Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: allegra rosier, character: percy weasley

Who: Percy Weasley & Allegra Rosier (NPC Lucy)
What: Custody handover and telling Allegra about the new job (and hoping he survives the encounter)
Where: Allegra's home
When:Sunday October 19, morning - 10am sharp
Status: Closed / Ongoing

Percy was hunched down in the small salon where the floo resided and was taking a few moments to make certain Lucy was ready to go. She had her favourite shoulder bag, her stuffed hyppogriff, was dressed in a lovely set of lavendar robes with embroidered golden butterflies, and was currently looking at him as if he were the child going away and she the adult.

"I didn't forget anything, Daddy. If I need you, I can floo or send an owl." She leaned forward to kiss his cheek, then grabbed his hand and tried to pull him onto his feet. "Now come on, I want to see Mamma and the kitty!"

He bit his bottom lip, a heaviness settling in his chest as it did whenever he had to bring her to Allegra's. It wasn't that the woman was a bad mother, she was despite her ridiculous prejudices, it was just that it meant going another week before seeing Lucy again. He stood up and smiled for his daughter, then grabbed a handful of floo powder with his free hand. Together, they stepped into the floo and called out their destination, and continued holding each other's hand until they came out the other side.

"Mamma!" Lucy called out happily, practically leaping out of the fireplace.

As rough as she felt considering the amount she had had to drink the night before, nothing would have stopped Allegra from being ready to greet Lucy. She was up, showered and dressed in plenty of time, and the only outward sign of the night before were the slight dark circles under her eyes.

"Luce mia!" she replied just as happily, catching her daughter as she leaped and hugging her tightly. Over Lucy's shoulder she met Percy's eye, offering him a smile, albeit a small one. Whatever she might have thought of this man, it was thanks to him that the sweet little treasure in her arms existed at all.

Setting Lucy back on her feet at last, she crouched slightly to get down to her level. "I love your robes," she said seriously. "They are a wonderful color on you, and I love the butterflies. You are..." She paused, pretending to look flummoxed and lost for words, as their little game went. "Radiant," she declared after a moment, and Lucy giggled.

"You are... magnificent!" the little girl pronounced carefully. She loved this game. It was always nice to hear good things about yourself, and it was a wonderful way to build her vocabulary.

"And Daddy is... distinguished," Allegra ventured, turning her attention back to Percy.

"Daddy is... marvellous!" Lucy chirped, and Allegra hid a smile. She wasn't wrong, she supposed. So his politics were questionable at best and his family weren't exactly high society. He wasn't awful looking. And even if he hadn't been, she wasn't about to slag him off in front of their daughter.

"Well done, those were good words!" she praised Lucy, looking up to see if Percy wanted to join in. She half hoped he wouldn't - she liked that this was her game with Lucy. "Run along now and say hello to Cerberus, he's been missing you dreadfully."

With Lucy out of the room Allegra let herself deflate a little, her fatigue showing a little more. "All right then, out with it," she murmured, keeping half an ear on the next room.

Percy remained quiet in the background as the other two had their moment. He was always one to approve of an expansion of vocabulary, as well as turning the exercise into an esteem-builder. He never wanted his daughter to think herself less than anyone else. He smiled at the final compliment. "They were excellent choices," he agreed, leaving the game for the women.

The moment Lucy left and was out of range, the room seemed to suddenly get dimmer, as if a cloud had passed over the sun outside. He resisted the urge to snap at Allegra, choosing instead to take in a deep breath before he began. She was not going to like this.

"I'll be starting a new job on November 3rd," he began calmly. "It will be roughly the same hours as my current work, but I won't be able to bring Lucy in. I've spoken to my mother and Lucy will stay with her while I am at work, but will be with me the rest of the time. I don't think 8 or so hours a day will be too much at this point in time."

Allegra's nose wrinkled instinctively as she heard that her daughter was, according to Percy, going to spend more time with his horrible mother. "Is there really no better option?" she asked. "There's no one else in your entire rabbit-like family you could leave my daughter with other that that woman?"

It wasn't as if Lucy wouldn't be safe, wouldn't be loved if she spent the time with Molly, but Allegra and Molly had never got along. As horrified as Allegra and her parents had been to find out that she was pregnant by a Weasley, Molly Weasley had been just as horrified to find out that her son had impregnated a Rosier.

"Do you really have no other option?" she asked again, unable to keep her nose from wrinkling, her lip from curling in distaste at his proposed plan.

Unfortunately, her reaction was predictable after five and a half years of hearing the woman's opinion of his family. If only his family could hear the way he defended them to Allegra - but then he'd never hear of them witnessing these discussions and seeing just how much negotiation came into play.

"That woman is my mother and Lucy's grandmother. If there were other options, I would be more than happy to look at them - not because of your worries about my mother's influence, but because that woman has sacrificed her life to raise seven of us and deserves a break. Unfortunately, the rest of my 'muggle-loving family' have lives and jobs of their own, and unlike Muggles, we have no formal education before Hogwarts. She taught me and did a fine job of it, and of course I will have Lucy immediately before and immediately after. She will still get to all of her music lessons, and I will personally ensure that I teach her anything my mother may have missed. This I personally promise you."

He exhaled slowly, trying to keep his temper in check. Merlin, did he have to even tell her where he was going to work? Maybe he could get away without that one little detail.

"That woman also despises me, and how do I know she's not poisoning Lucy against me, filling her head with nonsense?" Allegra shot back. "And if I were you, I wouldn't be so quick to defend her with the "sacrificed her life to raise seven of you". You choose to have seven children, you raise seven children. If it was that big a sacrifice, she could have stopped, couldn't she?"

She stopped herself from saying more, because there was something that had been nagging at the back of her mind for a few weeks now and if she pissed him off any more now, he was far less likely to consider it. "I just don't understand why there are no other options. Can you not put her in daycare? You said yourself your mother deserves a break. Or leave her with me during the day, if you can't have her with you?" She paused. "Though I suppose that's not really fair, because it means I get more time with her..."

She sighed. "All right, fine. Leave her with your mother, but... I would hope that you would speak to her about my preferences regarding Lucy's care and upbringing. Chief among them: I don't want her exposed to that muggle rubbish your kook of a father brings home to tinker with."

"Mum knows the feeling is mutual, but she would never say anything in front of Lucy. She loves her too much to put her in that sort of situation."

Percy's head shook solidly at the idea of Lucy spending the time with Allegra, but thankfully his argument was made for him. There were times when he wondered if the damned woman argued just for the sake of trying to piss him off, particularly seeing as she succeeded all too often. Finally, however, she let it go, but without a parting shot at his father. There were days when he wanted to grab Allegra and drag her into the Muggle world to expose her to it and rid her of this bigotry, if only so it wouldn't accidentally be passed on to Lucy.

"Mum and Dad already know about your feelings on the matter, and though they don't agree, they will abide by them." He sighed. "Now, there was something you wished to discuss with me as well?"

The matter of Lucy staying with Molly sodding Weasley was far from over as far as Allegra was concerned, but she let it go in favor of what she was about to ask of him.

"Well, you're all upset with me now," she said doubtfully. "I don't want to even ask if you're just going to say no automatically, without really thinking about it."

It was going to seem to him like it was coming out of nowhere, but it was something she had been thinking about for a while - ever since Lucy had turned five, even.

He rolled his eyes. Why did it always have to be a dramatic production with her? "I'm not upset, but I am frustrated. If it's something important, then of course I'll hear you out." Especially if it was something that would affect their daughter.

"I've my raffle date later, but I have some time before then. I might be amenable to some tea to calm us down so we can talk over whatever it is you have to say."

Thankful for something to do to give her a moment to think, Allegra went through to the kitchen and put the kettle on to boil.

"It's like this," she said awkwardly, beginning with her back to him as she put the kettle on the stove but turning to face him as she finished the sentence. "I... I never set out to be a mother, but then Lucy happened, and I sort of surprised myself with how much I like being a mother." She bit her lip. Normally when she dealt with Percy she felt in control, haughty and proud, but even she could recognize that what she was about to ask was a big favor.

"And I was thinking, Lu's five now. I've been thinking about it pretty much since her birthday. I'd like her to have a brother or a sister," she said quietly.

Percy followed her a little more slowly, taking a moment to peek into the room where Lucy had gone to snuggle with Cerberus. It was far from his first visit to the house and so he knew his way to certain important rooms, such as the loo, the kitchen, and Lucy's room. When he got there, he took a seat and waited for Allegra to quit beating around the bush.

He knew a day like this would come, always figured that at some point down the line one or both of them would marry and bring new children into the picture. Perhaps a part of him had hoped he would be the first, but he didn't begrudge her that. He only hoped that whoever the man was, he would be good and kind to Lucy - because if he wasn't then he would have the wrath of Percy's family to deal with. "Congratulations," he said, the honesty in the word almost surprising him. "I hadn't known you were seeing anyone and Lucy hasn't mentioned anyone to me. May I ask who he is, what he does, and if you've set a date for the wedding?"

Stiffening slightly at the mention of another man, Allegra winced before straightening up. "Um, that sort of brings us to the crux of the matter," she said. "I would like Lucy to have a brother or sister, and I would like my children to have the same father."

She paused, to let the request sink in, then rolled right ahead. "But you needn't worry. I don't want... a repeat of the night that gave us Lucy. Far from it. I was simply wondering if you would do me the favor of... donating."

Cautiously she met his gaze, hoping he wouldn't just turn her down flat.

"The same father? But who in bloody hell would go along with-" And that's when it hit him that she wasn't the one who'd thought of another man, that had simply been his assumption. And assumption that was apparently very far off from realite, at least at this time.

He reached up to rub the back of his neck, a sure sign of feeling uncomfortable with the situation. "You're saying you want another child, and that you want me to be a father again. And without the... preceding events." He knew he was simply repeating what she had said, but he wanted to be certain he understood, particularly after his initial misunderstanding.

"Why me? Why not simply wait until you meet someone and marry?"

"The same father," Allegra repeated awkwardly.

"Because I don't want the gap between my children to be any greater than it already is. Because you're already Lucy's father, and even if you are a bit of a prat you're a good dad, and I can't fault your parenting, much as I might complain about your family. And... I'm not going to meet someone else and marry, okay?"

She was turning red as she spoke the final words. She wasn't really ready to admit to herself that she wasn't interested in men, so to have to insinuate it to him was galling and she really hoped he would take the hint and not push the issue. That said, this was a bit enough ask that it was inevitable he would have at least a few questions.

He did her the courtesy of listening to each of her points, and being of a logical mind, could see where she was coming from. She sounded quite positive about not meeting someone and marrying, which was her choice of course, but also settled the matter of a future spouse to contend with. Once the logic was processed, that only left the emotion.

Another child? He adored Lucy more than he'd ever thought himself capable of loving another person, but could he do it again? How did Bill and Fleur do it? Was he ready to have another child now? These and more questions started circling in his mind until he was beginning to feel dizzy with the weight of it all.

Even though he'd barely been sitting for a minute, he sprung up and paced to the door, only to immediately turn back straight for the chair. "Please tell me this isn't the sort of thing you expect me to decide right now. Do you have any idea what you're asking me?"

"Do you really have that low an opinion of me? That I would get you here, spring this on you, and expect you to agree and get on with it right this minute?" she asked, her tone exasperated. "Of course you'll have to think about it, if you're not saying no outright, that is."

She hated appearing vulnerable, but as she regarded him, she knew the vulnerability was all over her face. "I know it's a big ask, Prat, but... I did mean it. You're a good father. I want another child, and I want my second child to have the same sort of good daddy that Lucy does."

It was a low blow and she knew it, but she wasn't entirely sorry.

The low blow did indeed hit home. Allegra wasn't one to show her vulnerable side often, and the fact that it was perfectly evident to Percy spoke volumes. He stopped himself from making another pace toward the door, instead leaning back against the counter where he could imprison his hands between it and his back. It kept him from being tempted to do something stupid with his wand.

"I suppose it also helps that we've managed to maintain a civil accord for Lucy's sake for over five years, something that may not happen should you find another... volunteer." Not to mention what sort of other person might volunteer for such a thing and what that might mean for Lucy. He had visions of some large, unshaven former Death Eater coming into Allegra's home and- He shook his head before the thought could germinate further.

"I won't say no outright. Do you need my answer by a particular day, or do I have some luxury of thought in this?"

Allegra's heart caught in her throat. He wasn't saying no, at least, not a flat no. Before she realized what she was doing, she'd taken a few steps forward, embracing him lightly. She pulled away quickly though, her face red. "Thank you," she said, "for even considering it. I just... I was an only child, and I'm a bit of a shit. Part of that is my parents and my upbringing, but I'm convinced another part of it is never really learning to play well with others until I got to Hogwarts, and by that time my temperament was more or less cemented."

Backing away, she made sure to give Percy plenty of space. "Ideally I'd like to know soon," she said. "Perhaps... when you come to get her?"

The "her" in question came bouncing into the room before she had a chance to say anything else, and Allegra scooped her up, hugging her tightly and raining kisses all over her giggling face.

"Can Daddy come to the museum with us?" Lucy asked in Italian. Allegra chose to respond in English, for Percy's benefit - Lucy was still learning that not everyone spoke the same words, all the time.

"I think Daddy has things he needs to do this afternoon. Another time perhaps, Daddy?"

Percy was taken aback by the embrace and only managed to awkwardly pat Allegra's back before he was released. "Perhaps I should remind you that twins run in my family, in case it might affect the question," he said as she gave him his space, and he could finally breathe a little more easily.

He was about to respond about the timeline when Lucy came in to join them. He was thankful that Allegra was teaching her not to speak Italian in front of those like him that didn't know the language. "Another time, indeed," he said before leaning forward to press a kiss against Lucy's cheek.

"Allegra, we'll speak next Sunday about that matter we were discussing. And Pumpkin, be good for Mamma, all right?" Lucy nodded enthusiastically.

It was always hard to leave her, no matter how often they had done this. "All right, have a good Sunday you two." He waved as he headed for the doorway, intent on getting home to do some thinking - and then to cease thinking long before his 'date' with Lisa.

Twins? Allegra hadn't even considered the possibility, and she didn't let herself consider it now, pushing it firmly out of mind. After all, he hadn't said yes yet, though it sounded like he might. She didn't dare get her hopes up, though.

She adjusted Lucy in her arms, sitting her comfortably on one hip. She tended to get a bit like this in the little while right after Lucy was "hers" again - snuggly and slightly clingy, a side effect of not having held her for the week. Thankfully, Lucy hadn't yet grown out of wanting snuggles from Mamma.

"How about we go and see Grandpa Rosier, and Nonna?" she suggested to the little girl. It wasn't as if her parents were the most demonstrative of grandparents, but Allegra was having a little pang of guilt after hearing that Molly had been so gung ho to step in to help Percy with Lucy while he worked. A part of her wondered if her parents were just not that interested in being the Molly and Arthur sort of grandparents... or if it was just that Molly and Arthur were getting to spend more time with her.

"Will Nonna bake scones with me?" Lucy asked. "Grandma bakes scones with me and we put cheese and bacon in them, and then we tell Grandpa Arthur that he can't have any until they're cool but he always sneaks them and then he has to do the hot potato dance, and it's funny."

Allegra stifled a smirk at the idea of her own father "sneaking" scones or doing a "hot potato dance" for the benefit of her daughter, but the picture stuck in her mind. "We can certainly ask Nonna if she fancies doing some baking," she said firmly, intending to have a word with her mother out of Lucy's earshot, encouraging her strongly to forge a better bond with Lucy before Molly Sodding Weasley stole all the Grandma prizes.
