Who: OPEN
What: Finnigan's Dance Club - a quick Salsa lesson and then everyone par-tay!
Where: Finnigan's - The Roost
When: Friday, October 17 - 9pm - 2am
Status: OPEN / Ongoing

Even though several members of the greater wizarding community were off enjoying their dates from the Fawley Foundation fundraiser, that didn't mean that everyone else couldn't have a fun night out. It was Ernie's once-a-month dance lesson, and he'd chosen a simple Salsa for the night. Those who were interested were welcome to join in the short, half-hour group lesson to learn a few steps - and later, Ernie was more than happy to give a few one-on-one lessons to any man or woman interested - but for those who weren't the music was pumping in the room specially designed by Dominic to be fun and flamboyant - something like Ernie himself. Neither the music nor the pouring of drinks would end until last call.

[A/N - Feel free to start your own threads below, and/or start one for a private salsa lesson with Ernie]

Gemma was in the mood to dance and dressed for it. She was excited about her date on Saturday with the lovely Cho Chang - and to see the Weird Sisters of all people! But for tonight, she wanted to relax and destress and maybe take someone home - or at the very least get properly smashed.

She grabbed a gin and tonic at the bar before moving along the edges of the crowd, her body moving instinctively with a musician's grace even when doing something as simple as stepping around a pair of dancers. All she needed was music and she was happy.

Neville grabbed a drink and sighed, happy to finally be out of the office. What he needed was to forget about all that paperwork he needed to be done about that black market cauldron investigation now that they had arrested the culprit.

Even if he didn't have a partner to dance with, only being around people with music was enough for him to feel better.

Dancing was one of those luxuries that Vikesh tended to stay away from because of his faith and his devotion to a simple life... but at heart, it was something he enjoyed and wished he could indulge in more often. Growing up, his family had been friends with some Muggle families from a similar background and he had often watched movies at their home. He'd loved to watch the actors break into dance at the most interesting times, and had even tried to match them sometimes with the other children - at least until his father had looked on him disapprovingly. Most other families weren't as ascetic as his had been, and so things that were allowed in other homes hadn't always been in Vikesh's.

Thus it was rare that he allowed himself to go to clubs of any sort, or when he did, he forced himself to the outside as a challenge to resist temptation. But every now and then he gave in, if only because there was something about the dance that called to him. Of course the clubs weren't exactly home to the sort of dancing he'd grown up loving, but that didn't matter.

He stopped at the bar for a simple glass of water to keep refreshed and went off to the side, watching the dancers with a combination of reticence and envy.

Pansy was in attendance tonight in a professional capacity. One of her clients needed some extra help in the dance department if she was truly going to be the next Celestina Warbeck. Privately Pansy had doubts about that no matter how many dance lessons the young woman had, but she wasn't paid for doubts. She was paid for results.

So dressed in what she considered appropriate dancing wear, she watched the proceedings for a moment before heading to the bar. She ordered a glass of wine, then spotted someone she was very interested in getting to know better, if only to find out if the rumors of his celibacy were true. And, if they were, if she could tempt him out of it. Pansy always did enjoy a challenge.

Drink in hand, she casually wandered towards him. "Mr. Moon, this is quite the departure from the Quiddich field." She smiled at him, but kept a respectable distance between them. For now. "Are you as good on the dance floor as you are on a broom?"

He turned at the sound of his name and was momentarily rendered speechless at the sight of the woman in the very revealing dress. She really was stunning, and Vikesh found himself instinctively standing taller with his shoulders back. He managed to find the self-control to pull his eyes away from her legs and the way the dress hugged her curves, focusing on her face like a good man should. He did, however, swallow very hard.

"I don't usually dance," he replied honestly, though said nothing of what a temptation it often was. "I'm sorry, you seem to know my name, but I don't know yours."

There were few things that Pansy enjoyed more than the obvious appreciation of attractive men. The way his eyes traced over her legs and up her body made her feel powerful, alive with anticipation. And his eyes were very appreciative. Perhaps he wasn't as celibate as the gossip columns made him out to be. She looked forward to finding out.

"That's a shame. I was hoping to find someone...more my height to teach me the dance." She moved closer, tilting her head to the side to study him. "Pansy Parkinson. I make it a point to be familiar with the more...interesting Quidditch players."

He could definitely feel a draw towards her, which despite his personal choices was completely natural. He was surprised, however, by her last words.

"I'm sure you don't mean me. I've barely begun playing, and I doubt I'm interesting next to the likes of Finbar Quigley and Roger Davies." This was something that had him feeling relief on most occasions, as other players were much more likely to get attention than he was.

Pansy couldn't help but smile at his humble statement, finding it charming in a way. False humility was annoying, but she didn't sense any artifice in Vikesh Moon.

"Oh, but darling, I very much mean you. Finbar and Roger are old news in the grand scheme of things, still very much at the top of their game but there's no mystery left." She looked him over, and this time her smile promised more than just friendly conversation. "You, on the other hand, are on the cusp and filled with...potential."

Something about her smile had him feeling like he was standing next to a viper about to strike, but he ignored it, figuring he was simply wary because of the woman's beauty. He offered her a smile of his own. "Thank you. I just hope I can be more asset than hindrance on the pitch. Are you a fan? You're not a reporter, are you?" he asked with a wary eye.

"Oh, I'm sure you could never be anything less than an asset," she said, her smile turning more genuine as amusement took over. She wasn't insulted that he didn't know who she was, he was fairly new among the major players in the field, and she rarely wasted time on the reserves. Unless, in special cases, they were interested.

"No, I'm not a reporter. I'm a partner at Vector Advertising. I work with a number of your colleagues, and have my hands in several other Quidditch pies."

"Well, thank you kindly for that." Even though he did doubt his own abilities at times - he was his own worst critic - it was nice to hear her positive words.

He breathed easily when she explained she was with an advertising agency. He'd already had his fill of reporters in his lifetime and hoped he wouldn't have to deal with them anytime soon. "I'm not familiar with it, but then I'm not really one to do much with sponsorships or the like. But these other pies? What would they be?"

"You're very welcome." She was, for once, completely genuine with both her compliment and the motive behind it. He was one of the up and coming stars of the Quidditch world, and she saw no reason to prevaricate over that fact.

She wasn't surprised that he wasn't familiar with the sponsorships; the new ones rarely were and unless they had management to push them in the right direction, many opportunties were lost.

"Oh, well, there's the usual ones: brooms, alcohol, clothing lines, guest spots on popular radio dramas. Stuff like that."

As she listed items, he winced. He couldn't support alcohol at all, and the others were all profit ventures. He sighed, a little disappointed that this was what quidditch was becoming.

"Because we need to make sure profits only get larger, don't we." He shook his head in disapproval, not of Pansy but of the greed of it all. "No, I don't think I could support ventures like those. There are enough people out there with very little, I refuse to help those who have more than enough."

"Well, Quidditch is a business," Pansy said, not without some sympathy. While she didn't understand the need to constantly give back to charity, she knew she wasn't in the majority there. There were even some causes she believed in, and donated to anonymously, though she didn't see why it had to be at odds with for-profit businesses.

After a moment she said, "There are companies out there who do great things for those in need, and use part of their profits to support worhty causes. I always suggest that my clients do the research before agreeing to any sponsorships, to make sure the businesses ethics line up their own." That wasn't quite true, but it wasn't a lie either. It was just good business, because if anything turned up later that would cause a scandal, it would be on her head.

"And there's always something to be said for using the gifts one has been given to help others, either by bringing voice to a cause or publicly supporting one organization or another."

Pandora and Wayne

Dora was trying very hard to not spiral down the path she knew was before her. The last few weeks had been such good ones, all things considered. She'd kept herself together, she'd socialized, she'd been on a date with someone who gave her butterflies, she'd trained and dueled, and she'd danced. All good things, wonderful things. Things she was proud of and pursued.

And yet at the dance she'd seen Hyperion across the room, and Persephone, and even Phillip. They'd deftly and completely ignored each other, no one evidently wanting to cause any sort of scene. Even fusty Phillip, who sometimes would talk to her, very rarely, ignored her so as not to let their other siblings know. And it stuck with her, how isolated it had felt, how it had sapped a lot of her joy in the dancing and socializing.

It wouldn't go away, either, and she'd had nightmares again. She was due, but it meant she was slowly slipping, and she hated it. She'd tried the last few days to frantically -- inwardly frantic, anyway -- to keep herself together. Tonight was part of that, since she did love dancing so much. Of course, the fact that she was currently leaning against the bar waiting for her whiskey was probably not a great part of the plan.

Despite his renewed pledge, and the one before that, Wayne wasn't too guilty about going to the pub, despite his October 27th being-clean deadline. He'd been pretty good, at least since the Dennis incident (drinking with Justin barely counted), and he didn't have Rhys for another two weeks.

Plus, work had been absolute shit this week, and he'd used most of Friday to catch up on sleep.

So of course, he was bored and jittery, and had turned up at Finnigan's just to see if anything fun was going on. As it turned out, salsa was apparently a thing, and an Ernie thing (which surprised Wayne, even though he suspected it shouldn't have).

But one didn't dance before grabbing something to drink, so he slid up to the bar next to an attractive woman with a look in her eyes he recognized from the mirror.

Wayne flagged down the bartender, ordering a rum and coke.

"So, salsa?" he asked. It wasn't one of his better lines.

Dora tilted back her glass and downed half of it in one easy drink, the unfortunate experience of someone who has gotten totally wasted as a habit for a while. She'd mostly kicked it as a habit, as she worked on her mental health. But she slid every month or two, when the nightmares kicked in, usually, or her stress levels became unbearable.

She only gave the guy who approached the bar a glance, initially. Surprisingly it wasn't a glance that far up -- in her three inch heels, she wasn't quite eye level, but close. It wasn't that she was being dismissive, but rather that she wanted her drink. Which should have been a warning to her, but in her mindset she didn't quite notice the flashing beacon.

She'd dressed nice, transfiguring an old dress into something she felt she could dance in. It'd last the night, at least, she'd always been good at Transfiguration. She didn't dress for anyone else but her tonight, trying to make herself feel better in hopes of patching her feelings for now.

Looking back over, she gave the man a polite smile. "Salsa," she agreed. "I'm not really here for the lesson, though one could always use a refresher, I suppose." She tilted her head. "Here for lessons?"

Wayne smiled back before taking a drink of his rum and coke.

"Mostly just here. The lessons are a surprise," he told her. Now would be a really good time for him to think of something clever to say.

"I feel kind of underdressed for salsa," he admitted. "I'm Wayne." I'm not hitting on you, I promise. Well. Let me get back to you on that.

"Can I get you another?" he asked, gesturing vaguely to her glass.

She grinned a bit, one side a little higher than the other, but not quite a smirk. "Not everyone is dressed up. I just felt like it, I suppose," she said, turning slightly towards him. Perhaps he'd let her pull him out on the floor. She wasn't too picky, so long as he didn't break her toes.

"Hi, Wayne. I'm Dora," she said, offering him her hand automatically. Manners had been instilled in her from a very early age. She glanced him over surreptitiously, judging that he definitely wasn't a pureblood. Not that it mattered, but he didn't read like one.

She contemplated her half empty glass for a moment, years of having hardly any money making her agree more than anything. "Only if you dance with me at least once," she countered.

Wayne shook her hand and nodded. "Very nice to meet you, Dora." His good sense (or what there was of it) reminded him not to ask if she were an explorer. It was probably just short for Isadora or something. Whatever.

"Well, why don't we start with the drink and then you can decide if you want to dance with me or not?" His coordination, while not the best, wasn't terrible. He had the usual rhythm and moves of a stereotypical caucasian male.

"So, what's your poison, then?" he asked, tipping his glass to indicate hers. "I'm in a rum-and-coke mood, myself." It was good, too - Wayne could tell the bar hadn't skimped and gotten bargain-brand cola. The cold crisp taste of the soda mixed with the warmth the rum gave him was, at this moment, perfect.

"Hmmm." She thought it over a minute and then nodded. She couldn't see the harm in another drink before dancing. She had several more before her coordinatjon started to slip, at least, she knew from experience.

She held up her glass and smirked faintly. "Firewhiskey," she said succinctly. "You ever had it?" It was unique to the wizarding world and not everyone liked it or could handle it. "But I'll try what you have. Rum is always good." Better than tequila, certain. That was an evil she didn't want to revisit.

Wayne chuckled to himself. Had he ever had Firewhiskey. That's a good one.

"I'm gonna guess you grew up in the magical world, then?" he asked, summoning the bartender for a rum and coke for Dora.

"I'd advise against tequila. It's very very good until it suddenly is the worst thing humanity has ever achieved. Not sure I know anyone without a terrible tequila story."

He had a few under his belt, to be sure.

"What's your story?" he asked, trying to go for casual. "Feel free to make something up. I'm pretty gullible."

"What gave me away?" Dora said dryly. It usually was obvious, after talking to her, and she knew it. She was working on it, but she grew up exclusively in this world and that would never go away.

She snorted. "I've learned my lesson with tequila," she said. "So no thank you. I don't particularly like it anyway." She would taste it for days afterward. She'd much rather stick with whiskey and screw that. "Rum is a good, solid liquor that doesn't kill you for the week after. At least not as badly." And wow she sounded like a lush, and she really wasn't.

She downed the rest of her whiskey in another gulp, so she'd have room for the rum-and-coke he was ordering her. It made sense, hey. She leaned against the bar, at ease if only because it was something to do, talk to this guy before she danced. "My story, huh?" Her lips turned up faintly, giving her a faintly mysterious Mona-Lisa-esque look. "Daughter of tradition, disowned for being too adaptable, duelist, former queen of the world, and currently in want of a dance partner."

Wayne's eyebrows didn't really shoot up, but they did rise. He hadn't expected something right out of a book he'd actually read, for once.

"Well, I could be that dance partner. If you don't mind me, of course," he told her. If she didn't want to know about him, he wasn't inclined to tell her much. Although, he thought, information traded in good faith helped build trust.

"I figure everyone's disowned by somebody at some point along the line." Not that that had happened to him, precisely, but he knew enough about his father to know he'd never come back to meet Wayne.

Dora was stunning, and quite out of his league, but what drew him to her was...unless he was mistaken, their ghosts were similar. Wayne finished off his drink (there'd been a lot of ice, he figured), and relished the warmth it gave him inside, like a comforting glowing fire.

She gave him a bigger smile. "And what about you, before I dance with you, tell me your story. And I'm not terribly gullible, but you can pretend I am anyway."

Dora sipped at her new drink when it came. Tasty, indeed, though not with the same burn as the whiskey. Probably best that way, she mused, and sweeter tasting like this. "Hm. I don't know that I'm blasted off the tree, honestly. No one's bothered to tell me, you see. But yes. Disowning does happen." And why was she talking about it to a stranger, she didn't know, she never talked about it to anyone, not even Mils. She might with Tristan but... just.

Eh. She'd blame it on the alcohol. She took a large swallow of her drink just to make sure she had a good excuse.
