Why have I never spent time in Muggle libraries before? They have so many books on things I've never thought to ask in Muggle Studies. And they have computing devices with access to the 'internet' which has even more information from all over the world in every language imaginable. There must be some way for this technology to function in a magical environment.

After a few hours' exploration around other countries of the Commonwealth, I think I would like to visit Ottawa some day. It looks quite charming, and the Canadian parliament buildings are quite frankly beautiful in architecture. Not to mention it has some excellent resources to use in my 'alternate Muggle identity'.

[Private to Oliver and Penelope]

All right, all my ducks are in a row. I've done the research. I've spoken with Mum and she's ecstatic at the chance to spend more time with Lucy. I'm going to speak with Kingsley tomorrow and give him the news that I'm taking the position.

I spoke with Lucy tonight and she was torn, but I think in the end she understood. This is going to tear me apart, not being able to be with her during weekdays, but I think it's for the best in the end. I suppose I need to learn to let her go a little at the beginning so it isn't as hard when she's eleven and going to Hogwarts.

Merlin, I'm really doing this, aren't I. Work as a Muggle. Have I gone mad?

If you figure out the Internet and magic thing, let me know!

I will. I'm beginning to realize what a tragedy it really is.

Why didn't you tell me you were interested in the wonders of Muggle libraries? I could have introduced you a long time ago.

I've never had much occasion to venture there until recently and I am quite sad that I never did before. I would have welcomed the introduction. Have you ever tried to take Ron? I would like to see him try to win over the computer in chess.

I'm glad you have finally taken the opportunity to expand your horizons. No, I've never taken Ron to a Muggle library. I had a tough enough time trying to convince him he needed to be in the Hogwart's libray.

Canada is a very nice place. Lots of beautiful scenery.

Have you been? Are the people as friendly as they are reputed to be?

I've been for a few games and I worked with a few Quidditch camps up there. There's a lot of space they can use for the games there. I never had any trouble with the people there either, though I'll tell you those 'moose' creatures are much more aggressive at times than you'd suspect. It's really one of my more favorite places to run the kids' camps, and I considered moving there earlier this year, but it really is rather more removed than I wanted from everyone I know.

I will certainly keep that in mind, and I believe I should probably do some research on this 'moose'. I wonder if it's a magical or Muggle creature.

I've explored a few muggle libraries. There's some very interesting things in them. And I've seen the internet, a bit, and I've always thought we could use something like it.

Also, my mother is half Canadian. We spent some time there when I was growing up. It's lovely though the weather is rather chill in winter.

I have heard of the reputed Canadian winters, so perhaps should I ever visit, I would like to do so in the spring or summer. As for the internet, perhaps we are far overdue some research into something similar if we cannot make Muggle technology function in our world.

Yeah, the one winter we were there for a month or so, and we ended up coming back to England early. I can do cold, but I don't think I'll be doing that again.

I know some people have limited success, but I haven't really tried much myself.

Stop by my office or flat one of these days.

It takes a great deal of care, but there are some work-arounds.

I would be quite pleased to do so, thank you for the offer.

There are? I thought the interruption from concentrated magic was too strong for Muggle technology to function. What work-arounds have you found, and are they legal?

As you say, magic will disrupt muggle technology, and completely destroy complex electronics like computers if used around them when they are on.

And the legality... Is not using magic legal? In general, other than wards, which are on the walls and not inside, my flat and office are magic free. It would be easier to show you than explain.

Ah, so that is what you meant. I do suppose living or working in a non-magical environment would do the trick.

If it would be amenable, perhaps sometime next week?

I'm a huge proponent of muggle libraries and think we should have more of them. How many did you end up taking out?
Did you know that some even do childrens storytelling hour?

Oliver/Penny/Percy

I'm so pleased for you Percy - you're going to be an incredible asset to the muggle and magical world in your new position and you'll be fantastic at it! I know it!

As for Lucy...its a bit like primary school, isn't it? Being away for a few hours but you'll only ever be a firecall away and you know that she'll be well looked after.

I would be what? I would be, as in I exist? Obviously, Cogito ergo sum. If you're referring to my being in favour of muggle libraries, what's not to enjoy; an open, fair place where knowledge is freely transferred irrespective of background, age or wealth.

I hope I live up to your faith in me.

From what I hear of Muggle schools, that is the case, and I am pleased that Mum was enthusiastic - in fact, she nearly tore my head off for even considering not asking her to tutor Lucy. It is a relief and I know she will teach her as well as she taught me. Except there won't be firecall service in the Muggle world, Merlin help me.

How could you not? Its well placed and justified.

Hmm, what about a type of clock your mum had? The one that tattled on wherever you were or if anything happened? If such a piece of magic already exists, it can likely be miniaturised and put onto strap a little like a muggle watch. Add a vibration charm and what would pass off as an everyday object in my world might alley your fears a bit?
