New FAQ for syndication. Edits please! How can I control the way my InsaneJournal entries display on RSS feeds?
You can control how your journal is displayed on RSS feeds through the use of admin console commands.
You can choose through use of the admin console to set how much of your entries will be syndicated, although please note that this is not a substitution for setting the security level.
The syndication levels are: full - where all of your entry will be syndicated across. summary - where only the title, the first paragraph and a link will be syndicated. title - where only the subject and a link will be syndicated.
To set the syndication level in your journal, please go to the admin console and typing the following command:
set synlevel leveltype
Where leveltype has been replaced with the chosen syndication level.
Please remember that all public non backdated entries can be picked up and displayed by RSS feeds. If you are concerned about your InsaneJournal's security please read this FAQ on how to set minimum security levels to help prevent any accidental public posts.
If you are concerned with information such spoilers being displayed via RSS feeds, there are a number of work arounds.
Spoiler tables
Spoiler tables are used for hiding text information. It creates a small table in which the background colour is the same as the font colour, so that information will not display unless highlighted, or if the browser in question strips formatting.
To create a spoiler table please use the following code:
<table bgcolor="#CCCCCC"><tr><td><font color="#CCCCCC"> [[Text you don't want people to see easily goes here.]] Table version.</font> </td></tr></table>
<span style="color: white, background: white"> [[Text you don't want people to see easily goes here.]] </span>
Fake cuts A fake cut is a term used to refer to when something has been used to refer to a link to another entry that has been given the appearance of the lj-cut tag.
As backdated entries are not syndicated onto friendslists or rss feeds located elsewhere you can use them to create a fake cut work around.
To create a fakecut in your journal, please follow the following steps:
Create the full entry post in question and select the "Entry is Backdated:" option, so that it will not be syndicated elsewhere. This entry will be displayed only within your own journal.
Create a duplicate of the post. Choose to where you would use the LJ-cut tag, instead link to the previously created entry, and remove any of the information you don't want displayed from the post.
You can additionally choose to make the link bold, and place it in brackets to further mimic the appearance of an LJ-cut.
