Padma Patil
I swear to Merlin, I might actually go for House Bingo. Who needs a Hufflepuff line filled?

In the meantime, this is Padma! She's a Potions Mistress, and owns two apothecaries, aptly (and unorginally) titled Patil Apothecaries. One of them is in Hogsmeade, the other is Monument Alley. She's the quieter of the two siblings, way more reserved, but she's also open enough to be a succeessful businesswoman. Her Apothecaries specialise in Eastern/Middle Eastern potions, though Padma has stock of just about any potions ingredient. She leaves a lot of the 'traditional' potions to Adrian, and focuses on her specialty and selling supplies.

I am terrible at intros, so what else? She's very in-tune with her Hindu faith (both her parents are Punjabi Hindu, raised in India), though her father has disowned her (long story, but basically she rebelled against his strict classist/mysoginistic ways, including an arranged marriage - the app says Shafiq, but I'm willing to adjust if anyone wants to jump in on an arranged marriage), but that's probably not too public of knowledge. She has a white Siamese familiar, Shadow, who can be found sleeping in the window of the Monument Alley Apothecary most of the time.

She's a fan of the book corner at Finnigan's, though she doesn't drink alcohol. She also attends Battlescars regularly and LBB.

I think that's it! Her full bio is here so come at me with friends, apothecary customers, fellow book cornerers, LBB acquaintences, even enemies (but why would Padma have enemies?).

Hi there :) I can see Rolf shopping around for a new apothecary to supply his business' needs, so that might be nice. I don't know that she would remember him from school or not. It's also possible that she might buy pet supplies for her familiar from him? Up to you! She sounds veryiinteresting.

A Hufflepuff two years below, she probably doesn't remember him, but she'd definitely get pet supplies from him!

In school the only people Blaise interacted with outside of Slytherin were Ravencalws. I can see them being on at least formal speaking terms.

Hermione and her should be friends they share a lot in common. Hermione doesn't drink, enjoys the Corner, and attends Battlescars. Plus they were in DA, prefects, and classes together.

I think she'd like Blaise well enough! Let's try it!

Oooo, Hermione doesn't drink either? Perfect! They can get together and talk about what idiots people turn into when they drink. Though she might feel slightly intimidated by Hermione. She did at school, not sure if tha'ts gone away now. We'll have to toss them together and see.

Wonderful, if I ever get caught up and life calms down.

Nope, she likes to be alert. Sounds like a plan and Hermione says she has no reason to be intimidated.

Woo Padma! Seamus would be familiar with her as Parvati's sister, and from around the pub. (And if they're easier to tell apart now her hair is shorter he's grateful!) I don't know that they'd be close, but nor can I imagine there's any bad blood between them.

Dominic was a year younger than her at school, he thinks she's beautiful but more importantly thinks she's really interesting. He may occasionally come in to the shop not because he needs anything but just to ask questions about all the different potions. Never when she's busy or anything, though.

Lucy might vaguely remember her from sharing classes. (I assume Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw must have shared some things just like Hufflepuff and Gryffindor did).

I hope they both don't have short hair, but that's up to Parvati! Padma will be glad that he's grateful, though. I can't see any reason for bad blood either.

Padma would LOVE that if he came in. She'd answer all his questions and encourage him to try things on his own and would really just be happy with it all.

I'm assuming they had DADA together, as well as Potions, since those were shared by Slytherin/Gryffindor. If Lucy ever needed a GOOD potions partner, Padma would have been willing to work with Lucy (I think Padma was a lot like Hermione to Neville, in that she'd help anyone struggling to keep Snape off their back).

Awesome! Dominic might after a while move to (polite, as non-invasive-as-possible) questions about her faith. He sort of believes in something but he's not really sure what because there is no practical application and he's Dominic so he's never sat down to figure it out. He find other peope's beliefs super interesting.

Ooh, I like that. Lucy could have done all the non-magic bits like cutting and slicing and skinning boomslangs and she's a good cook so she'd have been okay at all those bits, and then Padma could do anything that required magic.

Padma will happily talk about her faith (and the practical applications she finds for it). I warn you, he'll get an earful about the gods - she'll probably start with her and Parvati's names, and why they were named the way they were.

Padma would have LOVED that. Like, to the point where she'd run over to Lucy for her partner. But then she'd also be like 'Lucy, you need to learn this for the exam; Flitwick found us an empty room to use, I will teach you no matter how long it takes' because not completely taking advantage would have been something Padma would be determined not to do (and also, a bit selfish, as she'd be scared of Snape coming down on her for Lucy failing). Up to Lucy whether she took Padma up on it or not!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]openbottle
2014-09-03 01:04 pm UTC (link)
Lucy would definitely have taken her up on that, she needed all the help she could get and really there was no point in being shy about her lack of magical prowess back then because it was really fairly obvious. Though it would be nice if maybe Padma saw that she was good at all the theoretical stuff, writing essays etc. so didn't think of her as stupid.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lotusoftheriver
2014-09-04 02:44 am UTC (link)
Padma would never think Lucy was stupid! She'd encourage her, and tell her not to feel bad, and that people learn differently/are smart about different things, and it's a shame Snape won't take ten seconds to see that about his students.

Like, imagine what Neville could have done if Snape had encouraged him. Or Lucy could have gone on to be a theoretical potioneer. Snape is a dick, the end forever and ever. There are very few people Padma actually despises, and he's one of them. One good deed in the war doesn't excuse the five years he spent bullying her classmates.

Padma and Zacharias friendly at the Corner? She might (silently) judge him a bit for running off and knocking over first years, but she won't say anything about it.

Caroline here. Charlie is my second.

First Dean, he remembers Padma, likes her and she may see him in the book corner, although he's more likely to be sketching than reading unless there's the likes of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams around. He's a regular at Battlescars too. He would also love Holi, he loves bright colours. Painting inspiration!

As for Charlie, he owns the local club which has been open about six weeks. He's missing most of his right leg and has his prosthetic. He's already been at the LBB from while he was setting the club up. I don't think he has particular potion needs as such.

HOLI IS ONLY ONE OF MANY ... hahaha. Diwali is coming up, and that's a huge Hindu holiday. I'm not sure what Padma will do with it in the community (except maybe ask businesses to hang a light), and she'll give her friends gifts/sweets. But that's a ways off, I have time to think on that.

Padma LOVES Douglas Adams. They can bond over that. :)

a;ldkjrg;lsjfdh;lkj - whenever I play Charlie, I give him a lame leg from a dragon incident to explain why he's back in the UK, so that's awesome. Padma is also asexual, though she doesn't use the term. She just doesn't date and resists any attempts to date. She'd like Charlie.

Oh, excellent. Dean has a thing for funny, happy books, or at least a whole mass of sarcasm. Hence Douglas Adams.

It was about the only way I could think for him to actually stay in London. And Charlie doesn't use the word either. He just tried it and worked out he totally had zero interest in having it with others. He may yet have a romantic side, he has no idea because he's conflated sex and romance.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]lotusoftheriver

Padma loves the sarcasm from Adams. I feel like her tea cup is probably emblazened with a hitchhikers quote about tea. Probably 'is there any tea on this spaceship?'. Padma appreciates people who understand the vitality of tea, even if they are completely fictional characters.

Ha, me too. :) Padma is definitely romantic, but the idea of dating/having a sexual encounter with anyone really turns her off. Like, if someone could court her, yet never want to kiss her or have sex, that would be a perfect relationship. But Padma doesn't even understand what that IS. She just knows she doesn't want to have sex, and it worries her somewhat. Especially since she did as a teenager (well, things were crazy as a teenager, Ron is pretty much the reason she joined the DA).

Dean prefers tea but drinks coffee for the caffeine quite a lot. He's already bonded with Susan over Discworld, so bonding with someone over Adams too would be great.

Charlie is pretty zen with the no sex thing, has been for years. He's firm but polite at people who flirt with him (firmer if he has to be). He'd be super supportive of her and helpful, but I have no idea if it'd ever come up. And between quidditch and animals he didn't have much interest as a teen either.

POKE POKE POKE. Adrian is not happy to see competition but he runs things much more loosely, less like an apothecary, so perhaps than can be some fun friendly rivalry between the two of them? The potions world isn't huge after all and his family is fairly well known within it (his father & paternal grandfather especially).

Cho hangs in the book corner quite a bit, though usually with a glass of wine. They also of course would have been housemates (though Cho's a year older). Friends? Padma would be welcome among Mari, Roger, Ben, and Melinda as well I'm sure (though I can't speak for them, lol).

Romi has probably seen her around? She probably goes to Padma for potions as well as she finds Pucey off-putting. Think Padma might ever come into Romi's shop? She's quite pretty ♥

Mac would totally bed her, but that's because she's gorgeous.

Yea, I'm wondering where he gets his supplies? He could get them from Padma. Padma would find that hilarious - he gets supplies from her and then turns around and competes with her for potions business. Padma's more than happy to sell to the crowd that doesn't want to buy potions from a convicted war criminal. ;) But otherwise, yes, very friendly rivalry. Her Hogsmeade shop does well during Hogwarts weekends. I think Padma works it out with the professor to have certain specific ingredients in her shop during that time. The students think they've hit a lucky break getting more eye of newt, but really, Padma knew they'd been needing it.

They can be friendly!

Padma is asexual. She has no use for Romi's shop. But she might go in and at least chat with Romi in the interest of cultivating good business relationships. She's not very open about being asexual, just doesn't date and such, so it's not like Romi would know.

She is gorgeous, but sorry, Mac, you're out of luck.

Ooh, Padma!

So, it's pretty unavoidable that Lavender and Padma know each other! I feel like their relationship was maybe kind of on the awkward, tentative side with Parvati sort-of-but-not-really in the middle of them? But has hopefully mellowed over the years into whatever sort of friendship they have today?

And Bryn was a year above her in Hufflepuff, so I don't think he'd know her from school, but would probably just recognise her from serving her in Finnigan's or at one of his other jobs.

Yes! Padma saw Lavender as her 'replacement' for a while, but then she got over it, and now they are friendly! Obviously not as close as Parvati, but Padma would welcome Lavender for tea.

Hufflepuff line? Rose could always use someone from her year? :D

So, alphabetically:

Alicia, would probably remember Padma from DA, and maybe she'll be using some of Padma's products in her work with the Pride.

Melinda was a year above Padma, so would remember her from that + Padma also falls into that category of people that Melinda was more than happy to leave the spotlight to. They'd meet at the LBB.

I think we already talked about Rose and Padma, and I think that shld happen sometime!

I don't think there are any from her year. Eleanor Branstone and Laura Madley are a year above her, though.

Oh, was Alicia connected to a Shafiq? I think I remember reading someone was, but I can't remember!

Ha! Padma is not a spotlight seeker AT ALL. She is just like 'You mean Parvati, right? I'm going back to my shop/corner now ...' Padma has a sweet tooth, so that should help!

Definitely!

No, Alicia's not connected to a Shafiq, but she did marry on from a Sacred 28 family: Daniel Fawley, whose family owns Pride of Portree.

Eddie was same house year older, I imagine they would know each other a least a bit, he didn't get in trouble much except that one time selling study aids so hopefully they would get along okay!

Megan was the same year but a Hufflepuff, and not DA. She would talk to anyone, so I'm sure she'd be friendly! Not sure if Padma would end up in her shop but perhaps they would see each other at business owners meetings?

Oliver remembers her sister more since she was her house but would say 'hallo' all the same! She's not a death eater so that's good in his book! Not sure if she had a quidditch interest though.

Astoria is 2 years younger, but she actually has a lot in common, in that she bucked tradition (a bit), only she did end up getting engaged to Draco, just on her terms. But she knows all about wanting to have a career and such so who knows, maybe they could end up discussing it?

So that's what I have!

HAHA, I AM NOTICING A THEME THAT ALL THE INDIANS ARE IN RAVENCLAW (except Parvati, poor Parvati). Padma isn't the sort to start up a Hogwarts Indians group, but if someone was inclined, she'd have joined. ;)

Padma would frequent the shop JUST for the perfumes. And definitely at LBB meetings.

Padma ... will attend games. And remark how much more fun the games would be if they were flying carpets instead of brooms. But ask her anything more than that - like which team she supports - and she just picks the one closest to London (which I think is Puddlemere? See, I don't even know. Padma has no freaking idea).

I think Padma would appreciate someone she could talk with (that's not Parvati) about the chains of tradition and how to navigate being your own person, yet still honouring your family.

Well, for House Bingo, there's always Wayne Hopkins, Oliver Rivers, or any of the quidditch players :D

I think I'll quite enjoy seeing your Padma in the game! Here's my 3 4:

Vikesh Moon: Same House but a year ahead, similar cultural background, though he comes from a more ascetic sect. I think he'd come to her almost exclusively out of respect for their similar backgrounds and wanting to keep to his roots by using more Eastern potions. (If you wanted to work the arranged marriage backstory, take a look at Vee's bio here and see if that's someone she'd want to not marry - I could work with several situations as long as they're in character for Vee).

Ernie: Year-mate and in the DA together, and attends Battlescars too. He's also the only Hufflepuff of his year to get into NEWT-level potions, so there may be some professional respect there? He's also always on the lookout for new research, etc, that could help the long-term patients in Janus Thickey - maybe there might be something in Eastern magic that could be helpful?

Percy: Would not have had much opportunity to interact with her, though would have remembered seeing her and her sister with Ron and Harry at the Yule Ball. He'd have some curiosity about her potions and would check her out if only for that.

Gemma: Always appreciates a fellow businesswoman. Would any of Padma's potions have beauty/spa applications?

She personally is Shakti, though she was raised in a more conservative denomination - Sanatani Hindu. SHE doesn't WANT - and never did - to marry anyone. I can't see their father wanting either of them to marry a Shaivi, but if Vee was the only Hindu, he would consider that better than a Westerner, since he thinks his daughters are far too corrupted by the Western world (Vee's mother being from Kashmir could help things). If that's in-character for his parents, to set up a marriage for him, we can go for it.

She'd definitely love to work with him on the healing properties of Eastern potions. :)

She'd like Percy.

Padma could definitely make one that has a beauty/spa application. Not sure what you're asking for here.

He also has the disadvantage of being 1/4 Irish - but I'm also presuming the number of Hindu wizards are low. I can see Vee's mother wanting to keep some of their cultural heritage because she knows how important it is to him, so she would have sought him out a potential bride - but of course with the two of them having the final say. So let's go for it! Since she's an ace, I presume his periods of chastity probably would have seemed acceptable to her, but other things about each other did not mesh?

Excellent for ERnie! And Percy likes people who like Percy (there are so few!).

Just a general idea, nothing specific. If I have an idea for something a little more specific, I'll let you know - maybe have Gemma contact Padma in-game.

Oh, they didn't even make it to the 'getting to know each other' phase. The second Mr. Patil was like 'this is the man you'll be marrying', Padma was like HAHA, NOT A CHANCE, and so he disowned her. (Parvati would likewise "join her [Padma] on the NOPE Train to Fuckthatville", in the words of the Parvati hold). She's still a great deal awkward around Vee now, though she tries to be polite, because it's not his fault their parents are all crazy.
