Hestia Duvall still loves the ponies ([info]nubivagant) wrote in [info]finnigans_ooc,

Introducing Hestia Duvall
Hey everyone, Lis here with my third, Hestia Duvall, though most will remember her as Hestia Carrow from school. She was two years behind the Trio and in Slytherin. She went off to the States as her father's representative in the winged horse racing circuit, both racing and buying/trading. There, she met quidditch player and USA National Team Member Troy Duvall, and they eloped a few months later. Six months ago Hestia's father died and she had to return to the UK to take control/officially head Halcyon Stables. All while pregnant as she discovered a few months ago.

I wouldn't call Hestia the 'typical' Slytherin, mostly because she doesn't give two knuts what you think and is going to do what she wants, regardless. Don't even think about rubbing her belly or you may lose a hand. She has a sarcastic sense of humor and is almost stupidly competitive, but she's not all 'yay pureblood supremacy' like her infamous aunt and uncle. She kept her head down during that year, which earned her no favors, but see above: Hestia doesn't care. Her current hobbies include the stables and horses, surviving this pregnancy without going stir crazy, and driving her mother mad.

I would love friends for Hestia. People who dislike her based on her family alone. People who are into horses. Quidditch associated people (Troy is in talks to sign with a BIL team).

You may have also noticed that Hannah's face changed. With that, she also had an occupation change. She is no longer a midwife, but a sort of Jill of All Trades. Hannah is in need of a few places to work and has experience in all manner of industries. In her off time she bakes and makes soaps & lotions that are sold at the farmer's market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. She still knits, which are also sold at the farmer's market. She lives with Ginny and Ben (as discussed with Jess), but we're still open to everything else!

Marcus is happy to see his cousin, though he's more than a little jealous he can't emulate her "doesn't care" attitude. He's excited about her baby because he is going to spoil the crap out of that kid, and he's happy to babysit whenever she needs unless it interferes with Quidditch. And he'll help Troy in any way he can with the Quidditch thing as well.

Oh Marcus, Hes adores her family (even her mother), so I expect that she bothers him just because she can. She'll even try to get him to smile from time to time.

Rolf would be a bit torn, given her family, but as anyone knows, really, your family isn't you. I think though that he might not understand why she didn't do anything in 5th year (he was hurt repeatedly, standing up for younger students), but I'm not sure he'd say anything. However, she is in his year, and a Slytherin, and he's already friends with a Slytherin in his year (Astoria) so possibly they hung out and talked and stuff. He loves horses and winged horses, of course; he played winged polo in the youth league and possibly even raced on occasion as a kid. While he hasn't ridden in a while (and isn't sure he can now, given his injury), he still adores horses. Open to anything,t hough I'd love to know how they got along in school.

Hannah is welcome to help out at The Bestiary on occasion. Rolf would love a reliable clerk or helper every now and then, at least, and someone to help out with the animals. Open to talking.

Now you see Hes' reasoning for escaping to the States. The fact that she found a husband there is just an added bonus. If he ever asked her why she didn't step up she's just point out the fact that she would have been used as an example and then she'd get huffy.

But she's always happy to promote the horses/horse riding so she'd try to be friendly.

As for Hannah, Reliability is practically her middle name. She might not know a whole lot about animals, but she'd do her best.

Rolf likely would never say anything, since his experience with families, it is often like that, and yeah. He's a good guy, and forgiving. He would love to at least get to mess around a little with horses again at some point, i think he misses them.

Awesome. Well, if she ever wants to try her hand, he can at least use an assistant to man (or in this case, woman!) the store on occasion so he can go out and do things more. Or go away for the weekend without worrying, lol

Well he's always welcome to tour Halcyon Stables. They are her babies until her spawn is born. Then they're probably still her babies.

Hannah's trustworthy, I promise.

They'll always be her babies. I"m a horse person, I doubt that having a kid will ever change how I feel about my babies.

He will definitely want to talk to her about covering for a few days so he can take Rose on vacation then! And help in general. The previous manager left it in a bit of a mess.

Yay Hestia!

Ernie: They probably didn't know each other in school, but I think he's a fan of the winged horse racing, so he might know of her stables.

Percy: Probably no connections at the moment, but am totally open to devloping some!

Gemma: Same house, many years apart. You know the drill with Gemma ;)

Vee: May have heard of her husband in quidditch circles, but that's all. Always room for random encounters!

Yes. Hestia. Finally.

Ernie - Ask her about her horses. She will have all the time for him then.

Percy - Perhaps his daughter decides to go through a horse phase? Hestia entered hers and never left.

Gemma - So many years apart, but people have probably told her to go to Gemma's spa to relax and Hes has probably agreed. Because who doesn't like pampering.

Vee - Absolutely. I figure Quidditch things with SOs will be a thing.

Percy: I love that idea! Percy's already shaking his head at the thought.

Gemma: Will pamper her well.

Vee: Awesome! Who knows, hubby may end up on Ballycastle and they'll meet up more often.

I don't know if Hestia and Zacharias would know or have known each other, but I'm always up for plotting stuff and random encounters! And Zacharias knows Hannah, but how well is up for figuring out or it can be vague house and DA know and we can just let them figure out more in play if you want!

I wouldn't say hate, because Luna hates people but she's quite wary of anyone named Carrow. Still she'll be nice, because that's what she does.

It's very much a case of Hestia's parents not being the same as Amycus and Alecto. Hestia was raised with manners and standards, thank you very much.

Also, Hes always needs a vet she could call in case of emergency. They do have one on staff at the Stables, but an extra name or two can't hurt. How does Luna feel about winged horses?

Alicia probably wouldn't know Hestia (though she might be a touch wary about her being a Carrow, although she's learned to take people as they are now, rather as how they were), but she is sending a high five for Hestia's attitude to touching her belly (she had strong feelings about that too). So there's a sympathetic ear for her if that's needed.

Melinda wouldn't know her either, but would cater to any and all cravings in the sweets division Hestia might have.

Rose was 2 years after Hestia in school and considering what the Carrows did to Rolf (after he'd protected Rose) she may not have as easy a time to look past that as Rolf does. That's not saying that her mind can't be changed, she's just coming into this with a protective streak a mile long and not a particular favourable view on Hestia.

Hestia got in trouble her last two years of Hogwarts because some people don't seem to realize that just because you share a surname doesn't mean you're exactly the same. Her father was never a Death Eater nor was ever suspected of being as such.

If Melinda could figure out how to make beignets, Hes would be in high heaven. She's also a big fan of chocolate. And American Girl Scout thin mints. (She knows they are muggle cookies, but she doesn't CARE, they are delicious.)

I'm happy for them to have a snarky/oil v. water relationship!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]_melinda_
2014-09-14 04:50 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, I don't think that got phrased quite right: Ali wasn't at Hogwarts during Hestia's two years, so she wouldn't know, and I know that her parents weren't DE, so once Alicia's been allowed to look past the initial reaction to the surname (which Hestia doesn't even go by any longer, right?) then I don't think she'd see a problem with it (case in point: Adrian Pucey).

I'm sure that could be arranged. If she can, they're already on the calendar (that I've yet to make, oops) for a fitting holiday or celebration, otherwise, if Hestia inquires (enquires?) about them, she will figure it out, and make it to order for her. Same thing goes for the thin mints, though she may need a sampler first, then she can make something similar or inspired by it.

We shall definitely see how they get along and take it from there :)

I understand, ;), just giving context. And yes! Hestia goes by Duvall, but if people ask she won't lie. Plus, her father built the stables up to a high reputation during the two wars. He was most definitely not a death eater.

Hes gets her mother-in-law to send her some. She'll share if that means she gets a steadier supply.

Seamus doesn't have good associations with the name Carrow. He's normally okay with Slytherins in general (or tries to be) and he didn't expect people younger than him to speak up for what was right so he can probably be talked around just by seeing her, not hearing her talk badly about muggleborns, etc.

Dominic thinks she's interesting, though pregnant women are intimidating. Still, he'd be full of questions about New Orleans and horse racing and he wouldn't mind answering her questions about muggles, even if they're not PC.

Lucy has no associations with the name Carrow at all, I doubt she rememebrs Hestia from school. Random interactions?

Greg probably knows of her, but I don't know what he'd make of her...

Muggles have always been something of a curiosity for Hestia. She frankly wasn't exposed to them very much growing up and her first contact with muggleborns was Hogwarts. She got much better in New Orleans (it had a higher mix of muggles and magical folk interacting). Frankly, she sees it as a bit like horses. Yes, there are thoroughbred horses and those are beautiful creatures, but so are the mixed breeds. They just compete in different things.

She hasn't quite reached the crazy pregnant woman stage, though I would say she's going stir crazy instead. As a very active woman who rode almost every day, it's hard to have given that up. She'll answer all the questions about New Orleans, especially because she misses that (and her husband) terribly.

Random interaction is good!

Greg - They have a cousin in common (Marcus) and he technically finished Hogwarst the same year she did. She would be friendly with him and would have happily told people off if they tried to make his life miserable those last two years.

Susan: Two conflicting points of view - she was cruciated by the Carrows in her seventh year, so as a rule she would be wary. But she's also an auror, with access to all kinds of things and would probably look into it and discover that Hestia is not related to the Death Eaters at all?

Dennis: Missed the year with the Carrows so I think he'd really quite like her? Also she was a year above him I think so they may have actually got on quite well? He's not a fan of people being bullied for their family.

Roger: Wouldn't know her, but well he's in love with Marcus so there's definite room for plot!

Susan - Hestia's father was never a death eater and was probably pretty heavily investigated after the first war, what with his siblings Amycus and Alecto. He built their moderate wealth into something much larger and respected by pointedly staying away from politics and having his way with horses. Hes is following in those footsteps, but with an American husband. If Susan wants to have words, they'll have words.

Dennis - This could be interesting. She has this Devil may care attitude about who she chooses as friends. Considering a muggleborn might scandalize her mother? All the better!

Roger - Oh, she's already eying you and ready to defend her cousin's honor. (Yes, imagine this petite little pregnant lady ready to defend Marcus Flint's honor.)

Oh see I think Susan would be fine with Hestia as she would know that her father wasn't a death eater and thus would be happy to be friendly. If you want to go an antagonistic angle though that's fun as well.

Dennis: yesss even better!

Roger: *snort* that's perfect.

Firstly PB ♥.

Dean - Not fond of the name Carrow but once he works out she's not the bad type he'll be friendly enough, although not sure they'd become super close.

Charlie - See Dean re: Carrows, again the not-bad thing will work on him. He definitely approves of the horses being a creatures fan. He also kind of likes scandalising his family from time to time.

Re: Hannah. If she has interest in working at the club behind the bar or in the cloakroom maybe Charlie would be happy to give her a go.

Marietta like probably doesn't know her either.

Rich's mother made him memorize the Social Registry so he knows which Carrow is which.

And while he prefers thestrals, he knows all about winged horses from his CoMC days and is a better than average rider from his mother's side of his upbringing. He's just way too big for racing or polo. Although no longer really involved with critters, he has studied healing all over the globe if she has a late-night emergency or something.

He and his father have gotten fairly heavily into real estate the days if she is/was looking for a property.

  • Adrian would know her, and I would assume their families go way back. Perhaps there was a bit of a brotherly/sisterly friendship when they were kids? He's glad to see her back in the country either way.
  • Mac wouldn't know her, and probably wouldn't care to given her family, but he's also friendly with just about anyone so there's room for them getting to know each other :)
  • Cho doesn't like her, because she's a Carrow, and Cho just cannot get past her prejudices against old bad families, ugh. Cho quite likes horses though... Perhaps Hestia could be someone who changes her mind? :/
  • Romilda was her year at Hogwarts! She has no opinion on family names and the like, and horses are lovely, as is Hestia. Friends?

As for Hannah - Mac & Romi are always looking for extra sales hands in their shops! Cho's also soon (UGH SHE'S DREADING IT) going to be hiring help at Charming Parties and getting a proper office.

Ginny and Hannah = bffs. dibs. Does Hannah have a pet to toss into the mix, too? We must girl-roommate shenanigans soon.

Ginny and Hestia - I think she might break her 'hates Slytherin' for Hestia, espeically since she probably knows/has followed her husband.

Sally was two years above Hestia, but same house, and I think they'd get along well enough.

Padma and Hannah - if Hannah's knowledgeable about potions, Padma could use always use help in one of the shops. Either sales floor, or making certain potions (healing ones? not sure how much of the love of healing you've kept).

Padma and Hestia - don't really see anything right now, different corners and all, but Padma's got no reason to be cruel to her simply because she's related to those Carrows.

and my new girl, Leanne, would have been dormmates with Hannah, and is probably reserved around Hestia.
