangent, "is that you stick with the Cannons. Doing well, doing badly. You don't have a back-up team, for the off years..." He chuckled slightly - because for the Cannons nearly every year was an off year. He had enough tact left not to say so. "Not like some people, supporting two teams because they can't make up their minds."

"Nah, not walloped you," Ron said. He grinned. "Maybe just slipped you one of George's sweets." Really, though, he barely even thought about Viktor these days. Sometimes his name was in the papers, but other than that Ron didn't even spare him much in the way of brain power.

"See, I just don't get how people have back-up teams and stuff. Following a certain player, maybe, but I guess I'm just a one-team sort of man."

"I'm sure Hermione will be pleased to hear that," Seamus said, grinning. Though, he didn't really believe quidditch habits matched relationship habits. Dominic might be incapable of sticking to one partner, but Dean was as loyal as any Gryffindor. "I always say I'm going to follow my favourite players when they transfer but..." He shrugged. Somehow, it never happened. He was a Kenmare man through and through.

Ron laughed. "Yeah, I guess I'm a one-Hermione sort of man, too."

Grimacing slightly, he picked up the second pint. "To be honest, I mostly just feel pleased for anyone who transfers from the Cannons. Good for them."
