“Why don’t you just cut that tree down and bring it inside instead?” Dorcas narrowed her eyes at Peadar from her position next to him on the love seat. “It looks plenty festive out there in the snow, thank you. It’s like a second Christmas tree but with real snow on it! Why don’t you just go get a tree from somewhere else to keep inside the house and leave that one outside?” “I thought you’d be tired of trees already. How much greenery have you collected by now?” Madog grinned from across the room. There was still much to decorate in that castle. But it was much easier when it was done in shifts so they didn’t all exhaust themselves out by the end of the day. He, Gwen and Morgan were on garland duty for now. Meanwhile, Dorcas had somehow managed to rope the rest of them into helping her pack cookies for the recipients in the Order and DMLE. Lydia was excused though, only because the dear woman had helped her in the cookie-baking extravaganza. The boxes were nearly done and ready to be sent off, but the debate about the Christmas tree – a newer one now, because unfortunately, someone’s off-kilter spellwork had reduced their previous one to a pile of matches – kept them glued to their seats in the living room. “Because it’s the lad’s job.” Angus’ pointed look at Peadar gave hint to everyone who he believed was responsible for the aforementioned incident. “But a tree outdoors,” he started again, ignoring the look and focusing his attention to Dorcas, “would only look festive during the night, if you set lights on it. What do you do about it in the day when it’ll appear just like an ordinary tree?” “You set up baubles that can sparkle in the sun.” Her answer was quick, and she shrugged casually as she tied shut the last box of cookies. “I would say,” Nick spoke up, next to Angus and across from Peadar and Dorcas. “The tree ought to be brought inside. But we’ll place it near a window, someplace where light can shine in. And still give sparkles to the ornaments. Some of their lust has started to wear off.” Dorcas frowned in thought for a moment before glancing at the box of baubles placed on one side of the room. They were all surprisingly intact despite the condition of the former tree. “I… guess that’s all right then.” They really had almost no shine anymore. She just had not wanted to say anything before, out of politeness to the MacDougals. They were their ornaments after all. She had not had her tree after escaping from her own flat. “Okay, who would be charming the baubles then?” “I can!” “Oh, hell. We’ll end up with a box full of sand eventually, considering what already happened,” Morgan said, wearing an expression of mirth and skepticism at Peadar’s volunteering. “It was an honest—I mean, I am sure that whoever did it was sorry and would say that it was honest mistake, though I myself don’t appreciate this accusation!” Lydia laughed. “How can one muck up a simple glittering charm?” “Asked the same question regarding how one could turn a tree into toothpicks,” Angus answered, still giving Peadar the look. Before anyone could object any further, Dorcas stood up to pull the box over to where they sat. “The worst that could happen is that they turn into ash, yes? Then we’ll try with just a few first.” Her heart went out to Peadar. Even if she did think he was guilty of doing Merlin knows what. But, reluctantly, she took three baubles out of the box and held them in front of Peadar. If this didn’t work out, clearly, they would have to employ someone else to this job. Peadar seemed completely grateful, and just as eager to take out his wand and impress everyone in the room. Or maybe just impress the pretty brown-eyed girl from outside the family as he gave her a smile and said, “I won’t let you down, Dorcas.” She had to resist the urge to roll her eyes, but Morgan didn’t hold that back when Dorcas glanced over at her. Just as Peadar readied his wand, however, something brushed against Dorcas’ leg startling her, and the ornaments dropped from her hand. Appetizer had just gotten a little lonely from his previous spot outside of the room. “Oh! Wait, Peadar!” But his spell went off at the exact time the ornaments slipped off. There was only a momentary flash of light directed at Angus and Nick, sitting straight across from Peadar, obviously in that line of fire. The baubles lay completely intact on the floor. Everyone’s eyes turned to the two vampires whose faces suddenly lit up as if they’d been completely engulfed in a sea of glitter. Dorcas and Lydia’s jaws dropped open seconds before they joined in with the fit of laughter already coming from Morgan, Gwen and Madog. And Peadar made the wisest decision he could possibly make in this situation. He ran. |
