Department of Magical Law Enforcement
As we've now got several characters in the DMLE, it seems ever-more important that ideas don't get lost in the AIM chat.

I've tried to split this post up into sections to guide discussion. Adding further sections is encouraged if any of the current ones aren't relevant!

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is the largest department at the Ministry of Magic. Arguably the most important of the various departments, it is a combination of police and justice facilities, and is roughly the equivalent to the Home Office of Muggle Britain or the Department of Justice in the United States. All other departments are answerable to this one, with the exception of the Department of Mysteries. [src]

List of cases I've mentioned in Harry's threads:
SEPT:

- Start of the court proceedings against Nathaniel Warrick, age 60, stood accused of numerous crimes: spousal abuse, possession of Dark artefacts, use of an Unforgiveable.

- Harry and Susan investigate the kidnapping of the daughter of Wizengamot member. Suspected Dark Arts cult involved, successful in catching the cult members and rescuing the girl.

- A young female Auror named Chernoknizhnik was killed in the line of duty

- UNofficially, Harry visits Greg to make sure he's not up to anything nefarious.

- Man uses Imperious to keep wife from leaving him, Harry had to testify in court.

OCT:

- Harry has a run-in with elderly man Waddlesworth, who used Imperious to keep his even more elderly mother-in-law from nagging him.

- Harry has to stop by Greg's, after reports of suspected DE activity are reported to the Auror's office.

and I think that's it for cases I've made up so far!

Qualifications & Recruitment
[info]pawnography
2014-10-17 02:19 pm UTC (link)
From book canon and interviews:
  • "a minimum of five N.E.W.T.s, and nothing under 'Exceeds Expectations' grade"
  • "stringent series of character and aptitude tests"
  • Umbridge stated that the Ministry looks into the criminal records of the applicants
  • According to Minerva McGonagall, no Auror had been taken on for three years prior to 1995, though Nymphadora Tonks stated that she qualified the year before, meaning she was probably one of the last candidates taken on
  • Kingsley Shacklebolt permitted any participant in the Battle of Hogwarts to begin Auror training if they were interested, on the grounds that having fought and survived in such a battle and not changing sides against such odds more than satisfied the character and skill requirements

Just FYI, I think it's been mentioned that both Savage and Proudfoot are female, and the highest ranking Aurors at the moment. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Excellent idea! I've added it here under the general department section as cases might tend to overlap between offices.
