RP: Hanging Out
Who: Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger
What: Hanging out after work
Where: Harry and Hermione's flat
When: Monday evening
Rating: SFW

Ron hadn't visited Harry and Hermione's as often as usual lately, but he still had his own spot on the couch, which was where he was currently lounging and staring intently at his feet. He wiggled his big toe. Yep, that was definitely a hole in his sock. These socks had lived a long life, but it seemed like they had finally given up the ghost.

His mother had given him plenty of leftovers to bring with him, so that was his version of cooking dinner for his friends tonight. Somehow, despite it being years since Molly had cooked for a full house other than at Christmas, she still sometimes made far too much food. Ron suspected that sometimes she did it on purpose.

"Oi, Harry," he called, finally looking up from his feet. "Want a game of chess?" He grinned. "Reckon I can beat you before Hermione gets home."

Ron made a non-committal noise as Harry insisted that he was better at chess than he used to be. Maybe Harry was better, but Ron a few more tricks over the years too.

He grunted as Buttons decided to land right on his stomach. Then, apparently trying to get comfortable, the cat decided to climb his lanky frame, standing on Ron's shoulders for a moment before leaping back onto his lap and purring loudly. Ron sighed. "Well, I'm stuck here now," he said resignedly, starting to gently stroke Buttons' head.

Ron's brow creased as he frowned. "Actually... can I show you something?" he asked, already attempting to reach what was in the pocket of his jeans without disturbing the cat too much. It seemed like he should finally share after all these months. "Here." He tossed the small ring box at Harry. "What d'you reckon?"

Harry caught the box, opened it and was quiet for a moment. The ring caught the light, and Harry assumed the way it sparkled was a good thing. "Why, Ron. I thought you'd never ask," he said, batting his eyes at Ron.

He'd known this day was coming, eventually, and he was happy for them. There was no doubt in his mind that Hermione would say yes, that they would get married and have babies and...leave him behind. He'd be Uncle Harry, asked to dinner once a month if he was lucky. Pushing away that ridiculous thought, he grinned brightly.

He closed the box and tossed it back to Ron, growing more serious. "You know she's just been waiting for you to ask, right?" It had never been talked about, but Harry knew that was true. "Is that, uh, why you've been. You know. For the last few weeks?" That was as close as Harry could bring himself to ask if there was anything bothering Ron.

Ron's ears turned red. "You always knew I'd make an honest man out of you one day," he tried to joke, but it was hard not to imagine Hermione's expression when she finally saw the ring.

He caught the box with one hand, pausing to take a look at the contents for himself, just like he had done every morning and evening for the last six months. "Er, no." Ron snapped the lid shut and put the box on the arm of the couch. Buttons lifted his head to look at it, then seemed to decide that since the box wasn't actually big enough for him to get into then it wasn't worth his attention. "Nah, I've had this since my birthday. That's been..." Neither Harry or Hermione had really broached the topic of what had been on his mind the last few weeks, or at least not so directly.

"There was a case," he said finally. "Muggle killing. I dunno, it just got to me. Haven't been able to shake it."

Harry batted his eyes again, and pretended to swoon. "All my dreams have come true." The joke fell flat as Ron's mind seemed to be elsewhere, probably on Hermione.

"Your birthday was seven months ago," Harry pointed out, bemused that Ron had had the ring so long and not mentioned it. "You're not afraid she'll say no, are you?" He could understand Ron being nervous over getting the proposal right, but not over Hermione's answer. But then, he'd never gotten close to entertaining marriage with anyone, even Ginny, so what did he know about it?

He remembered the case; it hadn't been his but he knew it had been bad. "Should have been able to put that together myself," he said after a moment. He knew all about not being able to shake a case. Chernoknizhnik’s face still haunted his dreams, and that hadn't been his case either. "Want to talk about it?"

Ron scowled briefly. He knew it had been seven months. "Don't think so. Just hasn't been the right time." The chess player in him wanted to plan out all the possibilities, even the chance that she might say no.

For a long moment, Ron let his hand rest on Buttons's head, feeling the vibrations of his purring. "Y'know, I've been talking about it a lot. Just not with you two, I guess? The victim, she just reminded me of Hermione. Didn't look a bloody thing like her, but still." His hand moved down Buttons's back to the tip of his tail. "I hate talking about it," he said glumly.

"I guess I understand that. I'd guess there's a lot to think about before actually taking that final step." He was just glad that Ron had shared it with him now, though Harry was shit at keeping secrets. He'd keep this one though, because it was important. "You weren't going to do it tonight, were you? Do you need me to clear out?"

Harry understood what Ron meant, and he was relieved that Ron had been talking to someone. Harry'd had a few sessions with the department shrink himself. So he got it. "Yeah, I know. It's okay, Ron. I'm not mad. I'm just...glad to know you're talking to someone." There had been a few cases over the years where the victims had reminded Harry of people he knew, and it was never easy. You had to learn to compartmentalize, and that wasn't as easy as it sounded.

"Nah, not tonight. I just thought if someone else knew then I might do it sooner rather than later, y'know?"

Buttons kneaded Ron's thigh, then settled down again, twisting onto his back so that Ron could stroke his belly. "Such an attention whore," Ron told the cat, though he still obeyed the implicit instruction.

"It's been suggested that I take some time off." Ron frowned, torn between taking up the suggestion and rejecting it as ludicrous. "But I dunno. Sounds stupid. I was gonna talk to Hermione about it tonight."

Harry nodded. "Well, don't wait another seven months, mate. I don't think I can keep a secret that long." But he would, and Ron knew he would, if it came to that.

Time off. It made sense, and Harry was certainly no stranger to being told to take a couple of days to get his head on straight. But he had a feeling that Ron wasn't talking about a couple of days, or even a week. The idea of being at work without Ron wasn't a happy one, but if it was what Ron wanted than Harry would support it.

"I don't think it sounds stupid if it's what you want. Be a good idea to talk to Hermione though."

"It won't be that long," Ron promised.

Once again, Ron made a non-committal noise. He wasn't sure if it was what he wanted, but at the same time, it wouldn't hurt. Ron just didn't know what he would do with himself if he didn't go into the office every day.

"Yeah, well, Hermione should be home in a minute. I'm going to start getting the food ready." Ron tilted his head to attempt to look Buttons in the eye. "If sir will allow me?" He tried to lift the cat, but instead he slipped from Ron's lap as though made of water. "I'll be in the kitchen."
