Under The Sea
Who: Bryn and Lucy
What: Trip to see the mermaid castle
Where: The Mediterranean
When: Saturday
Rating: SFW?

After their tour of the mermaid colony, Bryn and Lucy had separated to get dried and dressed for their dinner on the beach. Lucy, perhaps unlike most women, actually felt less comfortable in the summer dress she'd borrowed than she had in her bikini. Unable to find a hairdryer in the magical community built around the colony, she'd pulled her hair back and let the mostly-dry tendrils at the front curl around her face.

It had obviously taken her longer to get ready than Bryn, because by the time she made it to the table he was already there. Lucy smiled at him, feeling a slight flutter of butterflies. They hadn't really had much chance to talk on their underwater tour, so this was their first opportunity to actually get to know each other. "Hey," she said as she sat down. "This is amazing." The sun was just beginning to set, and there were already candles on the table. "This whole day has been amazing, really." She'd been right to say she'd won the best date, she doubted anything else could have compared.

When he had been cajoled into putting himself on offer for the Fawley Foundation raffle, Bryn had thought that he'd just be lucky to get dinner in London and maybe a polite conversation. But instead of being won by someone old enough to be his mother, he found himself in the company of a petite witch on a trip to the Mediterranean.

For dinner, Bryn had changed into his smartest jeans and a shirt which he had actually ironed for a change. "Hey," he said with a smile. As she sat, he wished that he had got up to pull her chair out, but it was too late now. "Yeah, this day has been like some sort of crazy underwater dream. Bit different here than London, right?"

As soon as she was sat down, Lucy kicked her shoes off and buried her toes in the sand under the table. "You don't get a lot of beaches in London," she agreed. The mermaid colony had been almost a little overwhelming, having so much magic applied to her had felt like being back in school and unable to do for herself. Even though the castle had been gorgeous, she'd found the gills and the webbed feet and hands kind of disconcerting. This, though, this was dinner, on a beach. This she could deal with.

"I wish I could go home and tell my flatmates about today," she added. "Then make them watch The Little Mermaid so I can see if that castle really compares." Though, she supposed the castle had been - if anything - inspiration for the story, not the Disney film. But any excuse to watch a childhood favourite, right? She glanced down at the menu in front of her, noticing the large seafood section, which made sense for a restaurant on the beach. Still, she frowned. "I feel like it would be weird to eat fish right now..."

Bryn picked up the carafe of water that had been left for them, pouring himself a glass and then throwing a questioning look at Lucy to see if she'd like any.

"Is there a talking lobster in that one?" he asked, narrowing his eyes in concentration. "I think I was just a little too old for that one."

He chuckled, having already while he was waiting for her. As he liked to cook so much, it had been an enjoyable way to pass the time. "I don't know about that. Merpeople eat fish. And this close to the sea, you know it's gonna be well lush."

Smiling, Lucy nodded at Bryn's look. Water would be good, after all the swimming. "Yeah, a talking lobster and lots of talking fish which is why..." She shrugged. Maybe it was stupid, and Bryn definitely had a point that the fish here would be really good.

She continued to read the menu, looking for something that didn't remind her of a Disney character. The restaurant had oysters, which she'd never had, but she wasn't sure she'd even like them. "Lemony prawn risotto sounds pretty good, though." It sounded like the kind of thing she liked to make at home - or would, if seafood weren't usually a little out of her budget.

"You missed out, though, on The Little Mermaid," she added. "You're never too old for Disney." If she knew him a little better, she might have suggested he come over and watch it some time.

"Yeah, that sounds nice. I might go for the, uh, fish stew. Or the mussels." He frowned; it was a tough decision. So many delicious-sounding things on the menu, but only so much that he could actually eat. Maybe if he ever went on the round the world trip that he had sort of been saving for the last few years then he would have to come back to this part of the world.

He laughed. "I think is probably true. Unless you're a ten year old boy, in which case you aren't so keen on things with princesses."

"Well, having never been a ten year old boy, I suppose I'll have to trust you on that," she said. "I was a bit of a tomboy, liked to play football with the boys and be on their team for stuck-in-the-mud and that kind of thing - but at home..." She shrugged. "I've got three sisters. We watched a lot of Disney movies with princesses. Though they roped me in to sing the prince's part, if he had one. I liked being Robin Hood best."

A waitress came over to take their orders - in English, for which Lucy was grateful, and after they'd both selected food, Lucy glanced at Bryn. "Do you want something to drink, too? We could share some wine, unless-" She paused. If Bryn lived in the magical world, he probably didn't have to worry about drunk driving. Nor did she, since she didn't even have a car in London.

Bryn smiled. "It was just the one brother for me. I used to rope him into being a prince too. But usually for some sort of heroic quest that I made up, not singing."

"Wine is good," Bryn agreed, nodding. He had been eyeing up the wine list as well earlier, though he wasn't quite as good at matching wine and food as some people were. On the plus side, everything was already paid for as part of the date. "White?"

Lucy grinned. "Oh, I did that too! Though I was a knight, not a prince. My mum was a childminder, so there were always kids to play with." Heroic quests had been a big feature of there imaginary games - much more interesting to Lucy than the houses and families her sisters preferred.

Taking a quick glance at the wine list, Lucy nodded. "Sure. White will go with fish." But beyond that, she had no idea. "Since we're not paying, I feel like we should get something classier than house white - do you know anything about wine?" On her own, Lucy pretty much exclusively ordered house wines or whatever was cheapest. She knew more about beer and cider.

"I tended to be more of a knight when I got to Hogwarts, especially with all those suits of armour hanging around. Sprout caught me once - I can still remember the look on her face."

Bryn winced. "Not as much as I'd like to know." The waitress lightly cleared her throat and thankfully came to their rescue, giving them a couple of suggestions. Bryn was quite glad to be saved from making what might have been some horrible mistake.

He gave Lucy a slightly embarrassed smile once the waitress left them. "I'm always happy to defer to the expert."

Biting her lip, Lucy tried not to smile too obviously - but then gave up. "Sprout was lovely. I spent a lot of time in first year getting lost... She used to come find me at bedtime." At least, until Lucy had more or less relinquished her previous level of independence and taken to following Susan or Ernie around.

After she'd taken their orders and noted what wine they wanted, the waitress left them in peace. "So it sounds like you had at least one muggle parent?" Lucy hazarded. The fact he'd known what Disney movies were was a pretty good sign in that direction, and Lucy didn't really know much about Bryn yet and this seemed a good place to start.

"It was so easy to get lost in that castle, wasn't it?" A few times during first year, Bryn had tried to make a game of it, usually until Ben and Cedric inevitably found him.

Bryn sipped his water. "Sort of. Mam's Muggleborn and when my parents got married and had my older brother, it was the height of the war, so she decided that the family was gonna live as Muggles. We stayed that way until I went off to Hogwarts. How about you?"

"The moving staircases didn't help," Lucy agreed. She'd been lucky enough never to get stuck in one, but she'd seen it happen a few times. Mostly, she'd just had the nerve to jump when she noticed the staircase start to move. "It was a lot to get used to, but Sprout helped with that too."

Lucy nodded, thinking that Bryn's mum's situation didn't sound so different from her own - except that she hadn't had children to worry about, and somehow that made it easier to talk about. "No one in my family is magical, except me. During the war, when they said I couldn't go back, I just... made a life for myself in the muggle world. It was easier, in a lot of ways, but I guess I'm trying the magical thing again now." She shrugged, hoping he wouldn't find that too strange.

Bryn listened carefully, nodding as he took it in. By the time the war had come about, both he and his brother had finished their schooling and his family had integrated themselves back into the wizarding world. Even Bryn's childhood friends had moved on in their lives, heading off to university or into jobs. To them, he was just that slightly weird old friend who'd gone off to boarding school. There hadn't been anything for him to disappear into.

"Makes sense. How's it going for you so far?"

Lucy pursed her lips to one side. "It's weird," she admitted. "I've still got friends here, though I hadn't seen them for years, and they're welcoming me back like I was never away." She smiled at that, tipping her head slightly to one side. "Hufflepuff, right? But in... all the other ways, I guess I don't know where my place is. I have a muggle job, I go to a muggle doctor, I still shop in Angel rather than Diagon Alley." It occurred to Lucy that this was rather heavy conversation for a first date - fortunately she was saved from continuing by the waitress arriving with their food.

Once the waitress had rearranged things on their table to make room for plates and glasses and cutlery, Lucy attempted to turn to topic of the conversation in a more casual direction. "So, I know you work at Finnigan's - but what do you do when you're not working or putting yourself up for charity raffles?"

"When I'm not working at Finnigan's, I also work at Sweet Nothings. Have you been in there? It's the patisserie on Monument Alley. I like to keep busy. And I play guitar. Even do open mic night sometimes." He moved his glass of water to the side as the waitress proceeded to pour their wine. "I think that's me in a nutshell. Don't like to keep idle."

He looked at his food, suddenly ravenous. "Well, this looks lush." Bryn smiled and lifted his wine glass, angling it towards Lucy. "Cheers. Or, as we say in Wales, iechyd da."

"How very Hufflepuff..." Lucy said, smiling, then shaking her head. "No, I know what you mean. I've only got the one job, but I'm notorious for staying late during the week, or for taking work home." Her colleagues were always telling her she should be out, living her life - what wither her being so much younger than them. Honestly, Lucy did have a good social life, she just kept it mostly to weekends.

She lifted her glass to meet Bryn's. "I won't embarrass myself by trying to repeat that. Cheers."
